WWDC 2023 Keynote Today: How to Watch the Apple Event Livestream and What to Expect

WWDC 2023 is set to begin today, and the Cupertino company will begin its annual Worldwide Developers Conference with a keynote event that typically showcases the company’s software advancements and updates to iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS. This year, the iPhone maker is also reportedly planning to unveil Apple Reality Pro, its first mixed reality headset, that will run on a new xrOS operating system and feature both augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies. The company is also tipped to launch new Mac models during the WWDC presentation.

WWDC 2023 keynote livestream timings, how to watch online

Apple has announced that the WWDC keynote event will begin at 10am PT (10:30pm IST) today, at Apple Park in California. The in-person event will also be livestreamed via the Apple.com website and YouTube. The keynote can also be viewed from the Apple TV app and the Apple Developer app. You can also watch the livestream from the player embedded below.

What to expect from WWDC 2023

Apple usually showcases updates for its devices at WWDC, and the firm is expected to reveal details of iOS 17, iPadOS 17, macOS 14, tvOS 17, and watchOS 10 at the keynote event. The company is also rumoured to show off its highly anticipated Apple Reality Pro mixed reality headset today. Apple may also announce new MacBook and Mac Pro models at the event, according to recent reports.

Apple Reality Pro

While Apple hasn’t announced any plans to launch a mixed reality headset, several leaks and rumours have suggested that the company is preparing to launch a device that uses both AR and VR technology and runs on a new xrOS operating system. It is said to bear a $3,000 (roughly Rs. 2,47,500) price tag and feature high-resolution Micro OLED displays with over 5,000 nits of peak brightness and could be powered by an externally attached battery pack.

iOS 17 and watchOS 10

According to recent reports, iOS 17 will allow an iPhone to turn into a smart display when connected to a charger. The update is also expected to bring features aimed at mental wellbeing, including a journaling app. The company’s Wallet and Health apps are also tipped to get a fresh coat of paint.

iOS 17 is also expected to be the first version of the operating system that allows customers to install applications outside the App Store, a functionality that is expected to be enabled in the EU. Meanwhile, watchOS 10 is expected to introduce major design changes, including a new widget-focussed interface that displays even more information at a glance without moving around the interface.

macOS 14, iPadOS and tvOS 17

Unlike iOS 17 and watchOS 10, there aren’t many reports to suggest major changes headed to Apple’s operating systems for Mac, iPad, and Apple TV. Instead, these updates could bring incremental feature updates and tweaks to improve performance and user experience on these devices.

New Mac hardware

Apple is said to be planning to announce new Mac models during its WWDC presentation. These include a new 15-inch MacBook Air that is powered by an M2 chip. We can also expect to see a new Mac Pro model, the first one in the series to be powered by an Apple Silicon chip, and the first update to the powerful computer that was announced at WWDC 2019.

Kaspersky Finds Cybersecurity Threat That Targets iPhone Users via Malicious iMessage Attachment

Prominent cybersecurity and anti-virus firm Kaspersky has discovered a new cyberattack threat that targets iPhone models running older versions of iOS via iMessage application. The malware, found when the company was monitoring its own Wi-Fi network for mobile devices, infects the phone via a received iMessage, which contains a malicious attachment. The threat doesn’t require the iPhone user to do anything and utilises iOS vulnerability to install a spyware that takes complete control of device and user data.

According to a report about their findings published by Kaspersky, the malicious attachment sent via iMessage executes a code without the need for any action from the user. The malicious code then runs a set of commands for collection of private user data.

Kaspersky CEO Eugene Kaspersky tweeted about the iOS cyberattack, detailing that the spyware extracts private information like microphone recordings, photos from instant messengers, geolocation, and other data and transmits it to remote servers. The firm has dubbed the cyberattack threat as “Operation Triangulation.”

Kaspersky said that the malware was found on the iPhones of dozens of employees and could target other iPhone users as well. He also added that the threat had been neutralised and details of the vulnerability have been sent to Apple. The CEO also noted that disabling the iMessage service would prevent vulnerable iOS devices from the attack.

The company said that after the malware is successfully installed on the device, the initial text and the accompanying exploit in the iMessage attachment are deleted. Kaspersky’s report said the attack was ongoing, and iOS 15.7 was the most recent version among the devices that were successfully targeted. iPhone models running iOS 16 appear to be safe from the threat, but Kaspersky did mention in the comments section of its report that they could not guarantee that other iOS versions were safe.

On Friday, Kaspersky also released tools for users to check if their device was infected.

Back in February, Apple released updates that fixed major vulnerabilities with iOS 16.3 and macOS 13.2 for supported iPhone, iPad and Mac models. At the time, Apple credited the researchers who found the flaws that allowed a remote user to bypass protections put in place by Apple and gain access to a user’s personal data as well as their camera, microphone, and call history.

ChatGPT App for iOS Now Available in More Countries Including India: All Details

ChatGPT application for iOS users has been expanded to more countries. Initially, OpenAI, the company behind the artificial intelligence chatbot, launched the app only in the United States. The firm unveiled the app on May 18. They also confirmed that a similar Android app is in the works. On Thursday, OpenAI announced that the iOS app’s access was expanded to 11 additional countries. Friday the roster grew to accommodate iOS users across multiple nations, bringing the total up to 45 countries.

As per the company’s announcement till May 26, the ChatGPT app for iOS users is now available in the following 45 nations – the United States, the United Kingdom, India, Albania, Croatia, France, Germany, Ireland, Jamaica, Korea, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Algeria, Argentina, Azerbaijan, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Estonia, Ghana, Iraq, Israel, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Lithuania, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mexico, Morocco, Namibia, Nauru, Oman, Pakistan, Peru, Poland, Qatar, Slovenia, Tunisia and the United Arab Emirates.

OpenAI, the artificial intelligence research company backed by tech giant Microsoft, released the ChatGPT chatbot to the public in November 2022. In February 2023, the company launched its first paid subscription plan, ChatGPT Plus, with premium services including a quicker response time and priority access to future upgrades and developments. The free version continues to exist, although with some lag and other limitations.

The ChatGPT app for iOS is free for all users and comes without the interruption of advertisements. It can be assumed that the services on the app will equate to the services offered by the free version of the ChatGPT supported on browsers. The layout of the app, however, resembles that of a messenger service, giving users the impression of having a ‘chat’ like any other messaging app with the AI chatbot.

iOS users can use Apple‘s built-in speech recognition feature to dictate text or make use of OpenAI’s open-source speech recognition system Whisper. During an interaction, once the user hits the send button with their queries or comments, the chatbot processes the request and delivers an AI-generated answer. More information or a different answer can also be requested on the app. It supports code blocks and allows users to copy and paste answers.

The app saves users’ chat history for model training by default and it also enables users to access previous conversations on the desktop. Data sharing with the app can be disabled but that would also result in unsaved chat history, essentially bringing up a clean slate each time users log in to the app.

For users with ChatGPT Plus subscriptions, the advanced GPT 4 features will be accessible through this ChatGPT app. The subscription costs $20 (roughly Rs. 1,600) per month. In India, OpenAI has partnered with Stripe to support e-mandates for recurring payments as per Reserve Bank of India guidelines.

BGMI Returning to India ‘Soon’ After 10-Month Ban, Krafton Confirms

Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) is coming back and will be available for download soon in the country. Korean publisher Krafton has confirmed that the Indian government has allowed them to resume operations of the uber-popular battle-royale game, following its ban in July last year, owing to privacy and security concerns. The game was completely removed from both Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store under Section 69 of the IT Act — in turn affecting the mobile e-sports scene in the country. BGMI is now the first app to return to India, among the hundreds of apps the government banned within the past couple of years.

“We are highly grateful to the Indian authorities for allowing us to resume operations of Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI). We would like to extend our gratitude to our Indian gaming community for their support and patience over the past few months,” Sean Hyunil Sohn, CEO, Krafton India said in a press release. “We are excited to announce that Battlegrounds Mobile India will be available for download soon and we cannot wait to welcome you back to our platform.” He also touched upon the remarkable milestones the game achieved in the country, surpassing 100 million users within a year of its launch in July 2021.

Following PUBG Mobile’s ban, BGMI, an India-exclusive version of the game popped into the scene, rekindling the e-sports ecosystem in the country with numerous official and unofficial events, including a broadcast on mainstream television. Dubbed the ‘Masters Series,’ the tournament was telecast live on Star Sports 2 last year, with Global Esports lifting the trophy. “Krafton is a responsible South Korean organisation that abides by the law and has put in place several measures to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations,” Vibhor Kukreti, Head Government Affairs, Krafton India said in a prepared statement. “We strongly encourage our users to prioritize their well-being and follow responsible gaming practices.”

That last sentence is worth taking into consideration since a report from News18 suggests that BGMI will be back initially for three months only — a trial period of sorts, as the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) continues monitoring its activity and ensuring it doesn’t violate any rules set by the Indian government. Moreover, the game is said to be making a return with several adjustments, including a set time limit to restrict the number of hours one could play, alongside changes to the gore effects. While previously, players could change the colour of blood to blue or green via the in-game settings, the change is expected to be permanent/ default.

Back in March, MeitY also removed Dead by Daylight Mobile, the co-op survival horror game from Behaviour Interactive, from Indian mobile storefronts. No explicit reason was given, albeit one could assume it had to do with the game’s publisher NetEase, which is a Chinese firm responsible for distributing the title within Southeast Asia, Japan, and Korea. As mentioned before, the government previously banned several Chinese apps over security concerns.

Currently, there are no set release details for Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), but we can expect it to be available on Android and iOS, as before.

WhatsApp Rolls Out Chat Lock Feature for Keeping Conversations Hidden, Secure

WhatsApp has rolled out new Chat Lock feature to help its users keep their messages and conversations private and secure. While WhatsApp already provide an end-to-end encryption on the app, the new feature act as an added layer by letting users select the conversations that they want to keep hidden from access to anyone else. One can open these conversation only through correct passcode, fingerprint, or Face ID authentication. The feature has been globally launched and will be rolling out to all WhatsApp users on Android as well as iOS.

In a blog post on Monday, Meta announced rolling out a new security layer for WhatsApp chats with the new ‘Chat Lock’ feature. Using this feature will move locked chat threads to a different folder. Any notifications regarding these chats will neither show the sender’s name, nor the message preview. Moreover, the media files shared in these chats will not be saved in the phone’s gallery automatically.

These chats can be locked using several security options like passcode, fingerprint, or Face ID authentication. The Chat Lock feature is available on both WhatsApp for Android and iOS.

To get the feature, users will need to download the latest version of WhatsApp available on App Store, or Google Play Store. The feature is available with WhatsApp for Android version 2.23.10.71 and WhatsApp for iOS in version 2.23.9.77.

To move any conversation in the locked folder, one needs to simply tap on the thread and click on Chat Lock feature. As stated in the blog, Meta is working to introduce several new updates to the feature, such as creating customised passwords which are different from already existing passwords for unlocking the phone. The social media company is also working to make the Chat Lock feature work across all companion devices in which a WhatsApp account is active.

Mighty Quest Rogue Palace Is a Hack-and-Slash Roguelite With Corny Characters and Silly Dialogue

Mighty Quest Rogue Palace, the sequel to The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot, is out now on Netflix Games on iOS and Android mobile devices. Part of Netflix’s significant expansion plans for gaming in 2023, Mighty Quest Rogue Palace has been developed by Ubisoft and is exclusive to the Netflix Games platform on iOS and Android, for now. The game is a hack-and-slash action and adventure title that puts you in charge of a band of heroes tasked with freeing the sleeping and nightmare-ridden mind of a king. The game can be downloaded now on supported devices.

Mighty Quest Rogue Palace: How to play

As with other Netflix Games titles, Mighty Quest Rogue Palace is free to play – if you have a valid Netflix subscription. The popular international streaming platform has been working to establish itself as a provider of not just movies and TV shows, but also mobile games, in a bid to establish itself as an entertainment hub for all kinds of recreational content. Netflix Games titles can be downloaded as separate apps on iOS and Android, but will need you to log in to your Netflix account or be already logged in through the main Netflix mobile app on the same device.

Mighty Quest Rogue Palace: First impressions

Developed by Ubisoft, Mighty Quest Rogue Palace puts you in charge of hero Lord Logan, returning to the palace of the king. Unfortunately, the palace has been overrun by a ‘void’ of sorts, which has swallowed the entire kingdom save for the palace and a few of its occupants, which interestingly includes a royal cat and an entirely useless non-playable character with a wooden bucket on his head, whose only job is to crack silly jokes.

I did have a chance to play Mighty Quest Rogue Palace for a bit ahead of its public release. The game starts off a bit confusing, especially if, like me, you aren’t familiar with the series’ previous instalment, The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot. The learning curve isn’t difficult in itself, but you might spend a few minutes initially just aimlessly slashing away at enemies without properly understanding the point of it all.

Fortunately, the core gameplay is quite easy to get the hang of, since Rogue Palace is, at its heart, a hack-and-slash action game with Roguelike elements that involves attacking and dispatching numerous enemies. That said, you’ll have to keep an eye on your own health, build up your skillset, learn when it’s best to use particular skills, and upgrade your gear and abilities along the way.

The actual action takes place in the mind of the king, as he is locked in an endless slumber while the ‘void’ surrounds his palace. The objective of Mighty Quest Rogue Palace is to enter the king’s mind, free all the heroes, defeat all the monsters and bosses occupying parts of the mind, and eventually banish the void to wake the king and rescue the kingdom. Trips into the king’s mind don’t eliminate the heroes even after all health is drained; you simply return to the palace in the ‘real’ world to upgrade your abilities and gear, and go again.

While the gameplay of Mighty Quest Rogue Palace is fun, I found the long room-clearing procedures a bit repetitive. You’ll find yourself often going through the same rooms and fighting the same bosses as you attempt to progress, and defeat sends you back to the beginning to try again. Apart from improving the Hero’s skills, you’ll also find yourself learning and improving along the way, but that doesn’t let you save progress often enough, unfortunately. Although, that is to be expected with the Roguelite tag that comes with the game.

Is Mighty Quest Rogue Palace worth a try?

Netflix Games are notably free of in-app purchases and are positioned as premium games as part of your Netflix subscription. That makes Mighty Quest Rogue Palace a worthwhile game if you already have a valid Netflix subscription, since you aren’t paying anything extra and are getting a top-notch mobile game for it. Expectedly, there are no in-app purchases, so you can enjoy the entirety of the game from the get-go.

The platform also recently brought Raji: An Ancient Epic to Android and iOS and is working closely with developers to build on the catalogue of mobile games for its subscribers. After Valiant Hearts: Coming Home and Mighty Quest Rogue Pałace, Ubisoft is also working on an Assassin’s Creed title for Netflix Games, although no release date for that has been announced yet.

Microsoft Adds Bing AI Chatbot to SwiftKey Keyboard on Android and iOS: All Details

Microsoft SwiftKey keyboard app is getting the new AI-powered Bing chat search engine based on the Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) technology. With this latest integration, users can chat with the bot directly from their mobile keyboard, customise their texts and search for things without swapping between apps. Bing offers three new key features on SwiftKey — Chat, Search, and Tone. With the Chat feature, users can go for detailed queries and the Search allows them to quickly explore the Web from the keyboard. The Tone functionality aims to improve communication and lets users tailor texts with AI to fit any situation. Microsoft earlier released Bing and Edge browser apps for smartphones

On Thursday, Microsoft announced the addition of AI-powered Bing to the SwiftKey keyboard app, via a blogpost. With this update, Android and iOS users will get access to the unique features of Bing Chat. The latest Microsoft SwiftKey 3.0.1 update is rolling out via App Store. Also, Bing is available via the Microsoft Start app for select users as well.

As mentioned, Bing comes with Chat, Search, and Tone options and they can be accessed from the Bing icon displayed on top of the keyboard. The Chat feature can be put in to make detailed queries. For instance, Microsoft says it will be useful to respond with a clever pun to someone’s message and text some new friends to propose a good local restaurant.

SwiftKey’s Tone feature can be used to communicate more effectively by using AI to customise the in-progress text to fit any situation. It will help users to frame their sentences to sound more professional, casual, polite, or concise enough for a social post.

The Search functionality allows users to quickly search the Web from their keyboard, without switching apps. This can be useful when a user is chatting with a friend and mid-conversation, they want to look up relevant information like the weather, restaurants nearby, or stock prices.

Search is open for all users, but to access the Tone and Chat sections, users will have to sign up to their Microsoft account. To avail of the latest functionality, SwiftKey should be set as the primary keyboard on Android and iOS.

iOS 15.7.5 Update with Security Patches Reportedly Released for Older iPhone, iPad; All Details

Apple, that lays an imperative focus on securing its ecosystem with a bundle of privacy features, is reportedly rolling out a fresh software upgrade for older iPhone and iPad models. The iOS 15.7.5 update is being released to fix points of vulnerabilities in the core tech system of the devices. Apple has reportedly hinted that these vulnerabilities may have been exploited in the past, but this update would fix that right up.

The release of iOS 15.7.5 comes just one week after Apple deployed the 15.7.4 updated. Both of these updates are loaded with security patches. The latest update focuses on securing the IOSurfaceAccelerator as well as its WebKit vulnerabilities in older iPhone and iPad models. As per a report by 9To5Mac, these patches will prevent arbitrary code executions by maliciously designed web content and apps.

Tech tipster Aaron Zollo with over 100,000 Twitter followers, shared an image of this upgrade being rolled out on the micro-blogging platform.

Apple devices including all models of iPhone 6s, iPhone 7, iPhone SE, iPad Air 2, iPad mini (4th generation), and iPod touch (7th generation) are eligible to get this update.

The company recommends that users download and install this update immediately.

According to DemandSage, the iPhone has clocked over 1.5 billion users around the world as of 2023. Apple’s total net sales reached $394.33 billion in 2022, recording a 2.44 percent YoY increase from 2021.

In order to maintain its hefty sales figures, the tech giant keeps its device lineup up to date. At the moment, Apple is also rolling out the macOS Big Sur 11.7.6 (20G1231) as well as macOS Monterey 12.6.5 (21G531) for its laptops, the 9To5Mac report added.

The company is also looking to expand its retail presence in different parts of the world. In India, for instance, Apple is inaugurating its first two Apple Stores in Mumbai and Delhi later this month.

Apple customers in India can experience the latest Apple product lineup and avail of personalised service and support from the new stores.

Asphalt 9: Legends has added the brand-new Lamborghini Revuelto to its already impressive roster of supercars. The Italian manufacturer’s newest flagship V12 hybrid car was introduced on Thursday, March 30, making Asphalt 9: Legends the first and only video game for now to feature it. Starting today, players can participate in an exclusive challenge to add the new sports car to their in-game garage, simply after completing the first stage. The event ends on April 27 and promises additional liveries and rewards to those who continue playing long after unlocking the Lamborghini Revuelto. Developer Gameloft has also noted chances of winning ‘surprise real-world prizes’ from Lamborghini as well.

“The launch of a new flagship Lamborghini is always an exciting time for car lovers around the world. We couldn’t be more excited by yesterday’s announcement since we’ve also been able to launch a digital version of the Lamborghini Revuelto in Asphalt 9: Legends,” Ignacio Marín, Asphalt 9 Game Manager, Gameloft said in a prepared statement. “Our longstanding partnership with the company gave us unprecedented access to internal documentation to prepare for this reveal, and we’re confident players are going to love getting behind the digital wheel of this incredible — and faithfully recreated — vehicle.” To celebrate the release, studio Gameloft also dropped a cinematic trailer featuring glamour shots of the vehicle, as it cruises through the streets. There are plenty of customisation options as well, letting you swap out wheel rims, paint jobs, and spoilers to compete in solo and online multiplayer across several in-game locations around the world — be it the landslides of the Himalayas or the tornadoes in the American wilderness.

A Career Mode is included as well, spanning 60 seasons across 900 events, in addition to some story-driven scenarios that pit you against skilled racers in Asphalt 9: Legends or have you compete against racers from your Club to dominate the leaderboard. The game also features excellent immersion, thanks to HDR rendering, realistic reflection and particle effects, and a suave soundtrack.

Asphalt 9: Legends is available to download for free on the App Store, Google Play Store, Microsoft Store, and Steam on PC. The new Lamborghini Revuleto will be available on the Nintendo Switch at a later date.

Sid Meier’s Railroads Coming to iOS, Android on April 5, Feral Interactive Working on Port

Sid Meier’s Railroads, originally released for PC in 2006, in coming to iOS and Android in April. The popular classic railroad business simulation game is being ported to mobile platforms by Feral Interactive, known for its work on porting games such as Grid Autosport and Tropico to mobile platforms. Railroads is the final instalment of the Railroad Tycoon series by renowned video game designer and producer Sid Meier, and fits in well with Feral Interactive’s approach to bringing popular simulation games to mobile platforms.

London, UK-based Feral Interactive, a specialist in porting games to different platforms (primarily MacOS, Android, and iOS), has announced that Sid Meier’s Railroads will release on iOS and Android on April 5. The game is already up for pre-registration on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store, and will be available to download starting April 5.

The popular tycoon game puts the player in charge of a railroad company, responsible for connecting various towns to transport both passengers and goods. The game is focused on economic development, with the player expected to help industrial growth by connecting locations according to demand and supply factors.

Many of the scenarios are set in historical eras and locations where railroad development actually took place and aided the economy and industry at the time, including the UK, Europe, and parts of the US. The player also sometimes takes on the identity of real-life railway tycoons and industrialists of the past, such as Cornelius Vanderbilt and J.P. Morgan.

While much of Feral Interactive’s work is on bringing Windows games to MacOS, the developer has also worked to bring titles such as Grid Autosport and Tropico (largely based on Tropico 3) to iOS and Android.
