Horrifying final moments of Olympian Melissa Hoskins allegedly killed by world champion cyclist husband Rohan Dennis revealed

Horrifying details have emerged surrounding the final moments of an Olympic cyclist who was allegedly struck and killed by her athlete husband outside their family home in Adelaide, Australia.

Cycling world champ and Olympian Rohan Dennis was arrested and charged over the death of his wife after emergency services were called to the scene in the luxurious suburb of Medindie in Adelaide’s inner north around 8pm on Saturday.

Melissa Hoskins, 32, was found with serious injuries and rushed to Royal Adelaide Hospital.

She later died from her injuries in hospital.

Police will claim Hoskins jumped onto the hood of their $47,000 4WD Volkswagen Amarok ute and grabbed at a door handle while Dennis allegedly drove until she fell to the ground, The Adelaide Advertiser reports.

The mother of two may have been dragged some distance along the street, with the alleged incident believed to have been caught on neighboring security cameras.

Investigations into what sparked the alleged incident remain ongoing.

Detectives and Major Crash officers arrested Dennis and charged the two-time cycling time trial world champion with causing death by dangerous driving, driving without due care and endangering life.

He has been bailed to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on March 13.

A police statement surrounding the Medindie incident called for anyone with more information to contact Crime Stoppers.

Friends say Dennis and Ms Hoskins, who share two young children and have been married since 2018, were planning their post-retirement life in South Australia.

Dennis had only ended his 16-year career last year, and the pair had considered launching their own Adelaide Hills vineyard, according to The Advertiser.

The couple both competed at multiple Olympics, with Dennis winning a silver medal in 2012 for the team pursuit and a bronze in 2020 for road cycling.

Melissa Hoskins, who competed under her maiden name but went by Melissa Dennis on Facebook, had only just missed out on a medal in the team pursuit at the London Olympics.

Meanwhile, the final photo shared of the family on Dennis’ Instagram page has been flooded with messages from fans sharing their disbelief and devastation at the news.

The photo shared by Dennis on Boxing Day showed him smiling with Hoskins and their two children in front of a Christmas tree that still had unwrapped gifts underneath it.

Dennis in December also shared photos of him smiling with Hoskins and another one of their two children meeting Santa.

The 33-year-old also shared photos from the family’s holiday to Egypt in November.

A host of sporting organizations and fellow cyclists have paid tribute following Ms Hoskins’ tragic death.

Among them is the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC), who Ms Hoskins represented at the 2012 and 2016 Games.

“The AOC has expressed the utmost sadness at the loss of Olympic cyclist Melissa Hoskins after the tragic events in Adelaide,” it said in a post on X.

“Our condolences go to Melissa’s family, friends and the cycling community at this extremely difficult time.”

Marne Fechner, chief executive of AusCycling, the national governing body for the sport in Australia, labelled Ms Hoskins’ death as a “tragic incident”.

“Melissa, a mother, daughter, and wife, was also a champion cyclist who thrilled and inspired us with her exquisite skills on the track and road,” Ms Fechner said in a statement.

“Melissa began her competitive cycling career at just 16, and by the time she retired at the age of 25 she had shown the world that she was an athlete of rare prowess.

“Melissa described her team Pursuit Gold Medal at the 2015 UCI Track Cycling World Championships as the highlight of her career, but for the rest of us, the highlight was just having her around.”

Retired track cyclist, Anna Meares who has also been appointed chef de mission of the Australian Olympic Team for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, posted a condolence message on her social media channels.

“I have a very heavy heart,” Ms Meares said in a post to X.

“My thoughts are with their children, family and fellow friends.

“This is a very difficult and tragic time. RIP”

Ms Hoskins’ former team, GreenEDGE, which has since rebranded to Jayco-AlUla, similarly expressed its grief at the news.

“Our thoughts are with her family and friends and the whole cycling community at this deeply saddening time,” a statement from the team said.

“She will never be forgotten.

NYC smoke shop scene of man fatally shot in the head

A man was fatally shot inside a Harlem smoke shop Sunday after the gunman blasted the victim in the head, according to harrowing footage of the cold-blooded killing.

The 36-year-old victim was found bleeding from bullet wounds inside the smoke shop at 304 Lenox Ave. around 8 p.m., police said. The shooting is the latest rash of violence tied to the budding industry in the Big Apple.

The unnamed victim suffered a gunshot wound to the head and back, according to law enforcement sources.

He was taken to NYC Health and Hospitals/Harlem where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.

The suspect and the 36-year-old were involved in a dispute moments before the shooting, cops said.

Video of the encounter, obtained by The Post, shows the gunman and victim talking for several seconds as several other men stand around. The victim appears to start leaving, but as he’s walking out, the suspect pulled a gun out of his pocket and fired — striking the victim in the head, according to the footage.

The shooter was seen casually pulling out his gun and shooting the man in the head.

The gunman was seen shooting the man in the head as he appeared to be exiting the smoke shop.

The victim fell to the ground, but was still moving and appeared to try to get himself up before the shooter callously fired another round into the man’s back, the video shows.

The suspect is seen casually leaving the store following the violent attack. Officers said he fled on foot wearing dark-colored clothing.

No arrests have been made.

The Harlem store wasn’t the only smoke shop where employees needed to call police Sunday.

A smoke shop in Brooklyn was robbed by a masked suspect who displayed an unknown object and swiped cash, authorities said.

The robber was wearing all black including a mask, the NYPD said. No injuries were reported.

Robberies at NYC’s stoner-friendly storefronts continue to climb, a top cop said at a March 20 City Council public safety hearing.

The gunman has not yet been identified and no arrests have been made.

Robberies targeting storefronts that sell pot paraphernalia – and in many cases unregulated cannabis – have increased 10% this year compared to 2022, Police Chief of Patrol John Chell said.

Days before the council hearing, a worker was shot and killed during a botched smoke shop robbery in Queens.

Footage shows Irvo Otieno pinned down in leadup to death

Sheriff officials and mental hospital workers in Virginia forcefully pinned down patient Irvo Otieno until he stopped moving and his body went limp, according to footage of the deadly encounter released Tuesday.

The video, released by prosecutors who charged seven sheriff deputies and three hospital staffers with murder in Otieno’s death, shows the 28-year-old struggling under the body weight of multiple officials inside Central State Hospital on March 6.

At one point it appeared at least ten people were pushing down on Otieno while he was restrained and on the floor, according to the footage that has no audio.

Around 4 p.m., he arrived at the hospital before a different camera showed him being led into a room with tables and chairs around 4:20 p.m., according to timestamps on the video.

He’s brought to a seat before slumping to the floor.

At first, he’s seated but then lies flat.

And then it appears he starts to move around, leading to a growing number of workers pressing him down, the footage shows.

By close to 4:40 p.m., someone took his pulse as he laid unresponsive and moments later he was injected twice. Shortly after that, CPR began on his seemingly lifeless body as other life-saving efforts continued without much hope for about an hour.

By 5:48 p.m., a white sheet covered his body.

Dinwiddie Commonwealth’s Attorney Ann Cabell Baskervill asserted in court Tuesday workers held him down “from his braids down to his toes.”

“He certainly did not deserve to be smothered to death, which is what happened,” Baskervill said.

Baskervill has said multiple times he died from asphyxiation, though a final autopsy report has not been issued.

Defense attorneys have claimed the injections helped lead to his death, but Baskervill argued he was dead by the time the shots were administered.

Seven deputies and three hospital workers have been charged with second-degree murder.

A grand jury signed off on the charges Tuesday.

Lawyers representing many of the defendants have said they plan to strongly fight against the charges.

Some attorneys tried to minimize their clients’ roles in the incident either in court or speaking to the Associated Press Tuesday.

Baskervill’s filing that included the release of the footage also disclosed audio from 911 calls tied to the case.

One caller from the hospital said Otieno had been “very aggressive,” but stopped breathing during attempts to restrain him.

Other calls complain about the slow response from EMS to help Otieno.

“Those 10 monsters, those 10 criminals, I was happy to hear that they were indicted,” Otieno’s mother, Caroline Ouko, said during a Tuesday news conference. “And that is just the beginning step.”

A probe into the events before Otieno’s death – both at Henrico County hospital where he was taken and the jail where his family said he was allegedly mistreated – is ongoing, prosecutors with Henrico County said.

Jansen Panettiere’s cause of death revealed

Actor Jansen Panettiere died of an enlarged heart last month at the age of 28, his family announced Monday.

The younger brother of “Scream” actress Hayden Panettiere died Feb. 19 at his home in Nyack, NY.

“Jansen’s heart could be seen in his eyes, and his charm in his brilliant, engaging smile; his soul in his masterful and revealing paintings, and the joy of life in his dry wit,” said his family in a statement to ABC News. “His charisma, warmth, compassion for others, and his creative spirit will live forever in our hearts and in the hearts of all whom he encountered.”

The family added, “Though it offers little solace, the Medical Examiner reported Jansen’s sudden passing was due to cardiomegaly (enlarged heart), coupled with aortic valve complications.”

Panettiere was found by a friend unresponsive and sitting upright in a chair, according to the police report obtained by The Post from the Orangetown Police Department. The friend called 911 and performed CPR on him.

The actor’s pals became concerned after Panettiere missed a business meeting earlier in the day, according to the report.

When EMTs arrived around 5 p.m., they found Panettiere lying on his back on the floor of his living room, not breathing and “cold to the touch,” according to the report. He was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

His father, Alan Panettiere, told police he had spoken with his son the prior evening, and he “sounded okay.”

The medical examiner declined The Post’s request for confirmation of the family’s announcement. However, police confirmed there were “no obvious signs of trauma observed.”

Panettiere was an actor in his own right who boasted a lengthy Hollywood resume. He voiced many 2000s hits, like “Ice Age: The Meltdown,” “Blue’s Clues,” and “Robots.” He also appeared on one episode of “The Walking Dead” in 2019.

Jansen and his older sister, Hayden, 33, worked alongside each other on the Disney Channel original movie “Tiger Cruise” in 2004 and the family comedy “Racing Stripes” in 2005.

He was also the voice of Truman X in Nickelodeon’s “The X’s,” an animated television series that aired from 2005 to 2006.

On his Instagram page, which is still public, Panettiere often shared photos of his artwork, which featured colorful, abstract prints. He also painted other items, such as shoes and jackets.

In an Instagram post from Jan. 24, he showed a picture of his older sister trying to give him a haircut with a slight smile on his face.

“Not the first haircut she’s tried to give me,” he wrote in the caption.

Hayden has faced her own struggles. Her ex, Wladimir Klitschko, obtained full custody of their daughter, Kaya, now 8. Panettiere said she made the decision to relinquish custody as she struggled with an alcohol and drug addiction.

“It was the hardest thing I could do,” Hayden told People last year. “But the best thing for my daughter was to make sure she was okay, take care of myself and make sure I could be a good mom to her. And sometimes that means letting go.”

She told the outlet she was offered “happy pills” before walking red carpets when she was just 15 years old, and throughout her career, she continued to drink heavily and occasionally take opioids.

She checked into rehab for eight months after giving birth to Kaya. Panettiere revealed she also sought treatment for postpartum depression.

In 2018, the “Nashville” star started dating Brian Hickerson, who was sentenced to 45 days in jail in 2021 for two felony counts of domestic violence.

The pair got into a public brawl at the Sunset Marquis in LA in March 2022. Months later, Hickerson confirmed they had split — but they were spotted traveling together in November.

Teddy Von Nukem from 2017 Charlottesville rally dies before drug trial

The man who appeared in one of the most haunting images from the 2017 white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia shot and killed himself before standing trial over federal drug charges, according to reports.

Teddy Von Nukem died more than five years after a viral image showed him and others holding tiki torches during an ugly demonstration that descended into violence, the Daily Beast reported.

He was reportedly supposed to appear in Arizona federal court for drug trafficking charges on Jan. 30, but skipped out on the first day and instead shot himself outside his home in Missouri.

The autopsy report, obtained by the Daily Beast, indicated suicide notes were found at the scene for both authorities and his children.

“However handwriting is somewhat inconsistent,” the coroner’s report says.

Von Nukem, 35, was among hundreds that attended the rally on Aug. 12, 2017 that included various white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups, and led to the death of counter-protester Heather Heyer.

Von Nukem denied he was part of any extremist groups that helped organize the “Unite the Right” rally, but was a Donald Trump supporter, according to a Springfield News-Leader report from back then.

“The rally was not a racist rally,” he claimed in 2017. “It was a rally to save our history.”

“I don’t mind showing solidarity with them,” Von Nukem added, arguing white people were at a disadvantage in current society.

Von Nukem can be seen in a photo wearing a black shirt with a tiki torch in hand, according to Tuesday’s News-Leader report.

Von Nukem was allegedly involved in federal drug trafficking and set to stand trial over it, according to the News-Leader.

He tried to cross into the US from Mexico in 2021 with 15 kilograms of pills that tested positive for fentanyl, the indictment alleges. While he denied knowing the drugs had fentanyl, he admitted to attempting to smuggle in the contraband, the indictment states.

His obituary says he was a married father of five who “enjoyed visiting with people, talking to strangers, meditating, video games and board games, but most of all he loved dancing with each of his daughters every evening when he came home from work,” the News-Leader reported.

“Some people knew Ted and understood he was a different type of fellow and had different views of things, but he would give the shirt off his back if you asked or needed it,” the obit reportedly went on to read.

It appeared that the obit was pulled off the funeral home’s website Tuesday evening.

After Von Nukem was a no-show at his federal trial, the judge issued an arrest warrant, but when it was discovered he was dead, the case was dismissed, the Daily Beast reported.

Edgar Garay dies after falling off cliff in Puerto Rico

An Indiana man died after falling off a 70-foot cliff in Puerto Rico while shooting social media videos on Sunday, according to authorities and a report.

Edgar Garay’s submerged body was recovered Monday by Puerto Rico Emergency Bureau divers after he plummeted off the steep coastal cliff near a lighthouse in Cabo Rojo, the US Coast Guard said in a press release.

The body of Edgar Garay was found Monday afternoon.
US Coast Guard

The 27-year-old was on a day trip to the southwestern coast when he was last seen alive around 5:37 p.m. near the edge of the cliff, the US Coast Guard said.

Garay’s brother Carlos told WTHR that he was on the cliff with his cousin who warned him repeatedly not to get too close to the edge while shooting a TikTok video.

“My brother has a TikTok account that he loved to upload videos to,” Carlos Garay reportedly said. “Unfortunately, that was what he was trying to do when he was closer to the edge than he should have been.”

The distraught brother told the news station that Garay was found in an underwater cave with massive head injuries from the fall.

“We express our most heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Edgar Garay and pray they find closure and strength during this most difficult time,” said Coast Guard Capt. José E. Díaz in a statement.

“We appreciate the efforts of all the Coast Guard, Puerto Rico Police and partner agency emergency responders, especially the Puerto Rico Emergency Management Bureau dive unit that was able to locate Mr. Garay’s body in such a highly inaccessible and challenging environment,” the Coast Guard Sector San Juan commander additionally said.

Aircrafts, including Jayhawk helicopters, and a 154-foot fast response cutter were both used in hopes of finding the Garay. Multiple searches were undertaken Sunday night into Monday before the body was located, the Coast Guard said.

Connecticut State Rep. Quentin Williams killed in car crash

A Connecticut state lawmaker was killed on the road early Thursday morning after a wrong-way driver slammed into him and his vehicle erupted into flames, authorities said.

State Rep. Quentin Williams was fatally struck on his trip home from the governor’s inauguration ball — and just hours after being sworn in for his third term in office.

“We were about as close as any two people could come, and I can just say that I’ve rarely gotten calls … I don’t think I’ve ever gotten a call as devastating as the call that I got at 6:06 this morning,” State Sen. Matt Lesser said, according to WTNH.

The tragic crash happened around 12:30 a.m. as the 39-year-old Democrat was traveling southbound on Route 9 in Cromwell en route to Middletown, the area that he represented in the state House of Representatives. His car became engulfed in flames following the head-on impact, officials said.

Connecticut State Representative Quentin “Q” Williams died early Thursday. He was 39.
Connecticut House Democrats

The town where the accident occurred was about 15 miles from Hartford where the governor’s inaugural ball took place.

The wrong-way driver, 27-year-old Kimede Mustafaj, also died. It’s unknown if alcohol or drugs were involved.

Gov. Ned Lamont ordered flags in the state in to be flown at half-staff in light of the stunning tragedy.

“This is devastating news, and I am incredibly saddened by this tragedy,” the governor said in a statement.

The state representative was remembered for his “infectiously optimistic personality.”
AP

“Quentin had an infectiously optimistic personality, and he absolutely loved having the opportunity to represent his lifelong home of Middletown at the State Capitol. Public service was his passion, and he was always advocating on behalf of the people of his hometown.”

Williams, who graduated from Middletown schools, was the new co-chair of the General Assembly’s Labor and Public Employees Committee. That committee was going to meet for the first time Thursday, but instead all legislative activity was postponed until Monday.

The state Capitol and Legislative Office Building were both closed until next week.

Williams, also known as Q and a rising star in Connecticut politics, leaves behind his wife and mother. He grew up in public housing and went on to become the first African American to represent Middletown in the General Assembly, according to his biography on his legislative website.

“Representative Williams truly embodied the phrase larger than life,” Middletown Mayor Ben Florsheim said in a statement. “His laugh, smile, and presence were felt in every space shared with him.

The state Capitol was closed until next week.

“His passing is a true loss for our community. A light has been dimmed today.”

Lesser, the state senator, said his slain colleague talked about running for statewide office one day, or even for Congress.

“These are all things that he would think about,” he said. “We’ll never know. He had big dreams and hopes … I think he had a damn good chance of realizing.”

Worker dies after being sucked into jet engine at Alabama airport

A ground worker who was fatally injured on the ramp of a regional airport in Alabama was “ingested into the engine” of an American Airlines jetliner parked at the gate, officials said.

The worker was sucked into the Embraer 170’s engine about 3 p.m. Saturday at Montgomery Regional Airport, where it had its parking brake set, the National Transportation Safety Board told Insider.

The flight from Dallas was operated by Envoy Air, a wholly-owned subsidiary of American Airlines Group.

The airport said the victim worked for Piedmont Airlines, another American regional subsidiary, but did not provide further details.

“We are saddened to hear about the tragic loss of a team member of the AA/Piedmont Airlines,” the airport’s executive director, Wade Davis, said in a statement.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time,” he added.

In a statement, American Airlines said it was devastated by the incident.

“We are focused on ensuring that all involved have the support they need during this difficult time,” the company said, declining further comment during the ongoing investigation.

The NTSB and the Federal Aviation Administration are conducting the probe.

When a jet engine is operating, the air getting sucked into the intake can cause a low air pressure area that can pull nearby people into the rotating blades.

When parked, cones are placed near the engines to mark the boundaries of the hazard areas, the exact sizes of which are provided in the plane’s operating manual, according to High Sky Flying.

For example, the hazard area for an Airbus A320 is 14 feet in front of and on the sides of the engine inlet, according to the site.

It is rare for ground personnel to be sucked into engines because they are trained about the dangers and how to stand clear of them.

The dead ground worker has not been identified and details of the accident have not been released.

The NTSB did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
