VMAs 2022 best & worst performances, from Blackpink to Nicki Minaj

Perhaps the best performance at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards — held for the second time at the Prudential Center on Sunday night — didn’t even take place on the VMAs stage. That was when Artist of the Year winner Bad Bunny had the audience hopping from his show at Yankee Stadium, whether they were concertgoers or viewers watching the awards all around the around.

But it was also a night that big winner Jack Harlow, who took home four VMAs, and Video Vanguard recipient Nicki Minaj were better at performing than they were at co-hosting. Meanwhile, Global Icon Award honorees Red Hot Chili Peppers led a rock resurgence that also featured Panic! At the Disco and Italian breakout band Maneskin.

Before MTV goes back to forgetting about music for another year, we look back on the best and worst performances of the 2022 VMAs.

Worst: Blackpink

Doing “Pink Venom” — from their upcoming second album “Born Pink,” due Sept. 16 — the K-pop girl group underwhelmed in their debut performance on a US awards show. It was bad enough that many in the audience — both in the Prudential Center and around the world watching — probably didn’t know the song, but the stiff, lifeless performance failed to establish the group as a live force to be reckoned with on the VMAs stage.

Best: Jack Harlow, Fergie and Lizzo

Co-host Jack Harlow gets props for bring back Fergie from the musical oblivion — where exactly has she been? — after he generously sampled her 2007 hit “Glamorous” on his 2022 No. 1 hit “First Class.” Respect was due, and he gave it to a star much in need of some love. And then when you added Lizzo to the opening on “2 B Loved (Am I Ready),” well, we already know that Lizzo makes everything better.

Best: Nicki Minaj

It took almost an hour for co-host Nicki Minaj to show up to the VMAs stage. But when she did, the 39-year-old Queens MC made a show-stopping statement that proved why she — haters be damned — was worthy of this year’s Video Vanguard Award. A pink-haired Minaj owned the candy-coated set to the delight of her legion of Barbies in a medley that veered from her killer verse on Kanye West’s “Monster” to solo hits “Beez in the Trap,” “Moment 4 Life,” “Super Bass” and “Anaconda” that showcased her range of styles and flows. At the end of a mini-set that proved why she is one of the best female rappers of all time, she was even to be excused for some obvious lip-syncing during her current No. 1 hit “Super Freaky Girl.”

Worst: Eminem and Snoop Dogg

The King of Cannabis, Snoop Dogg, got Eminem “high” during the performance.

After seeing Em and Snoop rocking the Super Bowl halftime stage in February in real effing life, the whole metaverse performance of their new single “From the D 2 the LBC” was a major letdown. I mean, who wants virtual versions of these two rap legends — especially when the flesh-and-blood icons are actually in the house? The whole thing felt like a gimmicky, desperate attempt to make these aging rappers look relevant. But at least they redeemed themselves a bit at the end by appearing and performing all the way live.

Best: Red Hot Chili Peppers

The Chili Peppers got a humorous introduction from Cheech and Chong before they gave their Global Icon Award performance. But once the band took the stage, it was serious business as they put the M — music — back into MTV and the VMAs. From the moment they launched into their 2022 hit “Black Summer,” there was no doubt that the Chili Peppers were performing completely live. Imagine that? The pure joy of seeing badass bassist Flea and guitar god John Frusciante jamming together on stage almost made you think that you were watching the Grammys for a second. And the boundless energy that the Chili Peppers displayed — 22 years after they already won MTV’s Video Vanguard Award — as they returned to their rap-rock roots on “Can’t Stop” made you wonder just how many of this year’s acts would still be rocking the VMAs stage 37 years after their debut. I’m betting exactly none.

Follow the 2022 VMAs with our up-to-the-minute coverage:

Best: Bad Bunny

After his VMAs remote performance from Yankee Stadium, a triumphant Bad Bunny hoisted his trophy for Artist of the Year.
MTV

First Kane Brown became the first male country star to ever perform at the VMAs in a rousing performance of “Grand” from the Toyoya Stage that made Fort Lee, NJ look like Nashville. Then Puerto Rican sensation Bad Bunny one-upped him with a remote performance from Yankee Stadium on his second of two nights that were the hottest ticket in town. It had already been a big night for Latin artists, including performances by Anitta, and J Balvin and Ryan Castro. But a satin-suited Bad Bunny was the hottest of them all, delivering the kind of electric performance that beat just about any other one of the night. You could really feel the energy of the crowd rocking and rapping along with the reggaeton superstar to “Titi Me Pregunto.” And it was fitting that he was able to receive his Artist of the Year award — beating out Styles, who failed to do a remote performance from his own show at Madison Square Garden — in front of his adoring fans.

Thom Filicia sells upstate New York home to friend for $4.6M

“Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” interior designer Thom Filicia has sold his Skaneateles, New York home in an off-market deal for $4.6 million.

The TV host not only found a buyer for the five-bedroom upstate lakefront spread, but a buyer who’s a longtime friend.

“They separately bought about 60% of the furnishings and they want to reupholster and update some pieces,” Filicia, who hails from nearby Syracuse, told The Post. The buyer, who requested anonymity, also wants to work with Filicia on renovating the boat house, making the space more child-friendly (they have a young daughter) and customizing an outdoor cooking area.

Filicia purchased the property, where he spent weekends when away from his Chelsea apartment, for $965,000 in 2008, Syracuse.com reported. He came upon it while driving back from a friend’s wedding and spotting a “For Sale” sign.

“I was not in the market to buy the house,” he said — a theme for Filicia, who also just bought a Sag Harbor home after finding a property by happenstance.

“My brother was looking for a new house in the Hamptons and asking me my opinion,” he said. Filicia found a house he liked — on the water, gated and with three modern barns — and suggested it to his sibling.

Filicia sold the lakefront upstate home off-market.

Then, a few weeks later while in Los Angeles, his phone rang. It was the childhood friend, and she wanted to know if she could buy his house and enlist his expertise for personalizing it.

“I decided that instead of having two properties in Skaneateles, I’d figure out something else, and I thought, ‘Wait a minute, there’s the house I found with my brother in Sag Harbor. Maybe I should see if that’s available,’ ” he said.

It was, and now it’s his. (His brother went with another home in the area.)

“It was kind of like this storybook” of organic coincidences, Filicia said of the series of real-estate deals.

He now plans to split his time between fixing up the Sag Harbor home, spending time in New York City and continuing to enjoy Skaneateles, where he still owns a federal-style mixed-use building he’s in the process of converting into apartments.

As for his incredibly good luck with property acquisition processes, all he can offer by way of an explanation is simply that “[rescue] dogs and houses always find me.”

Britney teams up with Elton for first new music since 2016

It feels as if the whole world has been embracing Britney Spears since the #FreeBritney movement began in 2019.

And finally freed from the 13-year conservatorship that ended last November, the pop superstar is now getting some support from Elton John — a music legend who knows how it feels to be still standing after years of struggles — on “Hold Me Closer,” her first newly recorded single since 2016.

The cross-generational collaboration between 40-year-old Spears and the 75-year-old Rocket Man — which dropped from the dream-duet heavens on Friday morning — is a radical reworking of John’s 1971 classic “Tiny Dancer.” Indeed, it’s such an extreme makeover that they gave the song it’s own new name taken from the original’s chorus. All together now, “Hold me closer, tiny dancer!”

While “Tiny Dancer” was an epic ballad that took your inner ballerina pirouetting across the keys in a fanciful flight, “Hold Me Closer” goes twirling directly under the disco ball with some thumping beats but also a light airiness that captures some of the graceful beauty of the original.

Like John’s recent hit with Dua Lipa — “Cold Heart (Pnau remix),” which mashed up “Rocket Man” with a few of his other songs — “Hold Me Closer,” produced by Andrew Watt and Cirkut, also features elements of Elton’s “The One” and “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.”

The cover of Britney Spears and Elton John’s new single “Hold Me Closer.”

And while their digitally altered voices sometimes blend into one another where you can hardly tell the difference, it’s great to hear the moments when Spears’ distinctive, much-missed chirp stands out.

And after the its initial futuristic electro-whirl, “Hold Me Closer” brings you back down to earth with John’s piano work at the end.

The beginnings of this collaboration go all the way back to 2015, when Spears professed her love for “Tiny Dancer” in a tweet. And now, after six long years away from music, this is hopefully just the start of the long-awaited Britney comeback.

‘Sweeney Todd’ revival starring Josh Groban headed to Broadway

The Demon Barber of Fleet Street has returned!

A revival of the late Stephen Sondheim’s musical “Sweeney Todd” starring singer Josh Groban was announced Tuesday and is set to slice its way onto Broadway sometime in the spring, reports Broadway Journal.

The production will see the 41-year-old Groban starring as the demon barber himself while his pie-baking accomplice Mrs. Lovett will be played by Annaleigh Ashford. The production will be directed by “Hamilton” alum Thomas Kail.

“Sweeney Todd” tells the story of a revenge-seeking barber in Victorian London who goes on a spree of dreadful murders and uses his business partner Mrs. Lovett to help dispose of his victim’s bodies.

The musical originally debuted on Broadway in 1979 starring Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury and has been revived off-Broadway several times over the years, including one immersive experience in 2016.

In 2007, the musical was adapted as a film starring Helena Bottom Carter and Johnny Depp.

The revival is the latest in a string of Stephen Sondheim musicals that have graced the Great White Way since the composer’s death in 2021.

Sondheim’s “Into the Woods” opened at the St. James Theatre in July for a limited engagement, while the Tony-winning revival of “Company” recently concluded its run.

It was announced last Wednesday that a revival of another Sondheim musical “Merrily We Roll Along” starring “Harry Potter” alum Daniel Radcliffe and “Hamilton” star Jonathan Groff will premiere in November.

Producers of “Sweeney Todd” have yet to give an exact date for when the show is expected to open.

The worrying news comes after Farnham was plagued with yet another health woe in 2019.

In 2019, he told The Daily Telegraph he was forced to cut his tour short following a “severe” kidney infection.

“I didn’t realize until too late,” he told the outlet of his condition at the time. I’d been feeling uncomfortable. My wife Jill had been telling me to go to the doctor.”

He said the ordeal forced him to “wake-up call to look after myself a bit more.”

It comes just weeks after Farnham was left heartbroken over the death of his longtime friend, Olivia Newton-John.

The “Grease” legend died earlier this month following a long battle with cancer, as Farnham paid tribute on social media.

“Behind that iconic smile was a tenacious fighter. A beautiful voice and a loyal friend. She will be greatly missed,” the singer wrote on Facebook.

He was the last person to perform on stage with the “Hopelessly Devoted To You” hitmaker. The pair performed three songs together at the Fire Fight Australia bushfire relief gig in February 2020.

Adam Sandler cheers ‘Happy Gilmore’ caddy lookalike Will Zalatoris after first win

Golfer Will Zalatoris got a special shout-out from “Happy Gilmore” star Adam Sandler.

Last year, Sandler, 55, heard about the Masters candidate who resembled his caddy (played by actor Jared Van Snellenberg) from the 1996 sports flick.

At the time, the comedian tweeted a photo of Zalatoris, 26, next to a scene still of Happy Gilmore’s caddy. “Have fun today young man. Mr. Gilmore is watching you and very proud,” he wrote.

To which, the golf pro jokingly responded, “If you’re ever in need of a caddie again let me know. I’ll be better this time. I’m always available for you, Mr. Gilmore.”

Then, on Aug. 14, Zalatoris won his first PGA Tour event, at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, Tennessee.

The “Hustle” actor didn’t miss his moment to show further support. He tweeted on Sunday, “Congrats Will! I’m happy for you! Happy’s happy for you! Enjoy it all!”

Twitter/Adam Sandler

“Happy Gilmore” starred Sandler as an ex-hockey player who finds a new passion in golf. The hot headed athlete then joins a pro golf tour in order to score money to save his grandmother’s house.

The blockbuster comedy also featured Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald, Carl Weathers and Francis Bay.

Last year marked the 25th anniversary of the golf comedy, which Sandler celebrated by teeing-up with the film’s signature three-step approach. His smartphone camera was rolling as he launched the ball in the style of Gilmore.

Zalatoris won his first PGA tournament on Aug. 14.

“Happy Gilmore” premiered in 1996 and starred Sandler as a man who finds a love of golf.

He dedicated the swing to his character’s rival, Shooter McGavin (McDonald).

“Shooter McGavin, this is for you!” Sandler proclaimed in the video he shared on social media last year. “I’m not lying to you. That is smashed. Smashed. That went pretty well. You’re dead, Shooter!”

PGA tour stars Jordan Spieth and Rory Mcllroy also helped commemorate the occasion with a montage of their attempts at the iconic swing.

Harry Styles takes it to the bedroom on ‘Harry’s House’

It’s called “Harry’s House,” but the much-anticipated new album by the hottest male pop star on the planet — that would be, duh, Harry Styles — plays more like “Harry’s Boudoir.”

Indeed, the sexy intimacy on Styles’ third solo album makes you feel like you’re peeking through the bedroom door as the former One Direction heartthrob is putting it down with his current flame, actress Olivia Wilde.

Yup, putting it down.

Owning all of the hip-swerving swagger that made “Watermelon Sugar” a No. 1 hit in 2020 and won Styles his first Grammy, the singer is a ball of falsetto friskiness at the beginning of “Harry House.”

“Green eyes, fried rice, I could cook an egg on you/Late night, game time, coffee on the stove/You’re sweet ice cream, but you could use a flake or two/Blue bubblegum twisted around your tongue,” coos Styles, grinding up agains a greasy bass line in his best falsetto at the beginning of the album opener “Music for a Sushi Restaurant.

Clearly, the trumpets aren’t the only things that are horny on this jazz-kissed come-on. And whatever’s on the menu, you’ll just be like, “I’ll have what he’s having.”

And Styles is having his way with you — and whoever you happen to be getting down with in any corner of your house  — on his sexiest album to date.

The very next track, “Late Night Talking,” is made for late-night grooving — perhaps of the horizontal variety — as Styles floats atop a groove reminiscent of Dua Lipa’s “Levitating.”

And if you thought there were jazz vibes on “Music for a Sushi Restaurant,” Styles even scats here. Yes, scats. And he pulls it off.

Although the title of the album is a reference to the Joni Mitchell song “Harry’s House/Centerpiece,” Steely Dan and, more recently, Jamiroquai (remember him?) are more like Styles’ muses on songs such as “Grapejuice,” a summer-ready romantic bop, and “Daydreaming,” a perfect soul-pop soufflé that adds a dash of the 5th Dimension into the mix.

Although the No. 1 single “As It Was” set the shimmying, shimmering stage for the album — with its ’80s pogo pop that has you breaking out your best Molly Ringwald moves — the second half of “Harry’s House” settles into dreamy, woozy balladry that will have you booing up — or getting on Tinder to find one.

Former One Direction heartthrob Harry Styles explores his side on “Harry’s House.”

When the album ends with “Love of My Live” — which couldn’t possibly be about anyone other than Wilde — Styles sounds positively smitten. Or better yet, love-stoned.

‘Andy Griffith Show’ star Maggie Peterson dead at 81

Beloved TV star Maggie Peterson, best known for her role on “The Andy Griffith Show,” has died at the age of 81.

Her niece, Amy Royer, confirmed the sad news in a statement on Facebook, revealing Peterson died in her sleep on Sunday afternoon.

Peterson endured poor health since the death of her husband of over 40 years, jazz musician Gus Mancuso, in December, the emotional post revealed.

“Maggie’s health took a turn for the worse after the death of her husband Gus and we are relieved that we were able to move her home to be close to family for her last days,” the statement said.

In a post on Instagram, The Andy Griffith Museum said Peterson “brought so much joy to her fans, and to our Mayberry Days Festival. We will miss you, Maggie.”

Peterson landed her breakthrough role as Charlene Darling on “The Andy Griffith Show” in 1963. She soon put her name on the map after starring in the comedy show until 1966.

Two years after leaving the show, Peterson was welcomed back on set where she starred as a different character, named Doris.

Fans were pleased to know it wasn’t the last of Charlene, as the actress returned to her initial role in the 1986 TV movie “Return to Mayberry,” where she was joined by her former co-stars.

Peterson went on to secure a recurring role on “The Bill Dana Show” in 1964, where she starred as Susie the waitress.

Maggie Peterson’s niece Amy Royer posted on Facebook that the actress’s health took a turn for the worse after her husband Gus died.

Later on, she landed minor roles in “Green Acres” and “The Odd Couple” in the late ’60s and early ’70s.

Her other acting credits include “Gomer Pyle: USMC,” “The Queen And I,” “Love American Style,” and “Mayberry RFD.”

Peterson met her husband Gus in 1968, before tying the knot in 1978.

Following her respective stints on the shows, Peterson decided to retire from acting in the ’80s, after her final acting role on a 1987 episode of “The Magical World of Disney.”

She took a job in location management where she eventually worked up the ranks, working as a location manager on several Las Vegas-based films, including “Casino,” “Mars Attacks!” and “Pay It Forward.”

Her family revealed on Facebook that they are “planning a private service for Maggie in the next few weeks.”
