Our neighbors keep on copying whatever we do

DEAR ABBY: My husband and I have been friends with another couple for many years. We would get together occasionally, and we mostly enjoyed their company. When the house across the street from ours became available, they bought it.

Not long after they moved in, the wife began copying our interior and exterior design elements and one night stood in our kitchen and said, “Well you know, everything’s a competition.” To say we were dismayed would be an understatement. My husband and I spent many years collecting vintage furniture and other items to create a distinctive home. It has been a labor of love.

Six months ago, we installed a unique garage door, unlike anything in the neighborhood. Abby, within three months she installed the exact same one! Are we wrong to find it crass and disrespectful?

We no longer want to spend time with them but don’t want to completely sever the connection because they are neighbors, and we also have some mutual friends. Moving is not an option; this is our home. What should we do? — FED UP IN OHIO

DEAR FED UP: I understand why you are frosted and need to distance yourself. Who wants to be close to someone who considers “everything” to be a competition? Perhaps it will lessen your frustration to remember that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, while you learn to accept things you cannot change. Of course it is in your best interest to keep things cordial, but it might be better if you no longer invite this woman into your home.

DEAR ABBY: I lost my beautiful mother six years ago. While, of course, I miss her terribly, something else has been bothering me that I’m having trouble getting over. I allowed my cousin on my dad’s side of the family to come to the hospital to see me and pay her respects, which didn’t bother me. It’s what occurred next that I have the big issue with.

When my cousin left the hospital, she jumped straight on Facebook and posted for everyone to see “RIP, Aunt Sally.” Everyone who was friends with Mom saw the post, which meant she announced my mom’s passing before I had even had time to process it all. I was extremely hurt, angry, sad and shocked that she would do that.

It still bothers me as it’s not something that can be undone. I was still lying beside my mom crying and trying to say goodbye to her when my phone started blowing up with messages and notifications. How can I get past the betrayal I feel? I have had very little contact with that cousin since. — HURT IN FLORIDA

DEAR HURT: Please accept my sympathy for the loss of your mother. In this internet age, it’s not unusual for people to post their feelings online. Your cousin may have been venting rather than intending to make a formal announcement of your mother’s passing. The problem with posting is that once it’s on there, it is out there for everyone to see and react to.

I do think this is something you should discuss with your cousin, who may not have realized how her online sentiments affected you on that sad and stressful day. You deserve an apology for her insensitivity.

Billie Lourd feels mom Carrie Fisher’s ‘presence’ 7 years after death

May the force always be with Billie Lourd.

The “Scream Queens” star, 31, penned a heartfelt tribute to her mother, the late Carrie Fisher, on the seventh anniversary of her death.

Fisher and her mother, actress Debbie Reynolds, both died within a day of each other in late December 2016.

Lourd posted a throwback photo of herself and the “Star Wars” actress playing on the beach via social media.

“Every anniversary brings a different iteration of my grief. Some infuse me with rage, some make me cry all day long, some make me feel dissociated and empty,” she wrote on Wednesday.

The “American Horror Story” alum added that some anniversaries make her “feel nothing” and “some make me feel guilty for feeling nothing.”

This year, Lourd noted that she woke up feeling “grateful — or griefull — if you will.”

“Grief has infused my life with a sense of appreciation I had never had before. It makes me soak up every moment of joy as if it were my last,” she wrote.

She further described how her “eyes welled up with tears of joy” when she held her daughter, Jackson, on Wednesday.

“I laughed at myself then cried more cause I was laughing. I felt my mom’s presence like the warmth of the sun on your skin on a hot summer day,” she continued.

“The kind of warmth where you unknowingly close your eyes and take a slow breath through your nose and grin,” Lourd added.

The “Booksmart” actress scribed that she “missed [her mom] every day, but the cliche is also true.”

“She is with me every day, she infuses my joyful moments with even more joy,” Lourd penned.

“As I tell my son, she lives in the stars — and she damn sure makes my life sparkle,” she concluded. “Sending my love to all my griefers out there. And hoping everyone can feel a little sparkle of griefull among all the feelings grief inevitably brings.”

Lourd also shares son Kingston, 3, with husband Austin Rydell.

Fisher died at the age of 60 on Dec. 27, 2016, after suffering a massive heart attack aboard a plane.

The “Singin’ in the Rain” icon passed away the next day from a stroke.

Earlier this year, Lourd honored her late mom when she was posthumously awarded with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

She donned a maxi dress that was painted with an image of Princess Leia, Fisher’s character from the famed “Star Wars” franchise.

No gun, cellphone found in car where Savanah Soto was found dead with boyfriend

The family of Savanah Nicole Soto’s boyfriend does not believe he killed the pregnant Texas teen who went missing on the day she was supposed to be induced – as it was revealed that no firearms or cellphones were discovered in the car where cops found the couple’s bullet-riddled bodies.

Gabriel Guerra, whose son Matthew Guerra, 22, was found dead alongside his girlfriend Soto, 18, outside of a San Antonio apartment complex, insisted that his child was not responsible for the couple’s deaths.

“They were inseparable. Was it a perfect relationship? No, but she definitely was not a prisoner there,” he told KENS5. .

Guerra’s father and stepmother described how the couple was looking forward to the arrival of baby Fabian.

“We still can’t believe we’re just never going to meet him,” Guerra’s stepmother, Raquel Guerra, told Fox San Antonio.

Meanwhile, his father, Gabriel, pointed out presents under a Christmas tree.

“Those are Savanah’s and Matthew’s and baby Fabian’s,” he told the outlet.

“We had to remind him at the baby shower to let Savanah open some of the gifts. He was opening all the gifts. They were both definitely happy and excited,” Gabriel said.

Savanah Nicole Soto,18, and her boyfriend, Matthew Guerra, 22, died from gunshot wounds, police revealed. TikTok

Soto’s brother, Jordan Corona, told CBS News that police told him that both the pregnant teen and her boyfriend were shot in the back of the head.

Soto had been in the front passenger seat with a child carrier on her lap and her boyfriend in the back, sources familiar with the probe told News 4 San Antonio.

Police did not find a firearm or Guerra’s cellphone inside the Kia sedan where the couple was found Tuesday.

Guerra’s family described their efforts in trying to locate the missing couple on Saturday, the day Soto was expected to be induced.

“Once it was, like, the 2:30 p.m. mark, we started panicking,” Gabriel told the outlet. “I started calling. I’m calling, racing home, racing over there, calling police.”

Gabriel and Raquel Guerra don’t believe their dead son killed his girlfriend, Savanah Nicole Soto. FOX San Antonio

He said he raced to his son’s apartment, where he kicked in the door and found a lit candle and the diaper bag that Soto planned to take with her to the appointment.

“That’s when I saw Savanah’s overnight bag for the hospital that she didn’t take with her and that even threw me more in a panic,” Gabriel told Fox San Antonio.

He said he asked Leon Valley police whether authorities could request his son’s location data information, but that a detective told him it was unlikely a judge would grant the request because the situation lacked exigent circumstances.

“(The detective) basically said, ‘They’re adults and if they want to disappear, they can disappear,” he told News 4. “And, again, I reminded them, the baby is overdue, has been overdue — they missed the due date.

The couple were both found dead in a car, Soto’s sister-in-law said. WOAI

“And to me that’s a life-threatening … I mean, there should have been more urgency,” he added.

The detective told the outlet that he had been instructed by the police chief to direct questions to the San Antonio Police Department, which did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for a comment.

“I just hope we can get to the bottom of this,” Raquel told News 4. “And justice be served, because I just can’t fathom how anybody could do that  to a pregnant woman/ I just can’t get that out of my head.”

Gabriel said he knows Guerra was arrested in 2022 for domestic abuse against Savanah — and even suggested that the boyfriend stay in custody longer.

“They had contacted each other on the phone and that was a violation, so they can please keep him in there and unfortunately it would have to be Savanah to say that, and she wouldn’t do it, so he was let out,” he told the outlet, adding that domestic abuse charges were never filed again.

Guerra was reportedly on probation for assaulting Soto on Christmas Day last year.

Gabriel said his son had a criminal history that included unlawful carry of a weapon, evading police and an assault charge causing bodily injury.

Savanah Soto was set to be induced the day she vanished. TikTok

In June, a judge granted Guerra probation for the family violence case, and permitted him to have contact with Soto as long as it was not  “harmful or injurious,” according court documents cited by News 4.

The probation was set to expire in June 2024, but a judge extended it to February 2025 after Guerra picked up additional, unrelated charges including unlawful carrying of a weapon, evading arrest in a vehicle, and reckless driving, according to the paper.

“He didn’t hang around the best crowd,” Gabriel said, but added that he believed the young man was going to change when he became a dad himself.

Soto (left) was excited to become a mom, her family said. Gloria Cordova / Facebook

“He talked about how it was going to make him better, a better person,” Gabriel told KENS5.

Meanwhile, Soto’s mother, Gloria Cordova, also said she is seeking answers about the mysterious deaths.

“Why was she in the front and he was in the back? Obviously, that says someone else was there,” she asked, adding that she suspects Guerra was involved in illegal activity, according to the outlet.

“I think it had something to do with him and things that he was doing, not my daughter,” Cordova told CBS News.

“My daughter just was there with him and they didn’t want … they didn’t want someone to say what happened, somebody that’s going to say it’s so-and-so or this is what he looked like. She just was there at the wrong time,” she added.

“He used to abuse her and I told her to get out of the relationship, but she — she was hard-headed, she wouldn’t listen. But I think this time she was going to leave him already. That’s what I’m hearing,” Cordova told the outlet.

“They took an innocent, an innocent girl that was going to be a mommy, they just took her life for nothing,” Cordova told KENS5.

Two-time ‘Survivor’ contestant Keith Nale dead at 62

Two-time “Survivor” contestant Keith Nale has died at age 62, his family has confirmed.

Nale’s heartbroken son, Wes Nale, told Entertainment Tonight his father died Tuesday afternoon.

“He’d been battling cancer for the past few months and we found out about it in January,” he added.

His brother, Kevin Nale added that their dad’s life was “taken way too soon.”

Keith, who hailed from Louisiana, was a contestant in two seasons of “Survivor” in 2015.

He appeared on two versions of the show, including “Survivor: San Juan del Sur” and “Survivor: Cambodia” both of which aired that year.

Wes appeared on “Survivor: San Juan del Sur” alongside his dad.

Tributes poured in following the sad news of Keith’s death, with his former “Survivor: San Juan del Sur” co-star Kelley Wentworth tweeting, “Keith – a man with the purest heart, who brought humor into moments where it was needed most.

Keith was ultimately sent home a second time when Wentworth won immunity, but spoke highly of the series following his exit.

Speaking to UpRoxx in 2014, the former firefighter opened up about what it was like to compete in his 50s.

“They were impressed, being I was 53,” he said of his firefighter pals. “Now granted that’s not 93, but that’s not 23 either.”

“They were all behind me, a great bunch of guys. They wanted me to win it and, you know, bring it home to Louisiana. But that just didn’t happen.”

Alex Murdaugh and family linked to 3 more mysterious deaths

Convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh started his life in prison for killing his wife and son on Friday, but mystery and scandal continues to swirl around the remains of his family, a prominent legal dynasty who had a lot of influence in the area.

Less than 24 hours after he was convicted on two counts of murder, Murdaugh, 54, appeared for sentencing at Colleton County Courthouse in South Carolina on Friday, cuffed and wearing a dark khaki prison jumpsuit – a stark image of how far he had fallen from his high-flying life.

“Everyone knows [the Murdaughs], and in addition to that, they had a lot of influence here,” former friend John Wright said of the family, which had reigned over the Low Country’s legal system for over a century.

“I thought the jury might be more reticent or fearful about convicting [Alex].”

Although Murdaugh insisted before the sentencing he would “never” hurt his family, he was nonetheless handed two consecutive life terms for gunning down Maggie, 52, and Paul, 22, at the family’s estate on June 7, 2021.

The conclusion of Murdaugh’s trial, however, still leaves several questions about three other suspicious deaths linked to the disgraced scion and his relatives– as well as the moneyed family’s own future.

Stephen Smith

Stephen Smith, 19, was found dead in the early hours of July 8, 2015 on Sandy Run Road outside Hampton County, not far from the 1,700-acre Moselle estate where Maggie and Paul and Maggie and Paul were later gunned down.

The nursing student was supposedly walking home from a night class at Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College after his car ran out of gas on Highway 601, Bluffton Today reported.

Smith’s death certificate listed his cause of death as blunt force trauma, and his arm had also been dislocated and bent behind his body. Police initially attributed the injuries to a hit-and-run accident involving the side-view mirror of a semi truck, the local paper said.

The teen’s family, however, never accepted the accident explanation. According to ABC4, interviews with witnesses unearthed unfounded rumors of a relationship between Smith, who was openly gay, and Alex Murdaugh’s oldest son, Buster.

Some of the witnesses also speculated Buster, who testified in his father’s defense last month, could have been involved in Smith’s death, although no link has ever been publicly disclosed by law enforcement.

In June 2021, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) reopened a probe into Smith’s death based on information gleaned during the initial inquiry into the shooting deaths of Maggie and Paul earlier that month.

Speaking after Murdaugh’s conviction, Stephen’s mother Sandy told The Post: “That jury done excellent. They seen through the lies and a Murdaugh is finally brought down.

“Now that this case is back over they can get on Stephen’s case full time.”

As of March 2023, the investigation into Smith’s death remains ongoing.

Witnesses speculated that Buster Murdaugh may have been involved in Smith’s death.

Gloria Satterfield

The Murdaughs’ longtime housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield spent three weeks in a coma following an alleged “trip and fall” incident at the family’s home. She died at the hospital on Feb. 8, 2018.

Gloria Satterfield died on Feb. 8, 2018.

Alex Murdaugh claimed the family dogs caused Satterfield, 57, to trip, but her death was not reported to the coroner and an autopsy was not initially performed.

SLED opened a criminal investigation into Satterfield’s death in Sept. 2021, shortly after police busted Murdaugh’s bizarre plot to be fatally shot by his drug dealer in order to secure a $10 million life insurance payout for Buster.

On the same day SLED announced the new probe, Satterfield’s two sons filed a lawsuit claiming that Murdaugh never forked over the liability insurance money he promised after their mother’s death.

The grieving family recovered $4.3 million in stolen funds in October 2021. Satterfield’s son, Michael, later testified against Murdaugh at his trial.

In June 2022, SLED announced plans to exhume Satterfield’s body.

Mallory Beach

At the time of his murder, Paul Murdaugh was facing three felony charges – two of boating under the influence and one of causing death and bodily injury – for the river-based accident which killed Mallory Beach.

According to official reports and accounts from surviving passengers, Paul drunkenly drove his power boat into a piling of the Archers Creek Bridge around 2:20 a.m. on Feb. 23, 2019.

Mallory Beach was killed in a boating accident in Feb. 2019.

Beach, 19, was ejected from the boat into dark water. Her body was found one week later.

Paul was later found to have a blood-alcohol content three times the legal limit, CBS reported. Alex Murdaugh, who met his son and the other survivors at the hospital, was allegedly overheard at one point saying “[Mallory’s] gone. Don’t worry.”

By the time Maggie and Paul were killed in June 2021, the family was also facing a wrongful death suit filed by Beach’s family.

In bodycam footage from the scene of the Murdaugh killings, a strangely composed Alex Murdaugh can even be heard telling the responding officers he felt Maggie and Paul’s murder was linked to the fatal crash.

SOUTH CAROLINA LAW ENFORCEMENT DIVISION

Almost two years later, Murdaugh repeated this theory on the stand.

“I did then believe [they were killed] because of the boat wreck and I do now,” he told prosecutor Creighton Waters last month.

An uncertain future

Now that Alex Murdaugh will officially spend the rest of his life behind bars, it remains to be seen what will happen to the remaining Murdaugh relatives as they try to return to life in the Low Country area they once ruled.

Investigators found ample evidence of underage drinking on the boat after the crash.
SOUTH CAROLINA LAW ENFORCEMENT DIVISION

Murdaugh’s surviving son, Buster, faces an especially lonely road after losing all of his immediate family members within two years.

“Buster held up pretty well until the cameras were off him — but then he collapsed,” a source told The Post of the 26-year-old’s reaction to the guilty verdict.

“He was crying uncontrollably. The uncles [Alex’s brothers, John Marvin Murdaugh and Randy Murdaugh] finally got him into a car.”

Jansen Panettiere’s cause of death revealed

Actor Jansen Panettiere died of an enlarged heart last month at the age of 28, his family announced Monday.

The younger brother of “Scream” actress Hayden Panettiere died Feb. 19 at his home in Nyack, NY.

“Jansen’s heart could be seen in his eyes, and his charm in his brilliant, engaging smile; his soul in his masterful and revealing paintings, and the joy of life in his dry wit,” said his family in a statement to ABC News. “His charisma, warmth, compassion for others, and his creative spirit will live forever in our hearts and in the hearts of all whom he encountered.”

The family added, “Though it offers little solace, the Medical Examiner reported Jansen’s sudden passing was due to cardiomegaly (enlarged heart), coupled with aortic valve complications.”

Panettiere was found by a friend unresponsive and sitting upright in a chair, according to the police report obtained by The Post from the Orangetown Police Department. The friend called 911 and performed CPR on him.

The actor’s pals became concerned after Panettiere missed a business meeting earlier in the day, according to the report.

When EMTs arrived around 5 p.m., they found Panettiere lying on his back on the floor of his living room, not breathing and “cold to the touch,” according to the report. He was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

His father, Alan Panettiere, told police he had spoken with his son the prior evening, and he “sounded okay.”

The medical examiner declined The Post’s request for confirmation of the family’s announcement. However, police confirmed there were “no obvious signs of trauma observed.”

Panettiere was an actor in his own right who boasted a lengthy Hollywood resume. He voiced many 2000s hits, like “Ice Age: The Meltdown,” “Blue’s Clues,” and “Robots.” He also appeared on one episode of “The Walking Dead” in 2019.

Jansen and his older sister, Hayden, 33, worked alongside each other on the Disney Channel original movie “Tiger Cruise” in 2004 and the family comedy “Racing Stripes” in 2005.

He was also the voice of Truman X in Nickelodeon’s “The X’s,” an animated television series that aired from 2005 to 2006.

On his Instagram page, which is still public, Panettiere often shared photos of his artwork, which featured colorful, abstract prints. He also painted other items, such as shoes and jackets.

In an Instagram post from Jan. 24, he showed a picture of his older sister trying to give him a haircut with a slight smile on his face.

“Not the first haircut she’s tried to give me,” he wrote in the caption.

Hayden has faced her own struggles. Her ex, Wladimir Klitschko, obtained full custody of their daughter, Kaya, now 8. Panettiere said she made the decision to relinquish custody as she struggled with an alcohol and drug addiction.

“It was the hardest thing I could do,” Hayden told People last year. “But the best thing for my daughter was to make sure she was okay, take care of myself and make sure I could be a good mom to her. And sometimes that means letting go.”

She told the outlet she was offered “happy pills” before walking red carpets when she was just 15 years old, and throughout her career, she continued to drink heavily and occasionally take opioids.

She checked into rehab for eight months after giving birth to Kaya. Panettiere revealed she also sought treatment for postpartum depression.

In 2018, the “Nashville” star started dating Brian Hickerson, who was sentenced to 45 days in jail in 2021 for two felony counts of domestic violence.

The pair got into a public brawl at the Sunset Marquis in LA in March 2022. Months later, Hickerson confirmed they had split — but they were spotted traveling together in November.

Timothy Gritman impersonated dead dad amid pension ripoff

He was “dad” on arrival.

A Pennsylvania man was so intent on stealing his dead dad’s pension and Social Security payments that he even used make-up to “whiten his hair and eyebrows” to impersonate his elderly father to skeptical authorities.

The grifter, Timothy Gritman, 55, stole $204,985 in NY state pension and Social Security funds paid out to his dad, Ralph, from October 2017 to October 2022, State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli said.

Ralph Gritman, 79, of Freeport, LI, retired from the Nassau County Clerk’s Office in 1992 and moved with his wife, Naomi, to a retirement community in Pennsylvania approximately three years later, DiNapoli said.

After Naomi died in 2010, Ralph was unable to keep up with his home and moved in with his son in 2014, the comptroller’s office said.

Father and son pulled up stakes and moved to Wyoming in Aug. 2017, DiNapoli said.

The elder Gritman went to a hospital emergency room in Wyoming a month later, Medicare records showed. That was the last time his Medicare benefits were ever used, the comptroller said.

The father was “in poor health in 2016 when he was last seen alive by relatives” at his son’s Pennsylvania residence, authorities said.

In 2019, Timothy Gritman told a family member that his father had died several years earlier, but would not say where he was buried or what had happened to his body, DiNapoli said.

A call to DiNapoli’s fraud hotline sparked a joint investigation that included the FBI and Pennsylvania authorities and led to the suspension of Ralph Gritman’s pension payments, the comptroller said. But his shady son continued to claim his father was alive and requested the pension payments be resumed.

When DiNapoli’s office asked to speak with Ralph Gritman, his son would either claim the older man was asleep or would try to imitate his dad’s voice, authorities alleged.

So the comptroller’s office asked for photographic evidence of his father holding a current ID card.

The scheming son then sent investigators a picture of himself, in which he tried to disguise himself as his dad by “appearing to use make-up to whiten his hair and eyebrows” and, holding a “bogus” Pennsylvania State identification card, DiNapoli and FBI officials said.

Timothy Gritman was arrested on Feb. 14 and pleaded guilty in US District Court, Philadelphia, to wire fraud and Social Security fraud, according to the state comptroller’s office. He faces a maximum of 285 years in prison, a three-year period of supervised release, and $3.7 million in fines at sentencing on May 31.

Ralph Gritman’s body has still not been found. He is believed to have died of natural causes, authorities said.

Timothy Gritman tried to impersonate his dead dad by “appearing to use make-up to whiten his hair and eyebrows and holding a “bogus,” according to authorities.

The seedy swindle got off the ground because father and son shared a joint bank account where the elder Gritman’s retirement benefits were electronically deposited, DiNapoli noted.

“To date, R.G.’s body has not been located and defendant Gritman has refused to admit to family members or law enforcement where R.G. is buried,” reads the scammer’s guilty plea memorandum.

“Needless to say, defrauding the government is a criminally bad idea and the FBI and our partners will continue to pursue anyone bold enough, and foolish enough, to do so,” said Jacqueline Maguire, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Philadelphia Division.

“My office will continue to hold anyone who seeks to defraud the pension system accountable no matter who or where they are,” DiNapoli said.

Timothy did not return a message seeking comment.
