Giants grab an elite defender in PFN’s way-too-early 2025 mock draft

The New York Giants aren’t expected to be a playoff team in 2024 and that means they will be in a position to select another top name in the NFL draft.

In Pro Football Network’s latest 2025 mock draft, analyst James Fragoza has the Giants picking sixth overall, which would mean they will have picked in the top 10 eight times since 2015 and in the top 12 nine times since 2014.

In this exercise, the Giants pass on a quarterback in favor of Michigan defensive tackle Mason Graham.

6) New York Giants: Mason Graham, DT, Michigan

Were it not for (Kentucky’s Deonte) Walker’s freakishness, Mason Graham would be the DT1 in the class. He consistently wins as a run defender and pass rusher and has few holes in his game.

Michigan likes to rotate its DTs frequently (and the Wolverines have the depth to do so without significant drop-off). But when on the field, offenses feel Graham’s impact.

The Giants naturally have Dexter Lawrence locked up for the foreseeable future but would love to have a more permanent partner to pair with him in the middle.

This season, they brought in veteran Jordan Phillips and will use him in a rotation with Rakeem Nunez-Roches and their Oregon trio (D.J. Davidson, Jordon Riley, and Casey Rogers).

This pick could be moot if one of those players — or UDFA Elijah Chatman — breaks out this season.

Why the New York Giants need Ben Bredeson to play well in Tampa Bay

The New York Giants could, potentially, receive a fourth-round compensatory pick in the 2025 NFL draft, according to Nick Korte of Over The Cap.

However, in Korte’s projection, he specifically notes that the fourth-round pick is entirely contingent on offensive lineman Ben Bredeson earning the starting job in Tampa Bay and playing enough snaps to qualify.

If Bredeson fails to play enough snaps, Korte projects the Giants would receive a seventh-round compensatory pick at the bottom of the draft.

The Giants have a 4th rounder on the board for Xavier McKinney leaving for Green Bay, but that is contingent on Ben Bredeson qualifying as a CFA. This could be complicated by the Bucs also drafting Graham Barton in the 1st round, should Barton displace Bredeson as a possible starter at guard, instead of Robert Hainsey at center. The Giants and their fans should be rooting for Bredeson to win a starting job. If Bredeson’s contract does not qualify, the 4th rounder gets demoted to a net value 7th rounder placed at the very bottom of the list.

It’s also important to remember that Over The Cap is just one projection method for compensatory picks and may not match the NFL’s highly secret formula.

Based on the knowledge at hand, Korte has the loss of Saquon Barkley being canceled out by the signing of offensive lineman Jon Runyan Jr.

It’s another reason the Giants should have traded Barkley at last season’s deadline.

New York Giants land a QB in USA TODAY’s way-too-early 2025 mock draft

The 2024 NFL draft came to a close this past Saturday so that naturally means it’s time to look ahead to the 2025 NFL draft, right?

It’s an annual exercise and that’s not going to change this year.

Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz of USA TODAY has already compiled his way-too-early 2025 mock draft and his projections don’t look good for the New York Giants. He has them picking first overall next year based on ESPN’s pre-draft win projections and ending up with Georgia quarterback Carson Beck.

Unlike this point last year with Caleb Williams and Drake Maye, there’s no quarterback out there who looks to be a surefire top-five pick. Beck, however, might be the front-runner to be the highest signal-caller taken – and therefore in the mix for No. 1. The 6-4, 220-pound passer stepped into his first year as a starter and took command, throwing for 3,941 yards while completing nearly 73% of his passes.

Beck’s arm strength can help bring back a big-play element that has long been absent for New York with Daniel Jones at the helm. But the Georgia standout is also a precise and on-schedule operator, which should allow him to form a potent connection with 2024 first-round receiver Malik Nabers, an electric threat after the catch.

With an off ramp to Jones’ contract available after this season, Big Blue could end up moving quickly to admit fault on the extension and change course. Beck might make for an attractive option to which the team could pivot, especially after reports that the team made a serious push to try to move up for Drake Maye.

The same trend of the past three years is developing — quarterback, quarterback, quarterback.

Experts and Giants fans are desperate to move on from Daniel Jones and have beaten that dead horse so thoroughly that only dust remains. This time, however, they may finally get their wish as the Giants have an out in Jones’ contract after this season.

Of course, that only happens if the team struggles and Jones plays poorly. If he somehow remains healthy and can play like he did in 2022, the anti-DJ crowd may not get their wish in the end.

Giants trading Leonard Williams to Seahawks for multiple picks

The New York Giants fell to 2-6 with a Sunday loss to the New York Jets, and that essentially triggered their need to sell at the NFL trade deadline.

With precious little cap space remaining and no hope at the playoffs, the Giants have agreed to trade defensive lineman Leonard Williams to the Seattle Seahawks.

In exchange for The Big Cat, the Giants will receive a 2024 second-round pick and a 2025 fifth-round pick.
