GTA 6 Trailer Coming This Tuesday, Rockstar Games Confirms

Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer release date is finally upon us, as confirmed by Rockstar Games via a tweet. The first footage from the highly-anticipated crime odyssey sequel will be out on Tuesday, December 5, at 7:30pm IST in India/ 9am ET in the US, with the publisher only posting an image of a sunset and palm tree silhouettes — confirming previous claims that it’s set in a fictionalised version of Miami, which franchise veterans might recognise as a return to Vice City. With that, it is clear that Geoff Keighley won’t be presenting the trailer at The Game Awards 2023, though a teaser or some screenshot drops are always possible.

Not much was known about GTA 6 since a massive data leak from mid-2022, which revealed in-development gameplay of our lead crime couple — allegedly Jason and Lucia — robbing a diner in broad daylight. Yep, this would mark the first female protagonist in the franchise’s controversial history, which has, for the most part, portrayed women as sex objects or nagging moms/wives. It is also worth mentioning that Rockstar hasn’t revealed an official title for the game yet, merely referring to it as the ‘next Grand Theft Auto,’ so it could very well be a spin-off with some outlandish subtitle. The sequel has been a long time coming, with a May earnings call at Rockstar parent Take-Two Interactive hinting that the GTA 6 launch window could be set for the fiscal year 2025 (opens in April 2024 in Rockstar’s case).

Earlier this month, the studio also scrapped the ‘Social Club’ branding from the website, referring to its online multiplayer service as ‘Rockstar Games platform,’ in addition to getting rid of the yellow block in its logo — hinting at some big changes to usher in the new era. At the time of writing, the studio has deleted all previous posts from its Instagram account, maintaining only the aforementioned trailer release date banner. As anticipation for GTA 6 grew, GTA Online served as the decade-long cash cow for Rockstar, delivering near-endless multiplayer content that easily rivalled the average AAA live service game. For now, it’s unclear whether the existing Social Club members will simply be updated to cater to the new entry or if players will be forced to migrate their data to a new account.

As of October, the 2013-released Grand Theft Auto V has sold 190 million copies worldwide, with minor graphical and performance upgrades to adjust to two whole console generations. Just yesterday, Rockstar confirmed that its remastered Grand Theft Auto trilogy will be available to play on Netflix from December 14 onwards — accessible to subscribers of all tiers and playable exclusively on Android, iOS, and the Netflix phone app.

Grand Theft Auto 6 will probably release on the current-gen PS5 and Xbox Series S/X first, before heading to PC — as seen with previous Rockstar entries.

Xbox Game Pass December 2023: Far Cry 6, Remnant I and II, and More

Xbox Game Pass is adding 12 new titles to its December catalogue, including two day-one releases. The standout here has to be the Remnant franchise — both From the Ashes and its newly launched sequel Remnant II, celebrated for its souls-like shooter experience that pits players against tough-as-nails fantastical monsters, across procedurally-generated levels. Its challenges can also be tackled in co-op, so it’s best advised that you check out the sequel because it will have a larger active player base. Another major addition this month is Far Cry 6, setting you against the vibrant tropical island of Yara to topple its ruthless dictator Antón Castillo (Giancarlo Esposito), who is hellbent on using the Viviro, an unstable form of cancer treatment, to restore his land to former glory. It arrives December 14 on Xbox Game Pass.

The December lineup feels too good to be true, but makes sense given the Christmas season, as a means for Xbox to get more people to subscribe to Game Pass. Rise of the Tomb Raider is another major entry, putting you in the shoes of lone adventurer Lara Croft, who is thrust into a sprawling mystery surrounding The Order of Trinity looking to acquire ancient artefacts that would grant them the power to change the fate of humanity. Taking players to the Lost City of Kitezh in Siberia, this is the second story in a three-part reboot trilogy from Crystal Dynamics, borrowing a range of mechanics from Naughty Dogs Uncharted games in terms of ammo pick-up and a robust close-quarters combat system. Rise of the Tomb Raider will be out December 5 across PC, console, and the cloud.

Let your creativity run wild as you construct a mining town punctuated by cutesy little roads and settlements, with enough power water, and resources to ensure your steampunk civilians are well-equipped to excavate long-lost space technology — the kind that might help save the barren, dying planet. SteamWorld Build is a day-one launch on Xbox Game Pass and is now available to download for free on PC and console. Experience the life of a village blacksmith in While the Iron’s Hot, a pixelated RPG set on the enigmatic island of Ellian, which drew countless craftsmen together in order to perfect their craft. Explore every tunnel, forge new machinery to get past puzzles, and interact with its colourful cast to unveil the mystery surrounding a recent disaster. The game is now available on cloud, console, and PC.

Or you could engage in some co-op zombie-killing action in World War Z: Aftermath, as thousands of undead hordes leap across rooftops to deliver high-tension challenges, as you stock up on ammunition and makeshift weapons to blast skulls, all the while being granted the responsibility of escorting civilians to safety. While it is based on the Brad Pitt-led Paramount Pictures film, the game was well-received at launch and promises to be a jolly good time when it comes to Game Pass on December 5. After all that gory beatdown, one might need to relax a little. So why not turn into an annoying farm animal, and wreak havoc on a sandbox town in Goat Simulator 3, as you headbutt, lick, and triple-jump your way through?

December 1 (now available)

Remnant: From the Ashes — PC, cloud, and console

Remnant II — PC, cloud, and Xbox Series S/X

Spirit of the North — PC, cloud, and console

SteamWorld Build — PC, cloud, and console

December 5

Clone Drone in the Danger Zone — PC, cloud, and console

Rise of the Tomb Raider — PC, cloud, and console

While the Iron’s Hot — PC, cloud, and console

World War Z: Aftermath — PC, cloud, and console

December 7

Goat Simulator 3 — PC, cloud, and Xbox Series S/X

December 8

Against the Storm — PC

December 12

Tin Hearts — PC, cloud, and console

December 14

Far Cry 6 — PC, cloud, and console

Additionally, Microsoft has confirmed some titles to be leaving the service. On December 15, you can say goodbye to Chained Echoes, Opus Magnum, Potion Craft: Alchemist Simulator, and Rubber Bandits.

And as usual, before they disappear from the service, you can choose to buy them at a 20 percent discount.

Apple Plans to Equip All iPhone 16 Models With Revamped Action Button: Report

iPhone 16 — expected to debut in the second half of 2024 as the successor to the iPhone 15 series of smartphones — could be equipped with Apple’s new Action Button. While the company equipped the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max with the new button designed to replace mute switch, a new report states that the company is planning on equipping all four models in the lineup with the customisable button, which is expected to arrive in a revamped form.

MacRumors reports that Apple will include the Action Button on all iPhone 16 models that are likely to arrive next year. Unlike the iPhone 15 lineup, the non-Pro iPhone 16 models are also expected to feature the new Action Button. It is also suggested that the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus might be the last iPhone models to debut with the mute switch — even the iPhone SE 4 is tipped to debut in 2025 with the new button.

Meanwhile, the report states that the Action Button on the iPhone 16 series will be revamped next year. Instead of using the regular mechanical button like the volume and power keys, the new Action Button will offer capacitive-style button functionality like the iPhone SE (2022) home button. It is unclear whether all models in the series will be equipped with the redesigned button — codenamed Atlas.

When Apple unveiled the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max this year, the firm touted the new functionality offered by the Action Button that expands the use of the button that was used to switch between vibrate and ring modes on the iPhone.

With the action button, you can toggle ringer modes or accessibility features, launch the camera app or magnifier app, start or stop a voice memo or the flashlight, and enable and disable focus modes on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The switch to a capacitive button means that it might be able to detect different pressure levels. However, enthusiasts will have to wait for several months before Apple unveils the purported iPhone 16 series of smartphones in 2024.

Google Chrome Update Fixes High-Severity Zero-Day Vulnerability That Was Actively Exploited

Google is rolling out a security patch for its Chrome web browser that fixes a security flaw that could allow a malicious user to run dangerous code on a user’s computer. The update is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux computers and users should install the latest version in order to remain protected from the zero-day vulnerability — the sixth one to be patched by Google this year. The company is expected to provide more information once the update has been rolled out to several users.

Spotted by Android Central, the update to Google Chrome 119.0.6045.199 for macOS and Linux began rolling out to users earlier this week, alongside version 119.0.6045.200 for Windows computers with a fix for a zero-day vulnerability in tow. These are flaws that were previously unknown to the developers of the software, making them a target for malicious users.

With the latest Google Chrome update, the company has patched the security bug tracked by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as CVE-2023-6345. While the company hasn’t revealed a great deal of information related to the security flaw, the firm says it knows that “an exploit for CVE-2023-6345 exists in the wild” in its release notes for the latest update. Users should enable automatic updates for Chrome or manually update to the latest versions in order to get the latest fixes.

Meanwhile, the entry for the vulnerability on the NIST website has been assigned a “High” severity level. The description states that it is related to the open source Skia library that is used in Google Chrome. An attacker could use a malicious file to compromise the renderer process and escape the sandbox — a system designed to separate the browser and the system, to keep the latter protected.

The company credits Benoît Sevens and Clément Lecigne from its Threat Analysis Group (TAG) with discovering the vulnerability that was found on November 24 and swiftly patched by the company. At the moment, it is unclear whether other browsers and applications that are also based on Google’s open-source Chromium browser project are also affected by the flaw, or when they will receive updates with security patches.

UN to Educate Over 22,000 Staff Members on Blockchain, Web3: Here’s Why

The United Nations seems to be getting ready to hop onboard the Web3-express now that rules and regulations to govern this niche sector have begun surfacing around the world. Aiming to help countries around the world achieve their sustainable development goals, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has decided to launch a blockchain academy next year in 2024. Through this initiative, the UNDP is also looking to train 22,000 staff members in blockchain and Web3 technologies.

The UNDP is a branch of the UN that is focussed on helping poverty-ridden parts of the world with strong policies, skills, partnerships, and institutions. The organisation now wishes to train its staff members across 170 nations on how blockchain could be used to finetune digital identity applications and real-world asset tokenisation alongside bringing transparency in supply chain and increasing financial inclusion.

To do so, the UNDP has partnered with the Algorand Foundation, a non-profit body that supports the eco-friendly green blockchain Algorand.

“The Algorand Blockchain Academy will be instrumental in equipping our team with the tools needed to address complex global challenges using blockchain technology,” said Robert Pasicko, UNDP’s expert for alternative finance and low carbon development, while commenting on the development.

Pasicko made this announcement at the Algorand Impact Summit in New Delhi on November 30.

This programme will bring recorded lectures, interactive workshops, and hands-on assignments around blockchain and Web3 to UNDP’s staff members.

“We see this education and tooling initiative as a critical first step toward identifying and delivering actionable, on-the-ground use-cases of blockchain to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals in a number of areas,” said Doro Unger-Lee, head of education and inclusion at Algorand Foundation.

The initiative will enter its beta mode somewhere between January and March 2024 after which it will gradually expand. It is notable that the UNDP is taking a step like this now, when several nations around the world are ready to embrace the Web3 sector but within rules and regulations.

In Europe, for instance, the MiCA framework got its approval in October this year. First proposed in September 2020, the MiCA rules largely revolves around consumer protection as well as prevention of market manipulation and financial crimes in the crypto sector.

While Dubai and Abu Dhabi have tailored their own crypto laws, members of the G20 are also now deploying the crypto roadmap that was recently finalised under India’s presidency.

These crypto laws are broadly to make the industry safe for people to explore and become a part of. Afterall, it is estimated that Web3 will create thousands of jobs worldwide as the sector continues to expand.

Threads Expands Keyword Search Feature to Users Globally in All Languages

Threads, the microblogging platform from Instagram, is now expanding its keyword search feature. The feature was previously available in select regions but will now be offered to all users, according to information shared by the platform’s head. This, however, is different from the tags feature that the company is currently in testing in Australia which is said to help find posts related to a specific interest or theme and is similar to the hashtag feature on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Instagram Head Adam Mosseri on Thursday confirmed that the keyword search feature is now expanding and will be available to all Threads users and in all languages. The feature was initially tested in some English-speaking countries and then rolled out to more English and Spanish-speaking countries.

Mosseri added that the search action will get more improvements soon but did not share details of what features would be added. Responding to a user’s query about support for viewing search results in chronological order on Threads, Mosseri said that it would “create a substantial safety loophole”.

The keyword search feature is expected to be the stepping stone for Threads to add support for trending topics — a feature that is available on the platform’s rival X. The inclusion of post counts while adding interactive tags to posts hints at the arrival of support for trending topics.

Last month, Threads also rolled out the ability to delete profiles without deleting the linked Instagram account. This functionality was not available when the microblogging platform was launched in July — users could only temporarily disable their Threads profile in the past, as the company had revealed that the profile was closely tied to the original Instagram account.
