No gun, cellphone found in car where Savanah Soto was found dead with boyfriend

The family of Savanah Nicole Soto’s boyfriend does not believe he killed the pregnant Texas teen who went missing on the day she was supposed to be induced – as it was revealed that no firearms or cellphones were discovered in the car where cops found the couple’s bullet-riddled bodies.

Gabriel Guerra, whose son Matthew Guerra, 22, was found dead alongside his girlfriend Soto, 18, outside of a San Antonio apartment complex, insisted that his child was not responsible for the couple’s deaths.

“They were inseparable. Was it a perfect relationship? No, but she definitely was not a prisoner there,” he told KENS5. .

Guerra’s father and stepmother described how the couple was looking forward to the arrival of baby Fabian.

“We still can’t believe we’re just never going to meet him,” Guerra’s stepmother, Raquel Guerra, told Fox San Antonio.

Meanwhile, his father, Gabriel, pointed out presents under a Christmas tree.

“Those are Savanah’s and Matthew’s and baby Fabian’s,” he told the outlet.

“We had to remind him at the baby shower to let Savanah open some of the gifts. He was opening all the gifts. They were both definitely happy and excited,” Gabriel said.

Savanah Nicole Soto,18, and her boyfriend, Matthew Guerra, 22, died from gunshot wounds, police revealed. TikTok

Soto’s brother, Jordan Corona, told CBS News that police told him that both the pregnant teen and her boyfriend were shot in the back of the head.

Soto had been in the front passenger seat with a child carrier on her lap and her boyfriend in the back, sources familiar with the probe told News 4 San Antonio.

Police did not find a firearm or Guerra’s cellphone inside the Kia sedan where the couple was found Tuesday.

Guerra’s family described their efforts in trying to locate the missing couple on Saturday, the day Soto was expected to be induced.

“Once it was, like, the 2:30 p.m. mark, we started panicking,” Gabriel told the outlet. “I started calling. I’m calling, racing home, racing over there, calling police.”

He said he raced to his son’s apartment, where he kicked in the door and found a lit candle and the diaper bag that Soto planned to take with her to the appointment.

“That’s when I saw Savanah’s overnight bag for the hospital that she didn’t take with her and that even threw me more in a panic,” Gabriel told Fox San Antonio.

He said he asked Leon Valley police whether authorities could request his son’s location data information, but that a detective told him it was unlikely a judge would grant the request because the situation lacked exigent circumstances.

“(The detective) basically said, ‘They’re adults and if they want to disappear, they can disappear,” he told News 4. “And, again, I reminded them, the baby is overdue, has been overdue — they missed the due date.

The couple were both found dead in a car, Soto’s sister-in-law said. WOAI

“And to me that’s a life-threatening … I mean, there should have been more urgency,” he added.

The detective told the outlet that he had been instructed by the police chief to direct questions to the San Antonio Police Department, which did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for a comment.

“I just hope we can get to the bottom of this,” Raquel told News 4. “And justice be served, because I just can’t fathom how anybody could do that  to a pregnant woman/ I just can’t get that out of my head.”

Gabriel said he knows Guerra was arrested in 2022 for domestic abuse against Savanah — and even suggested that the boyfriend stay in custody longer.

“They had contacted each other on the phone and that was a violation, so they can please keep him in there and unfortunately it would have to be Savanah to say that, and she wouldn’t do it, so he was let out,” he told the outlet, adding that domestic abuse charges were never filed again.

Guerra was reportedly on probation for assaulting Soto on Christmas Day last year.

Gabriel said his son had a criminal history that included unlawful carry of a weapon, evading police and an assault charge causing bodily injury.

Savanah Soto was set to be induced the day she vanished. TikTok

In June, a judge granted Guerra probation for the family violence case, and permitted him to have contact with Soto as long as it was not  “harmful or injurious,” according court documents cited by News 4.

The probation was set to expire in June 2024, but a judge extended it to February 2025 after Guerra picked up additional, unrelated charges including unlawful carrying of a weapon, evading arrest in a vehicle, and reckless driving, according to the paper.

“He didn’t hang around the best crowd,” Gabriel said, but added that he believed the young man was going to change when he became a dad himself.

Soto (left) was excited to become a mom, her family said. Gloria Cordova / Facebook

“He talked about how it was going to make him better, a better person,” Gabriel told KENS5.

Meanwhile, Soto’s mother, Gloria Cordova, also said she is seeking answers about the mysterious deaths.

“Why was she in the front and he was in the back? Obviously, that says someone else was there,” she asked, adding that she suspects Guerra was involved in illegal activity, according to the outlet.

“I think it had something to do with him and things that he was doing, not my daughter,” Cordova told CBS News.

“My daughter just was there with him and they didn’t want … they didn’t want someone to say what happened, somebody that’s going to say it’s so-and-so or this is what he looked like. She just was there at the wrong time,” she added.

“He used to abuse her and I told her to get out of the relationship, but she — she was hard-headed, she wouldn’t listen. But I think this time she was going to leave him already. That’s what I’m hearing,” Cordova told the outlet.

“They took an innocent, an innocent girl that was going to be a mommy, they just took her life for nothing,” Cordova told KENS5.

2 teens shot as rowdy mob clashes with Chicago cops for second night

A massive mob of rowdy teenagers clashed with cops near downtown Chicago’s Millenium Park on Saturday night, leaving two teens wounded and at least one bystander beaten.

The unruly mob erupted in violence — trashing property, smashing windshields and torching cars while attacking at least one motorist — forcing cops to escort tourists to safety, WFLD-TV News reported Sunday.

Chicago police said two teens — 16 and 17 years old — were wounded by a gunman in the crowd, the outlet reported.

The violence came a day after a 14-year-old boy was shot during another outburst of teen violence at 31st Avenue Beach.

Police reported one arrest in that incident.

On Saturday, hundreds — and possibly thousands — of teenagers massed in the Chicago Loop around 9 p.m. after social media posts called for a meetup near Millennium Park, WMAQ-TV in Chicago reported.

“Last night CPD monitored activity happening across the city and officers were in place to quickly respond to active incidents and large gatherings,” police said in a statement. “We will continue to have sufficient resources in place as we work to strengthen safety in every neighborhood.”

Many youngsters tried to get into the park but were turned away at checkpoints that barred anyone under 21 who wasn’t accompanied by an adult, the outlets reported.

“It’s heartbreaking,” one witness told the station. “Kids fighting, chasing each other. Some of them got guns. It’s really heartbreaking when one of them actually gets hurt, and that’s unfortunate.”

“It was a lot of cops here but they were still outnumbered,” the witness said. “There were so many teenagers that showed up, and they tried to keep the peace and keep them under control.”

One woman whose car was damaged by the mob reported her husband was beaten while sitting in the passenger seat, and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

The two teens shot in the melee were also taken to the hospital, and were in fair condition.

Smartphone Usage Over 3 Hours a Day in Teens May Cause Back Pain, Other Health Issues

Because of the popularity of smartphones and tablets, as well as the growth of television channels, computer games, and educational applications, children and teenagers are spending more amount of time gazing at screens, sometimes with poor posture, which can lead to back pain and other issues.

A study by Brazilian researchers, funded by FAPESP and reported in an article published in the scientific journal Healthcare, identified several risk factors for spinal health, such as looking at screens for more than three hours a day, proximity of the eyes to the screen, and sitting or lying on the stomach.

The study focused on thoracic spine pain (TSP). The thoracic spine is located at the back of the chest (the thorax), mostly between the shoulder blades, extending from the bottom of the neck to the start of the lumbar spine. The data analysed came from surveys of 14- to 18-year-old male and female students in the first and second years of high school in Bauru, a medium-sized city in Sao Paulo state.

A baseline questionnaire was completed in March-June 2017 by 1,628 participants, of whom 1,393 completed a follow-up questionnaire in 2018. The analysis showed a one-year prevalence of 38.4 percent (the proportion reporting TSP in both the baseline and follow-up surveys) and a one-year incidence of 10.1 percent (new TSP reported only in the follow-up survey). More girls than boys reported TSP.

Risk factors

TSP is common in different age groups of the general population worldwide, with prevalence ranging from 15 percent-35 percent in adults and 13 percent-35 percent in children and adolescents. Explosive growth in the use of electronic devices during the COVID-19 pandemic clearly made the problem worse. The risk factors associated with TSP are physical, physiological, psychological and behavioral, according to several investigations. There is also strong evidence of the effects of physical activity, sedentary habits and mental disorders on spinal health. All these factors are considered critical by the World Health Organization (WHO) in its latest global review of evidence and guidelines.

“The study can be used to inform health education programs for school students, teachers, staff and parents,” said Alberto de Vitta, first author of the article. He has a PhD in education from the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in public health at Sao Paulo State University (UNESP) in Botucatu.

“This is in line with some of the objectives of the National Curriculum Parameters [PCN, Brazilian government guidelines for secondary schools], according to which schools are responsible for health education, including identification of risks to individual and collective health and interventions to combat them, as well as promotion of self-care habits with regard to the body’s possibilities and limits,” said Vitta, who is currently teaching and researching at Eduvale College as a faculty member in its Department of Physical Therapy in Avare, Sao Paulo state, and the University of Sapucai Valley’s Graduate Program in Education, Knowledge and Society in Pouso Alegre, Minas Gerais state.

Information on risk factors for TSP in high school students is important because children and adolescents with back pain are more inactive, achieve less academically and have more psychosocial problems, according to the article. In addition, fewer studies have been conducted on TSP than on lower back and neck pain. A systematic review of the literature on TSP found only two prospective studies regarding prognostic factors.

South Carolina store allows teenage shoplifters to work instead of pressing charges

Two South Carolina teenagers stole from a store at a mall in Greenville, but the business elected to turn the incident into a learning opportunity and a chance to give back to the community instead of pressing charges against the shoplifters.

The teenage boys were caught by Greenville Police on surveillance video on March 13 stealing from Palmetto Moon in Haywood Mall.

But Palmetto Moon president Amber Dube said that when the clothing store learned the shoplifters were teenagers, they wanted to work with the families on resolving the issue without pressing charges.

As a result, the boys will work for Palmetto Moon.

“I think this is a situation where teenagers do stupid things, and we know that,” Dube told FOX Carolina. “So I think it’s important for us to think about what they did and really judge on the merits of who they are and what they can contribute back to the community.”

Dube said the teenagers’ parents were heavily involved in finding a solution to the shoplifting incident and that the boys went back to the store to return the stolen items, apologize and pay for the items.

“These kids are smart kids, they’re athletes, they have a strong future,” she said. “So we wanted to make sure that they learned a lesson, and they were held accountable for their actions, and felt that this was the best way for them to learn their lesson and also to give back to the community.”

The teenagers will work in the back of Palmetto Moon to learn what the workers do to prepare the store for customers.

The boys will donate the wages they receive to the Greenville Police Department and will also do volunteer work for the agency.

“I’m hoping really that this is a message of community, of giving back, of partnership in a parent’s involvement,” Dube said. “I’m hoping that this message is really resonating with the community to say, we’re all in this together, and we can make our communities much better and more positive.”

NYC 13-year-old charged with murdering teen after school

A 13-year-old boy has been charged with murdering an older Brooklyn teen during an after-school fight over a girl, cops said Monday.

Two other boys, ages 14 and 15 — and both with previous felony arrests — were busted in the heinous crime as well, charged with assault and gang-assault raps, police said.

The three young accused hoods turned themselves in to police Sunday night in the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old high-school senior Nyheem Wright, who was killed in front of his twin brother in a parking lot in Coney Island on the afternoon of Jan. 20.

The suspects’ names were not released by the NYPD because of their ages.

The oldest suspect has been busted in the past for assault, grand larceny and criminal possession of a loaded firearm, cops said.

Nyheem Wright was stabbed to death in front of his brother, Raheem.
Facebook

The 14-year-old has been arrested for two previous robberies, police said.

The busts come as the NYPD grapples with what city Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell has called a “deficient” juvenile criminal-justice system hampered by the state’s “Raise the Age” statute.

The statute, signed into law by former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, took effect in October 2019, upping the age for a teen to face adult charges to 18, from the previous 16- and 17-year-old threshold.

Since then, police statistics show drastically fewer arrests in the seven major crimes and gun cases for under-18 suspects.

Cops said Nyheem’s senseless slaying stemmed from a dispute over a girl, and the teen’s mother, Simone Brooks, has told The Post that his stricken sibling, Raheem, “stayed with his twin brother the whole time,” trying to help him and then watching him die.

“I was on the phone with [Raheem] … and when the ambulance came, they kept saying, ‘[Nyheem’s] losing a lot of blood, he’s losing a lot of blood!’ ” Brooks said.

Two of the arrested teens have prior felony arrests, cops said.
Peter Gerber

Brooks said Nyheem’s wound severed a major artery.

“There was nothing anyone could have done because the blood would just drain right out,” she said.

The principal of Nyheem’s school, K728 Liberation Diploma Plus High School, spent the night at the hospital with the family trying to help comfort them before his death, Brooks said.

After the teen’s death, city schools Chancellor David Banks tweeted, “I spoke with the young man’s principal this evening, who described him as a joyful leader.

“He was on the verge of graduation, and was a hard worker who took an active role in leading other young people at his school,” Banks wrote of Nyheem.

Nyheem Wright was remembered by his principal as a “joyful leader.”
Gregory P. Mango

Brooks told The Post before the arrests that she wanted the “little punks” who killed her son to pay.

“These ones nowadays, they all want to pull weapons,” Brooks, 50, said at the time. “They don’t want to fight it out because they’re just little punks.”

“We want justice for my son Nyheem because he did not deserve this, and we are not OK.”

My mom is using my daughter’s death for social media clout

DEAR ABBY: My daughter passed away nine years ago. She was almost 13. My mother never bothered to have a relationship with her when she was alive. But now, on every birthday and anniversary of her passing, Mom posts on Facebook how much she misses her and how “close” they were. Her friends all send messages of love addressed to Mom, with no mention of my husband and me. It hurts and upsets us, but I don’t know how — or if — I should talk with her about it. Any words of advice? — GRIEVING MOM IN CALIFORNIA

DEAR GRIEVING MOM: Please accept my deepest sympathy for the loss of your daughter. It is possible now that she is gone, your mother realizes how many opportunities she missed to have a close relationship with her grandchild, and she posts those messages out of guilt. She may also do it for attention, which is sad. You can’t stop her from posting what she wants on her page, but you can spare yourself the upset you experience when you see it if you stay away from Facebook on these occasions.

DEAR ABBY: I am a closeted lesbian in my teens and really scared about coming out. I recently moved to an area of the country that is full of racists, sexists and homophobes. Most of my friends are really religious. One of them has said bad things about gay people and what she would like to do to them. I’m scared to come out to them.

I have only come out to a few people, but I know my family will accept me no matter what. I would really like to feel comfortable around my friends as my true self, but I’m not sure how I can do that. — YEARNING TO BE ME IN THE SOUTH

DEAR YEARNING: Because you are sure your parents will be supportive and accepting, come out to them. However, unless you consider coming out in your community to be safe, you shouldn’t do it. You can find friends on the internet. Social media can provide friendships until you are old enough to leave the area you now live in. This is what many young LGBTQ people do. You have a wonderful life ahead of you, and you should come out when you feel the time is right.

DEAR ABBY: How does one handle visiting a patient who is in the hospital for tests or a procedure when they have an attention-seeking person sitting with them the entire time? The patient is up for visitors and able to communicate, but this extra person — who is not who you have gone to see — monopolizes the entire visit. I offered to give the person a break so I could actually visit the patient, but the hint was ignored. Any suggestions? — DREADING VISITATION IN OHIO

DEAR DREADING: I do have one. Before you visit, call the patient and ask if a visit is welcome and if there is a time when you can be alone. If the answer is no, wait until the patient is out of the hospital to have that visit. Between you and me, when someone is in the hospital, that person should rest rather than “entertain” anyone, with the exception of closest family members.

Inside Madonna’s daughter Mercy’s 17th birthday celebration

Madonna’s daughter Mercy is 17!

The singer gave a glimpse of the teenager’s fun-filled birthday celebration via her Instagram Stories Monday.

“Happy birthday Chifundo!” Madonna, 64, captioned party photos. “We love you!! My precious beautiful talented daughter.”

The birthday girl posed in front of silver balloons spelling out her name as she rocked a floral dress.

Mercy’s celebration also featured blue and purple balloons, as well as matching flowers and black candles.

The teen appeared to go out to dinner with her family members, ending her night at home singing Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” around a table.

Mercy’s brother David, 17, and twin sisters, Stella and Estere, 10, helped her ring in the special day.

Madonna’s other children, Lourdes, 26, and Rocco, 22, seemingly were not present at the party.

The teenager wore a floral dress.

The Grammy winner recently spoke candidly about being a mother of six kids, admitting she is “struggling to understand how” to parent them.

“Growing up with a mother like me is a challenge,” she said in her cover story for three different European editions of Vanity Fair last week.

“It has been the most difficult, the hardest battle,” Madonna added, calling motherhood a “work of art” for which no one is given “a manual.”

Mercy’s siblings helped her ring in her 17th year.
madonna/Instagram

“You have to learn from mistakes,” the Queen of Pop explained. “It is a profession that requires a lot of time. And it is exhausting because there is never rest.”

The interview came one year after Madonna’s eldest child called her a “control freak” of a parent.

“My precious beautiful talented daughter,” Madonna gushed.
madonna/Instagram

“She has controlled me my whole life,” Lourdes alleged to Interview magazine in October 2021. “I needed to be completely independent from her as soon as I graduated high school.”

The model joked that she inherited her mom’s “control issues” but not her “work ethic,” referring to Madonna as the “hardest worker” she’s ever seen.

Madonna gave birth to Lourdes and Rocco in 1996 and 2000 with trainer Carlos Leon and director Guy Ritchie, respectively.

She and Ritchie adopted David in 2006. After their divorce two years later, the “Like a Virgin” singer went on to adopt Mercy, Stella and Estere.

NY’s disastrous Raise the Age law

Teen violence continues to spiral out of control, yet Gov. Kathy Hochul refuses to lift a finger when it comes to one of its key drivers: the 2017 Raise the Age law, which prevents anyone under 18 from being prosecuted as an adult.

Before Raise the Age, 16- and 17-year-olds could be charged as adults; now such suspects are likely to be sent to Family Court, where they barely face consequences.

Yet New York is facing an ugly surge of teen violence, including terrifying shootings at city schools. Last week, a 13-year-old was charged with opening fire and wounding two other teens at Campus Magnet HS in Queens.

Gangs, as Mayor Eric Adams (an ex-cop) has pointed out, often make younger members their gunmen, knowing they’ll get off easy if caught — a practice Raise the Age encourages.

And the fallout is already clear: Nearly one out of five perps nabbed for robbery last year was under 18, as NYPD brass fumed this month. Over the past three years, the number of under-18 shooters more than doubled, from 48 in 2019 (when Raise the Age took full effect) to 124 last year. The number of teens struck by gunfire mushroomed at a similar rate, from 64 to 153.

And the future looks even worse, with more kids returning to crime after cushy collars. “Nearly half of 16-year-olds arrested in the first year of Raise the Age were rearrested within 15 months,” including a quarter for violent felonies, former Bronx ADA W. Dyer Halpern warned in City Journal last year. The numbers “significantly outpace similar arrests” a year before Raise the Age, as does “the recidivism rate for 17-year-olds arrested over the same period.”

Gov. Kathy Hochul has refused to address the 2017 Raise the Age Law despite the surge in teen violence in New York City.
Kevin C. Downs for NY Post

Hochul talks plenty about gun laws, but ignores Raise the Age: She failed to mention it in her State of the State or in her 277-page program book. It seems the gov’s only too happy to let kids run around with guns in their hands, wreaking havoc on everyone (including themselves).

“We can’t normalize this. We can’t continue to ignore the violence that is really engulfing our young people,” pleads Adams. “If we don’t intervene, they are on a pathway of a career in violence, and we have to stop it.”

He’s dead right. Question is: Can he get Hochul and the hard-hearted leftist ideologues in the Legislature to listen?

Body of teen found in 1978 ID’d as Kenneth Nevada Williams

A body found in Southern California over four decades ago has finally been identified through DNA technology as a teenage boy from La Puente.

The remains of “John Doe 1978,” which were discovered on a residential street in Long Beach on June 3, 1978, were officially identified as Kenneth Nevada Williams, the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) said in a statement Wednesday.

Williams, 15, ran away from his home in La Puente the same year his body was discovered. He was never reported missing.

At the time of his death, he had the word “paid” stamped on his hand.

“There was no identification, fingerprints were taken, the fingerprints didn’t match any databases and the victim, unfortunately, was only identified as a John Doe,” LBPD detective Shea Robertson told ABC7 of the initial discovery of Williams’ body.

John Doe 1978 was originally linked to convicted serial killer Randy Kraft. Sometimes known as the “Freeway Killer,” Kraft raped, tortured, and murdered 16 young men in Southern California between 1972 and 1983. After an investigation, he was ruled out as a suspect.

The break in the 44-year-old case came in September, when homicide detectives reached out to the Othram lab in Texas to create a DNA sample of John Doe 1978 for investigative genealogy. The sample was subsequently matched to Williams.

Although police did not reveal how Williams died, they vowed to continue the investigation into his death.

“Justice delayed doesn’t have to be justice denied in this case. Kenneth Nevada Williams is now a known victim and identifying his killer is the next step in solving this case,” Donald Alway, the Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office, said in a statement.

Speaking to ABC7 earlier this week, Williams’ sister, Roxanne Jones, said that the family assumed the teen had started a new life elsewhere.

“He wanted to live in the city and go to clubs and have fun and he just … he wasn’t into drugs or anything like that but you know, bright lights, big city,” she told the outlet.

“As soon as [the police] said there was a familial DNA match, I knew who it was who it had to be.”

Williams’ death is one of several cold cases inching closer to a resolution thanks to advanced DNA technology. Last month, police in Marysville, WA made an arrest in the 1998 murder of Jennifer Brinkman after DNA from the murder weapon was linked to a suspect.

“Solving this case has been at the top of the priority list of the Marysville Police Department for the past 24-plus years,” Police Chief Erik Scairpon said at the time.

“We never gave up or put this on a shelf.  It was continuously being investigated, with the belief that we would one day be able to bring some level of closure for the family and justice for Jennifer.”
