My friend called me tacky for celebrating finishing my cancer treatments

DEAR ABBY: I have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. Due to my DNA results, I will have a double mastectomy sometime in the next few months after I finish chemo. I want to celebrate that it was caught early by throwing a “Ta-ta to the Tatas” party complete with crazy wigs, a boob cake and a round of slippery nipple cocktails, a week or so before my surgery.

One of my friends thinks the idea is tacky and she’s firmly against it. Abby, she can’t even say the word “cancer” aloud; she has to whisper it. Am I wrong? Is it tacky to want to affirm life and flout both fear and death with over-the-top, tacky humor? This kind of humor is how I deal with serious problems. If I can mock the problem, I lessen its power. For me, it’s like celebrating Dia de Los Muertos, but in this case, it’s my breasts that I’m losing, not my life. What do you think? — PARTY MOOD IN MONTANA

DEAR PARTY MOOD: I think you are a brave and strong woman, clearly much more so than your friend. You are dealing with a serious challenge in the healthiest way possible — by facing it head-on. You deserve to be supported by your friends in the months to come, but the woman you have written about is not one of them. She isn’t emotionally strong enough to accompany you on this journey. Don’t blame her, but DO disinvite her. Bottoms up!

DEAR ABBY: I have two sons in their 50s. My older son is kind, attentive and loving. The younger one, “Scott,” is problematic. Both my boys were raised the same, although when they were in their early teens, I divorced their alcoholic father. At that point, I had to work three jobs to keep them fed and sheltered.

Scott constantly returns to the past and accuses me of never having time for him. He no longer speaks to me, which happens often and can last for long periods. His wrath is directed solely at me, and he accuses me of turning the rest of the family against him. He’s negative and controlling, and the truth is, no one wants to be around him. In addition to posting hurtful things on social media, he now refers to me as the “ice maiden.”

A close family member advised me to look up the definition of narcissism, and I was shocked to see the description of this disorder fits Scott perfectly. What I have read and researched about narcissism says “stay away” and only counseling will help. He refuses, saying it would be “too hurtful.” Have I lost a son? Is this something I created? — MOM OF A MONSTER

DEAR MOM: Please stop blaming yourself. If you have researched narcissism, you should already know that you didn’t cause Scott’s problem. Whether the estrangement is permanent, only time will tell. In the meantime, protect yourself by no longer trying to engage with him, and block his hurtful social media posts. You can’t fix what’s wrong with your son, and he won’t try to fix himself because he’s enjoying being the injured party.

Influencer Patricia White dead at 30, followers mourn loss

Social media is mourning the loss of Spanish influencer Patricia Rite, who tragically died at age 30 following a courageous battle with skin cancer.

The social media star’s family confirmed her passing in a statement on April 16.

“Patricia left us. Her mother and her relatives ask for respect in these hard times,” they wrote, per Jam Press. “Thank you to all the people, who in one way or another, gave her support and love during this time, directly or indirectly.”

The Huelva native had been a fixture on social media, frequently posting content on fashion and cosmetics to her TikTok and Instagram pages, where she collectively amassed over 340,000 followers.

She also appeared on the Spanish reality TV dating show “Mujeres y Hombres y Viceversa.”

Rite’s life took a turn four years ago, however, when the budding star was diagnosed with skin cancer after she went to the doctor to remove a birthmark, Euro reported.

Despite the devastating news, the influencer continued to post prolifically, using her platforms to spread awareness about the insidious condition.

In her final Instagram video on April 5, Rite addressed fans from her hospital bed.

“Busy week, I was going to be treated on Tuesday but was finally admitted to hospital and treated on Friday,” she explained. “Since then, bad vomiting with an achy body until yesterday. I couldn’t move from the bathroom and I felt terrible.”

The brave Instagrammer added, “Today, I feel a little stronger. Since yesterday, I haven’t vomited and I’ve started eating, which I hadn’t done since Friday, and I’m starting to improve. Let’s go little by little.”

Rite often posted updates from her hospital bed.

Rite’s legions of supporters were devastated over her loss.

“A huge hug to the whole family, I’m so sorry from the bottom of my heart,” wrote one mourner, while another lamented, “I cannot believe it. Life is super unfair, Patri.”

“Fly high, ever since I met you, you inspired me,” said a third bereaved follower. “My heart just skipped a beat. RIP precious, and a huge hug to her mother, family and friends.”

Unfortunately, skin cancer’s innocuous-seeming symptoms often make it difficult to diagnose it until it’s too late.

Last year, Australian model and influencer Oceana Strachan had her life turned upside down after a seemingly harmless freckle turned out to be a life-threatening melanoma.

Thankfully the Aussie survived the horrific ordeal, which she credited to detecting the disease early.

Two-time ‘Survivor’ contestant Keith Nale dead at 62

Two-time “Survivor” contestant Keith Nale has died at age 62, his family has confirmed.

Nale’s heartbroken son, Wes Nale, told Entertainment Tonight his father died Tuesday afternoon.

“He’d been battling cancer for the past few months and we found out about it in January,” he added.

His brother, Kevin Nale added that their dad’s life was “taken way too soon.”

Keith, who hailed from Louisiana, was a contestant in two seasons of “Survivor” in 2015.

He appeared on two versions of the show, including “Survivor: San Juan del Sur” and “Survivor: Cambodia” both of which aired that year.

Wes appeared on “Survivor: San Juan del Sur” alongside his dad.

Tributes poured in following the sad news of Keith’s death, with his former “Survivor: San Juan del Sur” co-star Kelley Wentworth tweeting, “Keith – a man with the purest heart, who brought humor into moments where it was needed most.

“I’m grateful I had the opportunity to meet Keith & share memories together on the beaches of Nicaragua & Cambodia.”

“My heart is with the entire Nale family. This is a devastating loss,” she added.

“My condolences to the Big D, Wes, Austin and entire Nale family,” Keith’s other co-star Jeremy Collins wrote. “You will be missed Keith but your legacy will live on. Rest in power my firefighter/survivor brother.”

Keith notably made it to the final four of the series before being voted out just one day before the Final Tribal Council during his first stint.

He became a firm fan favorite which prompted him to make a defiant return for “Survivor: Cambodia.”

Keith was ultimately sent home a second time when Wentworth won immunity, but spoke highly of the series following his exit.

Speaking to UpRoxx in 2014, the former firefighter opened up about what it was like to compete in his 50s.

“They were impressed, being I was 53,” he said of his firefighter pals. “Now granted that’s not 93, but that’s not 23 either.”

“They were all behind me, a great bunch of guys. They wanted me to win it and, you know, bring it home to Louisiana. But that just didn’t happen.”

Former Italy PM Silvio Berlusconi has leukaemia, source says

MILAN – Four-times Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi has been diagnosed with leukemia, a source close to the matter said on Thursday, a day after he was admitted to intensive care with breathing problems.

The 86-year-old, whose media empire has made him a billionaire, is being treated in a cardiac unit of Milan’s San Raffaele hospital.

There has been no official comment on his condition, but the source’s diagnosis of leukemia, which is a cancer of the blood cells, confirmed a report in the Corriere della Sera daily.

Berlusconi’s Forza Italia party is part of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing coalition, though the former prime minister does not have a role in government.

“I spoke this morning with Professor (Alberto) Zangrillo (Berlusconi’s personal doctor) and he told me that Berlusconi spent a quiet night, his condition is stable,” Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani told RAI state television.

Tajani, a long-time Berlusconi ally within Forza Italia, noted Berlusconi had survived a series of health problems.

“We all want to be optimistic and we hope that the lion will return soon to take charge of the party. He’s our political leader and of course he never gives up,” Tajani told the broadcaster.

The party subsequently released a statement saying Berlusconi had spoken in the morning to senior Forza Italia allies and urged “maximum commitment” in parliament. “The country needs us,” he was quoted as saying.

ENDURING INFLUENCE

Berlusconi, who made his fortune from commercial television, has suffered repeated bouts of ill-health in recent years and came out of the same hospital just last week after being treated for a few days.

“There is obviously concern.. (He) is alert but not in a position to deal with every situation,” Paolo Barelli, leader of Forza Italia in the lower house of parliament, told Italian radio.

Berlusconi stepped down as prime minister for the last time in 2011, weighed down by sleaze and scandal, including his notorious “bunga bunga” parties, as Italy came close to a Greek-style debt crisis.

There has been no official comment on Silvio Berlusconi’s condition.

But he returned to the Italian Senate after a national election last September and there is no obvious successor as leader of his party.

As well as his enduring influence on Italian politics, Berlusconi’s Fininvest family holding group retains control of the MediaForEurope broadcast business. His son Pier Silvio Berlusconi is chief executive of the company.

Berlusconi built Italy’s biggest commercial TV network and gained an international profile as owner of European soccer champions AC Milan before entering politics in 1994, when the previous political class was brought down by a corruption scandal.

His health has deteriorated in recent years. He had heart surgery in 2016, has also had prostate cancer, and has been repeatedly admitted to hospital since contracting COVID-19 in 2020.

What to Know About Pisces, Scorpio, and Cancer

Whooshing waves of emotion, free-flowing tears, and mysterious depth—it’s time to dive into the world of water signs. While they’re frequently known as the emotional trio of Western astrology, Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces have a lot more welling up inside. “They need security, they need a safe home,” says Tali Edut, one half of The AstroTwins, ELLE’s resident astrologers. “They need to feel heard and seen and understood.” Below, learn what else lies below the watery surface.

Water Sign Dates

Cancer: June 21–July 22

Scorpio: October 23–November 21

Pisces: February 19–March 20

Water Sign Traits

Leah Romero

Much like water itself, Edut says water signs are emotionally fluid and their moods shift by the minute. “They have to change outfits a few times a day.” But water signs are also sensitive to the nuances of interpersonal dynamics and need to have a feeling of security—a safe home and relationships where they feel heard, seen, and understood. “They care about how people are feeling,” she says. “They can also get sucked up in those feelings.”

If you have a water sign for your sun sign…

…you’re a nurturing person who’s all about your family and your home. “When you’re a water sun sign, the people who are close to you, you kind of define yourself through that,” Edut explains. “The people close to you are important to your identity.”

If you have a water sign for your rising sign

…you can be perceived as a “giant mush,” Edut says. You cry at the drop of a hat and tend to be emotionally reactive. “Very tapped into immediate vibes.”

If you have a water sign for your moon sign

…you’re great at intuiting other people’s feelings. But, as Edut explains, that sometimes means you sacrifice your own. “When you have a water sign moon, you have to really work on being vulnerable and knowing which emotions are yours and which ones you’re psychically picking up from other people.”

Water Sign Compatibility

Fire and water can mix well together, but it can get steamy fast. “It also gets a little too hot to handle,” Edut says. “You have to be be constantly regulating the temperature, taking breaks, and being mindful of your reactions.” Water and earth, on the other hand, are similar in that they crave a certain level of security and stability. “Water can get earth to open up more,” she adds. Air and water are a weird mix, but they can bond over their interests in more obscure things. “They both have this way of loving to discover quirky things. It’s an artistic and creative match between them.” However, it may feel a little superficial for water signs, Edut says, while air signs “might feel like they’re getting sucked into drama that they don’t really want.”

Cancer Traits

Traditionally referred to as the “mother” sign, Cancers are known to be nurturing—though only for people they care about. “It takes a minute to be let into a Cancer’s world and past their shell,” Edut explains. “Once you are, they’ll feed you, they’ll remember your birthday, they’ll send a card.” But know that Cancers are pretty sensitive and can easily get their feelings hurt, often taking things personally. They’re also the cardinal water signs, meaning they’re a bit bossy and love to take charge. “They’re really great leaders, actually,” Edut says. “That doesn’t get said enough.” Case in point: Some famous Cancers include Mindy Kaling, Ariana Grande, and Meryl Streep—all leaders in their respective fields.

Scorpio Traits

Scorpios are the fixed water sign and, in turn, the most routine-driven of the bunch. “They like to sit down and go deep into something. They’re obsessive in terms of their focus.” This can make them really good at coding, finance, and statistics. “They’re very much the detectives of the zodiac, but they’re also very mysterious,” Edut says. “They’re secretive, they don’t like to be read, they’re private. Sometimes, they cover that up by being very loud and obnoxious.” Drake and Hillary Clinton? Both famous Scorpios.

Pisces Traits

Lastly, Pisces are the mutable water sign. “They’re definitely the ebb and flow,” Edut explains. “They’ll disappear one day, come back.” Pisces rule the dream realm and are typically in their own world, making them amazing artists. (Take Rihanna, Justin Bieber, and Millie Bobby Brown—some of our most famous Pisces—for example.) Pisces are also super compassionate and big-hearted. “If you’re okay with not being able to pin them down, they will always be there.” The most understanding of the zodiac signs, Pisces like to help underdogs, but in turn, they can make a lot of sacrifices and then disappear when they get resentful. “They really struggle with boundaries,” Edut adds.

Rapid-Fire Questions

What’s the best present to buy a water sign?

Edut: Definitely clothes from their favorite designer. Water signs need their clothes to be conversation pieces, icebreakers, something that’s unique to them.

Is there an ideal career path for water signs?

Edut: They do their best work in privacy or at least need to have bouts of privacy, even if they’re working with people. A job that lets them go out into the public, but then go back to their cave and assess.

What would you recommend as the next movie or TV show that a water sign should watch?

Edut: I would say Yellowjackets season 2—all about what happens [next], group dynamics, and emotions.

I want to divorce my husband but he has cancer

DEAR ABBY: My husband and I have been married for nine years. While we were dating, he was kind, considerate and loving. After we married, he turned into a chronic complainer, something he later confessed he had been hiding while we dated.

He talks to me like I’m trash and then gets nice when he wants something. He complains about my grown children, my best friend and even if I leave for work a couple of minutes early. He is a miserable person. I cannot do anything to make him happy. I can’t take this anymore.

He has taken the things away from me that I love — flowers, gardening, pets, books, friends, etc. I’m ready to leave, but he has cancer and I’d feel guilty. He is clear right now, but it will come back.

I don’t want to stay. Life is too short to live this way. He has a great support system with his family. They would take care of him. My health has been affected by him and his terrible attitude. What do I do? — WORN-OUT WIFE

DEAR WIFE: What you do now is consult a lawyer, pack your bags and leave before he worsens. Do not expect your husband to be grateful for any of the efforts you have made on his behalf during the course of your marriage. During the time you were dating, he hid from you the fact that he was a verbal abuser. Now you know he was a fraud. Don’t feel guilty for protecting yourself and reclaiming your life.

DEAR ABBY: My brother passed away. He and my sister-in-law had a good marriage. A month after his funeral, my sister-in-law gave her kids their father’s clothes, instructed them to go through them, keep what they wanted or sell or donate the rest. It has been barely a year. Now she’s redecorating their house — painting, taking down pictures and buying new furniture.

This bothers me greatly. I’m so hurt that everything is being changed. It’s like she’s trying to erase him — all within one year! Should I ask her why everything is being changed and disposed of so soon? And should I feel so hurt about this? — UNSURE HOW TO FEEL

DEAR UNSURE: Your former sister-in-law appears to be more pragmatic than sentimental, and there is nothing wrong with that. She knew her late husband could no longer use his wardrobe, and saw no reason to keep the items hanging in the closet. That she offered his clothes to her children was appropriate. That she is now making changes to the house is not unusual. People are cautioned not to make “important decisions” for about a year after a spouse passes, and your former SIL has wisely refrained.

If you want to ask her why she’s changing things, do so in a non-accusatory way that won’t offend her. I suspect that you are feeling hurt because you are still not ready to accept that your brother is gone forever. You might find it helpful to talk about it with someone with expertise in the grieving process.

Duran Duran guitarist Andy Taylor reveals stage 4 cancer diagnosis in band’s Rock and Roll HOF speech

Founding Duran Duran guitarist Andy Taylor is suffering from stage 4 prostate cancer, his bandmates revealed during their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction speech on Saturday night

Taylor, 61, was unable to attend the band’s induction ceremony on Saturday night but frontman Simon Le Bon read a letter Taylor had written, in which he revealed that he was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer four years ago.

“Many families have experienced the slow burn of this disease and of course, we are no different,” Taylor wrote in his letter. “So I speak from the perspective of a family man but with profound humility to the band, the greatest fans a group could have, and this exceptional accolade.”

The British rocker said he has been receiving excellent treatment, but had recently suffered a “setback.” He acknowledged that although his condition is “not immediately life-threatening, there is no cure.”

“Despite the exceptional efforts of my team, I had to be honest in that both physically and mentally, I would be pushing my boundaries,” the letter read. “However, none of this needs to or should detract from what this band (with or without me) has achieved and sustained for 44 years.”

The induction ceremony was intended to be a reunion for Duran Duran, which Taylor was a member of from 1980 to 1986 and again from 2001 to 2006. He played guitar on the band’s first three albums, which included the hit songs “Rio” and “Hungry Like the Wolf.”

“We’ve had a privileged life, we were a bit naughty but really nice, a bit shirty but very well dressed, a bit full of ourselves because we had a lot to give, but as I’ve said many times, when you feel that collective, instinctive, kindred spirit of creativity mixed with ambition, armed with an über cool bunch of fans, well what could possibly go wrong?” Taylor reflected in his letter.

He said he was “massively disappointed” that he could not be there with his bandmates — Nick Rhodes, John Taylor, Roger Taylor, and Le Bon — and said he had even bought a new guitar to play for the occasion. Taylor is not related to John or Roger.

Taylor recently had a setback with his cancer and is not expected to tour with the band in the near future.
Redferns

“I’m so very proud of these four brothers; I’m amazed at their durability, and I’m overjoyed at accepting this award,” the letter read. “I often doubted the day would come. I’m sure as hell glad I’m around to see the day.”

Also inducted to the Hall of Fame on Saturday were Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo, Eminem, Eurythmics, Dolly Parton, Lionel Richie, and Carly Simon.

Cancer in young adults is rising — is a ‘westernized’ lifestyle to blame?

The cancer age gap is closing — to the detriment of younger generations.

A new study has shown that young, ordinarily healthy adults are being diagnosed with cancer at worrying rates.

Researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital saw that more and more people under the age of 50 are being diagnosed with cancer of the breast, colon, esophagus, kidney, liver, pancreas and more — globally — in a trend that took a sharp upward turn around the year 1990.

“From our data, we observed something called the birth cohort effect. This effect shows that each successive group of people born at a later time (e.g., decade-later) have a higher risk of developing cancer later in life, likely due to risk factors they were exposed to at a young age,” said Dr. Shuji Ogino, professor of pathology and physician-scientist at Brigham and Women’s, in a press release.

“We found that this risk is increasing with each generation,” Ogino continued. “For instance, people born in 1960 experienced higher cancer risk before they turn 50 than people born in 1950 and we predict that this risk level will continue to climb in successive generations.”

Cancer is a genetic disease — it’s caused by changes in genes that lead to cell division error and tumors. Some of these genetic changes are inherited, but the new study, published in Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology, focused on environmental factors that cause damage to DNA and contribute to the cancer growth.

Researchers found that there was an increase of young people with cancer.
Getty Images

Cancer-causing toxins could be more rampant than people believe. There are a few well-known risks out in the world, such as high UV exposure or smoking cigarettes, while emerging research now points to second-, and even third-hand smoke — as in touching surfaces contaminated by smoke residue — as significant carcinogens, too.

When looking at the incidence of 14 types of cancers, Ogino, along with lead study author Dr. Tomotaka Ugai and their team, discovered an increasing trend of cancer presence and diagnosis prior to the age of 50.

Harmful exposures at a young age — which could point to problematic diet, lifestyle behaviors and environmental pollution — could play a vital role. Since those factors have drastically changed in the past few decades, the scientists have suggested that a “westernized” lifestyle could be a major contributor to the development of cancer.

Alcohol consumption, smoking, obesity, eating highly processed foods and sleep deprivation are potential risk factors, much of which is on the rise around the world.

“Among the 14 cancer types on the rise that we studied, eight were related to the digestive system. The food we eat feeds the microorganisms in our gut,” said Ugai. “Diet directly affects microbiome composition and eventually these changes can influence disease risk and outcomes.”

While the team could not adequately analyze low- and middle-income countries due to insufficient data, Ogino and Ugai hope to continue their cancer research and work with international research groups going forward.

I had a really bad period —and it led to this shocking diagnosis

Two days after getting her COVID booster shot, Victoria Lang had an “insane” period.

That one abnormal flow uncovered a shocking diagnosis — the 30-year-old pharmacist had cancer.

“I woke up in the morning and I had to run and get a towel to hold under me,” Lang told South West News Service. “I know what is normal for me and what my periods are like and this was insane.”

At the time — March 2021 — news was circulating about vaccines possibly affecting menstrual cycles, so Lang decided to wait 24 hours to see if things would get better. But the next day, she said she continued to bleed heavily.

Lang, who lives in Scotland, noted that she had a few bruises on her knees and shoulders but since she knew how she got them, she said, “alarm bells weren’t going off.

“But the bruises did take ages to heal properly.”

“I woke up in the morning and I had to run and get a towel to hold under me,” Lang, 30, told South West News Service. “I know what is normal for me and what my periods are like and this was insane.”
Victoria Lang / SWNS

She called her physician, who ran some blood tests. The next day, her doctor told her she needed to go to the hospital, according to SWNS.

“I knew at that point something was seriously wrong and I had leukemia in my head,” she told the news service.

A doctor told her that it might be leukemia, but that they needed to take a bone marrow sample for confirmation. After being diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia, Lang spent 42 days at a cancer center — and told SWNS that the blood cancer might not have been discovered as quickly if it she hadn’t noted the abnormal period.

Lang said she gained weight and went up a dress size. She added: “I have been left with really bad stretch marks, you would think I had had twins, but my skin just couldn’t cope with it.”

The disease is now in remission and Lang is having normal periods again.

“I would say to people to just trust your instincts, you know what is normal about your own body,” she told SWNS. “I knew my period wasn’t right and if I hadn’t called the doctors to discuss it then I might not have been diagnosed as quickly.”
