Netflix Games Brings Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition to Android, iOS Phones

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is now available on both iOS and Android mobile platforms. It bundles three classic games — Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. For all Netflix subscribers, the games are free to play. Rockstar Games confirmed that users without a Netflix subscription can also now play the games on their smartphones. They will be required to buy the games on Play Store or App Store.

In a press release, Grand Theft Auto developer Rockstar Games confirmed on Thursday that Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition was available to play on mobile platforms for free to all Netflix subscribers, as well as other iOS and Android users. The mobile versions of the three classic games claim to come with significant visual and gameplay improvements.

The announcement adds that the three games concerned, Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, can be downloaded and purchased individually on smartphones. Among several other improvements and features, one is a new Classic Lighting mode, the developer revealed. It is said to restore “the look and feel of the sky in the original games.” The download links for the games are attached to the release.

Netflix Games previously confirmed the arrival of this bundle. Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is also available for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Notably, Rockstar Games recently released the trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6 which is confirmed to launch in 2025. It will be available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X. The new trailer introduces us to Lucia and Jason, the game’s crime couple protagonists and also shows us Vice City, a fictionalised version of Miami where the game is set.

Netflix Games to Add Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – the Definitive Edition on Mobile Platforms Next Month

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, the remastered bundle that contains three iconic GTA titles from Rockstar Games, is coming to Netflix, the streamer announced Wednesday. Starting December 14, Netflix subscribers will get access to the trilogy on mobile via App Store, Google Play, and within the Netflix app. Released November 11, 2021, for PC and consoles, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition brings together three classic games — Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas — with visual, gameplay and quality of life improvements. While the original games are available on both iOS and Android, this marks the first time the remastered trilogy is heading to the mobile platform.

Netflix subscribers can now pre-register to play the trilogy, the platform said in its announcement. All three titles in the remastered bundle are updated for mobile and will feature the enhancements present in the console version.

The announcement comes right in time for the much-awaited trailer release for Grand Theft Auto 6. Earlier this month, publisher Rockstar Games confirmed that it would finally reveal a trailer for GTA 6. Perhaps the most eagerly awaited video game in history, Grand Theft Auto 6 has spent years in development and dodged multiple leaks — including a major hack that outed in-development gameplay footage from the upcoming title.

Last month, Netflix was reported to be looking to add a Grand Theft Auto title to its games portfolio. The streaming platform had held discussions with Rockstar parent Take-Two Interactive over plans to release a GTA title for its catalogue via a licensing deal. Initially believed to be a new mobile GTA title, the talks seemed to have led to the remastered trilogy arriving on mobile.

Mobile versions of mainline GTA titles, which were later remastered for the trilogy bundle, already exist on both Android and iOS. Grand Theft Auto 3, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas are available to download as part of the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy bundle on Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store. To compare, the app bundle costs Rs. 1,199 on the former. With the mobile release of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, all Netflix subscribers will be able to play the three GTA titles, with upgrades to boot, for free.

Netflix is intent on adding more value to its subscription and is focussed on adding higher quality titles to its games service. Netflix Games is now a growing catalogue of over 80 mobile games across genres and has added acclaimed new mobile titles like Laya’s Horizon and Oxenfree II: Lost Signals this year. The streamer also intends to offer games beyond mobile, with game streaming being tested on PC, Mac and smart TVs.

Earlier this month, the streaming giant announced new games based on in its hit shows Money Heist, Shadow and Bone, The Dragon Prince, and more.

In India, a mobile-only Netflix subscription begins at Rs. 149 per month. The Basic plan, which offers streaming at a reduced 720p resolution comes in at Rs. 199 per month, while the Standard plan with full-HD streaming costs Rs. 499 a month. The top tier Premium plan is priced at Rs. 649 and offers 4K, HDR streaming quality.

Grand Theft Auto 6, Rockstar Games’ long-awaited sequel to 2013’s Grand Theft Auto 5, has left gamers parched, with no official announcement about its release from the developers. If you’ve been waiting for the next GTA title, however, there might be good news for you. It’s not GTA 6, but a new report claims that streaming giant Netflix is looking to add a Grand Theft Auto title to its games portfolio. There are no details on the game itself or its launch date, but a GTA release on the Netflix Games platform would likely be a mobile title.

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Netflix is planning to license the lucrative GTA franchise for a future release on its Netflix Games service. The report mentions that the streamer has held discussions with Rockstar parent Take-Two Interactive over plans to release a GTA title for its catalogue via a licensing deal. No details about the deal or the type of game planned for release are available just yet.

An active Netflix subscription grants you access to its Netflix Games service, a growing catalogue of games available to play on mobile and tablets. The streamer has recently also started testing its games on more devices. A new GTA title on Netflix Games would thus likely be a mobile title. It’s worth noting that mobile versions of mainline GTA titles already exist on both Android and iOS. The streamer will reportedly also add games based on its hit shows, with Squid Game and Wednesday mobile games arriving in the coming months. Back in July, the company added The Queen’s Gambit Chess, based on its popular The Queen’s Gambit series starring Anya Taylor-Joy, to Netflix Games service on both Android and iOS.

Meanwhile, in August, Netflix announced that select subscribers in the US and Canada would be able to cloud stream a section of games from its portfolio on their TVs. Tests for game streaming on PC and Mac have also begun, with two games — Night School Studios’ Oxenfree and Molehew’s Mining Adventure — included in the testing period. Netflix subscribers will be able to use their phone as a controller, with a dedicated Netflix Game Controller app available to download on the App Store.

Netflix added two games to its library in October, bringing Paladin Studios’ Nailed It! Baking Bash and Thunder Lotus Games’ Spiritfarer to the service. Nailed It! is an arcade cooking game in the vein of Overcooked, while Spiritfarer is an adventure platformer with shipbuilding at its core.

While there’s no release timeline for the GTA title coming to Netflix, a GTA 6 announcement is perhaps even further away. Rockstar is hard on work on the next mainline GTA title, which we know will be set in Miami’s Vice City and will feature two playable protagonists, Lucia and Jason.

Mighty Quest Rogue Palace, the sequel to The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot, is out now on Netflix Games on iOS and Android mobile devices. Part of Netflix’s significant expansion plans for gaming in 2023, Mighty Quest Rogue Palace has been developed by Ubisoft and is exclusive to the Netflix Games platform on iOS and Android, for now. The game is a hack-and-slash action and adventure title that puts you in charge of a band of heroes tasked with freeing the sleeping and nightmare-ridden mind of a king. The game can be downloaded now on supported devices.

Mighty Quest Rogue Palace: How to play

As with other Netflix Games titles, Mighty Quest Rogue Palace is free to play – if you have a valid Netflix subscription. The popular international streaming platform has been working to establish itself as a provider of not just movies and TV shows, but also mobile games, in a bid to establish itself as an entertainment hub for all kinds of recreational content. Netflix Games titles can be downloaded as separate apps on iOS and Android, but will need you to log in to your Netflix account or be already logged in through the main Netflix mobile app on the same device.

Mighty Quest Rogue Palace: First impressions

Developed by Ubisoft, Mighty Quest Rogue Palace puts you in charge of hero Lord Logan, returning to the palace of the king. Unfortunately, the palace has been overrun by a ‘void’ of sorts, which has swallowed the entire kingdom save for the palace and a few of its occupants, which interestingly includes a royal cat and an entirely useless non-playable character with a wooden bucket on his head, whose only job is to crack silly jokes.

I did have a chance to play Mighty Quest Rogue Palace for a bit ahead of its public release. The game starts off a bit confusing, especially if, like me, you aren’t familiar with the series’ previous instalment, The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot. The learning curve isn’t difficult in itself, but you might spend a few minutes initially just aimlessly slashing away at enemies without properly understanding the point of it all.

Fortunately, the core gameplay is quite easy to get the hang of, since Rogue Palace is, at its heart, a hack-and-slash action game with Roguelike elements that involves attacking and dispatching numerous enemies. That said, you’ll have to keep an eye on your own health, build up your skillset, learn when it’s best to use particular skills, and upgrade your gear and abilities along the way.

The actual action takes place in the mind of the king, as he is locked in an endless slumber while the ‘void’ surrounds his palace. The objective of Mighty Quest Rogue Palace is to enter the king’s mind, free all the heroes, defeat all the monsters and bosses occupying parts of the mind, and eventually banish the void to wake the king and rescue the kingdom. Trips into the king’s mind don’t eliminate the heroes even after all health is drained; you simply return to the palace in the ‘real’ world to upgrade your abilities and gear, and go again.

While the gameplay of Mighty Quest Rogue Palace is fun, I found the long room-clearing procedures a bit repetitive. You’ll find yourself often going through the same rooms and fighting the same bosses as you attempt to progress, and defeat sends you back to the beginning to try again. Apart from improving the Hero’s skills, you’ll also find yourself learning and improving along the way, but that doesn’t let you save progress often enough, unfortunately. Although, that is to be expected with the Roguelite tag that comes with the game.

Is Mighty Quest Rogue Palace worth a try?

Netflix Games are notably free of in-app purchases and are positioned as premium games as part of your Netflix subscription. That makes Mighty Quest Rogue Palace a worthwhile game if you already have a valid Netflix subscription, since you aren’t paying anything extra and are getting a top-notch mobile game for it. Expectedly, there are no in-app purchases, so you can enjoy the entirety of the game from the get-go.

The platform also recently brought Raji: An Ancient Epic to Android and iOS and is working closely with developers to build on the catalogue of mobile games for its subscribers. After Valiant Hearts: Coming Home and Mighty Quest Rogue Pałace, Ubisoft is also working on an Assassin’s Creed title for Netflix Games, although no release date for that has been announced yet.

Netflix Bets Big on Games, to Launch 40 New Titles in 2023 on iOS and Android

As one of the biggest streaming services in the world, Netflix is well known for its massive catalogue of original and licensed movie and TV series content. However, many may not be aware that Netflix is also a subscription game service for mobile games since November 2021. Interestingly, this does not require anything more than your standard Netflix subscription, with all paid subscribers gaining access to the full catalogue of mobile games, available on iOS and Android. For 2023, Netflix is betting big on its gaming service, with major expansion plans to build on its existing catalogue, and is working with developers such as Ubisoft and Super Evil Megacorp, to bring 40 new titles to the service.

New releases on Netflix Games in 2023 and beyond

The global streaming platform recently announced that it is planning to bring 40 new games to its platform in 2023. As of now, the service has launched 55 games since November 2021, and has a total of 70 games in development with external partners. Notable among these are Terra Nil, a reverse city-builder which will be launching on March 28, and Mighty Quest: Rogue Palace from Ubisoft, which will release on April 18. Assassin’s Creed fans can also expect a mobile game from the franchise to come to Netflix games soon.

Monument Valley 1 and 2 are confirmed to be coming to Netflix Games in 2024

 

Unlike some of Netflix’s earlier titles such as Too Hot to Handle: Love is a Game and Narcos: Cartel Wars Unlimited which are based on existing Netflix titles, many of the upcoming games are not in any way linked to movies or TV shows on the streaming platform. Netflix hopes to establish itself a major games publisher for mobile platforms, and is not really limiting itself to using its games as extensions to its existing streaming content, as per Leanne Loombe, Vice President of External Games at Netflix.

Notably, the games service is also planning to bring existing premium titles under its subscription banner. Netflix is working with UsTwo Games to bring Monument Valley and Monument Valley 2 to its service in 2024. All of this will see Netflix go up against established players in the gaming subscription space such as Apple Arcade and Google Play Pass, but with the notable advantage on being available on both iOS and Android.

How does Netflix Games work?

Netflix Games are accessible as regular apps on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, and are installed on your smartphone or tablet independent of the Netflix app. That said, you can use the Netflix app on iOS or Android to find games, and you’ll be redirected to the app marketplace to download the app. As of now, the Netflix app does not let you play any of the games within it, and is only used to help you discover titles of interest.

While the game apps themselves are free to download, you do need an active Netflix subscription to actually be able to access and play the games. If you’re logged in on the Netflix app on the same device, this process is seamless, with the game working normally using your existing credentials.

Importantly, Netflix Games features premium games that are fully unlocked and can be played for free within the subscription service; there are no in-app purchases beyond the actual cost of the Netflix subscription in any of the games, similar to how Apple and Google operate their subscription-based gaming services.

For now, Netflix Games are limited to mobile platforms. However, the company has confirmed that it is working on its own cloud gaming service, which could then bring its games onto many more devices beyond smartphones and tablets. This is still some time away, and Netflix has confirmed that its immediate plans for gaming will remain focused on mobile platforms.

Netflix Plans to Expand Games Catalogue to Include Over 50 Titles by Year End: Report

Netflix may not be earning huge profits, but the streaming service is already experimenting ways to increase user traffic on its gaming service, which it launched last year. Back in November 2021, the OTT platform introduced 5 gaming titles, including Stranger Things, to its Games catalogue. The Netflix Games catalogue allows subscribers to download and play select games, on Android and iOS, for free. Just six months after the launch of the service, Netflix already has 18 games on its catalogue. Now, by the end of 2022, the platform is planning to expand the list of games to over 50, reports The Washington Post.

The report has not revealed the names of any of the games that will be added in the list. The upcoming titles are said to be still under wraps, with buzz around the possible names. However, the streaming service made an announcement a few days back to confirm the development around a mobile game and a TV show based on the Exploding Kittens board game. The game is all set to feature on the platform next month, while the adult animated comedy series will release in 2023.

The news around Netflix‘s expansion of its Games catalogue comes at a time when the streaming giant reported the loss of 200,000 subscribers in its first quarter. The Russian invasion of Ukraine resulted in Netflix losing 700,000 members due to suspension of services.

To cope up with the loss, the OTT platform is offering lower-priced subscription fee with advertising, quite similar to its rivals HBO Max and Disney+. Amid tough competition and password sharing issues, Netflix has now also fixed its eyes on the gaming service to earn huge profits in the market and increase its share value.

Netflix’s current gaming catalogue includes titles like Into the Dead 2: Unleashed, Asphalt Xtreme, Card Blast, Dungeon Dwarves, Knittens, Stranger Things 3: The Game, and Stranger Things: 1984 among others.

Apart from these, it also hosts a daily trivia show called Trivia Quest that tests its viewer’s knowledge through a new quiz every day with 24 questions.
