Serial killer Mickey Mouse film trailer drops same day US copyright expires

Mickey Mouse isn’t just for kids anymore.

A trailer has dropped for a horror comedy film in which Mickey Mouse is the psycho killer – on the first day that the 1928 Disney short film “Steamboat Willie” has entered the public domain.

“Steamboat Willie” was directed by Walt Disney, and it’s an 8-minute short that was the first film to introduce the famous cartoon.

It was also considered groundbreaking at the time, for having synchronized sound.

“Steamboat Willie” entered the public domain on Jan. 1, 2024, and shortly after, a trailer dropped for the horror indie “Mickey’s Mouse Trap.”

The trailer features a sinister looking psycho in a Mickey Mouse costume, stalking people in an arcade.

The movie will follow a young woman on her 21st birthday who is doing a late shift at an amusement arcade – so, her friends surprise her. But a masked killer dressed as Mickey Mouse has his own game to play with them all.

The movie stars Sophie McIntosh, Callum Sywyk, Allegra Nocita, Ben Harris, Damir Kovic, Mackenzie Mills, Nick Biskupek and Simon Phillips.

Despite Disney trying to protect its characters, according to U.S. copyright law, works published between 1923 and 1978 are protected for 95 years following the date of publication.

Disney has tried to prevent this from happening, over the years — in 1998, it lobbied for the Copyright Extension Act, which added 20 years, adding up to 95 years. That act would eventually be dubbed the “Mickey Mouse Protection Act.”

“Ever since Mickey Mouse’s first appearance in the 1928 short film ‘Steamboat Willie,’ people have associated the character with Disney’s stories, experiences, and authentic products,” a Disney spokesperson said in a statement.

“That will not change when the copyright in the Steamboat Willie film expires. We will, of course, continue to protect our rights in the more modern versions of Mickey Mouse and other works that remain subject to copyright.”

“Mickey’s Mouse Trap” director Jamie Bailey told the Hollywood Reporter, “We just wanted to have fun with it all. I mean it’s ‘Steamboat Willie‘s’ Mickey Mouse murdering people. It’s ridiculous. We ran with it and had fun doing it and I think it shows.”

In the original cartoon short, Mickey Mouse gets into mischievous antics, such as fighting with a goat and playing animals like musical instruments, but it was a kid-friendly cartoon with no slasher movie action.

Bailey isn’t the only director to jump on Mickey Mouse’s new availability in the public domain – according to Variety, there’s another untitled horror movie in production directed by Steven LaMorte, also based on “Steamboat Willie,” in which a sadistic mouse will torment passengers on a ferry.

“Steamboat Willie has brought joy to generations, but beneath that cheerful exterior lies a potential for pure, unhinged terror,” LaMorte told the outlet. “It’s a project I’ve been dreaming of, and I can’t wait to unleash this twisted take on this beloved character to the world.”

“Mickey’s Mouse Trap” does not yet have an announced release date, but according to the outlet, it’s aiming for March.

Adam Driver shocks audience at film festival after critic calls ‘Ferrari’ crash scene ‘cheesy’: ‘F–k you’

Sometimes, it’s easier just to be blunt in the face of criticism.

An audience member at Poland’s Camerimage Film Festival told Adam Driver how he felt about the special effects for Driver’s upcoming film “Ferrari,” after the crowd was treated to a special screening followed by a Q&A with the actor on Sunday.

“What do you think about [the] crash scenes?” Driver was asked by the audience following the screening.

“They looked pretty harsh, drastic and, I must say, cheesy for me. What do you think?”

The 39-year-old actor did not hold back in his response to the criticism.

“F–k you. I don’t know? Next question,” the “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” star bluntly responded.

An audible gasp from the crowd filled the screening room from Driver’s nonchalant, profane response, followed by the sound of tense laughter from stunned audience members.

The Marine Corps veteran turned performer was honored with the Special EnergaCAMERIMAGE Award for an Actor during the festival.

The “Marriage Story” star also introduced “Ferrari” as an entry in the Camerimage Main Competition, according to Variety.

The audience member who viewed the film asked Driver what he thought of the crash scene after he believed it was “cheesy.”

Driver — also an executive producer for the film — plays the legendary Italian race car driver and entrepreneur Enzo Ferrari in director Michael Mann’s biographical drama.

Set during the summer of 1957 as the Ferrari company nears bankruptcy, it follows Enzo’s journey of competing in the iconic Mille Miglia, an open-road motorsport race stretching 1,000 miles across Italy’s treacherous terrain while struggling with the death of his son.

In the film’s first teaser, released in August, Driver looked unrecognizable as the 59-year-old Italian sports car entrepreneur, sporting slicked-back gray hair and sunglasses.

Italian film producer Andrea Iervolino told Top Gear the film resembled a James Bond movie.

“Adam Driver plays Enzo and he’s done an amazing job,” Iervolino said of the “House of Gucci” actor.

Penélope Cruz, Patrick Dempsey, Gabriel Leone, Sarah Gordon, and Jack O’Connell also star in the film, which Troy Kennedy Martin scripted.

The movie is based on Brock Yates’ 1991 biography “Enzo Ferrari: The Man, the Cars, the Races, the Machine.”

The four-time Emmy-nominated actor has been on a months-long press tour to promote “Ferrari.”

The film, which debuted at the Venice International Film Festival in August, received a six-minute standing ovation following the screening, according to Variety.

This isn’t the first time movie-goers have seen Driver in the racing world: he recently appeared at the 2023 Indy 500 and starred in the 2017 comedy “Logan Lucky,” set during the NASCAR Coca-Cola 600.

Though Driver’s response may seem harsh to some, many across social media who saw the video praised the two-time Academy Award nominee for letting the critic know how he felt.

“My man,” ‘Knives Out’ director Rian Johnson posted on X.

“This rules,” Barstool Sports podcaster Robbie Fox shared.

“Iconic. He really is Harrison Ford’s fake son,” Youtuber Kyle Katarn wrote.

“Normalize this response to stupid Q&A questions,” wrote X user @CinemaJoe.

‘Ferrari’ races into theaters on Christmas day.

Alison Brie’s husband Dave Franco directs her sex scenes: ‘This is our job’

Once Alison Brie and Dave Franco step foot on set, it’s strictly business.

The actress opened up about what it’s like having her husband direct her sex scenes with Jay Ellis in her new movie, “Somebody I Used to Know.”

While for many couples the prospect of seeing your partner get intimate with another person might be their idea of living hell, for Brie and Franco, it’s just another day at the office.

“I realize that it sounds wild, but we are actors, this is our job,” she told Jezebel. “It’s actually not that weird. And with something like this, because it’s our baby that we made together, I think our first priority is always just the movie.”

“Does the scene feel right and good? We don’t want my romantic scenes with [costar Jay Ellis] to play awkwardly or strangely in any way.”

The “Mad Men” star, 40, said she and her husband have “worked together enough now” to feel comfortable enough to go through steamy sex scenes in front of each other.

“The second movie that we did together ever, as actors, was Jeff Baena’s ‘The Little Hours,’ and in that movie, Dave has make-out or sex scenes with three other actors and me,” Brie explained. “So, I just feel like that was the ripping of the band-aid.”

In addition to 2017’s “The Little Hours,” the couple has also starred together in “The Disaster Artist,” “The Rental,” and most recently, “Horse Girl.”

The pair got engaged in August 2015 after Franco popped the all-important question with a rose-cut diamond sparkler by Irene Neuwirth. They secretly tied the knot in 2017.

Earlier this month, Brie opened up about the process she and Franco go through to get the best possible take in a scene.

Explaining the “hands-on” approach, Brie told The Hollywood Reporter that “Dave’s at the computer while I pace the room, bouncing off the walls and trying to make dinner.”

“Then I ask her what she would say in this scenario and she starts improvising and acting it out,” Franco, 37, chimed in, adding, “I write down every word that comes out of her mouth and we just kind of go back and forth in that way.”

The “How To Be Single” actress previously told People that she and Franco “usually do have some kind of conversation” before taking on a project that requires a sex scene “just to give the other person a heads-up.”

“You don’t want to blindside anyone, I think, with that information,” she told the outlet. “But at the same time, it’s a part of our job. It’s a strange part, and I can see how to the outside eye [it might come off].”

“We’re all professionals and when we’re in character, it’s its own thing,” she explained, adding, “It’s like we work in this strange job that just requires ultimate vulnerability at a moment’s notice. It’s just what we signed up for.”

Steven Spielberg says Tom Cruise’s ‘Top Gun’ sequel ‘saved Hollywood’s a–‘

From one legend to another.

Hollywood director Steven Spielberg wasted no time giving Tom Cruise his well-deserved flowers at the Academy Awards luncheon on Monday.

Pulling Cruise in for a hug, Spielberg told the 60-year-old actor that he “saved Hollywood’s a–” with his hit blockbuster “Top Gun: Maverick” — which scooped up a Best Picture nomination.

“You saved Hollywood’s a–, and you might have saved theatrical distribution,” Spielberg tells Cruise in the clip. “Seriously, ’Maverick’ might have saved the entire theatrical industry.”

The film, a sequel to Cruise’s 1986 classic, grossed an eye-watering $1.48 billion worldwide since its release in May last year. It also racked up an impressive 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The pair, who previously worked together on “Minority Report” and “War of the Worlds,” shared the sweet exchange at the star-studded event, during which Cruise debuted a striking new look.

Cruise’s film, which he didn’t want to make it. earned an impressive six Oscar nominations

Director Joseph Kosinski previously revealed he had just 30 minutes to convince Cruise to star in “Top Gun: Maverick.”

“Top Gun” Maverick” was Cruise’s first film to rake in $100 million opening weekend.

“So I read the script, I had some ideas, and Jerry [Bruckheimer] liked those ideas. He said, ‘You know what, you gotta go pitch this to Tom directly,’” Kosinski told Polygon. “We flew to Paris, where Tom was shooting ‘Mission: Impossible,’ we got about a half-hour of his time between setups.”

“And I basically had 30 minutes to pitch this film, which I didn’t realize when we were flying over. But when I got there, I found that Tom really didn’t want to make another ‘Top Gun,’” he explained.

“It’s one of those moments as a director, you have one on every film, where you’re on the spot to make a case for why this movie should be made. I had 30 minutes to do it.”

Three-time Oscar winner Spielberg, 76, is also celebrating awards season in style. He’s nominated for Best Director for his semi-autobiographical drama “The Fabelmans.”

The film has been showered with critical acclaim since its release late last year. It’s up for Best Picture, and Best Actress for Michelle Williams.
