Apple Plans to Equip All iPhone 16 Models With Revamped Action Button: Report

iPhone 16 — expected to debut in the second half of 2024 as the successor to the iPhone 15 series of smartphones — could be equipped with Apple’s new Action Button. While the company equipped the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max with the new button designed to replace mute switch, a new report states that the company is planning on equipping all four models in the lineup with the customisable button, which is expected to arrive in a revamped form.

MacRumors reports that Apple will include the Action Button on all iPhone 16 models that are likely to arrive next year. Unlike the iPhone 15 lineup, the non-Pro iPhone 16 models are also expected to feature the new Action Button. It is also suggested that the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus might be the last iPhone models to debut with the mute switch — even the iPhone SE 4 is tipped to debut in 2025 with the new button.

Meanwhile, the report states that the Action Button on the iPhone 16 series will be revamped next year. Instead of using the regular mechanical button like the volume and power keys, the new Action Button will offer capacitive-style button functionality like the iPhone SE (2022) home button. It is unclear whether all models in the series will be equipped with the redesigned button — codenamed Atlas.

When Apple unveiled the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max this year, the firm touted the new functionality offered by the Action Button that expands the use of the button that was used to switch between vibrate and ring modes on the iPhone.

With the action button, you can toggle ringer modes or accessibility features, launch the camera app or magnifier app, start or stop a voice memo or the flashlight, and enable and disable focus modes on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The switch to a capacitive button means that it might be able to detect different pressure levels. However, enthusiasts will have to wait for several months before Apple unveils the purported iPhone 16 series of smartphones in 2024.

iPhone 15 Pro’s Action Button Lets You Replace Siri With Voice-Enabled ChatGPT: Report

The iPhone 15 series made its debut earlier this month at Apple’s ‘Wonderlust’ event, bringing in a host of new changes to the company’s traditional design. Most notably, the new phones ditched the much-maligned lightening port for the standardised USB Type-C. iPhone 15 Pro models also did away with the series regular mute switch, opting instead for a customisable Action Button, that really just blows up possibilities of what you can do on an iPhone 15 Pro with the tap of a button. Since the Action Button can be assigned to an array of apps and functionalities, including the Shortcuts app on iPhone, pretty much every app can now be bound to it. And as some have discovered, you can now use ChatGPT as your voice assistant in place of Siri on iPhone 15 Pro.

ChatGPT, OpenAI’s wildly popular generative AI chatbot, received support for voice conversations earlier this week, enabling it to have natural back-and-forth conversation with users. This feature, currently only available to ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise customers, essentially transforms the chatbot into an AI-powered voice assistant. Now, with the help of Apple’s new Action Button, ChatGPT can easily replace Siri as the go-to voice assistant on iPhone 15 Pro. As ZDNet first spotted, the ChatGPT app on iOS can be bound to the Action Button using the Shortcuts app.

Simply download OpenAI’s ChatGPT app from the App Store — it’s free. Then, head to Settings>Action Button on your iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max, and then swipe to select Shortcuts option. Then, you tap on ‘Choose a feature’ and simply select the ChatGPT app. This would bind the ChatGPT app on iPhone to the Action Button, allowing you to bring up the app from your homescreen with a single tap.

Since ChatGPT is now voice-enabled it can effectively substitute Siri as the default voice assistant on iPhone 15 Pro. As mentioned before, however, the voice features are only available to ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise subscribers for now. A ChatGPT Plus subscription starts at $20 (roughly Rs. 1,660) per month. iPhone users can already use the popular Google Assistant in place of Siri via its dedicated iOS app. The app can also be bound to a Shortcut, so that when you say “hey, Siri, hey, Google,” Siri redirects you to the Google Assistant for your queries.

Additionally, ChatGPT Plus users can now also surf the Web beyond ChatGPT’s September 2021 cutoff date. OpenAI announced Thursday that ChatGPT users can start browsing the Internet and, essentially expanding the data the chatbot can access beyond its earlier September 2021 cutoff. So, now with the Action Button, iPhone 15 Pro users could also access updated information off the Web via ChatGPT. This feature is also currently limited to ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise customers, but OpenAI plans to expand it to all users soon.

iPhone 15 Pro Action Button Controls for Silent Mode, Camera, Flashlight, More Found in iOS 17 Code: Report

iPhone 15 Pro — Apple’s flagship smartphone that is expected to make its debut this year — could be equipped with a new Action button, after features related to the physical button were reportedly spotted on the latest iOS 17 beta. Previous leaks suggest that the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will feature a new physical button in place of the mute switch, and a new report now suggests that Apple’s next Pro smartphone models could support at least nine functions that are customisable.

Apple recently rolled out iOS 17 beta 4 to developers, with various bug fixes and tweaks to the interface. The latest beta also includes code that point to the existence of the rumoured Action button, according to a MacRumors report. The code also suggests that the button could support a range of features, from toggling accessibility settings to enabling and disabling Focus modes.

In addition to offering the functionality of the mute switch it is expected to replace, the Action button on the iPhone 15 Pro could also be allowed to quickly enable or disable a Focus mode. It might also allow users to enable features like AssistiveTouch, Zoom, and other accessibility features, according to the report. Meanwhile, it could be used to toggle the flashlight option or quickly launch and click photos.

The report also claims that the Action button could be used to run specific Shortcuts, launch the Translate app, or record voice memos on their smartphone. Users who rely on the Magnifier app on their iPhone to read small text might also be able to program the button for quick access to the app.

Earlier this year, news reports hinted at the possibility of Apple replacing the mute switch on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max with an Action button that works like the one on the Apple Watch Ultra that was launched last year. At the time, it was speculated that the button could be used to control various device features including toggling themes, low power mode, rotation lock, taking screenshots, using the built-in Shazam feature, and so on.

Meanwhile, images of purported covers for the iPhone 15 Pro were recently leaked on the Chinese microblogging site Weibo. The leaked images suggest the presence of a new button located above the volume toggles on the left side of the phone. Previous iPhone Pro models — including the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max — are equipped with a mute switch in the same location.

It is worth noting that the new button is also covered, like the other buttons on the phone, instead of the previous mute switch cutout. However, it is worth taking these claims and leaked images with a pinch of salt as there are still a couple of months to go before Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 15 lineup of smartphones.
