India Second Largest Phone Maker With 2 Billion ‘Made in India’ Shipments Between 2014 and 2022: Counterpoint

India’s mobile phone manufacturing industry reportedly produced over 2 billion mobile phones cumulatively between 2014 and 2022, making it the second-largest mobile manufacturing country in the world. This growth can likely be attributed to a number of factors, including the government’s Make in India initiative, which has provided incentives for local manufacturing, and the increasing demand for mobile phones in India. 

According to a report by Counterpoint Research, between 2014 and 2022, India’s mobile phone production grew at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 23 percent. ‘Made in India’ mobile phone shipments crossed 2 billion cumulative units over this period of time. In 2014, only 19 percent of domestic shipments were locally made, as compared to the 98 percent registered in 2022, the report said.

Increasing internal demands, followed by increasing digital literacy and government incentives to manufacturers are reportedly the major reasons for this growth. The report adds that initiatives like the Phased Manufacturing Program (PMP), Make in India, Production Linked Incentive (PLI), and Atma-Nirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) contributed to increasing local mobile phone manufacturing with perceivable results.

Counterpoint’s Research Director Tarun Pathak said that local value addition now stands at more than 15 percent, compared to the single digits in 2014. This has reportedly led to growing investments, increasing jobs, and overall ecosystem development.

Pathak added that the government intends to capitalise on this progress by aiming to make India a “semiconductor manufacturing and export hub.” He said that the country might see increasing semiconductor production, especially for smartphones, as India is attempting to bridge the urban-rural digital divide while also trying to become a mobile phone exporting powerhouse.

The report quoted Analyst Prachir Singh, who stated that the government is also focused on making India a semiconductor hub. It has proposed a semiconductor PLI scheme, which would provide financial incentives to companies that set up semiconductor manufacturing plants in India.

The government is reportedly also investing heavily in infrastructure with $1 trillion (roughly Rs. 83,21,600 crore) to further fuel these plans. These measures are expected to further boost mobile phone manufacturing in India and make it a global hub for semiconductor production.

5G in India Seen Accounting for About 57 Percent of Mobile Subscriptions by 2028: Ericsson Mobility Report

The 5G subscription in India is estimated to have reached about 10 million by 2022 end, and is seen accounting for about 57 percent of mobile subscriptions in the country by the end of 2028, making it “the fastest growing” 5G region globally, according to Ericsson Mobility Report. 

With the launch of 5G services in October 2022, the major 5G Indian market is witnessing huge network deployments under its Digital India initiative, it observed.

The geopolitical challenges and macroeconomic slowdown in some markets notwithstanding, communications service providers globally are continuing to invest in 5G, the June 2023 edition of the Ericsson Mobility Report revealed.

“5G subscriptions in India reached about 10 million by end of 2022 and are estimated to account for about 57 percent of mobile subscriptions in the country by the end of 2028, making it the fastest growing 5G region globally,” it said.

The fifth generation mobile subscriptions are growing in every region and forecast to top 1.5 billion globally by the end of 2023.

The uptake of 5G subscriptions in North America has been stronger than expected in previous forecasts. The region had the highest 5G global subscription penetration at 41 percent at the end of 2022.

Global mobile network data traffic continues to rise with the monthly global average usage per smartphone expected to exceed 20GB by the end of 2023.

The report also highlighted the continued revenue growth in leading 5G markets.

“The global adoption of 5G technology has surpassed one billion subscriptions, bringing positive revenue growth for communications service providers in leading 5G markets,” Fredrik Jejdling, Executive Vice President and Head of Networks, Ericsson, said.

In the past two years, the 5G introduction in the top twenty markets has resulted in a seven per cent revenue boost, Jejdling said, underlining a strong link between the increase in 5G subscriptions and service revenue.

Globally, around 240 communications service providers (CSPs) have launched commercial 5G services and about 35 have deployed or launched 5G standalone (SA). The most common 5G services launched by service providers for consumers are enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), gaming and some (Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality) AR/VR-based services, such as training and education.

The report also reveals that 5G continues to drive innovation in mobile service packaging.

Among communications service providers, it is increasingly common to offer bundles with various popular entertainment services such as television, music streaming or cloud gaming platforms.

About 58 percent of 5G service providers currently do so in various forms.

As per Ericsson, by 2028, 5G is estimated to account for almost 80 per cent of all FWA connections.

Sid Meier’s Railroads Coming to iOS, Android on April 5, Feral Interactive Working on Port

Sid Meier’s Railroads, originally released for PC in 2006, in coming to iOS and Android in April. The popular classic railroad business simulation game is being ported to mobile platforms by Feral Interactive, known for its work on porting games such as Grid Autosport and Tropico to mobile platforms. Railroads is the final instalment of the Railroad Tycoon series by renowned video game designer and producer Sid Meier, and fits in well with Feral Interactive’s approach to bringing popular simulation games to mobile platforms.

London, UK-based Feral Interactive, a specialist in porting games to different platforms (primarily MacOS, Android, and iOS), has announced that Sid Meier’s Railroads will release on iOS and Android on April 5. The game is already up for pre-registration on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store, and will be available to download starting April 5.

 

The popular tycoon game puts the player in charge of a railroad company, responsible for connecting various towns to transport both passengers and goods. The game is focused on economic development, with the player expected to help industrial growth by connecting locations according to demand and supply factors.

Many of the scenarios are set in historical eras and locations where railroad development actually took place and aided the economy and industry at the time, including the UK, Europe, and parts of the US. The player also sometimes takes on the identity of real-life railway tycoons and industrialists of the past, such as Cornelius Vanderbilt and J.P. Morgan.

While much of Feral Interactive’s work is on bringing Windows games to MacOS, the developer has also worked to bring titles such as Grid Autosport and Tropico (largely based on Tropico 3) to iOS and Android.
