BGMI 2.8 Update Is Now Live: Zombies Edge Mode, Hoverboard, More

Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) has launched its new 2.8 update, bringing a zombie-themed game mode called ‘Zombie’s Edge.’ The update is available for free download now, on Android and iOS, with the mode being unlocked on the Erangel, Livik, and Miramar maps. The Aerolith Lab and its surrounding areas serve as the hotspot during the event, teeming with countless ‘mutants’ to kill, alongside an occasional Berserker and Ripper variants, which will prove more challenging. The former is of a muscular stature, whose right arm can seamlessly transform between a sharp blade and an armoured fist. Meanwhile, the Ripper is slender and uses its agility to close in and perform slash attacks.

Bear in mind that Zombie’s Edge is the same game mode introduced on the international PUBG Mobile version, last month. It’s unclear what changes have been made to the India-exclusive BGMI, but judging by the patch notes, they appear exactly the same. Update 2.8 also introduces Mutation Gauntlets, which can be equipped to drastically enhance gameplay — there’s a slam attack that pretty much one-shots zombies and a Great Smash moveset that’s similar to Doomfist’s ultimate from Overwatch 2. Upon activating it, the player leaps up into the air to choose a landing point, then slams down dealing heavy, AOE damage. Indeed, there’s a Ripper version of the gauntlet as well, which adds a dash move and the ability to perform slashes.

All of this ties into the infection’s core, the aforementioned Aerolith Lab, which is best described as a living, towering organism that’s absorbing the undead to get stronger. Once the process is complete, it spawns a ‘Rage’ Berserker, a formidable mutant, that can be bested to gain tonnes of loot. The update also brings the Maglev Hoverboard, which enables fast traversal across both land and water bodies, alongside a ‘Halloweeks’ update, casting the area with carved pumpkins, disco lights, and dancing mutants.

For the uninitiated, BGMI came into the scene soon after the Indian government banned the uber-popular PUBG Mobile due to privacy and security concerns. BGMI was just recently unbanned in May, following a 10-month period, with developer Krafton limiting the number of hours one could play and adding a parental verification system for in-game purchases. The re-launch also brought the new Nusa map, a small tropical zone that’s laden with ziplines and a Super Recall feature that brought back dead teammates into the game. At the time, the game was granted a three-month ‘trial approval’ by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), though it’s unclear whether the band is completely lifted now.

Battlegrounds Mobile India is available to play on Android and Apple iOS devices.

BGMI Available to Download via Google Play Store, Will Be Playable Starting May 29: Details

BGMI — or Battlegrounds Mobile India — is now available to download via the Google Play store in India. The game, which was banned by the government of India last year, can be preloaded on Android smartphones before it is re-launched in India next week. Developer Krafton has confirmed that the game will be playable in India starting on May 29. The popular battle royale game has been granted a three-month “trial approval” in India, MoS IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar said earlier this month.

Krafton announced on Saturday that Battlegrounds Mobile India was available to preload via the Google Play store. While the game can be download — or updated, if it was previously installed — it won’t playable until May 29, when the game is re–launched. Meanwhile, iOS users do not currently have the option to preload the game on their smartphones. Gadgets 360 was able to confirm that the game was available to download via the Play Store.

Earlier this month, Krafton confirmed that BGMI would soon be available in India, nearly a year after it was banned in July last year. The game quickly hit the 100 million user mark in the country a year after it was launched in 2021 as the successor to the popular PUBG Mobile — one of many apps and games that remain banned in the country.

The game was available to download for some Android users over the past week, but those who downloaded the game reported that it was not functional and the app displayed an error that the servers were not online. The game is also said to have made adjustments including the addition of restrictions on play time, while the colour of blood has been changed from red to blue or greed.

It is worth noting that BGMI has currently been granted a three-month “trial approval” to operate in the country, according to MoS IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar. Krafton has complied with issues of server locations and data security, and the government will keep a close watch on other issues like user harm and addiction over the next three months before a decision is taken, he added.

BGMI Returning to India ‘Soon’ After 10-Month Ban, Krafton Confirms

Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) is coming back and will be available for download soon in the country. Korean publisher Krafton has confirmed that the Indian government has allowed them to resume operations of the uber-popular battle-royale game, following its ban in July last year, owing to privacy and security concerns. The game was completely removed from both Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store under Section 69 of the IT Act — in turn affecting the mobile e-sports scene in the country. BGMI is now the first app to return to India, among the hundreds of apps the government banned within the past couple of years.

“We are highly grateful to the Indian authorities for allowing us to resume operations of Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI). We would like to extend our gratitude to our Indian gaming community for their support and patience over the past few months,” Sean Hyunil Sohn, CEO, Krafton India said in a press release. “We are excited to announce that Battlegrounds Mobile India will be available for download soon and we cannot wait to welcome you back to our platform.” He also touched upon the remarkable milestones the game achieved in the country, surpassing 100 million users within a year of its launch in July 2021.

Following PUBG Mobile’s ban, BGMI, an India-exclusive version of the game popped into the scene, rekindling the e-sports ecosystem in the country with numerous official and unofficial events, including a broadcast on mainstream television. Dubbed the ‘Masters Series,’ the tournament was telecast live on Star Sports 2 last year, with Global Esports lifting the trophy. “Krafton is a responsible South Korean organisation that abides by the law and has put in place several measures to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations,” Vibhor Kukreti, Head Government Affairs, Krafton India said in a prepared statement. “We strongly encourage our users to prioritize their well-being and follow responsible gaming practices.”

That last sentence is worth taking into consideration since a report from News18 suggests that BGMI will be back initially for three months only — a trial period of sorts, as the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) continues monitoring its activity and ensuring it doesn’t violate any rules set by the Indian government. Moreover, the game is said to be making a return with several adjustments, including a set time limit to restrict the number of hours one could play, alongside changes to the gore effects. While previously, players could change the colour of blood to blue or green via the in-game settings, the change is expected to be permanent/ default.

Back in March, MeitY also removed Dead by Daylight Mobile, the co-op survival horror game from Behaviour Interactive, from Indian mobile storefronts. No explicit reason was given, albeit one could assume it had to do with the game’s publisher NetEase, which is a Chinese firm responsible for distributing the title within Southeast Asia, Japan, and Korea. As mentioned before, the government previously banned several Chinese apps over security concerns.

Currently, there are no set release details for Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), but we can expect it to be available on Android and iOS, as before.

Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) Disappears from Google Play, Apple App Store Following Government Order

Battlegrounds Mobile India, better known as BGMI, has disappeared from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store following a government order. Those who already have it installed on their devices can still play the game, at least for now. The removal happened without warning late on Thursday evening, leaving many users surprised. However, Google has now confirmed that it received a government order directing it to delist the popular online game. BGMI was launched in India by Krafton as a response to the government banning multiple Chinese apps including the then-popular Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) due to security risks. A similar game, Garena Free Fire, was also banned in February this year.

As #BGMI and #BGMIban started trending on Twitter, rumours and speculation about possible reasons for a ban included connections to recent allegations of video games being connected to violent incidents, and new concerns about data privacy and online security. New State Mobile, which is published as a separate app by Krafton, remains available.

According to Reuters, a Google spokesperson has confirmed that the removal was a result of a government order. Details of the order are awaited. 

Developer Krafton claims to have invested over $100 million to develop BGMI and an esports ecosystem in India over the past few years. The company also recently announced that BGMI has surpassed 100 million registered users. At that time, Krafton CEO Changhan Kim had said “India is an important market for Krafton. We are positive about the opportunities in the country and are committed to create a robust gaming ecosystem. Our focus is pivoted towards constantly elevating the mobile gaming experience for our growing community and invest in the flourishing start-up landscape here”
