Samsung Galaxy S24 FE in the Works, to Launch Earlier Than Usual: Report

Samsung Galaxy S23 FE was launched in October last year as a tweaked variant of the regular Galaxy S23. Now, the Galaxy S24 FE is said to be in the works as a successor. A new report from a Korean news outlet indicates that a Samsung supplier has started mass production of display driver chips for the Galaxy S24 FE and the handset will go official in the summer. This rumoured timeline is considerably earlier than the release of any previous Fan Edition model. The Galaxy S24 FE is expected to debut as a toned-down version of the vanilla Galaxy S24.

As per a report by The Elec, Galaxy S24 FE is scheduled to be released this summer. The report citing industry sources claims that a Samsung supplier has begun mass production of TED (TCON Embedded Driver IC) for the organic light emitting diode (OLED) of the upcoming Fan Edition smartphone.

The Galaxy S24 FE’s rumoured summer launch window (June to August) would be earlier than the Galaxy S23 FE launch. The latter was announced in October last year, around eight months after the debut of the Galaxy S23 series in February. The upcoming model is likely to come as a watered-down variant of Galaxy S24.

If this report turns out to be true, then Samsung will have an eventful second half this year. The company is expected to announce the Galaxy Ring, Galaxy Z Fold 6, Galaxy Z Flip 6, Galaxy Watch 7 lineup and more around July and August.

As per past leaks, the Galaxy S24 FE will get a 6.1-inch AMOLED display and could run on Exynos 2400 SoC or Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC depending on the market. It is said to feature 12GB LPDDR5X RAM and could be offered in 128GB and 256GB UFS 3.1 storage options. It is rumoured to be backed by a 4,500mAh battery.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 Said to Offer Same Battery, Charging Speed as Galaxy Z Fold 5

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 is expected to launch later this year alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 6. Samsung usually uses its best hardware in its fold lineup and previous leaks and rumours indicated that it will arrive with substantial upgrades over last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 5. Unfortunately, the company might keep the same battery and fast charging speed for the upcoming book-style foldable smartphone.

Tipster Ice Universe (@UniverseIce) has posted the battery and charging specifications of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 on X. As per the tipster, the upcoming foldable will house a 4,400mAh battery with a charging speed of 25W, the same as the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 4. This also corroborates a 3C (China Compulsory Certification) website listing.

Samsung is expected to announce the Galaxy Z Fold 6 in July in Paris. It is tipped to come with a titanium frame and could be available in three colour options — dark blue, light pink, and silver. The flagship foldable could use a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy SoC and 16GB of RAM.

Last year, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 was unveiled with a starting price tag of Rs. 1,54,999 for the base 12GB RAM + 256GB storage configuration. It has a 7.6-inch QXGA+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X Infinity Flex display on the inside with an adaptive refresh rate ranging from 1Hz to 120Hz. On the cover, it has a 6.2-inch full-HD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display. It runs on a custom Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy SoC under the hood alongside 12GB of RAM.

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 has a triple rear camera setup comprising a 50-megapixel wide-angle camera, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, and a 10-megapixel telephoto camera. It also includes a 10-megapixel camera on the cover display. It has an IPX8 rating for water resistance.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 Pro Tipped to Get Bigger Battery Than Galaxy Watch 5 Pro

Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 series is expected to launch later this year alongside the purported Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 foldables. The company has yet to confirm the launch of any of the products but there have been several rumours about them over the past few weeks. The Galaxy Watch 7 lineup has been tipped to launch with three possible variants, each with varying connectivity options. Now a report has leaked the battery details of the Galaxy Watch 7 Pro.

A GalaxyClub report spotted the battery details of an upcoming smartwatch on the Safety Korea certification site. The battery with the model number EB-BL705ABY was listed with a rated capacity of 578mAh. This is larger than the rated capacity of the 573mAh rated battery which was used in the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro and marketed as 590mAh.

Therefore, a smartwatch carrying a larger battery than the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro could be the Galaxy Watch 7 Pro. Earlier reports claimed that the Galaxy Watch 7 series is expected to come with three variants – out of which, one is likely a Pro model. Notably, the Galaxy Watch 6 series launched in July 2023 with a base Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 and a Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic.

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 7 lineup is said to come with Wi-Fi-only and eSIM-supported variants. The former is expected to come with model numbers SM-L300 and SM-L305, while the latter is said to carry model numbers SM-L310 and SM-L315. The rumoured top-of-the-line third variant, expected to be the Galaxy Watch 7 Pro, is likely to carry model numbers SM-L700 and SM-L705. All the model numbers ending with the number five are said to support cellular and eSIM connectivity, while the other models are likely to support only Wi-Fi.

The Galaxy Watch 7 models are also tipped to get 32GB of onboard storage, which is a considerable upgrade over the 16GB on the Galaxy Watch 6 models. The purported smartwatches are expected to run on a new version of Wear OS and One UI Watch and come with an upgraded 3nm chipset which is likely to be 50 percent more power efficient than the current ones.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 Prototype Image Surfaces, Dimensions Leaked

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 is still months away, but a new leak has revealed more information about the handset. A recent report claimed that the South Korean tech giant could launch a more premium version of the standard model dubbed Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra this year as well, but no details about it are known. Now, a tipster has revealed the possible dimensions and display ratio of the standard Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 model, and based on the information, the foldable might get some design changes.

According to a post by tipster Ice Universe on X (formerly known as Twitter), the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 might weigh less than its predecessor by a significant margin. The Galaxy Z Fold 5, launched last year weighs 253g, but in comparison, this year’s model could weigh 239g. For reference, this is the same weight as the OnePlus Open.

The weight is not the only improvement the foldable smartphone is tipped to get. The tipster said in a separate post, “The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 standard version has an unfolded thickness of 5.6mm, a folded thickness of 12.1mm, and a weight of 239 grams. The resolution of both the internal and external screens has been improved. The internal screen is 7.6 inches, 7:6 ratio, and the external screen is 6.3 inches, 22:9 Proportion.”

To unpack, the thickness of the smartphone in both folded and unfolded state has been trimmed compared to the predecessor, which means the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 could fit in the pocket much more comfortably. The external display is also slightly bigger, which means the tech giant could offer slimmer bezels. Finally, the tipster also highlights that the resolution of both the external and internal display has improved.

Further, Ice Universe also shared an image with the caption, “This is the prototype of Galaxy Z Fold 6”. In the picture, a bar-shaped smartphone can be seen which appears pretty similar to last year’s Z Fold 5. Not a lot is known about Samsung’s foldables at this point. But a report last week claimed that both the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and the Galaxy Z Flip 6 could come with a 25W wired charging solution. If this is true, then the charging speed on this year’s foldables will see no improvements compared to the last year’s models.

Samsung Testing Exynos 2500 Chip With Better Performance Than Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, Tipster Claims

Samsung is already testing the performance of its Exynos 2500 SoC — the company’s purported chip that is likely to power its next generation of flagship smartphones, according to a tipster. The chip is said to offer better performance than Qualcomm’s current flagship processor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 that was unveiled in October 2023. Details of the chip’s performance are currently unavailable, unlike the recently leaked benchmark scores of the alleged Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 and MediaTek Dimensity 9400 chipsets that recently surfaced online.

Tipster PandaFlash (X: @ReaSufyanWaleed) claims in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that the purported Exynos 2500 chip “easily outperforms the current Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor in terms of both CPU and GPU performance” while details of the chip’s NPU performance and overall efficiency are currently unavailable. It’s worth noting that this is a rather vague claim with no performance statistics or benchmarks to back it up, and is worth taking with a grain of salt.

Specifications of the Exynos 2500 ‘Dream Chip’ leaked earlier this year suggest that the chipset will comprise a Cortex-X5 core clocked at 3.2GHz or more, three Cortex-A730 cores at up to 2.5GHz, two more Cortex-A730 cores and four Cortex-A520 cores with undisclosed clock speeds.

While benchmarks for the Exynos 2500 are yet to surface online, details of three competing flagship processors have already been leaked. An early benchmark test for Apple’s rumoured A18 Pro saw the chip score 3570 points in the single-core test on Geekbench 6, while the multi-core score was 9,310 points.

Similarly, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 was claimed to have a single-core score of 2,845 points and multi-core score of 10,628 in a recent benchmark test. Qualcomm’s next flagship mobile processor is expected to compete with the Dimensity 9400 chip that is said to have achieved single-core and multi-core scores of 2,776 and 11,739 points, respectively.

These early benchmarks suggest that both the rumoured chips from Qualcomm and MediaTek will offer better multi-core performance than the A18 Pro. We can expect to hear more about the Exynos 2500 in the coming months, and the chip is likely to make its debut in the next-generation Galaxy S25 series of smartphones in early 2025.

iPhone SE 4 to Sport OLED Screen Manufactured by BOE Instead of Samsung: Report

iPhone SE 4 — Apple’s fourth generation ‘Special Edition’ smartphone — is likely to be equipped with an OLED screen manufactured by a Chinese firm, according to a report. The iPhone maker was reportedly negotiating the cost of the display on the upcoming midrange smartphone with three suppliers — one is said to have dropped out over the cost of each display. There’s currently no word from Apple on plans to launch a new iPhone SE model — the current model was unveiled in 2022.

A ZDNet Korea report (in Korean) citing industry sources states that Chinese electronic component manufacturer BOE (Jingdongfang) has won the bid to manufacture the OLED screen for the purported iPhone SE 4. As per the report, Apple was accepting bids from three suppliers — Samsung, BOE, and Tianma — for the successor to the iPhone SE (2022) model.

BOE is likely to provide the majority of displays for the iPhone SE 4, according to the publication, after Samsung dropped out of the race over business feasibility. Samsung Display reportedly quoted a price of $35 to $40 (roughly Rs. 2,900 to Rs. 3,300) for each display unit, while the Chinese companies sought $30 (roughly Rs. 2,500). The iPhone SE 4 is tipped to adopt a design similar to the iPhone 14 with support for Face ID.

Apple reportedly offered a considerably lower price of $25 (roughly Rs. 2,100), prompting Samsung to end the discussions in the middle of March. The South Korean tech conglomerate was not very keen on producing the displays for the midrange phone from the outset, due to the lower pricing issues, the source told the publication.

Among the two Chinese suppliers, only BOE appears to be the firm capable of producing display units for the iPhone SE 4, and is reportedly ready to supply the component for Apple’s more affordable smartphone. Meanwhile, Tianma has been unable to meet Apple’s technical requirements for the display of the iPhone SE 4, which is rumoured to make its debut in 2025.

Google’s Circle to Search Feature Rolling Out to Pixel 6 Series, Samsung Galaxy S23 Lineup, and More

Google’s Circle to Search was introduced in January this year with the Samsung Galaxy S24 series. This was packed alongside a few other AI-backed features like Live Translate and Note Assist. However, later that month, with the January Pixel feature drop, the tech giant brought the feature to the Pixel 8 models. Earlier in March, the company also extended this feature to the Pixel 7 lineup. Now, Google has announced that more Android handsets will have access to the Circle to Search tool.

The Mountain View-based search giant has confirmed that the feature is “currently rolling out to more Android devices”. The rollout will begin this week and it will be available on the Google Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7a, Pixel Fold, and Pixel Tablet. It will also be available on the Samsung Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, Galaxy S23 Ultra, Galaxy S23 FE, Galaxy Z Fold 5, and Galaxy Z Flip 5 as well as the Galaxy Tab S9 series.

As of today, Google’s Circle to Search feature is already available in several flagship handsets including Samsung Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, Galaxy S24 Ultra, Google Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 8, and Pixel 8 Pro.

Google also mentioned in the post that the Circle to Search feature can help users shop for specific styles or items without much hassle. It can also assist users during their travels to foreign places, especially ones with a different language than their native ones, by instantly translating anything that is on their screen. All users need to do is long-press the home button or navigation bar and tap the translate option.

The Circle to Search feature allows users to search anything, instantly, without switching apps with a few gestures. Users can circle, scribble, highlight or tap anything on their screen, like images, part of an image or text, and opt for the search option. It not only gives information quicker but with Generative AI support, it is meant to aid in more complex research.

Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 alongside the Galaxy Tab S9 series and Galaxy Watch 6 series at its first Galaxy Unpacked event in South Korea. We discuss the company’s new devices and more on the latest episode of Orbital, the Gadgets 360 podcast.
