Nothing Announces Phone 2a Community Edition Project, to Allow Users to Design a Special Edition Phone

Nothing recently teased an “industry first” initiative. The company has now revealed its plan for a ‘Community Edition Project’ where it is inviting people across the world to send in their ideas regarding a new variant of the recently unveiled Nothing Phone 2a. It is claimed to be a co-creation of the “community” and the Nothing Team. Nothing founder and CEO Carl Pei confirmed that this could be the first step towards the “community” being involved in co-developing new products or even the OS in the future. The Phone 2a was launched on March 5 with users recently started receiving the Nothing OS 2.5.4 update.

Nothing CEO Carl Pei announced the Nothing Phone 2a Community Edition Project wherein the UK-based OEM is taking design, wallpaper, and packaging ideas from the community – Nothing products users or otherwise. The invitation is open to all. All interested individuals are encouraged to submit ideas regarding a new Phone 2a variant.

The company further details that the Community Edition Project will span over six months and involve four stages. The hardware design submission will take place in March, followed by wallpaper design in May, packaging design in June, and marketing campaign ideas will have to be submitted July.

Nothing confirmed that the ideas can be put forth via any medium of the participant’s choice –  “images, video and/or other supporting media that best showcases” the idea and can be uploaded using the Community Edition Project webpage. Once the submission period closes for each stage, voting will begin on select ideas, which will be open to all. All valid submissions will then finally be judged by an “internal Nothing panel to select the winner at each stage.”

The Nothing Phone 2a starts in India at Rs. 23,999 for the 8GB + 128GB variant, while the 8GB + 256GB and 12GB + 256GB configurations are listed at Rs. 25,999 and Rs. 27,999, respectively. The phone is offered in Black and White colour options and is backed by a MediaTek Dimensity 7200 Pro SoC alongside a 5,000mAh battery with 45W wired fast charging support. It sports a 6.7-inch 120Hz full-HD+ AMOLED display, dual 50-megapixel rear cameras, and a 32-megapixel selfie camera.

Nothing to Unveil Something New on March 20, Carl Pei Says It’s an ‘Industry First’

Only weeks after launching the Nothing Phone 2a, company CEO Carl Pei is teasing something new is coming soon. In typical Nothing fashion, Pei hinted that the company will be unveiling something this week. Nothing posted a short video on X teasing the announcement. The company has not disclosed anything about this upcoming offering apart from revealing the date. Nothing recently launched the Phone 2a in India, the company’s first budget smartphone.

The official X handle of Nothing posted a ten-seconds long clip, on March 18. The snippet shows Pei in a conversation with Julie Duan, who as per her LinkedIn bio is a short-form content manager at Nothing. Pei captioned this short video as ‘an industry first’. As part of the conversation, Duan can be heard asking Pei, “So I think this is a bit of an industry first. Why do you think other companies haven’t done this before?”

Replying to Duan the Nothing chief just says, “Well, it’s uh…” following which the screen blacks out. The announcement will be made on March 20 as per teaser.

The post has managed to garner over 130,000 views in the last 24 hours. The comments section under this post has been flooding with all sorts of guesses. The Nothing team has not announced any specific time for the announcement. Nothing could announce a new app or software tomorrow.

In the first week of March this year, the company launched the budget-friendly Nothing Phone 2a with a MediaTek Dimensity 7200 Pro SoC chipset, 5,000mAh battery, and a new Glyph LED design. The two variants of this handset are priced Rs. 25,999 and Rs. 27,999.

Shortly after the launch of Phone 2a, Nothing’s sub-brand CMF introduced two wearable devices — the Neckband Pro offering 50dB hybrid active noise cancellation (ANC) and the CMF Buds that come with 42dB ANC support.

Headquartered in London, Nothing was founded in October 2020. Former OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei officially unveiled Nothing on January 27, 2021 – three months after Pei exited OnePlus. Between 2021 and 2024, Nothing has launched a bunch of wireless earphones alongside two mid-range flagship smartphones — the Nothing Phone 1 and Nothing Phone 2.

Nothing Phone 2, Phone 1 Users Can Access ChatGPT Voice Shortcut From The Home Screen

ChatGPT, the AI chatbot by OpenAI, was released for Android and iOS last year. Now, Nothing Phone users can get hands-free access to AI assistance with ChatGPT. Nothing Phone 1 and Phone 2 users can now quickly access ChatGPT voice commands directly from their home screen and Quick Setting panel with a new shortcut. The voice assistant works similarly to Google Assistant and Apple’s Siri.

Nothing CEO Carl Pei announced via a video post on X (formerly known as Twitter) that the Nothing Phone 1 and Phone 2 have received ChatGPT’s Quick Settings shortcut. With this, users of Nothing handsets can access ChatGPT’s voice Assistant through its new Quick Settings option.

As explained in the video post, Nothing OS users have to install the official ChatGPT android app from the Google Play Store and use the voice chat feature at least once within the app to get past the setup. Then users can add the ChatGPT shortcut in both the Quick Settings panel and Quick Settings widget. Tapping on this shortcut icon will run the ChatGPT-powered voice assistant.

With the latest development, ChatGPT will function like an assistant on Android devices like Google’s Assistant and Apple’s Siri.

Nothing CEO Carl Pei Teases Launch of Upcoming Smartphone; Purported Nothing Phone 2a Could Debut Soon

Nothing CEO Carl Pei has teased the launch of a new smartphone, which suggests that the purported Nothing Phone 2a could be launched by the company soon. According to details that have been leaked by tipsters, the UK-based startup led by Pei is planning to launch an affordable version of the Nothing Phone 2 that could be unveiled at the firm’s upcoming event that is scheduled to take place at the next Mobile World Congress (MWC 2024) on February 27.

In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), Nothing CEO Carl Pei confirmed that the company will launch a new smartphone, along with an image of what appears to be a cutout of a dragon from a popular cartoon series. The Chinese New Year — marking the start of the year of the Wood Dragon — will be celebrated on February 10.

While Pei’s post does not specify the name or model number of Nothing’s next handset or include details about when it will be launched, the company has scheduled an event titled Nothing to See that is scheduled for February 27, during MWC 2024. The alleged Nothing Phone 2a was previously spotted on the BIS India website, hinting at its upcoming debut in the country.

Last week, WinFuture’s Roland Quandt leaked the colour options as well as the RAM and storage configurations of the purported Nothing Phone 2a. The handset is said to be available in 8GB+128GB and 12GB+256GB options, in Black and White colourways. Pricing for the Nothing Phone 2a will be lower than EUR 400 (roughly Rs. 36,800) for the 8GB+128GB model, according to Quandt.

Recent reports suggest that the Nothing Phone 2a will be powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 7200 chipset and will run on Android 14-based Nothing OS 2.5. The handset is tipped to feature a 6.7-inch full-HD+ (1,084 x 2,412 pixels) AMOLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate. The design of the handset also surfaced online last month.

The purported Nothing Phone 2a is also said to be equipped with a dual rear camera setup comprising a 1/1.5-inch 50-megapixel Samsung S5KNG9 primary sensor and a 1/2.76-inch 50-megapixel Samsung S5KJN1 sensor with an ultrawide lens. The phone is tipped to sport a 32-megapixel selfie camera with a Sony IMX615 sensor, for selfies and video calls. We can expect to learn more about the Nothing Phone 2a from the company in the weeks leading up to its expected debut.

Nothing Schedules an Event During MWC 2024; May Offer a Sneak Peek at Phone 3

Nothing Phone 2 was launched in India in July this year as the second smartphone offering from the UK-based brand. The Nothing Phone 3 is expected to break the covers as a possible successor of the Phone 2 around a similar time in 2024. Now, the Carl Pei-led company has announced an event for February 2024 at the Mobile World Congress (MWC). This could be the first hint at its next product release. Notably, Nothing confirmed the arrival of Nothing Phone 2 during the MWC 2023.

Through a media invite, (via RapidZapper) Nothing has revealed that it has scheduled an event for the MWC 2024. The event billed as ‘Nothing to See’ will take place on February 27. The MWC 2024 event runs between February 26 and February 29 in Barcelona.

If Nothing’s past moves are anything to judge by, we can consider the February event an early teaser for the Nothing Phone 3 or Phone (2a). Nothing used previous MWC conferences to build hype for its Phone 1 and Phone 2. Carl Pei showcased a prototype of the Nothing Phone 1 back in MWC 2022 whereas the brand confirmed the Snapdragon 8-series processor for Phone 2 at this year’s MWC.

Rumours about the Nothing Phone 3 or Phone (2a) have already emerged on the Web earlier. The company is speculated to stick to its transparent back design with the next handset.

A Nothing smartphone with the model number A142 was recently spotted on the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) website. It is expected to come with a 6.7-inch AMOLED display and could include a mid-range Snapdragon or MediaTek Dimensity chipset.

Nothing currently has the Nothing Phone 1 and Nothing Phone 2 in its smartphone portfolio. The latter was unveiled in July with a starting price of Rs. 44,999 for the base 8GB RAM + 128GB storage configuration. It runs on the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC and features a revised Glyph Interface with LED lighting.

Nothing Announces CMF Sub-Brand in Community Update, Carl Pei Teases Launch of Smartwatch and Earbuds

Nothing has announced the launch of a new sub-brand — CMF by Nothing. The UK startup, led by OnePlus Co-Founder Carl Pei, is aiming to reach more consumers and will provide access to more affordable devices, starting with a smartwatch and a pair of earphones. The announcement comes a month after the company unveiled its second smartphone, the Nothing Phone 2, that is powered by a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor and features a reworked version of its unique Glyph Interface.

In a community update posted to YouTube on Thursday, Pei announced the launch of CMF by Nothing, a sub-brand that is aimed at “making a new range of products that make better design more accessible”. Stating that the value segment doesn’t have a lot of devices to “get excited about”, Pei says that the sub-brand will have a design-led organisation like Nothing, but doesn’t mention whether CMF devices will feature Nothing’s unique transparent design.

According to Pei, Nothing and CMF will have distinct roles to play. The former will continue to create premium, design-focussed products that feature the latest technology, while CMF by Nothing will make devices that are accessibly priced, to get more users to access Nothing’s ecosystem.

The CMF by Nothing sub-brand will be run by a separate team that will operate within the UK startup, according to Pei — a decision that was taken to prevent any “distraction from our main products”. He also teased the launch of a pair of wireless earphones and a smartwatch, which will debut later this year. Other details, including availability in markets like India, are yet to be revealed.

It appears that Nothing’s new sub brand will compete with affordable products from competitors like OnePlus, Oppo, Xiaomi, and other brands that offer devices that are cheaper than its Nothing Ear 2 and Nothing Ear Stick truly wireless stereo (TWS) earbuds. These products are priced at Rs. 8,999 and Rs. 4,999, respectively.

The announcement of the CMF by Nothing sub-brand comes a month after the company announced the launch of the Nothing Phone 2, a smartphone with notable upgrades over its first-generation handset. The phone is powered by last year’s flagship-grade Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC and features a 50-megapixel dual rear camera setup. It also sports a redesigned version of the LED-based Glyph Interface on the rear panel that has been updated with support for displaying progress bars from third party apps.

Nothing Phone 2 Design May Soon Be Cloned by Infinix for Upcoming Gaming Phone, Carl Pei Reacts

Nothing Phone 2 was launched in India earlier this week, and the design of the UK startup’s latest handset will soon be cloned by another smartphone company. Days after the debut of the Nothing Phone 2 in global markets, including India, Infinix has hinted that it will release a new smartphone with a similar rear design to Nothing’s handsets, from the dual rear camera setup to the inclusion of what appear to be LED strips on the rear panel. Nothing CEO Carl Pei also reacted to the development on Twitter.

Infinix shared a teaser of an upcoming smartphone dubbed “GT” in a press release on Thursday that was first posted to the company’s community platform, XClub. The image shared by the company shows what appears to be two diagrams of the Nothing Phone with a section of the Glyph Interface surrounding the letter N at the centre with the company’s dot matrix font. A third diagram depicts a handset that also sports two rear cameras at the top-left corner, and what appears to resemble the Glyph Interface on the rear panel.

The company also stated that the smartphone looks very similar to the recently launched Nothing Phone, and suggested that the phone will be aimed at gamers. However, it is difficult to ascertain whether the phone will simply feature a similar transparent rear panel like the Nothing Phone 2, or whether it will also feature LED strips and whether they will be used to display notifications like the recently launched handset from Nothing.

Meanwhile, Nothing CEO Carl Pei, who spotted a screenshot of the post shared by tipster Mukul Sharma on Twitter, was not impressed. “Time to get the lawyers ready!” he replied, along with a laughing emoji in response to a tweet by Sharma. Pei also confirmed to a Twitter user who asked if the Glyph Interface was patented, stating that the company had to protect its innovations.

Launched in India on July 11, the Nothing Phone 2 looks similar to the company’s first-generation Phone 1 that made its debut in the country last year. Aside from a few visual changes to the Glyph Interface and the switch to curved glass for the rear panel, as well as a centre-aligned hole punch selfie camera cutout, the Nothing Phone 2 is similar in appearance to its predecessor. However, the smartphone’s internals include a more powerful Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC, a larger LTPO OLED display, and a bigger 4,700mAh battery.

Nothing Phone 2 Confirmed to Get Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC: All Details

Nothing Phone 2 is expected to launch soon. Nothing CEO Carl Pei today confirmed the chipset to be used for the phone. According to earlier reports, the successor to Nothing Phone 1 is expected to be released between June and September this year. The first phone from Nothing launched with several unique features including its transparent Corning Gorilla Glass-protected back panel. Enthusiasts are expecting significant upgrades for the second phone from the company. Notably, Pei was the co-founder of OnePlus, who left the firm and set up Nothing in 2020.

In a tweet, Carl Pei confirmed that the Nothing Phone 2 will be powered by a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC. In a consecutive thread of tweets, Pei elaborated on why it is “a clear upgrade” from Nothing Phone 1.

According to Pei, initial tests revealed that the app opening speed on the Nothing Phone 2 is twice as fast compared to Phone 1. The upcoming smartphones is said to offer about 80 percent overall performance boost compared to its predecessor.

Nothing Phone 1 is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G+ SoC. In comparison, the Snapdragon 8 series chipset offers other significant enhancements apart from speed, like improved battery life, network connectivity, and camera proficiency.

The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC, Pei says, includes an 18-bit Image Signal Processor (ISP) enabling users to capture over 4,000 times more camera data than the ISP used on Nothing Phone 1. Therefore, the camera on Nothing Phone 2 is expected to offer upgraded features like Raw HDR and 4K recording at 60 fps.

The 4nm TSMC Snapdragon 8 series SoC offers best-in-class power consumption and heat management functionality, Pei adds. Other than justifying the selection of the chipset, Pei also defends the SoC itself. He states that it has completed thorough tests and regular optimisations via several updates since its launch a year back, suggesting that it offers the best experience now than it ever could.

Potentially predicting the question of why not use Qualcomm’s latest and fastest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, Pei clarified in one of the tweets preemptively that the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC was chosen above all other options to ensure accessibility for customers, without compromising on significant improvements over the company’s last smartphone.

Nothing Phone 1, offered in Black and White colour options, launched at a price of Rs. 32,999 for the 8GB + 128GB. The 8GB + 256GB and the 12GB + 256GB variants were marked at Rs. 35,999 and Rs. 38,999, respectively, at launch.

In a LinkedIn post, Alex Katouzian, Qualcomm’s SVP and GM of Mobile, Compute and XR business unit congratulated the Nothing team for its upcoming device and accidentally revealed that the Nothing Phone 2 will run on the Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 chipset.
