Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4, Galaxy Z Fold 4 Get One UI 5.1.1; One UI 5 Watch Rolls Out to Older Models

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 4 have been updated to One UI 5.1.1, according to the South Korean smartphone maker. These handsets will receive updates that add support for some of the features introduced with the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 that were unveiled last month. Older foldable phones from Samsung will receive the update in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, previous Galaxy Tab and Galaxy Watch models are also being updated to One UI 5.1.1 and One UI 5 Watch, respectively.

In a Samsung Newsroom post, the company announced that it will roll out the updates to its older foldable phones, Galaxy Tab, and Galaxy Watch models over the coming weeks. These updates will add features that debuted on the devices that were recently launched by the company at its Galaxy Unpacked event last month.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 4 will get improvements to the Flex Mode with the company’s One UI 5.1.1 update, such as the ability to hide or show the Flex Mode panel that allows users to take a screenshot, scrub through videos more accurately, use the screen as a touchpad, or enable the multi-window mode on the handset. Users can also drag and drop files from one app (such as the Gallery) to another app after updating to One UI 5.1.1 on recent foldable phones and tablets such as the Galaxy Tab S8.

Owners of recent Samsung Galaxy Watch models will get an update to One UI 5 Watch that will add support for the new sleep management and sleep coaching features that were announced with the Galaxy Watch 6 series. The update will also adds support for Irregular Heart Rhythm Notifications (IHRN), personalised heart rate zones, the new Track Run, and Custom Workout features. Galaxy Watch 5 Pro users will be able to download GPX route files around their location, according to Samsung.

According to the company, last year’s Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 4 will be the first to receive the update to One UI 5.1.1 this month. It will roll out to the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Galaxy Z Fold 3, Galaxy Z Fold 2, and Galaxy Z Flip over the coming weeks. 

Similarly, the Galaxy Tab S8 series, Galaxy Tab S7 series, Galaxy Tab S6 Lite, Galaxy Tab A8, Galaxy Tab A7 Lite, Galaxy Tab Active 3 and Galaxy Tab Active 4 Pro will also get the update to One UI 5.1.1.

Samsung says that the Galaxy Watch 5, Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, Galaxy Watch 4, and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic will be updated to One UI 5 Watch. Meanwhile, older smartwatch models like the Galaxy Watch Active 2 and Galaxy Watch 3 will receive the update at a later date, according to the company.

Samsung Galaxy Z Tab Foldable Tablet Tipped to Launch Later This Year Alongside Galaxy Tab S9 Series

Samsung is expected to launch the flagship Galaxy Tab S9 series with Galaxy Tab S9, Galaxy Tab S9+, and Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra models later this year. As per a new leak, the South Korean company might be working on a Galaxy Z Tab with a foldable screen. The new foldable tablet could be launched alongside the Galaxy Tab S9 later this year. Samsung currently leads the foldable smartphone market and the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 are the latest foldable smartphones from the brand. However, Apple is also expected to launch a foldable iPad in 2025.

Tipster Revegnus (@Tech_Reve) on Twitter suggested the possible arrival of the first foldable tablet from Samsung later this year. It is expected to come with the Galaxy Z Tab moniker and will be launched alongside the Galaxy Tab S9 series.

Apple is also speculated to launch its first foldable iPad in 2025. If the latest rumour turns out to be true, the arrival of the Galaxy Z Tab will help Samsung have an edge over the Cupertino-based company and capture market share.

Samsung hasn’t yet announced any details regarding a foldable tablet so far. Therefore, these details should be taken with a pinch of salt. However, the company did tease possible foldable tablet concepts during CES 2023 in Las Vegas.

The South Korean giant is expected to unveil the Galaxy Tab S9 series in the second half of 2023. The lineup is expected to comprise Galaxy Tab S9, Galaxy Tab S9+, and Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra models and they will succeed the Galaxy Tab S8 series that made its debut last year.

As per leaks, the Galaxy Tab S9 series is tipped to run on Android 13 with One UI 5.1. They could be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. They are likely to feature an IP67 build for water and dust resistance as well. 

Foldable phones are all the talk these days, and Samsung currently dominates the space. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 are the latest foldable devices from the company. Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi and Motorola, have also introduced their own foldables, whereas Apple, Realme, and Google, are rumoured to be working on flagship handsets with foldable designs.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Getting Galaxy S22 Series’ Swipeable Smart Widgets, Other Tablets May Follow: Report

Samsung’s Galaxy S22 series’ premium smartphone has turned out to be one of the best-selling phones for the company. One of the smartest features that sets apart the Samsung Galaxy S22 from other models is the introduction of Smart Widgets that the users can swipe through. Now, the South Korean smartphone maker appears to be bringing the swipeable Smart Widgets to all tablets, including the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8. These Smart Widgets were limited to the latest One UI 4.1 phones for a long time, before Samsung decided to feature it on its Galaxy tablets, including the Tab S8.

As per a report by 9to5Google, the feature currently is rolling out to Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 users. A few of these tablets running the March security patch released on April 15 have the Smart Widget available in the Widgets list. These widgets are available in three sizes — 2×2, 4×1, and 4×2. While the smallest size of 2×2 widget is not resizable, users will be able to resize the other two widgets to fit the full width of the screen.

To get easy access to the customisation options for the current widget, one has to long-press on a grouping. Apart from adjusting size, the user can also remove any widget, or add a new one. This allows users to decide the apps that they want to place on their phone or tablets. Much like Apple’s stackable widgets, the Smart Widgets for Android allow users to select and combine multiple widgets into one, available with just one easy swipe.

The long press also provides user the option to remove the entire smart widget, or look into the Settings, where one can switch to full screen interface and turn ‘Auto rotate widgets’ on and off.

If you have used Smart Widget on the Samsung Galaxy S21 and Samsung Galaxy S22, it will be easy to access the feature on the tablets as the functioning is similar. To cycle through widgets, one can swipe left or right. The feature that allows to swipe widgets was reportedly added with the mid-April update and is currently limited to the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8.
