New York Giants may conduct joint practices with Detroit Lions in 2024

The New York Giants and Detroit Lions held joint practice during training camp in 2023 and are looking to run that back in 2024.

While speaking to reporters at the Annual League Meeting this past Tuesday, Lions head coach Dan Campbell revealed that he’s spoken to Giants head coach Brian Daboll about linking up once again.

“That’s not in stone,” Campbell said, via the Detroit Free Press. “Because I said this last year and I know Mr. (John) Mara got on me like, ‘Hey, this thing’s already out.’ So there’s a chance. I don’t know if it’s going to get done or not, but we’ve been talking about it just because we wanted to reciprocate the fact they came to us, we wanted to give it to them.”

The Giants visited Allen Park for two joint practices last year ahead of a preseason game at Ford Field. This time around, as Campbell alludes, the practices would be held in East Rutherford.

Since teams are only permitted to request a single preseason opponent, these discussions would indicate that both the Giants and Lions have asked the league to pair them up once again.

Still, Campbell, who is a former Giant himself, would like to have joint practice in back-to-back weeks just as they had done last year.

“I would love to do two weeks again like we did last year,” Campbell said. “It’ll be predicted on who that is and whether we go to them or they come to us. But yeah, I’m all for it.”

Meanwhile, the Giants held joint practices with the New York Jets in 2022 but had their plans for 2023 canceled. At the time of that cancellation, Jets head coach Robert Saleh said the two sides would revisit those discussions in 2024.

Bryce Huff says he chose Philadelphia Eagles over New York Giants

The New York Giants entered the offseason in need of edge rush depth and before acquiring Brian Burns from the Carolina Panthers, had their eyes on some of the free agents.

However, there were other destinations that those free agents deemed to be more desirable.

Consider linebacker Bryce Huff, who recently signed with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he will join former Giants running back Saquon Barkley.

Huff revealed that he passed over the Giants, his former team, the New York Jets, and others to sign with the Eagles.

Huff was signed by the Jets as an undrafted free agent shortly after the 2020 NFL draft. He played the last four seasons with Gang Green, exploding in 2023 with 29 tackles (19 solo), 10 sacks, and one pass defensed.

The Eagles entered free agency on fire, grabbing up their targets quickly with fair contracts. The Giants’ limited cap space has certainly been a problem, but you have to think that the perceived environment around the team isn’t great.

Huff isn’t the first player to pass on the Giants and sign elsewhere, and he certainly won’t be the last. But hearing yet another player choose a division rival is disheartening, to say the least.

John Mara, Woody Johnson regularly discuss installing grass field

The world learned this week that the 2026 FIFA World Cup final will be played at MetLife Stadium and that grass will be installed to meet the requirements of a FIFA venue.

MetLife Stadium switched from UBU Speed S5-M to FieldTurf Core HD before the 2023 NFL season as a result of the rash of injuries incurred by players on the old surface over the 14 years since it opened in 2010.

Now they will have to switch to a natural surface, an idea that has been bandied about between the owners of the Giants and Jets for quite some time now.

Jets owner Woody Johnson told reporters covering the Super Bowl in Las Vegas this week that he and Giants owner John Mara discuss installing a grass field “at least once a week,” per NJ Advance Media.

Johnson added that grass could be a challenge, because the stadium hosts so many events — and because two NFL teams share the open-air venue until at least late December or early January, when the regular season ends. And everyone knows what New Jersey’s weather can be like then.

Grass is not optimal at MetLife, one of the most popular venues in North America because of both logistics and the expense.

As stated, the Northern New Jersey weather would literally put a damper on the effort, which is one of the reasons the teams opted for an artificial surface to begin with.

With two NFL teams playing on the surface — possibly on back-to-back days — and all of the other events that take place at the venue (soccer, college football, concerts, monster trucks, wrestling, etc.) it would be a severe challenge to care for a grass surface year-round.

A grass surface at MetLife full-time might end up being more unsafe than the current one they have in place.

MetLife Stadium will install grass field for 2026 FIFA World Cup Final

MetLife Stadium, which will be the host site for the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, has announced it will convert to a grass surface to be in compliance with FIFA requirements.

MetLife Stadium switched from UBU Speed S5-M to FieldTurf Core HD before the 2023 NFL season as a result of the rash of injuries incurred by players on the old surface.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament, which will play games in all three North American countries, will begin on June 11 and commence in New Jersey on July 19 at MetLife.

The 16 host cities contain two in Canada, three in Mexico, and 11 in the United States: Vancouver, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Guadalajara, Kansas City, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Monterrey, Mexico City, Toronto, Boston, New York City (MetLife), Philadelphia, and Miami.

Eight of the 16 venues (including MetLife) have permanent artificial turf surfaces that will be replaced with grass under the direction of FIFA and research teams from the University of Tennessee and Michigan State.

For the first time, the tournament will feature 48 teams as opposed to the current 16 and the total number of games will increase from 64 to 104.

Once the World Cup concludes, the Giants and Jets are expected to return the artificial turn to MetLife Stadium.

Giants interview Jets’ Michael Ghobrial for ST coordinator, per report

The New York Giants have a new candidate for their special teams coordinator vacancy and he already works in the same state.

According to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, the Giants interviewed New York Jets assistant special teams coach Michael Ghobrial for their special teams coordinator job.

Ghobrial has been with the Jets since 2021. Prior to that, he served as a special teams coordinator at three different college programs, including Washington State (2020), Hawaii (2018-19) and Tarleton State (2016-17).

Here’s a bit more on Ghobrial, per the Jets’ official site:

Ghobrial began his coaching career at his alma mater, UCLA, first as an undergrad assistant (2009-10), then a quality control coach (2011) and finally as a graduate assistant (2012-13). Following his time with the Bruins, he coached at Syracuse (2014) and Colorado Mesa (2015), serving as the team’s co-special teams coordinator in addition to coaching the defensive line and outside linebackers.

Spent two seasons as a defensive end with UCLA, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in history and a master’s degree in social science and comparative education.

This is the third interview the Giants have reportedly conducted with a special teams coordinator candidate in recent days after Big Blue spoke with Chicago Bears assistant special teams coach Carlos Polk on Thursday and San Francisco 49ers assistant special teams coach Matt Harper earlier in the week.

ESPN predicts Giants will sign this edge rusher away from Jets

The New York Giants will have approximately $34 million in available salary cap space to spend in free agency this coming March.

How will they spend it?

They are a team that needs upgrades in many areas, but Aaron Schatz of ESPN believes a pass rusher to complement Kayvon Thibodeaux could be in order.

One player Schatz mentions as a possibility for the Giants is the Jets’ Bryce Huff.

The Giants will make a splash with a surprisingly big free agent contract for edge rusher Bryce Huff, currently of the crosstown Jets. Huff has started only seven games in his career but is a bit of a secret star with a 23.5% career pass rush win rate.

Huff has been with the Jets since being inked as an undrafted free agent out of Memphis in 2020. He came into his own this season with 10.0 sacks after having a second-round tender placed on him by the Jets in March.

The Giants were hoping that Azeez Ojulari would be that bookend for Thibodeaux, but he has not been able to stay healthy. It could be time to move on and Huff could be had at a reasonable price.

Trevor Siemian engineers final drive

Heroes, zeros and the full blitz for the Jets’ 30-28 win over the Commanders on Sunday.

Hero

Breece Hall scored his first two rushing touchdowns since October and finished with 95 rushing yards on 20 carries and caught 12 passes for 96 yards.

It was his best overall performance of the season and the Commanders defense had no answers for him.

Unsung hero

Trevor Siemian wasn’t flashy, completing 27 of 49 passes for 217 yards with one TD and one INT.

But he did engineer the game-winning drive after Washington took the lead, 28-27, late in the fourth quarter.

Zero

Sam Howell, who entered the game having thrown for 3,568 yards and 19 TDs, was just 6-for-22 for 56 yards and two INTs before he was pulled from the game by Washington and replaced by Jacoby Brissett in the third quarter.

Key Stat

Seventeen points scored by the Jets in the first quarter, their most in a first quarter since 2014.

Quote

“This game I feel like shouldn’t have been close at all. It was just good to get a win today, but you can’t be content about beating a team you feel you should have been beating already. But we’ll enjoy it.’’

— Jets running back Breece Hall

MetLife Stadium ranked worst venue in NFL by the players

MetLife Stadium, home to the New York Giants and New York Jets, is regularly panned by fans for its boring aesthetics and overpriced concessions. It also faces heavy criticism from NFL players for its poor playing surface.

But where does MetLife Stadium rank another other venues around the league? As it turns out, dead last.

The Athletic recently polled active NFL players and MetLife Stadium received 18.4 percent of the last-place vote. The second-worst was FedEx Field, home of the Washington Commanders, with 13.9 percent of the vote.

Players also sounded off on the league’s worst venues to play in, with the New York Jets and Giants’ MetLife Stadium outranking the others (18.4 percent) in that category. The Washington Commanders’ FedEx Field (13.9 percent) and Buffalo Bills’ Highmark Stadium (12.7 percent) were the other top vote-getters for the worst stadium to play in.

“Turf sucks and the whole place is lame,” one player said.

But it’s not just the stadium that opposing players hate, it’s Giants and Jets fans, too.

“Fans are horrible. Everything about that place is horrible,” another player said.

When MetLife Stadium opened in 2010, it was the most expensive stadium built in the United States at an approximate cost of $1.6 billion.

Zach Wilson’s pick dooms Jets as offense struggles in loss to Raiders

LAS VEGAS — Zach Wilson was on the verge of quieting his critics.

Then, he fueled them.

Jets’ Aaron Rodgers clarifies he didn’t have a bong on sidelines

No, Aaron Rodgers did not have a bong on the sidelines during the Jets’ “Monday Night Football” loss to the Chargers.

But the item in the box he was holding could still get him into the party spirit.

Video circulated of the Jets quarterback, who is still rehabbing from the torn Achilles he suffered just four plays into his debut with the team, picking up a box before a beaker-shaped piece of glassware came tumbling out, spilling liquid in the process.

Rodgers clarified Friday on “The Pat McAfee Show” that it was not a bong, but instead a bottle of Maestro Dobel tequila.

“That was not a bong, first of all,” Rodgers said. “Let’s go through a couple of things. No. 1, I was dapping up by buddy Hugh [Coles]. Hugh plays George McFly in the new Broadway play ‘Back to the Future.’ So shout out to Hugh. No. 2, there’s a gentleman named John Sutcliffe, he is the ESPN Deportes sideline reporter and he’s tried to interview me in Spanish a few times with some funny results. I dap him up, it’s partly his fault because I was walking off the field with my Maestro Dobel tequila that John Sutcliffe gives me every time he sees me on ‘Monday Night Football.’

“I’m walking off and I hear a British guy yell my name. So I turn over and there’s Hugh, my buddy. He’s British, but he’s incredible in ‘Back to the Future’ without the accent. Anyway, I see Hugh, give him a hug, dap him up, go to pick it back up, s–t falls out and I lose half my tequila. So, shout out to John for bringing me tequila, shout out to Maestro Dobel, shout out to Hugh, shout out to bongs everywhere, but that was not one of them.”

Rodgers has previously been open about his use of ayahuasca, leading McAfee to say it must be “a cool feeling” that people would believe Rodgers would actually hold a bong on the sidelines.

Rodgers chided people who believed it.

“It’s a little weak with the conspiracies,” Rodgers said. “I feel like it should’ve been something more like, you know, dolphin semen or Giants tears or something better than that.”
