Realme GT 5 Pro Design Revealed; Teased to Offer 4,500 Nits Peak Brightness

Realme started teasing the arrival of Realme GT 5 Pro last week, and we’ve now finally got a good look at the smartphone. The design is similar to the Realme 11 series with a hole punch display design and a circular-shaped camera module. The flagship smartphone is teased to come with a curved AMOLED display with a peak brightness of 4,500 nits. The Realme GT 5 Pro is confirmed to go official in China on December 7. It will run on the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, coupled with 1TB of onboard storage and pack a 5,400mAh battery with support for 100W fast charging.

The Chinese smartphone brand posted images on Weibo, showing the back and front of the Realme GT 5 Pro. The images show the handset in an orange shade with thin bezels and a hole-punch display. A circular-shaped camera module is seen arranged on the rear, resembling the design language of the Realme 11 series. The power button and volume keys are seen on the right edge.

Realme notes that the upcoming flagship will have a curved Pro-XDR AMOLED 8T LTPO (Low-temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) screen with a peak manual brightness of 1,000 nits, a peak global brightness of 1,600 nits, and a peak brightness of 4,500 nits. Further, the screen is rated to deliver 1.5K resolution, 144Hz refresh rate, and 2,160Hz instant touch sampling rate. The Realme GT 5 Pro is said to have TUV Rhineland global eye protection 3.0 certification as well.

The Realme GT 5 Pro is teased to be backed by a 5,400mAh battery with support for 100W fast charging and 50W wireless charging. The battery is claimed to provide up to 406 hours of standby time on a single charge, whereas the fast charging technology is said to fill the battery from zero to 50 percent in just 12 minutes. The handset will run on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC and feature LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 storage. It will include a 50-megapixel 1/1.56 Sony IMX890 sensor with optical image stabilisation (OIS) and electronic image stabilisation (EIS) support.

The Realme GT 5 Pro will launch in China on December 7 at 2pm local time (11:30am IST).

Threads Expands Keyword Search Feature to Users Globally in All Languages

Threads, the microblogging platform from Instagram, is now expanding its keyword search feature. The feature was previously available in select regions but will now be offered to all users, according to information shared by the platform’s head. This, however, is different from the tags feature that the company is currently in testing in Australia which is said to help find posts related to a specific interest or theme and is similar to the hashtag feature on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Instagram Head Adam Mosseri on Thursday confirmed that the keyword search feature is now expanding and will be available to all Threads users and in all languages. The feature was initially tested in some English-speaking countries and then rolled out to more English and Spanish-speaking countries.

Mosseri added that the search action will get more improvements soon but did not share details of what features would be added. Responding to a user’s query about support for viewing search results in chronological order on Threads, Mosseri said that it would “create a substantial safety loophole”.

The keyword search feature is expected to be the stepping stone for Threads to add support for trending topics — a feature that is available on the platform’s rival X. The inclusion of post counts while adding interactive tags to posts hints at the arrival of support for trending topics.

Last month, Threads also rolled out the ability to delete profiles without deleting the linked Instagram account. This functionality was not available when the microblogging platform was launched in July — users could only temporarily disable their Threads profile in the past, as the company had revealed that the profile was closely tied to the original Instagram account.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga Trailer: Anya Taylor-Joy Takes on Chris Hemsworth in Post-Apocalyptic Wasteland

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga trailer is finally here — in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. At this year’s Comic-Con Experience (CCXP) in Brazil, Warner Bros. dropped the first look at George Miller’s prequel film, with Anya Taylor-Joy portraying the younger version of the skinhead wasteland heroine originally played by Charlize Theron in 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road. Slated to release in May 2024, the film appears to have amped up on the explosions and frantic vehicular action, as the future Imperator is seen finding means to survive out in the desert and plotting her eventual escape. Continuing his decades-long trend, director Miller has again teamed up with Nico Lathouris to write this new Mad Max movie.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga trailer

The trailer of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga opens with a desperate woman’s voice cutting through the gunshots: “Whatever you have to do, however long it takes, promise me you’ll find your way home.” This is clearly directed at our protagonist Furiosa (Taylor-Joy) who is seen lost and dawdling about in the desert, presumably cut off from her bike gang abductors, who snatched her from the Green Place of Many Mothers, a lush haven in the sandy dunes where one could grow crops. It’s the same location where the Vuvalini tribe were found residing among the crows in Mad Max: Fury Road when the older Furiosa (Theron) finally reunited with them, years later. This prequel shows the character’s rebellious origins where she’s caught amidst a ruthless gang war between two tyrants on a sweeping journey to the Citadel.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga Telugu trailer

Warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth), the leader of a rowdy bike horde, is behind Furiosa’s abduction, tagging her along for every hellish mission across the dystopian, barren landscape. A power struggle ensues when the gang runs into a much younger Immortan Joe, sporting ghost-like makeup and a breathing apparatus — a conflict Furiosa sees as a viable opportunity to escape, as she smears war paint (it’s probably grease), grabs a buck load of firearms, and commandeers tanks to launch harpoons onto enemies. We might also learn how she loses her left forearm, leading her to brandish a prosthetic arm, as seen in the 2015 film. “The darkest of angels,” a bound-up Dementus says with a heavy Australian accent, staring up at a battle-hardened Furiosa, now sporting a buzz cut. “The question is… do you have it in you to make it epic?”

I’m not sure if director Miller did it intentionally, but in most scenes involving Hemsworth, he’s seen wearing a blood-soaked cape, a visual choice that’s heavily reminiscent of the Nordic God of Thunder Thor, which the actor is known for playing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The previous film, Fury Road, opened to critical and commercial fanfare, grossing $380 million (about Rs. 3,166 crore) at the global box office — with Miller initially insistent on keeping Theron as the lead in the prequel through CGI de-ageing before plans fell apart. “Despite the valiant attempts on The Irishman, I think there’s still an uncanny valley,” Miller said in an interview. Furiosa also stars Alyla Browne (The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart) and Tom Burke (The Wonder).

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is out May 23 in theatres.

Seoul, Dubai, Santa Monica Named Among Leaders in Metaverse in WEF Report

The metaverse sector, although gradually, is showing signs of growth and adoption in different parts of the world. Citing a report by technology intelligence firm ABI Research, the World Economic Forum (WEF) said that nearly 700 cities will have some kind of a metaverse infrastructure by the year 2030. As of now, however, South Korea’s Seoul, UAE’ Dubai, and US’ Santa Monica have been named in the report as the leading cities of the international metaverse sector.

Listing the benefits of cities exploring the metaverse, WEF said this virtual world ecosystem brings along cost savings related to the design, operation, and maintenance of urban infrastructure while also helping city leaders gain ‘political capital’ if the city’s population becomes tech friendly.

“As cities look to decarbonise, digital twin technologies can help by enhancing urban design through simulation, planification and optimisation,” the report highlighted.

In the US, Santa Monica is the first city to lets users go about the city through a metaverse-enabled social media app called Flick.

“FlickPlay encourages people to walk through real places to find scarce digital tokens, which can be collected and then used to unlock videos with rare filters that you can show off to your friends. By moving people through parts of cities that are less travelled, FlickPlay can also create new economic activity while reducing crime,” it explained.

Dubai is viewing metaverse as an essential part its economic growth campaign that is expected to stand among world’s top cities in terms of GDP. To strengthen its position in the sector, Dubai is looking to attract 1,000 firms working in the blockchain and metaverse sectors. In the next seven years, Dubai aims to be home to over 40,000 Web3 professionals. As per WEF’s research, more than 50 percent consumers in Dubai look forward to creating and monetising content in the metaverse, the report said. While 60 percent consumers see the metaverse as a business opportunity, 78 percent brands wish to be more engaged with Web3.

“Dubai will develop Web3 technology and its applications to enhance new ways of working in tourism, education, retail, healthcare and remote work. How will the city achieve this? By fostering innovation, increasing research and development, while boosting talent and investment by helping developers, content creators and digital platform users to get support in education on all things metaverse,” the report noted.

As for Seoul, the growth of the metaverse in South Korea is completely being backed by the government there. The Asian country has already committed $180 million (roughly Rs 1,500 crore) to the development of a national metaverse ecosystem. The phase one of Metaverse Seoul lets residents download the world’s first urban metaverse app and use it to play games, experience city attractions, and complete mundane tasks.

“Metaverse Seoul phase two will bring in more services from 2024 that include connecting local industries with foreign investors, while the final phase will integrate virtual and augmented reality technology into the day-to-day running of the city’s infrastructure,” the WEF report claimed.

Mark Zuckerberg went bullish on the metaverse tech when he rebranded Facebook to Meta in September 2021. Despite incurring back-to-back losses in its metaverse-dedicated unit, Zuckerberg has kept his faith intact on this branch of emerging technology.

As per Statista, it was estimated that the global metaverse market stood at $65.5 billion (roughly Rs. 5,44,035 crore) in 2022. This year, the market is expected to rise to $82 billion (roughly Rs. 6,81,082 crore), before surging to $936.6 billion (roughly Rs. 77,79,526 crore) by 2030.

WhatsApp Rolls Out Secret Code Feature for Locked Chats on iOS and Android: How it Works

WhatsApp is rolling out a new Secret Code feature for locked chats. The Chat Lock feature announced by the company earlier this year has now been extended and allows you to hide your locked chats behind a secret code. As a result, you can hide your sensitive conversations with other users from view when you’re passing your phone to a friend, or if your phone falls into the wrong hands. Alternatively, you can continue to protect your chats with your phone’s PIN or passcode, or by scanning your face or fingerprint.

On Thursday, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the rollout of the new Secret Code for Chat Lock feature that lets you select a chat and lock it behind a password or a phrase. Chats hidden behind a secret code will not be visible in the main chat list and can only be accessed when the secret code is entered, adding another layer of safety to the messaging platform.

The new Secret Code setting on WhatsApp

Gadgets 360 was able to test out the feature on the beta version of the app for Android smartphones. After you open the list of locked chats and tap the three-dot menu at the top > Chat lock settings > toggle Hide locked chats and enter a secret code that you can remember easily, your locked chats will no longer be visible in the main chat window — currently, WhatsApp shows a shortcut for locked chats when swiping down on the chat screen — these can be accessed using your fingerprint or Face ID.

After you’ve set a secret code, there’s only one way to reveal your locked chats on WhatsApp — you must enter the same secret code in the search bar on the app. This will show conversations protected by the Chat Lock feature, but only until you exit the app.

If you don’t need to hide the presence of your chats on WhatsApp, you can revert back to the original Chat Lock feature by opening the list of locked chats using your secret code, then tapping on the three-dot menu > Chat lock settings > toggle Hide locked chats off to disable the Secret Code feature.

WhatsApp also says that you won’t have to enter individual chat settings to lock a chat — you can simply long press a chat to lock it. While the secret code feature has begun rolling out to users, it will be available globally in the coming months. There’s no word on when — or whether — WhatsApp will bring the secret code feature to WhatsApp for Desktop.
