Oppenheimer sweeps Golden Globes taking best drama, actor and director | Cinema News

Christopher Nolan’s epic about the atomic bomb had eight nominations compared with nine for the box office blockbuster Barbie.

Oppenheimer, one of the biggest box office hits of 2023, has won multiple Golden Globes, as Hollywood kicked off its annual awards season.

Irish actor Cillian Murphy took home best male actor for his portrayal of scientist J Robert Oppenheimer in the film about the development of the atomic bomb.

The film was named best drama, Christopher Nolan the best director and Robert Downey Jr the best male supporting actor.

“I was in the hands of a visionary director, a master,” Murphy said as he accepted the Golden Globe on Sunday night.

Indigenous actor Lily Gladstone, a firm favourite, won best actress in a drama film for her role in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon.

The gothic comedy-drama Poor Things, from celebrated Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos, was named best film comedy or musical, and its star, Emma Stone, best actress in a film comedy or musical.

The Globes ceremony marks the start of Hollywood’s annual awards season, which culminates with the Oscars on March 10. Overhauled after a diversity and ethics scandal in 2021, the Globes recognise the best in film and television and brought the stars together for the first time after six months of strikes by actors and writers in 2023.

In television, the drama series Succession was named best television drama and took the top acting awards for its final season about the high-stakes battle for control of a global media empire. Kieran Culkin, who played the wayward son Roman Roy, landed the award for best actor, while Australian Sarah Snook won best actress. British actor Matthew Macfadyen took home best supporting actor for his role as her fictional husband, Tom Wambsgans.

Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri, meanwhile, were recognised for their leading roles in the television comedy The Bear, while road-rage saga Beef picked up best actor and actress limited series awards for Ali Wong and Steven Yeun.

Several Hollywood legends, from Meryl Streep to Robert De Niro and Jodie Foster, all Globe nominees vying for Oscars this year, were among those on the red carpet for the revamped awards.

Pop superstar Taylor Swift was also at the ceremony where she was nominated for best song.

That award went to Billie Eilish for What Was I Made For? which she wrote for Barbie.

The satire on misogyny and female empowerment made more than $1bn in ticket sales and was nominated for nine awards including best comedy and best director for Greta Gerwig.

It went home with the newly created trophy for box office achievement.

Among the other winners were the French courtroom drama Anatomy of a Fall, which won best screenplay and best film not in English, and The Boy and the Heron, which won best animated film for Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki.

Pat Sajak’s embarrassing ‘Wheel of Fortune’ cue-card meltdown

Call it the Great Cue-Card snafu.

Pat Sajak rang in the New Year on Monday’s “Wheel of Fortune” by bungling a contestant’s biographical information due to an unfortunate mishandling of his cue cards.

Sajak, 77 — who’s in his final year hosting the warhorse game show — was getting set to ask Jason, a psychiatric nurse practitioner, about his relationship status when he mis-shuffled his cue cards, resulting in an awkward exchange.

“Married man?” Sajak asked Jason, who appeared confused by the question.

“No, I’m single, actually,” he answered after waiting a beat.

“You know, I’m sorry,” Sajak said, laughing, “I just messed up a card, hold on.

“So you’re a circus acrobat, I see?,” he joked, before reading Jason’s correct biographical information: “Paris, Texas, as a single dad to two adopted boys.”

Pat Sajak screwed up his cue cards on Monday’s “Wheel of Fortune,” resulting in an embarrassing gaffe. ABC

Sajak then laughed the incident off.

“Nice to have you, Jason forgive me but it’s been a New Year’s weekend. You have to understand.”

The gaffe was just one of many awkward and embarrassing incidents involving Sajak on “Wheel of Fortune” in the past year or so.

Just last week, Sajak got testy with a contestant when she questioned a puzzle she couldn’t solve and lost out on $40,000.

The contestant named Jill, then asked Sajak: “What kind of puzzle is that?”

“It’s a puzzle you didn’t solve” Sajak fired back. “It’s getting testy here on Christmas.”

Pat Sajak’s gaffe on Monday’s show was one in a long line of awkward, embarrassing and uncomfortable situations on “Wheel of Fortune” in the past year or so. ABC

Last May, Sajak snapped at a contestant who tried and failed several times to answer the puzzle.

“Why are you bothering?” he said.

He has, in the recent past, put a contestant in a chokeholdclaimed he hides in letter-turner Vanna White’s gardenasked a contestant to remove his shirt, and tugged on a contestant’s beard.

Sajak’s last episode will likely air in June 2024.

Bruce Willis’ wife Emma warns against having a ‘toxic’ attitude as he battles dementia

Bruce Willis’ wife, model Emma Heming Willis, is trying to stay positive amid his battle with dementia.

On Tuesday, Emma, 45, posted a photo of a page from what appeared to be the book, “Floating in the Deep End: How Caregivers Can See Beyond Alzheimer’s.”

She drew attention to a passage that read, “People caring for a loved one with dementia tend to think that the patient is the important one, and they themselves are not as important. Not only does that make no sense, it’s a toxic attitude to have about yourself. Your health deserves attention too – both your physical health and your mental health.”

Emma circled the quote and wrote via Instagram Story, “An important reminder from lsarnernyp, Lauren Sarner Patti Davis.”

Davis, 71, is the daughter of former President Ronald Reagan, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 1994 and died 10 years later, at age 93.

Willis, 68, stepped back from acting in 2022, after being diagnosed with aphasia. In February 2023, his loved ones further revealed that his condition had worsened and that he had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia.

“Moonlighting” creator Glenn Gordon Caron, who is still friends with Willis, told the Post in October that the actor is not “totally verbal.”

Emma reportedly met Bruce at their mutual trainer’s gym in 2007, and they tied the knot two years later. They have two daughters together — Mabel, 11, and Evelyn, 9 — and she’s also the stepmother to Willis’ three daughters with his ex-wife, Demi Moore, 61: Rumer, 35, Scout, 32, and Tallulah, 29.

His family has rallied around him, including Moore – Willis’ family is reportedly all staying under one roof to support him during his health struggles.

“Bruce has good days and bad days, but in the last two months, there are many more bad days than good,” a source recently told Us Weekly.

“This experience has brought the whole family even closer together. No one knows how much time Bruce has left, so they’re soaking up every moment they get with him.”

“Once Bruce was diagnosed, everyone came together to keep his memory of the family intact and to be there as a constant reminder [that they] love him. [Everything] revolves around him,” a second source said.

“Sadly, there’s this ticking clock connected to Bruce’s condition,” they added. “Everyone has come together for Bruce. They’re thankful they have each other.”

Last week, Emma celebrated her 16-year anniversary with Bruce, thanking their “inner circle” for support as the “Die Hard” actor deals with his condition.

“I receive countless messages of love and support because Bruce is so beloved. That showers on him and I am fortunate enough to stand below that to catch those sprinkles that yet, feel like a waterfall of kindness,” she posted.

“I wish I could answer all the messages because they are deep, raw and poetic but please know that I appreciate them so very much. It also makes me feel less alone.”

Serial killer Mickey Mouse film trailer drops same day US copyright expires

Mickey Mouse isn’t just for kids anymore.

A trailer has dropped for a horror comedy film in which Mickey Mouse is the psycho killer – on the first day that the 1928 Disney short film “Steamboat Willie” has entered the public domain.

“Steamboat Willie” was directed by Walt Disney, and it’s an 8-minute short that was the first film to introduce the famous cartoon.

It was also considered groundbreaking at the time, for having synchronized sound.

“Steamboat Willie” entered the public domain on Jan. 1, 2024, and shortly after, a trailer dropped for the horror indie “Mickey’s Mouse Trap.”

The trailer features a sinister looking psycho in a Mickey Mouse costume, stalking people in an arcade.

The movie will follow a young woman on her 21st birthday who is doing a late shift at an amusement arcade – so, her friends surprise her. But a masked killer dressed as Mickey Mouse has his own game to play with them all.

The movie stars Sophie McIntosh, Callum Sywyk, Allegra Nocita, Ben Harris, Damir Kovic, Mackenzie Mills, Nick Biskupek and Simon Phillips.

Despite Disney trying to protect its characters, according to U.S. copyright law, works published between 1923 and 1978 are protected for 95 years following the date of publication.

Disney has tried to prevent this from happening, over the years — in 1998, it lobbied for the Copyright Extension Act, which added 20 years, adding up to 95 years. That act would eventually be dubbed the “Mickey Mouse Protection Act.”

“Ever since Mickey Mouse’s first appearance in the 1928 short film ‘Steamboat Willie,’ people have associated the character with Disney’s stories, experiences, and authentic products,” a Disney spokesperson said in a statement.

“That will not change when the copyright in the Steamboat Willie film expires. We will, of course, continue to protect our rights in the more modern versions of Mickey Mouse and other works that remain subject to copyright.”

“Mickey’s Mouse Trap” director Jamie Bailey told the Hollywood Reporter, “We just wanted to have fun with it all. I mean it’s ‘Steamboat Willie‘s’ Mickey Mouse murdering people. It’s ridiculous. We ran with it and had fun doing it and I think it shows.”

In the original cartoon short, Mickey Mouse gets into mischievous antics, such as fighting with a goat and playing animals like musical instruments, but it was a kid-friendly cartoon with no slasher movie action.

Bailey isn’t the only director to jump on Mickey Mouse’s new availability in the public domain – according to Variety, there’s another untitled horror movie in production directed by Steven LaMorte, also based on “Steamboat Willie,” in which a sadistic mouse will torment passengers on a ferry.

“Steamboat Willie has brought joy to generations, but beneath that cheerful exterior lies a potential for pure, unhinged terror,” LaMorte told the outlet. “It’s a project I’ve been dreaming of, and I can’t wait to unleash this twisted take on this beloved character to the world.”

“Mickey’s Mouse Trap” does not yet have an announced release date, but according to the outlet, it’s aiming for March.

Ian Ziering breaks silence after ‘unsettling’ biker gang attack

Ian Ziering is speaking out following the “alarming” biker attack he experienced on New Year’s Eve.

The “Beverly Hills, 90210” alum, 59, took to Instagram about the incident on Monday.

“Yesterday, I experienced an alarming incident involving a group of individuals on mini bikes,” he wrote. “While stuck in traffic, my car was approached aggressively by one of these riders leading to an unsettling confrontation. In an attempt to assess any damage I exited my car. This action, unfortunately, escalated into a physical altercation, which I navigated to protect myself.”

“I am relieved to report that my daughter and I are both completely unscathed, but the incident has left me deeply concerned about the growing boldness of such groups who disrupt public safety and peace.”

In a video of the altercation obtained by TMZ, Ziering can be seen getting into a fight with several bikers on Hollywood Blvd. on Sunday.

At one point, multiple bikers aggressively approached the actor as he tried to run across the street to get away. He later was spotted consoling his crying daughter Mia, 12, who was in the car with him at the time.

“This situation highlights a larger issue of hooliganism on our streets and the need for effective law enforcement responses to such behavior. As a citizen and a parent, I find it unacceptable that groups can freely engage in this kind of behavior, causing fear and chaos, while the response from authorities seems insufficient,” the actor continued on Monday.

“I have always been an advocate for standing up against intimidation and misconduct, and this incident reinforces my belief in the importance of personal and community safety,” he went on. “We must address the underlying issues that lead to such disruptive behavior and ensure that our streets are safe for everyone. I urge city officials and law enforcement to take decisive action against such lawlessness and provide the necessary resources to prevent future occurrences.”

Ziering concluded his message by stating he’s “thankful for the support of my family, friends, and fans during this time.”

“It’s in challenging moments like these that the strength and unity of our community are most vital,” he added. “Happy new year.”

Billie Lourd feels mom Carrie Fisher’s ‘presence’ 7 years after death

May the force always be with Billie Lourd.

The “Scream Queens” star, 31, penned a heartfelt tribute to her mother, the late Carrie Fisher, on the seventh anniversary of her death.

Fisher and her mother, actress Debbie Reynolds, both died within a day of each other in late December 2016.

Lourd posted a throwback photo of herself and the “Star Wars” actress playing on the beach via social media.

“Every anniversary brings a different iteration of my grief. Some infuse me with rage, some make me cry all day long, some make me feel dissociated and empty,” she wrote on Wednesday.

The “American Horror Story” alum added that some anniversaries make her “feel nothing” and “some make me feel guilty for feeling nothing.”

This year, Lourd noted that she woke up feeling “grateful — or griefull — if you will.”

“Grief has infused my life with a sense of appreciation I had never had before. It makes me soak up every moment of joy as if it were my last,” she wrote.

She further described how her “eyes welled up with tears of joy” when she held her daughter, Jackson, on Wednesday.

“I laughed at myself then cried more cause I was laughing. I felt my mom’s presence like the warmth of the sun on your skin on a hot summer day,” she continued.

“The kind of warmth where you unknowingly close your eyes and take a slow breath through your nose and grin,” Lourd added.

The “Booksmart” actress scribed that she “missed [her mom] every day, but the cliche is also true.”

“She is with me every day, she infuses my joyful moments with even more joy,” Lourd penned.

“As I tell my son, she lives in the stars — and she damn sure makes my life sparkle,” she concluded. “Sending my love to all my griefers out there. And hoping everyone can feel a little sparkle of griefull among all the feelings grief inevitably brings.”

Lourd also shares son Kingston, 3, with husband Austin Rydell.

Fisher died at the age of 60 on Dec. 27, 2016, after suffering a massive heart attack aboard a plane.

The “Singin’ in the Rain” icon passed away the next day from a stroke.

Earlier this year, Lourd honored her late mom when she was posthumously awarded with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

She donned a maxi dress that was painted with an image of Princess Leia, Fisher’s character from the famed “Star Wars” franchise.

South Korean actor and Parasite star Lee Sun-kyun dies at 48 | Arts and Culture News

The actor had been under investigation for alleged illegal drug use. Seoul police point to apparent suicide.

South Korean actor Lee Sun-kyun, best known for his role in the Oscar-winning film Parasite, has been found dead, police said.

Lee, 48, died by apparent suicide in a Seoul park on Wednesday, according to officials in the capital.

The actor had been under police investigation over his alleged drug use. Infringements of South Korea’s tough drug laws can lead to six months in jail, or up to 14 years for repeat offenders and dealers.

Lee was found in a car at a park in central Seoul, police said.

“Less than 30 minutes earlier, his manager had called for help after the embattled actor left his home, leaving behind what appeared to be a suicide note,” said Al Jazeera’s Eunice Kim, reporting from Seoul.

South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported, citing police, that Lee had left a “note that reads like a will”.

“The top actor had been under intense pressure since October,” our correspondent said. “That’s when he faced allegations of drug use, including marijuana, which is a high crime here in South Korea. Over the weekend he underwent intense police questioning, some 19 hours.”

The actor had faced police questioning three times over accusations of illegal drug use amid a government crackdown.

Lee had said he was tricked into taking drugs that he believed were sleeping pills by a bar hostess trying to blackmail him, our correspondent said.

South Korea is under a wider crackdown on drug use after President Yoon Suk-yeol declared a war on drugs this year.

“Several celebrities have been called in for questioning in recent months,” Kim said. “South Korea does have some of the strictest rules when it comes to illegal substances, with prison time upwards of 14 years even if the drug use happened outside of the country.”

Our correspondent said messages of grief had been pouring in since news of Lee’s death was confirmed.

Once celebrated for his wholesome image, local news outlets reported that the actor was being dropped from television and commercial projects following the drug use scandal.

A graduate of South Korea’s prestigious Korea National University of Arts, Lee made his acting debut in 2001 in a television sitcom titled Lovers.

He later won acclaim for his performances in a variety of roles, including a charismatic chef and a genius neuroscientist who is incapable of empathy.

Globally, he is best known for his portrayal of the wealthy and shallow patriarch in director Bong Joon-ho’s 2019 Oscar-winning film, Parasite.

Meghan Markle’s desire ‘to go back to acting’ will test business relationship with Prince Harry, top astrologer predicts

Meghan Markle’s desire to return to Hollywood in 2024 will likely have a negative effect on her business partnership with Prince Harry, according to a renowned astrologer.

Susan Miller, founder of Astrology Zone, believes that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s relationship will experience some hardships in the coming year as Markle sets her sights on an acting comeback.

Miller told the Daily Mail that Harry, who quit royal life and hightailed it across the pond in 2020, will start to miss his old life on home soil.

“I think of Harry in a bucolic, beautiful setting. Santa Barbara is the closest thing to paradise I’ve ever seen, and it doesn’t have the hustle (and) bustle though,” Miller told the outlet.

“It’s gorgeous, but he used to have 20 detail men following him around, and all the things he was doing. His life has changed dramatically.”

“Now, living in Santa Barbara is perfect for the children, and I know he loves to play polo…He loves history and family,” she added.

According to the astrologer, the Sussexes will butt heads when it comes to their respective careers, as the “Suits” alum will be looking to return to the acting arena once more.

“I think [Harry] is going to miss London, and I don’t know how they’re going to figure that out. I think it’s great when the kids are little, because, of course, they need places to play, and just be kids, and they’re gonna have the privacy there,” Miller said.

“But Meghan wants to go back to acting…I don’t think the [Netflix] business plan of creating movies is the way it’s going to go. I think she will go back to work.”

“I also think they may need a constant supply of money because they’ve sort of told all the family secrets, they don’t have any more to tell. I think we all know too much…It’s an odd situation,” she added.

Miller issued a stark warning to Virgos for 2024, saying that either marriages or business partnerships “will be tested.”

The astrologer claims that Harry, who quit royal life and hightailed it across the pond in 2020, will start to miss his old life on home soil. REUTERS

“You will have to come up with imaginative solutions, or you may decide to leave the situation,” she said, before speaking about Harry, a Virgo, and Markle, a Leo, respectively.

“It will be [Harry] who is going through the test. But what’s interesting is [Meghan] felt it and is coming out of it. He’s going into it because Leo had it already. He’s the one finding it difficult.”

Friends star Matthew Perry died of ketamine overdose, autopsy finds | Entertainment News

Los Angeles medical examiner says drowning and heart disease were contributing factors in actor’s accidental death.

“Friends” actor Matthew Perry, who was found dead in a jacuzzi at his Los Angeles home in October, died from an accidental ketamine overdose, an autopsy has found.

Perry, who played the wise-cracking Chandler Bing in the popular US sitcom, passed away from the “acute effects” of the sedative, with drowning a secondary cause in his October 28 death at age 54, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office said on Friday.

Heart disease and “the effects of buprenorphine,” a drug used to treat opioid abuse, were also contributing factors, the autopsy report said.

Perry, who spoke openly about his struggles with alcohol and opiate addiction, had reportedly been undergoing ketamine treatment for anxiety and depression but took his last known infusion more than a week before his death, which would have been long enough for the drug to have left his system.

“The exact method of intake in Mr. Perry’s case is unknown,” the report said.

The autopsy did not detect alcohol or other drugs such as cocaine, heroin or fentanyl in Perry’s system.

In his 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, Perry wrote about taking ketamine daily at certain points to help with addiction, pain and depression.

“Has my name written all over it – they might as well have called it ‘Matty,’” he wrote of the drug.

Perry became one of the world’s most recognised actors during Friends’ 10-year run from 1994 to 2004.

The sitcom, also starring Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer, followed the ups and downs of six young singletons in New York.

Perry’s sudden death stunned his castmates, friends, family and fans worldwide, drawing heartfelt tributes for the Canadian-born actor.

“Oh boy this one has cut deep,” Aniston, who played Rachel on Friends, said on Instagram shortly after his death.

“He was such a part of our DNA. We were always the 6 of us. This was a chosen family that forever changed the course of who we were and what our path was going to be.”

Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Brady party together at star-studded Art Basel Miami bash

Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Brady were flocked by a bounty of beauties at Wayne and Cynthia Boich’s ridiculously star-studded private mansion party celebrating Art Basel Miami on Friday night.

“Leo and Tom were letting loose at a back table at the party,” a partygoer tells Page Six of Boich’s exclusive waterfront fête where Snoop Dogg and Lil Wayne performed.

“They were both dancing to the music and all these beautiful women were surrounding Tom.”

Another source added that the former NFL star looked like he was “on the hunt” for a lady and the “Killers of the Flower Moon” actor was “basically a wingman” for the retired quarterback.

“They didn’t have to lift a finger,” the second source added, explaining that women were bee-lining for their packed table all night.

And a little rain didn’t stop Brady, 46, and the Hollywood star, 49, from keeping the night going.

“All of a sudden, it started raining and Leo and Tom stayed at their table and just looked like they were having an amazing time while other guests sought shelter inside Wayne’s house,” the partygoer said.

At one point, Brady was seen laughing and smiling while DiCaprio, wearing his signature black baseball hat, closely chatted in a corner with Sean Penn.

We’re told DiCaprio, who usually keeps a low profile, was a “total social butterfly” and was seen flitting around the party to schmooze with other celebrities and attendees.

“Leo looked like he was having the best time ever,” a spy tells us.

DiCaprio and Brady both stayed at the party until well after midnight before making their exit.

Meanwhile, Snoop, 52, was seen decompressing with a smoke session at the back of the party after performing for nearly an hour for the intimate crowd. He belted out several of his hits, including “Gin and Juice,” “Drop It Like It’s Hot” and “Young, Wild & Free.”

Lil Wayne, 41, then took to the stage and rapped an impressive set featuring songs “Lollipop,” “A Milli” and “6 Foot 7 Foot.”

Other stars spotted at the A-list soirée included Dwyane Wade, Venus and Serena Williams, Cindy Crawford and husband Rande Gerber, Corey Gamble, Tyga, Jimmy Butler, Victor Cruz, Lindsey Vonn and boyfriend Diego Osorio, AE Edwards, Harvey Spevak, Noah Tepperberg and wife Melissa Wood and Google co-founder Sergey Brin.

As Page Six reported on Friday, Brady is “dating around” and keeping his options open after his short-lived fling with Irina Shayk.

Brady and Shayk, 37, both attended DiCaprio’s Re:Wild event at the Superblue Museum on Thursday night.

“Brady was at the party briefly and he said hi to her, but he also said hi to a lot of other people,” a spy said.

The duo sparked dating rumors in May but things fizzled after less than four months together due to conflicting schedules. The former quarterback’s short chapter with the supermodel was his first public relationship following his October 2022 divorce from Gisele Bündchen.

Brady and the former Victoria’s Secret model, who were married for 13 years, share two kids: Vivian, 11, and Benjamin, 13. The athlete also shares son Jack, 16, with ex Bridget Moynahan.

Meanwhile, DiCaprio is seemingly off the market now that he’s getting serious with Vittoria Ceretti.

He and the Italian model, 25, have been romantically linked since they were seen making out on the dancefloor in Ibiza, Spain, in August.

“They’ve been spending quite a bit of time together over the past few months, and they’re enjoying getting to know one another on a deeper level,” an insider told Page Six in September while confirming their relationship.

The Oscar-winner, who was seen eyeing art pieces at the convention center earlier this week, most recently dated Gigi Hadid following his August 2022 breakup with his girlfriend of four years, Camila Morrone.

Interestingly, Hadid, 28, has recently sparked dating rumors with Shayk’s ex-partner, Bradley Cooper.

Shayk and the “Maestro” actor, 48, were together for four years before splitting in June 2019 and continue to co-parent their 6-year-old daughter, Lea De Seine.
