WWDC 2023 is set to begin today, and the Cupertino company will begin its annual Worldwide Developers Conference with a keynote event that typically showcases the company’s software advancements and updates to iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS. This year, the iPhone maker is also reportedly planning to unveil Apple Reality Pro, its first mixed reality headset, that will run on a new xrOS operating system and feature both augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies. The company is also tipped to launch new Mac models during the WWDC presentation.

Apple has announced that the WWDC keynote event will begin at 10am PT (10:30pm IST) today, at Apple Park in California. The in-person event will also be livestreamed via the Apple.com website and YouTube. The keynote can also be viewed from the Apple TV app and the Apple Developer app. You can also watch the livestream from the player embedded below.

What to expect from WWDC 2023

Apple usually showcases updates for its devices at WWDC, and the firm is expected to reveal details of iOS 17, iPadOS 17, macOS 14, tvOS 17, and watchOS 10 at the keynote event. The company is also rumoured to show off its highly anticipated Apple Reality Pro mixed reality headset today. Apple may also announce new MacBook and Mac Pro models at the event, according to recent reports.

Apple Reality Pro

While Apple hasn’t announced any plans to launch a mixed reality headset, several leaks and rumours have suggested that the company is preparing to launch a device that uses both AR and VR technology and runs on a new xrOS operating system. It is said to bear a $3,000 (roughly Rs. 2,47,500) price tag and feature high-resolution Micro OLED displays with over 5,000 nits of peak brightness and could be powered by an externally attached battery pack.

iOS 17 and watchOS 10

According to recent reports, iOS 17 will allow an iPhone to turn into a smart display when connected to a charger. The update is also expected to bring features aimed at mental wellbeing, including a journaling app. The company’s Wallet and Health apps are also tipped to get a fresh coat of paint.

iOS 17 is also expected to be the first version of the operating system that allows customers to install applications outside the App Store, a functionality that is expected to be enabled in the EU. Meanwhile, watchOS 10 is expected to introduce major design changes, including a new widget-focussed interface that displays even more information at a glance without moving around the interface.

macOS 14, iPadOS and tvOS 17

Unlike iOS 17 and watchOS 10, there aren’t many reports to suggest major changes headed to Apple’s operating systems for Mac, iPad, and Apple TV. Instead, these updates could bring incremental feature updates and tweaks to improve performance and user experience on these devices.

New Mac hardware

Apple is said to be planning to announce new Mac models during its WWDC presentation. These include a new 15-inch MacBook Air that is powered by an M2 chip. We can also expect to see a new Mac Pro model, the first one in the series to be powered by an Apple Silicon chip, and the first update to the powerful computer that was announced at WWDC 2019.

Apple Reality Pro Headset Will Feature External Display Showing Facial Expressions of User: Mark Gurman

Apple is expected to show off its long-rumoured AR/VR headset at Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2023 in June first week. Now, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman’s latest predictions add more credibility to this rumour, with the industry analyst claiming that the announcement could be one of Apple CEO Tim Cook’s last big swings as Apple CEO and will affect his legacy. The Apple Reality Pro — the purported first mixed reality headset from the Cupertino-based company, is said to feature an external display that shows facial expressions. It is expected to run on a new xrOS operating system and cost about $3,000 (roughly Rs. 2,50,000).

In his weekly Power On newsletter on Thursday (May 18), Mark Gurman says that Apple’s wearable mixed reality headset will be equipped with an outward-facing display. This external display will keep the wearers engaged with the real world by displaying their eye movements and facial expressions. Apple reportedly considers this feature as a key differentiator from enclosed VR headsets.

Citing a person familiar with the device, Gurman states that the exterior screens would allow people to interact with a headset wearer without feeling as if they’re talking to a robot.

According to Gurman, the debut of the long-awaited mixed reality headset could be one of Tim Cook’s last big swings as Apple CEO. It would either give him another major achievement or underscore the narrative that the company’s biggest victories were initiated under Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.

Apple’s mixed reality headset, which has been in development for over seven years is said to have deviated far from Cook’s initial vision. It could resemble a pair of ski goggles and might include a separate battery pack. The battery may look like an iPhone-size pack attached by a power cord. The Apple Reality Pro is expected to run on a new xrOS operating system and cost about $3,000.

It could be able to work as an external Mac monitor and could allow users to make multiperson video calls. Apple is reportedly working with software and game developers, as well as other entertainment companies to create content for the device once it goes official.

While outlining the challenges the company faced in developing its mixed-reality headset, Gurman states that the iPhone maker’s much-expected augmented reality (AR) glasses are still at least four years away from hitting shelves.

Apple is yet to acknowledge the development of the Reality Pro headset. The company is said to use its M2 processor with 16GB of memory for the mixed-reality headset. Apple is expected to break its silence about the existence of the headset during the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) starting June 5.

Apple AR/VR Headset Mass Production Delayed to Late Q3: Ming-Chi Kuo

Apple is expected to launch its first AR/VR headset in 2023 and a more affordable version of the same in 2024 or 2025. There have been several reports and speculation surrounding the product and its features since it will be the first of its kind by the Cupertino-based tech giant. The AR/VR headset was expected to be unveiled at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2023 being held from June 5 to June 9. However, a recent report hinted at an internal disagreement at the company regarding the wearable device. An analyst now suggests that the mass production of the device has been pushed to Q3 of 2023.

According to notable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple’s AR/VR headset is likely to be delayed yet again. Kuo now thinks the supply chain will massively increase assembly for the device in the mid-to-late third quarter of this year, which is in the August-September time frame.

Due to the delay, Kuo says that only 200,000 to 300,000 units will be assembled and shipped this year, down from initial expectations of more than 500,000 units. According to Kuo, Apple is not too ambitious about the headset’s profits due to its high price, reported to be around $3,000 (roughly Rs. 2,48,000), in the time of an economic downturn. Kuo adds that Apple has also compromised on some specifications, such as its weight target, as it ramps up production.

Kuo also poses the question of whether the mass production delays will result in a postponement of the headset’s official announcement. Bloomberg suggested in an earlier report that the headset will be launched in June, at the company’s annual WWDC event. With the recent announcement of the WWDC 2023 dates, the expectation of the AR/VR headset, likely to be named Apple Reality Pro, being unveiled at the conference became firmer.

A couple of recent reports have suggested that the Cupertino headquarters were in disagreements about some particulars of the AR/VR headset. The company could use its proprietary Apple silicon chipsets that they use for MacBooks, and launch the headset as a standalone device. Apple could also launch it as a ‘copresence’ device that will enable users to engage in augmented reality videoconferencing and meetings.

Realme might not want the Mini Capsule to be the defining feature of the Realme C55, but will it end up being one of the phone’s most talked-about hardware specifications? Apple’s Mixed Reality Headsets Could Allow Wearers to See Invisible Things Like Fires, Gas Leaks: Report

Apple’s new patent application suggest that its mixed reality (MR) headset could allow users to view invisible things, as per a report. It highlights that users might be able to see gas leaks and Wi-Fi signals. The MR headset will reportedly use additional signals to enable this feature. It could also allow musicians to tune their instruments by showing the sound waves. It might track heat patterns as well, which could help in detecting possible fires. By creating an augmented reality (AR) overlay, the headset could reportedly also allow wearers to see inside cupboards.

According to a report by Patently Apple, a new patent application from the Cupertino tech giant reveals that the company’s MR headset could allow users to view things that are invisible to naked eyes. The rumoured headset could reportedly help wearers in detecting gas leaks and Wi-Fi signals for adjusting the placement of the router.

The report suggests that the MR headset from Apple will also track heat patterns to detect possible fires around the wearers to ensure safety. It is said to use infrared sensor to allow wearers to see heat, which could help them detect fires through walls. The headset reportedly creates an overlay over the AR view of the location the user is in to display the invisible things.

As per the report, it will also visualise the sound waves to help musicians tune their instruments. It is said to create an overlay over the sine wave for the correct note. The rumoured Apple headset is said to let wearers see behind closed cupboard doors by creating an AR overlay. It will reportedly match the stored video from the time its user opens a cupboard with their current view and position.

Recently, it was reported that Apple could launch its MR headset in 2023. The company is said to be working on three new headsets codenamed N301, N602, and N421. The first MR headset from the company will reportedly be called Apple Reality Pro, which is expected to compete with Facebook’s upcoming AR-VR headset.

Apple Reality Pro May Launch as Company’s First Mixed Reality Headset in 2023: Report

Apple could launch its mixed reality (MR) headsets in 2023, according to a report. The Cupertino tech giant is reportedly working on three new headsets codenamed N301, N602, and N421. The first MR headset will reportedly be called Apple Reality Pro, which is said to compete with Facebook’s upcoming augmented reality (AR) – virtual reality (VR) headset. The report highlighted that the headsets will not be launched at the ‘Far Out’ event. As per a recent report, Apple has submitted application for trademarks “Reality One” and “Reality Pro”.

According to a report by 9To5Mac citing Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter, Apple is working on three new AR-VR headsets codenamed N301, N602, and N421. The Cupertino tech giant is said to first launch the Apple Reality Pro, which could be the MR headset. It will reportedly compete with Facebook’s upcoming AR-VR headset.

The company will reportedly unveil the Apple Reality Pro in 2023. A light-weight AR version of the headset is said to be launched in later years. The N602 will reportedly succeed the Apple Reality Pro headset, but it will be priced lower than the first MR headset. The codename N421 reportedly belongs to Apple’s rumoured AR glasses. The report further highlighted that Gurman doesn’t expect Apple to make an announcement regarding the AR-VR headsets and glasses at the ‘Far Out’ event, which will be held on September 7.

As per a previous report, trademark applications for “Reality One”, “Reality Pro”, and “Reality Processor” were submitted by a shell company called Immersive Health Solutions LLC. The company is said to be Apple’s shell company, which had reportedly filed the trademark application for RealityOS.

In June, well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had predicted that Apple could start EVT testing for its MR headset in or around the third quarter of this year. Kuo added that the company is expected to hold a special media event later, which could be hosted in January next year.
