Apple Rolls Out Software Updates With Critical Security Fixes for Older iPhone, iPad, MacBook Models

Apple has begun rolling out iOS, iPadOS, and macOS updates for older iPhone, iPad, and MacBook models. The updates address some critical security issues that needed immediate fixes for users whose devices are ineligible for Apple’s latest iOS 16.3, iPadOS 16.3, and macOS Ventura updates for iPhone, iPad, and MacBook, widely released on a stable channel recently. The company notes a list of 14 different critical security and system vulnerabilities that have been addressed with the latest software updates for older Apple devices.

iPhone models older than the iPhone 8 are ineligible for Apple’s latest iOS 16.3 update, hence leaving them critically vulnerable to security threats. iOS 12.5.7 and iPadOS 12.5.7 fixes these issues on iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, and iPod touch (6th generation) devices, Apple confirmed in its security bulletin. The iOS update for older devices addresses a critical WebKit Bugzilla vulnerability with tracking number CVE-2022-42856, which was unearthed by Clément Lecigne of Google’s Threat Analysis Group. The vulnerability was being exploited by malicious phishing attackers to remotely access devices, run unauthorized commands or code, additional malware, or spyware.

Other WebKit confusion-related security vulnerabilities addressed in the latest OS updates for macOS include AppleMobileFileIntegrity, curl, dcerpc, DiskArbitration, DriverKit, Intel Graphics Driver, PackageKit, Kernel, Mail Exchange, Maps, Screen Time, Weather, WebKit, and Windows Installer.

With such critical vulnerabilities, users are advised to get their device updates as soon as possible in order to protect themselves from malicious attacks. Users who own iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, iPod touch (6th generation), or devices running on macOS Monterey, macOS Big Sur, are advised to install the latest security updates by heading to Settings > General > Software Update.

iOS 16.3, iPadOS 16.3 Update Rolling Out With End-to-End iCloud Encryption, Security Keys Support: Details

iOS 16.3 and iPadOS 16.3 updates have begun rolling out for eligible iPhone and iPad models. The stable updates to iOS 16.3, iPadOS 16.3 come 4 months after the first iOS 16 update was released by the Cupertino, California-based tech giant. Apple’s recent smartphones will now support Advanced Data Protection, which adds support for end-to-end encryption on iCloud. The update also adds support for security keys, which means Apple devices now support physical security keys for two-factor authentication. The update also brings other bug fixes, performance enhancements, and introduces support for Apple HomePod (2nd Gen) on supported iPhone models.

According to Apple’s changelog announcing the stable iOS 16.3 update, users on iPhone 8 and newer models can now enable Advanced Data Protection on their iCloud accounts, which will protect data from apps like Messages, Photos, and Safari. Meanwhile, the latest iOS 16.3, and iPadOS 16.3 updates also introduce support for the use of physical security keys for two-factor authentication while signing into an Apple ID, for added security.

As part of the latest iOS 16.3, Apple has also introduced support for the new HomePod (2nd Gen) that allows for easy pairing, and music transfer between iPhone devices and the Apple HomePod (2nd Gen).

Meanwhile, the Emergency SOS call mechanism has also been updated on iOS 16.3, with the user now required to release their hold on the power and volume toggle buttons to trigger an emergency SOS call. The update also fixes an issue with the FreeForm app where drawing strokes created with Apple Pencil or hand were not appearing on shared boards.

The update also fixes bugs that caused lock screen blackouts, horizontal lines on waking up iPhone 14 Pro Max, the Home lock screen widget not displaying the Home app status correctly, and Siri not responding to music requests, according to the company.

Apple has also introduced a new Unity wallpaper that the company had announced earlier as part of its celebration for Black History Month in the US in February, as part of the iOS 16.3 update.

Google Calendar Bug Reported To Create Incorrect Events on Android, iOS Devices

Google Calendar users have reportedly experienced a bug that is causing the application to create random events based on emails received in the user’s Gmail inbox. Several users seem to have reported the issue on the Google Calendar app for Android and iOS mobile devices. The bug has been reported by various users on Twitter as well, who took to the social media platform to share screenshots of their Calendar apps filled with random events.

According to a report by 9to5Google, Google Calendar has been displaying random created events that have been triggered by messages in their Gmail inbox that do not necessarily track back to any actual event. The events created incorrectly mostly seem to be all-day events which have been caused by a bug in the Gmail mobile application on some Android and iOS devices. However, it isn’t clear what particular bug has caused this to happen, added the report.

Several users were seen taking to Twitter to post screenshots of their Google Calendar apps filled with all-day events that do not lead to any real event concerning the user.

Google Calendar users who wish to avoid clutter in their Google Calendar may evade the bug by heading to Settings > Events > Turn Off ‘Automatically add events from Gmail to my calendar​’​. However, doing so will stop Google Calendar’s ability to track actual events from your Gmail inbox and provide users with notifications for the same as a reminder.

It is important to note that Google hasn’t officially acknowledged, addressed, or offered a remedy to the bug that has been reported.

Last year, the Alphabet-owned search giant had introduced a ‘Focus time’ entries feature that allowed users to set a timeslot in which all meeting requests will be automatically declined.

YouTube is Testing ‘Add To Queue’ Feature for Android, iOS Premium Subscribers: Report

YouTube has started testing out an ‘Add to Queue’ feature on its Android and iOS apps. Currently, the feature has been made available for testing to YouTube Premium subscribers only. So far, the mobile app versions of YouTube, on both iOS and Android, have only been known to feature ‘Save To Watch Later’ and ‘Save To Playlist’ features for planned playback. These save the video onto the user’s library and needs manual removal for deleting a song from the list. Notably, YouTube’s Add To Queue has been available on the web version for some time now.

According to a report by 9to5Google, the Add to Queue feature is available for testing on Android and iOS apps for only YouTube Premium accounts. The option will feature at the top of the three-dot overflow menu located next to the video meta and thumbnail.

Once a user adds a video to the queue, YouTube will display a panel at the bottom of the page showcasing the viewing order of videos that are in line to play next. The panel can be interacted with through drag and drop gestures for re-ordering the queue, while swipe left gesture will remove a video from the playlist.

Users who are YouTube Premium subscribers and would want to test out the new feature may do so by heading to the Try New Features section from the profile menu on the YouTube application on their Android or iOS devices.

Although Youtube hasn’t listed the feature on their support website for YouTube on Google Play Store, a Gadgets 360 staff member was able to access the feature on their Android phone.

The Alphabet-owned video-sharing platform had also recently introduced improved spam and abuse detection mechanisms to its platform at a time when social media companies are facing increased scrutiny over their inability to limit abuse and harassment.

WhatsApp Reportedly Testing Voice Status Update for iOS Beta: All Details

WhatsApp, the Meta-owned instant messaging app, is reportedly working on a feature that will let iOS users share voice notes in their status updates. As of now, the users can only share pictures, videos and links in their WhatsApp status. However, once the new feature will be rolled out, WhatsApp users on iOS will be reportedly able to share voice notes or voice clips as well in their status updates on the app. According to the report, the messaging platform is testing the feature on iOS Beta for an upcoming update.

According to a report by WhatsApp development tracker WABetaInfo, WhatsApp users on iOS will be able to share a voice note of up to 30 seconds alongside text in their status updates, similar to what they can currently do in a WhatsApp chat.

The report has also shared a screengrab of the same, hinting at the upcoming feature, which shows a microphone icon on the bottom of the text status.

WhatsApp on iOS users will be required to click on the microphone icon and record their voice to upload it as their status update. They can even add text to it, if needed. It is worth noting that the voice status updates will only be shared with the people selected in the privacy settings. Also, these voice notes will always be end-to-end encrypted.

Not only iOS, but this ability is said to be also being tested in WhatsApp beta for Android’s upcoming update. As of now, this feature is still under development, so it would be very early to say anything.

Meanwhile, WhatsApp recently rolled out WhatsApp Polls to users on both Android and iOS. The Polls feature was introduced alongside ‘Communities’, a feature that allows users to have separate groups under one umbrella to organise group conversations. WhatsApp Polls lets users create polls within the group with the ability to vote. Facebook Messenger and Telegram currently allow users to add group polls. WhatsApp’s poll feature will be protected by end-to-end encryption.

iPhone, iPad Bug Caused Safari to Crash When Typing Certain Letters: Report

iPhone and iPad users were reportedly facing a bizarre bug that was crashing the Safari browser while trying to search for certain words. The app was supposedly crashing as users entered the first three letters of certain words. The issue seemed to have affected Apple devices running on different versions of iOS 16. In addition, there have been reports of iOS 15 users also experiencing this bug. The exact cause for this error is unknown, however, several users are now claiming that this error has been fixed.

According to a report by MacRumours, several iPhone and iPad users have started experiencing a bug that would crash the Safari app when trying to search for certain terms. The issue had supposedly appeared overnight for several Apple devices running on iOS 15.7.1, ‌iOS 16‌, iOS 16.1, iOS 16.1.1, and the iOS 16.2 beta.

The Safari app was said to be crashing whenever users tried to type tar, bes, wal, wel, old, sta, pla, and a few other phrases in the search bar. The bug seemingly prevented users from going beyond the first three letters of a word. Apple users had pointed out that turning off Safari Suggestions in the app settings would prevent the bug from surfacing.

It is believed to be a server-side bug that Apple has purportedly fixed without having to roll out an iOS update.

In related news, Apple recently released the iOS 16.1.1 update with several bug fixes and improvements that were not mentioned in the change logs. However, the update is said to have resolved a Wi-Fi connectivity issue faced by iOS 16 users. This update is available for iPhone 8 and later models. iOS 16.1.1, iPadOS 16.1.1, macOS Ventura 13.0.1 Updates With Security Fixes Released: All You Need to Know

iOS 16.1.1 update along with the first public update to macOS Ventura in in the form of macOS 13.0.1 were rolled out by the iPhone and MacBook manufacturer on Wednesday. The new software update to the operating system for iPhone and iPad models brings a range of bugs fixes and performance improvements. Meanwhile, the macOS Ventura 13.0.1 update brings with it patches for two security flaws that caused arbitrary error code execution that were widely reported on MacBook devices running on MacOS Ventura. The Cupertino, California-based company, however, has not shared the exact details of the bug fixes on the latest iOS 16.1.1 update, but reports indicate that it seems to have fixed a number of issues, including complaints about Wi-Fi connectivity on devices running iOS 16.

Apple’s release notes announcing the software update to iOS 16.1.1 states that it comes with bug fixes and performance improvements, without providing details of the issues that were resolved. Meanwhile, the company’s release notes for the MacOS Ventura 13.0.1 update lists two specific security patches that include fixes for the libxml2 library, which address issues that could allow a remote user to unexpectedly terminate an app and execute arbitrary code on their devices.

iPhone, and iPad users wishing to update their OS to the latest iOS 16.1.1 and iPadOS 16.1.1 versions respectively may do so by navigating to Settings > General > Software Update.

The update will be available for iPhone 8 and later models, all iPad Pro models, iPad Air 3rd generation and later models, iPad 5th generation and later models, and iPad mini 5th generation and later models.

The update to macOS Ventura 13.0.1 also brings two libxml2 security fixes, according to the company’s release notes. The first security fix resolves an issue where a remote user could unexpectedly terminate an app and execute arbitrary code on their devices. The security patches were developed in partnership with Maddie Stone, Ned Williamson, and Nathan Wachholz of Google Project Zero, according to the release notes.

Meanwhile, beta versions of Apple’s upcoming OS updates, including iOS 16.2, iPadOS 16.2, and macOS Ventura 13.1, were also rolled out to testers by the company. iOS 16.2, and MacOS Ventura are tipped to release publicly by mid-December this year. Meanwhile, iPadOS 16.2 is tipped to arrive by March 2023, according to the same report.

WhatsApp Said to Be Questioned by IT Ministry for Cause of Tuesday’s Outage

The IT Ministry in India is said to have asked Meta-owned WhatsApp to share reasons behind Tuesday’s service outage of the messaging platform.

WhatsApp services snag on Tuesday had left users complaining about not being able to send or receive text and video messages, and services had resumed after nearly two hours.

Sources said the IT Ministry has asked the company to share reasons on what caused the WhatsApp outage. An email sent to WhatsApp on the issue did not elicit a response.

In a late night statement on Tuesday, WhatsApp said a “technical error” caused the outage.

“The brief outage was a result of a technical error on our part and has now been resolved,” a Meta company spokesperson had said.

According to Downdetector, which tracks outage reports, the messaging app was not working for many users across multiple regions on Tuesday afternoon. At one point during the outage on Tuesday, over 29,000 reports were flagged by users on Downdetector. Downdetector’s heatmap was showing WhatsApp users in major cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Kolkata, were impacted by the snag.

#Whatsappdown had begun trending on Twitter soon after, and many users took to the microblogging platform to share funny memes on the issue. 

It was reported yesterday that the users were unable to send a message via WhatsApp for Android as well as iOS. WhatsApp typically shows a single tick mark for a message that has been sent, and two tick marks when a message has been delivered. However, it was confirmed that no tick marks are displayed when sending messages in group chats or individual conversations.

WhatsApp Web and WhatsApp’s desktop apps, which work independently of a connected phone’s internet connection, also appeared to be similarly affected by the outage.

Ram Setu just got an official mobile game. In a partnership between nCore Games and Amazon Prime Video, the Akshay Kumar-led action-adventure movie has received an endless runner game. Ram Setu: The Run comes from Mumbai-based developer Dot9 Games, boasting local split-screen multiplayer, cinematic elements, and cinematic visuals inspired by the upcoming movie — releasing October 25, in theatres. Ram Setu: The Run is now available to download for free on Android and iOS devices.

nCore’s latest mobile game features traditional endless runner elements, featuring obstacles that one needs to jump or roll through. Ram Setu: The Run draws inspiration from the movie to add spinning blades, explosive barrels, and trucks bashing in from the sides, urging players to switch up their strategy. This is adding to the random thugs popping in, who can be knocked out by timing a down swipe — sending your character into a flying kick attack. Players can choose between the three leading roles of Dr. Aryan Kulshrestha (Akshay Kumar), Sandra (Jacqueline Fernandez), or AP (Satyadev Kancharana). The last two can be unlocked using gold earned via playthrough.

The mechanics draw inspiration from titles like Temple Run, adding magnets for easy pickings, a shield, and score multipliers. Each of the three characters can be upgraded for tougher runs in the future and can be dressed in windproof gear. The latter can be purchased using diamonds, a rare in-game commodity. Additionally, Ram Setu: The Run often spawns jeeps, which understandably, grants speed and lets you smash through obstacles. However, it is limited to only two hits. Then there are drones, shooting down lasers, which can be avoided by a simple screen swipe.

“Ram Setu: The Run is our attempt at marrying our prowess in game development with a blockbuster IP to bring a polished, entertaining gaming experience that anyone can just pick up and play,” said Deepak Ail, Co-Founder and CEO, Dot9 Games, in a prepared statement. “To further underscore our commitment to that, our team has worked hard to ensure it is optimised well enough to be playable even on low-end smartphones as well as tablets. Gaming is for everyone and Ram Setu: The Run is our effort in making that a reality.”

Ram Setu: The Run is out now on Android and iOS. The Akshay Kumar-led Ram Setu movie releases the day after Diwali, October 25, in theatres.

Microsoft Discontinues Swiftkey Keyboard Support on iOS Devices: Report

Microsoft has announced that it will be discontinuing iOS support for its predictive QWERTY Keyboard application software, Swiftkey. The keyboard application will reportedly be delisted from the Apple App Store on October 5. However, iOS users who have already installed the Swiftkey application on their iPhone, or iPad will be able to continue using the application until it is manually uninstalled or when the user migrates to another iOS device.

Microsoft acquired the predictive keyboard technology company SwiftKey for a reported GBP 250 million (roughly Rs. 1,990 crore) in 2016, and has since been working on developing Android, and iOS capabilities for the application while integrating it with its own Word Flow touch keyboard technology for Windows.

While the company has confirmed its decision to withdraw from the Apple iOS ecosystem, the reason behind the development has not been publicly stated. However, Apple’s policies around safeguarding its walled garden could be the reason behind Microsoft discontinuing Swiftkey support on iOS devices, according to a report by ZDnet.

The technology used by Swiftkey is built on algorithms that analyze large amounts of text, to predict what users are trying to type using artificial intelligence (AI) and natural language processing. In order for the predictive technology to work, it requires integration and grant of permissions that then allows the algorithms to analyze the user’s word usage and typing patterns. This grant of access could be lacking at Apple with the stricter policies now in place, according to the report.

A Reddit user had first highlighted the lack of updates on the Microsoft Swiftkey app on the Apple App Store, in a thread. The app hadn’t received an update in more than a year.

Microsoft will however continue its support for SwiftKey on Android and the underlying technology that powers the Windows touch keyboard, confirmed Chris Wolfe, Director of Product Management at SwiftKey, in a statement to ZDnet.
