Why the New York Giants need Ben Bredeson to play well in Tampa Bay

The New York Giants could, potentially, receive a fourth-round compensatory pick in the 2025 NFL draft, according to Nick Korte of Over The Cap.

However, in Korte’s projection, he specifically notes that the fourth-round pick is entirely contingent on offensive lineman Ben Bredeson earning the starting job in Tampa Bay and playing enough snaps to qualify.

If Bredeson fails to play enough snaps, Korte projects the Giants would receive a seventh-round compensatory pick at the bottom of the draft.

The Giants have a 4th rounder on the board for Xavier McKinney leaving for Green Bay, but that is contingent on Ben Bredeson qualifying as a CFA. This could be complicated by the Bucs also drafting Graham Barton in the 1st round, should Barton displace Bredeson as a possible starter at guard, instead of Robert Hainsey at center. The Giants and their fans should be rooting for Bredeson to win a starting job. If Bredeson’s contract does not qualify, the 4th rounder gets demoted to a net value 7th rounder placed at the very bottom of the list.

It’s also important to remember that Over The Cap is just one projection method for compensatory picks and may not match the NFL’s highly secret formula.

Based on the knowledge at hand, Korte has the loss of Saquon Barkley being canceled out by the signing of offensive lineman Jon Runyan Jr.

It’s another reason the Giants should have traded Barkley at last season’s deadline.

Buccaneers agree to terms with ex-New York Giants OL Ben Bredeson

The New York Giants acquired offensive lineman Ben Bredeson in a 2021 trade with the Baltimore Ravens. He went on to start 24 games over the last two years, both at guard and at center, but he will no longer suit up in blue as he agreed to terms with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Friday.

The Giants’ offensive line was awful last season. Changes needed to happen along the line, the Giants have to strengthen the wall protecting Daniel Jones.

Was Bredeson the weakest link? Not remotely, but his loss is just the beginning. The entire line needs an overhaul and general manager Joe Schoen has made that a focus this offseason.

John Michael Schmitz will be around to play center, provided he can stay healthy, but the Giants will have to find additional resources to ensure Jones can remain under center.

New York Giants were prepared to pursue Mike Evans in free agency

One of the New York Giants’ top free agent targets — future Hall of Fame wide receiver Mike Evans — has been taken off the market.

Evans has reached a deal with his current employer, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, on a two-year extension worth a reported $52 million.

The Giants were one of a half-dozen potential suitors seeking to pry Evans away from Tampa, where he’s played his entire 10-year NFL career.

Evans caught 79 of his 136 targets (58%) last season for 1,255 yards and 13 touchdowns. He has registered 1,000 or more yards receiving in each of his 10 seasons with the Bucs, which is an NFL record.

Buccaneers hire ex-Giant Thomas McGaughey as special teams coordinator

The New York Giants fired special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey on Black Monday but it didn’t take him long to find a new job.

After generating interest from multiple teams, including the New England Patriots and Tennessee Titans, McGaughey is expected to be hired by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as their new special teams coordinator.

McGaughey spent the past six seasons with the Giants and was also with them from 2007-2010 as their assistant special teams coordinator, picking up a Super Bowl XLII ring during that span.

In addition to the Giants, McGaughey has also spent time with the Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos, New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers, and Carolina Panthers — all as the special teams coordinator or as an assistant special teams coordinator.

Giants lent their practice field to the Bucs after Jets ghosted them

The New York Giants offered some hospitality to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, lending their practice field for a Thursday workout after the New York Jets bailed on their second day of joint practices.

According to Rick Stroud, the Jets backed out of their second joint practice with the Bucs earlier this week, leaving Tampa Bay in a bind. Luckily, the Giants — who had an off day Thursday — were gracious enough to lend their field.

Things got heated between the Bucs and Jets on Wednesday, which included several scuffles between the two teams. Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers was sacked at least six times in a period of 10 dropbacks, according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini.

The Bucs and Jets will face off in their Week 2 preseason game Saturday night at MetLife Stadium.

Baker Mayfield lands with Buccaneers in NFL free agency

Baker Mayfield has a new home.

The 27-year-old quarterback is signing a one-year, $8.5 million deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in NFL free agency, according to multiple reports.

Mayfield now figures to be in the catbird seat to be Tom Brady’s successor after the future Hall of Famer retired for good this offseason.

The move also likely eliminates any possibility that Brady returns to Tampa Bay, as he did last year after announcing his retirement – slim as those chances may have been.

Mayfield, a former No. 1 overall pick with the Browns, has bounced around the league after four underwhelming seasons in Cleveland.

He was traded to the Carolina Panthers last offseason after the Browns landed Deshaun Watson, then was cut halfway through the season and resurfaced with the Los Angeles Rams.

Mayfield went 1-3 with the Rams, but head coach Sean McVay expressed interest in retaining him, either as a backup or a possible security blanket in case injured quarterback Matthew Stafford doesn’t recover properly ahead of the 2023 season.

Instead, Mayfield took a job with the Buccaneers, where he has a much greater chance of starting.

He will likely compete with Kyle Trask, whom Tampa Bay selected in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Tom Brady loses cool over question about altering Buccaneers’ game plan

The pressure may be getting to Tom Brady.

The Buccaneers quarterback nearly lost his cool on Thursday when asked about a report by the San Francisco Chronicle, which claims the seven-time Super Bowl winner changes the team’s offensive gameplan without informing head coach Todd Bowles or offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich.

According to the Chronicle, on the night before each game, Brady holds a separate meeting with the Buccaneers’ skill players to go over the gameplan, and makes tweaks to assignments and formations before handing off a revised blueprint to the coaching staff — which is left in the dark until gameday.

When asked if there is any truth to the report, a seemingly frustrated Brady said, “No. I have no idea. I mean, anybody can write anything, and say whatever they want. So, no. … I’m not gonna respond to every — next question.”

Frustration seems to be the central theme of Brady’s third season with Tampa Bay — following his decision to come out of retirement in March to play a 23rd season. This campaign has not been glamorous, and includes a number of F-bomb-fueled rants.

Sunday’s loss put the NFC South-leading Bucs a single game ahead of the Atlanta Falcons (5-8) and Carolina Panthers (5-8).

Brady finished 34 for 55 for 253 yards with one touchdown and the two interceptions. He was outshined by San Francisco’s “Mr. Irrelevant,” Brock Purdy — the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Purdy, who turns 23 this month, became the first quarterback ever to best Brady in his first start.

After the game, Brady said his team has “a lot of work to do” in the four remaining weeks of the regular season.

“We’ve got to do a better job,” he said. “Today was not good enough.”

The 45-year-old Brady even skipped a postgame shower before the long flight to Tampa Bay from San Fransisco, telling the San Francisco Chronicle, “F–k that. I’m going home.”

It’s been a season of highs and lows for Brady, both on and off the field.

In October, the quarterback announced his divorce from his wife of 13 years, supermodel Gisele Bündchen — with whom he shares two children, 13-year-old Benjamin and 10-year-old Vivian. Brady also has a 15-year-old son, Jack, from a prior relationship with actress Bridget Moynahan.

According to the Chronicle, one member of the Bucs’ organization described Brady’s emotional state amid the breakup: “It’s like seeing Superman without his cape.”

Todd Bowles turns up heat on Tom Brady, Buccaneers

Is there a rift in Tampa?

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles called out some of his players ahead of his team’s “Monday Night Football” matchup against the NFC South rival Saints.

“The leaders lead and everybody else follows,” Bowles told Buccaneers Radio Network via Joe Bucs Fan.

“So it’s time for our leaders to lead and step up. And everybody else has to follow, and make plays. Not just lead but make plays. And show them by example, show them by being vocal, show them by how they practice. And they’ve been doing that for the most part but, you know, we can’t piss away any more ball games sort of speak. So it’s time for us to step up and make plays. We got six games left until we’ve got to get in the tournament.”

The Buccaneers are coming off an overtime loss to the Cleveland Browns in which many questioned the team’s handling of time outs. It marked the first time lost when leading in the final minute of a game. He was previously 218-0 in those situations.

Brady is likely one of the leaders Bowles was referencing on Thursday, after all he is a captain of the team, and Tom Brady.

The Saints have given Brady trouble in his time at Tampa. In five regular season games against the Saints as a member of the Buccaneers, Brady has thrown eight interceptions to seven touchdowns and has a 1-4 record. However, he did lead the Bucs to a playoff victory in New Orleans on the way to a Super Bowl championship two years ago.

The Buccaneers, and the NFC South as a whole, have had a rocky season. Even though they are 5-6 the Buccaneers lead the NFC South, half a game ahead of the Falcons, who play the Steelers this week.

Seahawks vs. Buccaneers, Raiders vs. Colts

Action Network NFL analyst C Jackson Cowart is in his first season in The Post’s Bettor’s Guide. Here are his best bets for Week 10.

Seattle Seahawks (+3) over Tampa Bay Buccaneers (in Munich, Germany)

We bet on the Seahawks last week, and we’re happy to go back to the well on one of the most underrated teams in the league.

Given what we expected coming into the year, it’s a bit baffling to see Seattle ranked fifth in team DVOA and ninth in net points per drive (0.28), but there’s no denying that the formula has worked in the first year sans Russell Wilson. Geno Smith and the Seahawks’ offense gets much of the credit, but this defense has been one of the NFL’s best in recent weeks and should be able to thwart Tom Brady and this limping Bucs unit.

LAS VEGAS RAIDERS (-4.5) over Indianapolis Colts

Some spots are just too obvious to stay away. That’s the case here with the Raiders, and I’m honestly surprised this game hasn’t hit the key number of 7.

Betting on the NFL?

Forget the coaching mess for a second: On the field alone, the Colts rank 31st in DVOA and have one of the worst offenses in football behind struggling sophomore passer Sam Ehlinger. Now consider that his play-caller this week was a quality control coach two years ago, and his current boss has zero coaching experience beyond high school football. This could be the ugliest result of the week.

Last week: 1-0-1. Falcons (P), Seahawks (W).

Season: 7-8-1.
