ChatGPT, the AI chatbot by OpenAI, was released for Android and iOS last year. Now, Nothing Phone users can get hands-free access to AI assistance with ChatGPT. Nothing Phone 1 and Phone 2 users can now quickly access ChatGPT voice commands directly from their home screen and Quick Setting panel with a new shortcut. The voice assistant works similarly to Google Assistant and Apple’s Siri.

Nothing CEO Carl Pei announced via a video post on X (formerly known as Twitter) that the Nothing Phone 1 and Phone 2 have received ChatGPT’s Quick Settings shortcut. With this, users of Nothing handsets can access ChatGPT’s voice Assistant through its new Quick Settings option.

As explained in the video post, Nothing OS users have to install the official ChatGPT android app from the Google Play Store and use the voice chat feature at least once within the app to get past the setup. Then users can add the ChatGPT shortcut in both the Quick Settings panel and Quick Settings widget. Tapping on this shortcut icon will run the ChatGPT-powered voice assistant.

With the latest development, ChatGPT will function like an assistant on Android devices like Google’s Assistant and Apple’s Siri.

Nothing Phone 2a Bags TUV Certification, Charging Specifications Revealed Ahead of Debut: Report

Nothing Phone 2a — the company’s purported midrange version of the Phone 2 — is expected to debut at the end of February as the company’s first handset with a MediaTek chipset. Details of the handset have been leaked in the past, giving smartphone enthusiasts an idea of what to expect from the phone in terms of design, specifications and colour options. After being listed several certification websites, the handset has now been spotted on the TUV certification site along with details of its charging specifications.

A listing for the purported Nothing Phone 2a was spotted by 91Mobiles on the TUV certification website with the model number A142. According to the publication, the listing for the Nothing Phone 2a reveals that the phone will support 45W charging — just like the Nothing Phone 2. There’s no word on whether the Nothing Phone 2a will support wireless charging. Gadgets 360 was unable to verify the listing for the handset.

The listing also reveals that the Nothing Phone 2a will support the USB Power Delivery (PD) standard, instead of using a proprietary charging protocol, according to the report. This means that any USB PD compatible charger should be able to charge the Nothing Phone 2a.

Based on previous leaks, we can expect the Nothing Phone 2a to run on MediaTek’s Dimensity 7200 processor, paired with up to 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. It is also said to sport a 6.7-inch full-HD AMOLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate and run on Android 14-based Nothing OS 2.5 out-of-the-box.

For photos and videos, the Nothing Phone 2a is rumoured to feature a dual rear camera setup comprising a 50-megapixel primary camera, along with a 50-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera. The smartphone is also said to be equipped with a 16-megapixel camera.

Nothing is expected to unveil the new affordable smartphone at the company’s next event that is scheduled to take place at this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC 2024). The company is yet to announce plans to launch a new handset, but recent leaks suggest that we can expect to see the handset debut at Nothing’s event that is scheduled to take place on February 27.

Google, Meta, Qualcomm Form Coalition for Open Digital Ecosystems in Light of New EU Tech Rules

Alphabet’s Google, Meta Platforms, Qualcomm and seven other tech companies on Wednesday teamed up to push for open digital ecosystems in response to new EU tech rules in a move that may also take the edge of possible future legislation.

Calling itself the Coalition for Open Digital Ecosystems (CODE), the group said it wants to promote more open platforms and systems to boost growth and innovation in Europe.

The group said it will work with academics, policymakers and companies on digital openness and how this can be achieved in Europe “through the implementation of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) and in future EU regulatory framework developments”.

The DMA requires gatekeepers — tech giants that control access to their platforms — to allow third parties to inter-operate with the gatekeeper’s own services and allow their business users to promote their offer and conclude contracts with their customers outside the gatekeeper’s platform.

“We have had a number of conversations in the past few months about what ‘good’ looks like when it comes to digital ecosystems in Europe, what fosters innovation, and what will positively impact competitiveness. We think openness is the crucial element,” Lynx founder Stan Larroque said in a statement.

Other members of the group are Chinese smart devices maker Honor, China’s Lenovo, French augmented reality start-up Lynx, US telecoms equipment maker Motorola, UK electronics maker Nothing, Norwegian tech company Opera and German messaging services provider Wire.

The Coalition said it aims to open up digital ecosystems through cross-industry collaboration and promote seamless connectivity and interoperable systems, among others.

Nothing Phone 2a Reportedly Spotted on BIS Website, Could Launch Soon in India

Nothing is expected to introduce a new smartphone to the market soon. The company has not confirmed any details about this, however a recent leak suggested that the Carl Pei-led firm is working on a third handset. Since the Nothing Phone 2 was launched in India in July this year, it is unlikely that the rumoured model will be the Nothing Phone 3. The product cycle of the UK-based OEM suggests that the next flagship model will likely be unveiled around July next year. Therefore, the purported third Nothing smartphone is expected to be a more affordable Nothing Phone 2a.

Tipster Abhishek Yadav (@yabhishekhd) shared on X that a Nothing smartphone with the model number A142 has been spotted on the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) website. The model number is similar to that of the purported Nothing Phone 2a, which reportedly carries model number AIN142.

The minor difference between the model numbers could be “due to regional differences or internal identifiers,” a 91Mobiles report suggests. The tipster adds that the listing also suggests a battery with the model number NT03 that is expected to be the battery for Nothing Phone 2a, which could be a different size than that of the one featured in Phone 1 and Phone 2.

Nothing Phone 2a is expected to be a less expensive variant of the Nothing Phone 2. This means that it is likely to come with skimmed down hardware. From the earlier leak, we learned that the Phone 2a could carry a 6.7-inch AMOLED display. The 91Mobiles report suggests that the lower price could translate into the phone not having an LTPO panel and carrying a mid-range Snapdragon or MediaTek Dimensity chipset.

A previous leak also showed a leaked design render of the rumoured Nothing Phone 2a that suggested the handset would carry the Glyph Interface and a transparent rear cover like all Nothing smartphones. The phone was still seen with a dual rear camera unit. It is also said to have a centre-aligned hole-punch slot at the top of the display to hold the front camera.

The Nothing Phone 2 is powered by Qualcomm’s 4nm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC and features a 6.7-inch full-HD (1,080 x 2,412 pixels) LTPO OLED screen. It packs a 4,700mAh battery with 45W wired and 5W Qi wireless charging support. The dual rear camera unit is equipped with a 50-megapixel 1/1.56-inch Sony IMX890 primary sensor with EIS and OIS support and another 50-megapixel sensor with an ultra-wide-angle lens. The phone also carries a 32-megapixel front camera.

Will the Nothing Phone 2 serve as the successor to the Phone 1, or will the two co-exist?
