6 games that could be played in primetime

The 2024 NFL regular season schedule will be officially revealed on Wednesday and for the New York Giants, they have several interesting matchups on tap.

Despite their poor play over the past decade, the Giants are often featured in primetime and during the holidays. That held true last season with six primetime games, including an afternoon game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Christmas Day.

Even with low expectations entering the upcoming season, there are several notable Giants games the NFL might want to shine a light on. Here’s a look at six of those.

Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

All international NFL games are considered primetime and this matchup is a near guarantee. The Giants are no stranger to playing overseas and after being awarded Global Markets Program rights for Germany, it seems inevitable that they end up playing the Carolina Panthers in Munich.

Tom Horak-USA TODAY Sports

Games between the Giants and Philadelphia Eagles are often considered for primetime and often end up in primetime despite the one-sided nature of the rivalry in recent years. But now there’s an added interest: running back Saquon Barkley.

When Barkley returns to East Rutherford for the first time as an enemy, the entire football world will want to watch. The NFL can already hear the cha-ching.

This is another one that seems obvious. The Giants and Dallas Cowboys often find themselves in a primetime matchup and while that generally takes place in Week 1, that won’t be the case this season. Still, the Cowboys draw ratings and the NFC East rivalry always sells. This one will come at Jurrah World.

Rob Carr/Getty Images

With a home and away against their divisional rivals, this potential primetime game could be played at either location. We’re choosing MetLife Stadium based on the assumption (complete guess) that the Giants host the first game against the Washington Commanders this season. It pits former LSU teammates and first-round draft picks, Jayden Daniels and Malik Nabers, against each other.

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson is 20-1 against NFC opponents as a starter. That lone loss? The Giants and quarterback Daniel Jones. No other explanation is necessary for why the NFL might consider this game for primetime.

John Jones-USA TODAY Sports

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow is a ratings draw. That’s all there is to it. If this game ends up in primetime it has everything to do with the 27-year-old and nothing to do with the Giants.

Burrow has never faced the Giants.

New York Giants won’t open 2024 season against Dallas Cowboys

The New York Giants will not open the 2024 regular season against the Dallas Cowboys.

Instead, the Cowboys will face off in Week 1 against the Cleveland Browns, which will be Tom Brady’s broadcasting debut on Fox.

The Giants lost last season’s opener to the Cowboys by an embarrassing score of 40-0 at MetLife Stadium. They dropped the follow-up meeting down in Arlington, 49-17, in November.

From 2012 through 2019, the Giants and Cowboys faced each other eight times in Week 1. The NFL gave them a three-year break from 2020 through 2022 but they were right back to “tradition” last season.

Dallas has defeated the Giants in 13 of the last 14 meetings between the two teams.

Giants legends Lawrence Taylor, Ottis Anderson speak at Trump rally

New York Giants legends Lawrence Taylor and Ottis “O.J.” Anderson made surprise appearances on Saturday in Wildwood, New Jersey, taking the stage at Donald Trump’s campaign rally.

The pair were welcomed to the microphone by the former president and received a rousing ovation from the thousands in attendance.

“I grew up a Democrat, and I’ve always been a Democrat until I met this man right here,” Taylor said. “Nobody in my family ever will vote for a Democrat again.”

Anderson was a bit more subdued when it was his turn to speak.

“Don’t you just love that guy?” Anderson said, referring to Taylor. “It has been a very exciting day. You guys, not one person left. You’re still here yelling and screaming.

“Thank you guys for all of your support. And how about a great shout-out for Metro Exhibits, baby. We made it happen. All because of you!”

Trump acknowledged the all-time Giants greats as they left the stage but admitted they don’t always see eye-to-eye on all things.

“He’s doing quite a great job. What do you think, Lawrence? Doing a great job!” Trump said. “Look at those two guys, O.J., Lawrence, my golfing friends. We don’t have to agree on everything!”

Anderson was a first-round pick of the then-St. Louis Cardinals in the 1979 NFL draft. He was traded to the Giants during the 1986 season and went on to rejuvenate his career in East Rutherford, highlighted by winning MVP in a Super Bowl XXV victory over the Buffalo Bills. The two-time Super Bowl champion and 1989 Comeback Player of the Year was enshrined in the Giants’ Ring of Honor in 2022.

Taylor was a first-round pick of the Giants in the 1981 NFL draft and his resume is too extensive to list. The three-time Defensive Player of the Year and one-time league MVP changed the way the game of football is played, both offensively and defensively. He is widely regarded as the greatest of all time.

In 1999, Taylor became a first-ballot Pro Football Hall of Famer. He was inducted into the Giants’ Ring of Honor in 2010 and had his No. 56 jersey retired in 1994.

Did New York Giants misstep by passing on QBs in NFL draft?

This week on the Giants Wire Podcast, we recap the 2024 NFL draft and discuss the six selections made by New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen.

The Giants reportedly attempted to trade up for a quarterback but fell short. Did Schoen make enough of an effort? Was Malik Nabers over J.J. McCarthy the right pick at No. 6 overall?

How will the rest of the team’s draft class impact the 2024 regular season?

Additionally, former Giants general manager Dave Gettleman emerged from his hiding spot to throw some shade. What do we make of his “clown” comments? Did he have a point?

And then there’s Saquon Barkley… Upset that Giants fans boo the Philadelphia Eagles? It’s a strange issue to have.

Those topics (and more) are discussed in the latest episode of the Giants Wire Podcast, which is hosted by Ryan O’Leary (@RyanO_Leary on X) and joined by site editor Dan Benton (@TheGiantsWire).

New York Giants remaining picks after Day 2

The New York Giants kicked off the 2024 NFL draft by selecting LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers with the No. 6 overall pick despite rumors of a possible trade-up.

They closed out the night quietly but were immediately back to work on Friday.

With two picks in tow, general manager Joe Schoen set out to further improve his roster, selecting Minnesota safety Tyler Nubin in Round 2 (No. 47 overall) and Kentucky cornerback Andru Phillips in Round 3 (No. 70 overall).

The Giants will now enter Saturday with three remaining selections and lingering needs at defensive tackle, guard/tackle, and running back.

With Day 2 now in the books, here are the Giants’ remaining picks over the next 24 hours:

  • Round 4 (No. 107)
  • Round 5 (No. 166, from Carolina)
  • Round 6 (No. 183)

Barring any trade — up or down — the Giants will make three picks on Day 3. They do not currently have a seventh-round pick after trading it to the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for linebacker Isaiah Simmons last season.

The Giants re-signed Simmons in early March.

2024 NFL draft: Would taking a first round WR be a risky gamble for Giants?

What’s the riskiest position for an NFL team to spend a first-round draft pick on?

In a recent study going back to 2000, the position that “hit” the least in the first round was wide receiver. Of the 77 wide receivers taken in the first round of the NFL draft, only 27 percent went on to earn a second contract with the team that drafted them.

The Giants are in prime position to select one of this draft’s top three wideouts at No. 6 overall. They will likely be staring at one or more of the following: Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison Jr., Rome Odunze of Washington, and LSU’s Malik Nabers.

Since 2000, the Giants have only used a first-round pick on a wide receiver three times — Hakeem Nicks (2009), Odell Beckham Jr. (2014), and Kadarius Toney (2021).

One could argue they hit on two, but according to the above metric, they technically only “hit” on Beckham.

Nicks played five seasons for the Giants and was an integral piece on their Super Bowl XLVI championship team. He did not sign a second contract with the Giants after his five-year, $12.54 million deal with the club expired in 2014.

Nicks signed with the Indianapolis Colts in 2014 but then came back and finished his career with the Giants in 2015.

Beckham played five seasons for the Giants and did earn a second contract with the club, but was traded in a blockbuster deal to the Cleveland Browns in 2019

Toney had all kinds of issues as a Giant. He suffered from a combination of injuries and inconsistency. The Giants dealt him to Kansas City for a third- and a sixth-round pick in 2022.

Could Giants gamble and draft Michael Penix Jr. at No. 6 overall?

The 2024 NFL draft is a mere day away and the rumors are flying in abundance. The New York Giants’ sixth pick has been a hot topic as most analysts have Big Blue taking a quarterback with that pick, or trading down, or even trading up for a better quarterback.

Even ESPN’s Dan Graziano can’t pin down what the Giants are going to do.

A month ago, many in the league believed their favorite quarterback in the class was McCarthy. If that were true, things have changed. The rumblings early this week: The Giants’ guy is Maye.

But that’s not all there is to this story. Graziano goes on to explain that he’s been told the Giants and Vikings have been the most active in talking with the Patriots about their No. 3 pick. Should Washington take Jayden Daniels at No. 2, Graziano says the Giants might be interested in trading up for Drake May.

While that’s an interesting rumor, it’s not set in stone that the Giants will try to trade up for a quarterback. There is, however, a real possibility that the Giants take a gamble on Mike Penix Jr. with the sixth pick, says Graziano.

I’ve also been told in recent days that the Giants like Penix and might even be willing to take him as high as No. 6. There’s a lot of chatter flying around, but what is clear is that the Giants have done significant work on the quarterbacks and are very open, if not desperate, to come out of Thursday night with one of them.

Considering Daniel Jones is still owed $36 million in guaranteed money for 2024, taking a quarterback who needs some development isn’t out of the question.

The question remains, though, should the Giants gamble on Penix? Or any quarterback? Or should the Giants seek out a projected year-one starting receiver?

The Giants’ front office only has a few more hours to research, analyze, and evaluate the players they are considering taking in the draft. The rumors will continue to fly, but no one will really know what the Giants are going to do until they do it.
