Samsung Galaxy Ring Reportedly Spotted on Good Lock App Hinting at Imminent Launch

Samsung Galaxy Ring was announced at the Galaxy Unpacked event on Wednesday, January 17. It was accompanied by a small teaser video which hinted at the design. It was claimed to be a “health and wellness device.” However, the company did not reveal any feature details, nor did it confirm a launch timeline. Several leaks about the Galaxy Ring have surfaced online over the past few days. The possible dimensions of the smart ring were suggested previously, now it has been spotted on one of the firm’s software suites. 

A Reddit user spotted the Samsung Galaxy Ring on the Good Lock application under the battery widgets section alongside other Samsung devices. This suggests that the device is under development and is likely to launch soon. It has previously been tipped to launch later this year alongside the purported Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6. 

An earlier report claimed that the upcoming Galaxy Ring will be “incredibly” lightweight. It is expected to be available in multiple sizes up to size 13 (22.2mm). The smart ring may also launch with three colour options. It is also likely to support pogo pin charging.

From the company teaser of the Samsung Smart Ring earlier this year, we have seen a round, smooth ring equipped with multiple sensors placed on the underside. These are expected to help users with health and fitness tracking. The company touts it to be a “powerful and accessible health and wellness device.”

The Galaxy Ring, like most health and fitness trackers, has been tipped to be able to track, measure, monitor, and upload health, fitness, and sleep data to necessary applications. Older leaks suggested that the device may carry electrocardiogram (ECG), photoplethysmography (PPG)  or atrial fibrillation or AFib sensors, alongside the more common 24×7 heart rate, SpO2, and sleep trackers.

India Smartphone Shipments Grew 25 Percent YoY in Q4 2023, Xiaomi Climbs to the Top: Counterpoint

Smartphone shipments in India grew by a significant 25 percent year-on-year (YoY) for the October-December period (Q4) in 2023, as per a new report by market research firm Counterpoint. Xiaomi climbed to the top position in the quarter with 18 percent of the market share, a first since Q3 2022. The feat was achieved on the back of the company’s foray into the affordable 5G segment with its Redmi 13C. Vivo retained its second spot, followed by Samsung which slipped to third after leading the market for four consecutive quarters. Chinese smartphone brands Realme and Oppo grabbed the fourth and fifth spot, respectively.

In its report, Counterpoint highlighted the 61 percent contribution of 5G smartphones as one of the major factors behind the growth in the quarter. Notably, 5G phones in the affordable Rs. 10,000 – Rs. 15,000 price band contributed 24 percent of the total smartphone shipments. The premium smartphone segment also witnessed a 51 percent growth. Apple led the segment with a 17 percent market share, as a result of the iPhone 15 series launch.

Coming to brand-wise comparison in the top five positions, Xiaomi appeared as the market leader taking 18 percent of the market share. Vivo remained in the second position for a remarkable fourth quarter in a row, capturing 17 percent of the smartphone market. In the third spot, Samsung was only able to grab 16.8 percent of the share, after a strong Q3 showing where it dominated the market. Realme featured at the fourth position, taking 11 percent of the market share. The report also highlighted that the company was the fastest-growing brand with a 69 percent YoY growth. With a 10 percent hold of the market, Oppo retained the fifth spot.

However, despite a good quarter, the wider landscape for smartphone shipments in India in 2023 remained flat at 152 million units, a separate Counterpoint report highlighted. The market research firm noted challenges emerging from macroeconomic turbulence resulting in low demand and an inventory build-up in the first half of 2023 as the reason for the lack of growth. “The market started recovering in the second half of the year supported by 5G upgrades and better-than-expected festive sales,” the report added.

Samsung held the top position in 2023 after taking 18 percent of the market due to strong showing in the first three quarters. This is the first time the South Korean tech conglomerate led a calendar year since 2017. Notably, the company launched the Samsung Galaxy S23 series along with the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Galaxy Z Flip 5 in 2023. Showing a stable performance, Vivo retained the second spot with a 17 percent share. Chinese smartphone brands Xiaomi, Realme, and Oppo occupied the next three spots with 16.5 percent, 12 percent, and 10.5 percent of the market share, respectively.

While Apple did not feature in the top five positions in shipments, it surpassed the ten million mark in revenue for the first time in a calendar year, leading the category.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 Early Renders Showcase Wider Displays and Slimmer Design

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 are only a couple of months old, but speculations about their successors are already emerging on the Web. Most recently, early renders of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 based on one of Samsung’s newest patents have leaked online. The renders suggest major design improvements for the book-style foldable device. The handset appears to have a slimmer design with a larger external display. Samsung is expected to release the Galaxy Z Fold 6 alongside Galaxy Z Flip 6 in the second half of this year.

Tipster David Kowalski (@xleaks7), in collaboration with Pigto, shared supposed renders of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6. The renders, based on Samsung’s recent patent filing, suggest bigger inner and outer displays for the upcoming foldable offering more room for users to perform daily tasks. The smartphone could also offer a slimmer and wider design than the current iteration.

Samsung is expected to introduce a novel hinge module for the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 6. It is said to sport a different aspect ratio as well.

While not much is known about the Galaxy Z Fold 6 at this point, early leaks about the Galaxy Z Flip 6 suggest that Samsung is testing a larger screen for the next-generation flip. It is expected to get a 3.9-inch cover panel, instead of Galaxy Z Flip 5’s 3.4-inch cover screen. The Galaxy AI features that debuted on the Galaxy S24 series are also expected to land on the new foldables as well.

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 are expected to go official in either July or August. With just around six months to go for the potential launch, we can expect more new rumours and leaks about the devices to pop up online in the coming weeks.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Series, Galaxy Z Fold 5 Could Get Car Crash Detection Feature: Report

Samsung Galaxy S24 series and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 could get a car crash detection feature soon, as per a report. A new sensor was found by a developer in the Galaxy Z Fold 5 called ‘Car Crash Detect Wakeup’, which led to the speculation that the South Korean tech giant might be bringing this feature to its flagship phones. Notably, both Apple and Google have been shipping this feature on their smartphones; the former since the iPhone 14 and the latter since the Pixel 4 in the US (the feature was expanded to India and other markets in November 2023).

The hidden sensor was first detected by Android Police’s Mishaal Rahman. As per the report, the sensor showed up on the Tasker app, which allows users to automate tasks based on context to perform actions that the phone isn’t natively programmed to do. Rahman found a sensor named Car Crash Detect Wakeup in the list of all sensors the handset carries, with a ‘special trigger’ mode. This particular one is a composite virtual sensor, meaning it borrows data from multiple physical sensors and processes it to read if a car crash has occurred.

A similar sensor was also found by the developer in the Samsung Galaxy S24 series. Reportedly, in both cases, batching sensor events have been disallowed in the design, likely to eliminate any delays in reporting a car crash. As such, it can immediately flash the notification to the user and notify the emergency services, if needed.

Interestingly, the report also highlighted a hidden app in Samsung’s One UI 6.1 build called MoccaMobile, which contains codes to start and stop the car crash sensor. However, MoccaMobile was also present in older versions of the OS skin including One UI 5.1.1 build for Galaxy Z Fold 5 as well as One UI 6.0 build for the Galaxy S23 Ultra. This is strange considering the latter is not even equipped with the car crash detection sensor.

All of this points out to two possible scenarios. The first is that Samsung is indeed working on bringing the feature to the abovementioned smartphones, and while the code was ready for a while, the sensors were finally put in place with the Galaxy Z Fold 5. If this is true, delays could be attributed to final tweaks and testing, and it can be said that the Car Crash Detection feature could soon make a debut.

On the flip side, smartphone makers are known for shipping software with codes from unfinished or dropped features that never see the light of day. The MoccaMobile app could be one of those. At the moment, Samsung has shared no plans to bring a car crash detection feature to its phones.

Google Enables eSIM Transfer Feature While Setting Up Android Smartphones: Report

Google has enabled support for transferring eSIMs — an embedded, digital SIM that can be used to activate a mobile plan — across Android smartphones, according to a report. The feature first appeared when some users were able to transfer their eSIM from an older Pixel phone to the Pixel 8 last year, and now users can reportedly transfer their digital SIM from their existing smartphone to a Samsung Galaxy S24 series phone, which shows the feature is expanding beyond Pixel phones.

Android Police reports that the setup process for the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra includes a message asking you if you want to transfer your SIM from another device. You are prompted to unlock your existing device and place it next to the new phone, after which a popup appears on the older phone’s screen to begin the transfer.

Just like setting up a new eSIM, you need to scan a QR code to move your existing one from the older phone to the newer Android handset. The feature to transfer your SIM card should eliminate the need to visit a nearby outlet, offering the same convenience of popping out a physical SIM card and placing it in a new phone.

Last year, Google announced at MWC 2023 that it would introduce the ability to transfer eSIMs across devices, while allowing users to convert their existing physical SIM to an eSIM. While the feature was previously spotted last year when Pixel 8 owners were upgrading from an older Pixel phone, its appearance on the Galaxy S24 Ultra is a sign that Google is expanding the feature to other OEMs.

However, the feature to transfer your existing eSIM to another phone isn’t widely available at the moment. The Android Police report states that the feature currently works with T-Mobile eSIM profiles. If you live in other regions, including India, you will have to wait until your telecom operator supports Google’s transfer feature to move your existing eSIM to another Android smartphone.

Samsung’s Galaxy AI to Reach 100 Million Galaxy Mobile Devices This Year

Samsung Galaxy S24 trio of smartphones with Galaxy AI was launched at the brand’s Galaxy Unpacked event earlier this month. A bunch of older flagship Samsung Galaxy smartphones are already believed to get the new smart software features in the first half of this year. Most recently, Samsung Electronics President and Head of MX Business TM Roh announced that the company plans to bring the Galaxy AI to over 100 million devices worldwide this year. The Galaxy S24 series offers several AI features including Live Translate, Chat Assist, Note Assist, and Circle to Search.

TM Roh, during his India visit on Monday (January 29), revealed that Galaxy AI will reach 100 million Galaxy mobile devices by the end of this year. “This will also amplify mobile AI usage and bring benefits to Galaxy customers that cannot be found anywhere else”, he added. ” With Galaxy S24, our first AI phone, we have opened a new era of AI phones and Galaxy AI enables users to break communication barriers, enhance their productivity, and unleash creativity like never before” he said. He further confirmed that Samsung will provide the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra with seven generations of Android OS upgrades and seven years of security updates.

Additionally, the Samsung Mobile chief said the company’s research and development centres in Bengaluru and Noida have significantly contributed to the development of Galaxy AI.

The Galaxy S24 series debuted with Galaxy AI features including Circle to Search, Live Translate, Note Assist, Photo Assist and more. The AI features available currently on Galaxy S24 phones are expected to be available on previously released flagship phones including the Galaxy S23 series, Galaxy Z Fold 5, and Galaxy Z Flip 5 among others sometime in the first half of this year.

Samsung’s Galaxy AI and its features will reportedly remain free for users until 2025. The South Korean brand may consider introducing more powerful AI features in the future for paid Galaxy AI subscribers.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Series to Be Available on Blinkit in Select Cities; Doorstep Delivery in 10 Minutes

Samsung Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra were unveiled at the company’s Galaxy Unpacked event last week. The latest flagships are currently up for pre-orders in India and are set to go on sale for the first time starting Wednesday, January 31. Ahead of the sale, Samsung has joined hands with hyper-local delivery company Blinkit to offer doorstep delivery of the Galaxy S24 series in select cities. The company is claimed to deliver new handsets to buyers within 10 minutes of receiving the order.

Samsung, via a press release on Thursday (January 25), announced a tie-up with Blinkit to deliver its recently launched Galaxy S24 series in India. Customers in Bengaluru, Delhi-NCR, and Mumbai can order Galaxy S24 Ultra, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 smartphones on the instant delivery platform for doorstep delivery. The handsets will be delivered in less than 10 minutes of receiving the order, claims Blinkit. Meanwhile, other online retailers will take at least one day to deliver the handsets.

Customers buying the Galaxy S24 series through the Blinkit app or website can avail of an instant cashback of Rs. 5,000 for payments made using HDFC Bank credit cards.

The Galaxy S24 has a starting price tag of Rs. 79,999 for the base 8GB + 256GB variant, the Galaxy S24+ pricing starts at Rs. 99,999, and the Galaxy S24 Ultra has a starting price tag of Rs. 1,29,999.

Samsung Galaxy S24 series run on Android 14-based One UI 6.1 and boasts Dynamic AMOLED 2X displays with up to 120Hz refresh rate. The Galaxy S24 packs 8GB of RAM, while the top-end Galaxy S24+ and Galaxy S24 Ultra offer 12GB of RAM. The Galaxy S24 Ultra runs on a tweaked version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC called “Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC for Galaxy” in all regions. The India variants of Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ smartphones have Exynos 2400 SoC under the hood.

All three phones have IP68-rated dust- and water-resistant build. Samsung has equipped the Galaxy S24 Ultra with a quad camera setup led by a 200-megapixel primary camera. The regular models have triple rear cameras led by a 50-megapixel wide-angle camera.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra comes with a 5,000mAh battery with support for 45W wired charging and Fast Wireless Charging 2.0 that offers 15W charging speeds. The Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ pack 4,000mAh and 4,900mAh batteries with 25W and 45W wired charging support, respectively.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Series to Be Manufactured in Noida Facility for Sale in India and Export

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra at its Galaxy Unpacked event in the US earlier this week. During the launch event, the South Korean conglomerate announced that the latest Galaxy S24 series will be manufactured at its factory in Noida, Uttar Pradesh for both domestic sales as well as exports. Apple is already selling India-built iPhone 15 models in the country and other parts of the world. Google is also following in the footsteps of Apple to produce some units of its latest Pixel 8 series smartphones in India starting this year.

J B Park, President and CEO of Samsung India, during a briefing at the Galaxy Unpacked event on Wednesday (January 17) that Gadgets 360 attended, confirmed that the latest Galaxy S24 series will be made in India. The company will use its manufacturing facility in Noida for the production of Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S4 Ultra to cater for the requirements of both domestic and global markets.

“At Samsung, we are proud to be driving premiumisation in India. I am positive that India will be at the forefront of embracing the AI revolution by operating Galaxy S24,” he said.

Samsung already meets the majority of the domestic demand in India through local manufacturing at the Noida factory. Last year’s Galaxy S23 series was manufactured at the same facility.

Besides Samsung, Apple is selling its iPhone 15 models manufactured in India locally and in other parts of the world. Google will also start manufacturing its flagship Pixel 8 lineup in India later this year.

Samsung’s new Galaxy S24 is priced at Rs. 79,999 for the base 8GB + 256GB storage variant. The Galaxy S24+ pricing starts at Rs. 99,999, while the Galaxy S24 Ultra has a starting price tag of Rs. 1,29,999. They are currently available for pre-order in India and will go on sale starting January 31.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Series AI Features Will Only Remain Free Until 2025, Website Shows

Samsung Galaxy S24 series was unveiled by the company at an event in California on Wednesday, and the company spent most of its presentation showing off new artificial intelligence (AI) features that are powered by the company’s Galaxy AI technology. However, a footnote on Samsung’s web pages for the new Galaxy S24 series models reveals the Galaxy AI features will only be available on supported Samsung Galaxy devices for a two-year period. The company is also bringing Galaxy AI features to select older devices.

On the device pages for the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, the Galaxy S24, and Galaxy S24+, the company has touted the new AI features offered by the three models. Meanwhile, a footnote at the bottom of the page clearly states “Galaxy AI features will be provided for free until the end of 2025 on supported Samsung Galaxy devices. Different terms may apply for AI features provided by third parties.”

While this means that customers who buy a Samsung Galaxy S24 series handset will have access to these features at no additional cost until the end of 2025, there’s no word from the company on whether customers will have to shell out more money to access these features after the two-year period.

Samsung is not the first company to launch software features on new smartphone models that will be provided at no additional cost for a limited time period. Apple launched the iPhone 14 series of smartphones with support for a new Emergency SOS via Satellite feature that will be available for free until November 2025. Companies might charge for a service in order to ensure that it is sustainable.

However, the wording of Samsung’s footnote is unclear as to whether all of the company’s AI-powered Phone, Messages, Gallery, and Notes app features will be part of a subscription, or if the company will simply charge for third-party AI-powered features like Circle to Search that was created in partnership with Google. We can expect the company to share more details on the cost of these AI powered features in the future.
