California woman Destiny Abdrazack dead in house fire sparked by Christmas tree

A woman in California died early Christmas morning in a heartbreaking house fire sparked by an artificial Christmas tree.

Destiny Abdrazack, 22, was celebrating Christmas Eve with her fiancé’s family in their North Highlands home when an electrical short from the tree ignited a roaring fire around 2 a.m. Sunday, local NBC affiliate KCRA3 reported.

Abdrazack yelled that there were flames, awakening the five others in the house, which didn’t have working smoke alarms, according to her fiancé’s father Ernest Isom.

“She was the one who yelled fire, and that’s the sad part,” Isom told KCRA3 of the woman who was to be his future daughter-in-law. “She saved our lives.”

Abdrazack was pulled out of the burning building by firefighters, but later died at an area hospital.

The five others in the house — Isom, his wife and son and two other adults — survived.

Isom said the family had fallen asleep without turning off the Christmas tree lights.

“Unfortunately, they wanted to keep the lights on until the last minute and we all happened to fall asleep and we had an instant, seconds to get out,” he told the station. “It was fast, and that’s how quick it went. I’m talking minutes.”

Two family dogs also died in the fire and the house was destroyed.

Neighbors told the local news station that they woke up to a loud sound and looked out the window to see flames shooting out of the home.

“You could see the flickering light on the tree and that’s kind of like the telltale sign of a fire,” Richard Byers said.

He ran out of his house and grabbed a fire extinguisher while another neighbor used a garden house to try to put out the inferno to no avail.

“The fire just came right back,” Byers said. “It was too intense, moving too fast.”

His wife, Brandy Byers said when they came out of their home three doors down they saw Isom’s family standing outside shouting for help.

“They were screaming, ‘Destiny! There’s someone inside! There’s someone inside!” Brandy Byers told KCRA3. “There [was] nothing any of us could do.”

Firefighters rescued Abdrazack from the living room of the home and she was taken to an area hospital in critical condition.

Her family confirmed her death the next day and set up a GoFundMe to raise money to cover her hospital and funeral expenses.

Drug overdose deaths topped 106,000 in 2021

The United States hit a grim record of 106,699 drug overdose deaths in 2021, a 16% increase over 2020, the CDC said in its final report released this week.

Fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid up to 50 times stronger than heroin, is driving the surge. Drug overdose deaths involving fentanyl jumped 22% in 2021, the CDC said. Heroin overdoses, meanwhile, decreased 32%.

The CDC previously reported that as many as 107,000 drug overdose deaths occurred in 2021, but revised that number down slightly in their final tally after examining death records.

The flow of fentanyl into the United States has not abated in 2022.

The DEA announced this week that it seized 379 million potentially deadly doses of fentanyl this year, including 50.6 million fentanyl-laced counterfeit pills and 10,000 pounds of powder fentanyl.

Drug overdose deaths from cocaine and other stimulants also spiked in 2021.

The increase in drug overdose deaths in 2021 helped drive US life expectancy to a 25-year low of 76.4 years last year, the CDC said separately on Thursday. The coronavirus pandemic was the other main factor in declining life expectancy.

Vigil held for UVA students Davin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr., D’Sean Perry

Thousands of University of Virginia students and community members flooded the college’s South Lawn Monday night for an emotional vigil honoring three students killed in a shooting one night earlier.

Mourners lit candles and left flowers in remembrance of Davin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr. and D’Sean Perry, three UVA football players who were fatally shot when a gunman opened fire at their team bus on campus.

Their deaths have left the tight-knit football team reeling and many players openly wept as mourners paid tribute to the slain young men.

“It’s a void that we will feel for a long time. This team is very, very close,” the team’s former director of player relations, Jordan Bullock, told The Post. “To lose one is tragic, to lose three is just devastating.”

Bullock, 28, said it’s heartbreaking that the victims were taken so soon and will never get to graduate.

He said he believed Perry was destined for greatness.

D’Sean Perry was in the midst of his junior season for the Cavaliers.
University of Virginia

“D’Sean walked around with a curiosity of the world that would have taken him places,” Bullock said. “I think he would have grown up to be an influential person.”

He added that the student was a “silent leader” who people gravitated to.

“He had this ability just to connect with anybody.”

Lavel Davis Jr. was a wide receiver for Virginia.
University of Virginia

Bullock said he spoke to Davis last week at a UVA basketball game.

“He looked happy. Last season he was out because of an injury,” he said. “I think he was just happy to be back on the team and contribute.”

“Lavel was someone who always carried a smile on his face,” he added.

Devin Chandler was described as a “funny and passionate person” by his former roommate.
University of Virginia

Football player Chayce Chalmers, 21, a safety for the UVA team and former roommate of Chandler’s, was in shock over the senseless violence.

“I don’t believe it,” he told The Post of the shooting, his voice breaking. “It doesn’t feel real. It doesn’t feel real at all.”

He said Chandler was a funny and passionate person who was dedicated to football and enjoyed playing video games.

“He was a great, great guy,” Chalmers said of his roommate.

The vigil took place on the university’s South Lawn.

Chalmers called Perry “iconic” and said Davis was hardworking and “up and coming.”

“[Perry’s] a quiet guy. He’s hilarious. He knew how to get the team motivated,” he said, still speaking in the present. “He’s iconic, man.”

The football player said all three men were like family who shared a special bond.

“Those were my brothers, my teammates,” Chalmers said. “I worked my tail off with them, I cried with them.”

Another player expressed similar bonds with the victims.

“I’ll miss them a lot and I love them very much,” tight end Henry Duke told The Post.

Police arrested UVA student Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. and charged him with three counts of second-degree murder. He is being held at Henrico jail.

Tornadoes in Texas, Oklahoma kill 1, injure dozens, destroy buildings

Tornadoes tore through parts of Texas and Oklahoma on Friday, killing at least one person, injuring two dozens others and leaving dozens of homes and buildings in ruins.

Tornadoes hit hard in McCurtain County, Oklahoma, in the southeastern corner of the state. Cody McDaniel, the county’s emergency manager, confirmed one death although he didn’t immediately provide details.

The small town of Idabel saw a church, medical center and a school torn apart.

“There was total destruction on the south and east sides of Idabel,” Steven Carter, an emergency management coordinator for McCurtain County, told the Texarkana Gazette.

Carter told the paper people were still trapped late Friday.

Gov. Kevin Stitt said search-and-rescue teams and generators were being sent to the Idabel area.

“Praying for Oklahomans impacted by today’s tornadoes,” Stitt tweeted.

Keli Cain of the Oklahoma Emergency Management Office said at least three other counties were also hit by storms, with flash flooding in some areas.

The National Weather Service said tornadoes also were reported in Texas and Arkansas and a storm system was heading toward Louisiana.

In Texas, authorities in Lamar County said at least 50 homes were damaged or destroyed and 10 people were treated at one hospital, including two with critical injuries. No deaths were immediately reported.

Judge Brandon Bell, the county’s highest elected official, declared a disaster in the area, a step in getting federal assistance and funding. Bell’s declaration said at least two dozen people were injured across the county.

No deaths occurred in Powderly, Texas, although the tornado caused injuries and natural ruins.

One community hit hard was Powderly, about 45 miles west of Idabel and about 120 miles northeast of Dallas. Both Powderly and Idabel are near the Texas-Oklahoma border.

The Lamar County Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Management said the tornado touched down shortly after 4 p.m. and traveled north-northeast through the communities of Hopewell, Caviness, Beaver Creek and Powderly.

Randi Johnson, chief of the Powderly Volunteer Fire Department, told The Paris News newspaper that she wasn’t aware anyone had been killed but knew of injuries.

“It’s going to take a long time to get this cleaned up, but the community came together,” Johnson said. “It’s really heartbreaking to see.”

Churches opened their doors to serve as shelters for those whose homes were impacted.

Russians attack civilian convoy, killing 10 children

Russian forces killed 20 people, including 10 children, in a close-range attack on a six-car convoy of civilian vehicles fleeing southeastern Ukraine Saturday, according to reports.

The strike followed another missile hit on a different convoy in Zaporizhzhia province on Friday, which resulted in the deaths of 30 civilians.

Oleh Vasylovych Synyehubov, the Ukraine governor of Kharkiv Oblast, said that the 20 civilians were killed when the Russians shelled the convoy in Kupyansk, an important railroad junction in the province.

Photos showed wreckage of vehicles and civilian bodies found at the site, according to a report from the Security Service of Ukraine posted on the Telegram app Saturday.

Ukrainer governor of Kharkiv Oblast, Oleh Vasylovych Synyehubov, said that 20 civilians were killed during a close-range attack from Russian forces.

A Ukraine officer was seen covering a person who was killed by a Russian missile strike.

The report said the convoy was traveling in a so-called “grey zone” between occupied Svatov in the Luhansk region and liberated Kupyansk in the Kharkiv region.

“A brutal attack on civilians was carried out by a sabotage and reconnaissance group of the occupiers – they shot six old cars and one Gazelle truck at close range with small arms,” said Vasyl Malyuk, acting head of Ukraine’s Security Service.

10 children were killed during the Russian attack.

The Russian attack was on a six-car convoy of civilian vehicles fleeing southeastern Ukraine.

Ukraine police officers investigated the Russian missile strike on a civilian six-car convoy.

“The enemy once again proved that his goal is the destruction of all Ukrainians, regardless of age and gender,” Malyuk continued. “The occupiers are defeated on the battlefield and out of desperation respond to them by killing civilians.”

The Security Service said it is investigating the attack as a war crime.

Hilaree Nelson’s body found after going missing in Himalayas

A US ski mountaineer who went missing in Nepal on the world’s eighth-highest peak has been found dead, officials said.

Hilaree Nelson, 49 — who fell into a crevasse while skiing down Mount Manaslu in the Himalayas with her partner Jim Morrison — was discovered Wednesday on the south side of the mountain, officials who organized the expedition confirmed to NBC News.

Expedition company Shangri-La Nepal Trek said her body was taken by helicopter to Kathmandu, where officials will perform an autopsy.

Mountaineer Nims Purja, co-founder of the Elite Exped tour company, later shared on social media that his team led the recovery efforts.

“Our condolences to brother Jim,” he wrote.

Hilaree Nelson and Jim Morrison were both climbing and romantic partners.
AP

“[Hilaree] will be on her way home soon.”

Nelson’s death comes less than a week after she posted on Instagram about feeling less confident on the mountain. “These past weeks have tested my resilience in new ways,” she said alongside images of her and Morrison in climbing gear.

“I am challenged to find the peace and inspiration from the mountain when it’s been constantly shrouded in mist.”

Often hailed as the most prolific ski mountaineer of her generation, Nelson was the first woman to be named North Face Global Athletic team captain. In 2017, she and Morrison were the first Americans to summit India’s Papsura, or “Peak of Evil.” The feat earned Nelson the National Geographic Adventurer of the Year title in 2018.

Originally from Seattle, Nelson was based in Telluride, Colorado at the time of her death. In addition to Morrison, her romantic and climbing partner, she leaves behind two young sons and an ex-husband.

Jim Morrison, second right, mourns as Nelson’s body arrives by helicopter in Kathmandu.

Shangri-La Nepal Trek and North Face did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Teen bull rider dies from heart attack after fall at rodeo in Brazil

An 18-year-old aspiring bull rider had a heart attack and died after suffering a fall during a rodeo in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo last week.

Thiago Castilho was taking part in the Luiz Antônio Rodeo Show at the Gilberto Moreno Permanent Exhibition and Events Park on Thursday evening when tragedy struck.

Video from the event that has been circulating online shows the teen being flung from the bull’s back just eight seconds into the ride, as the Daily Mail reported.

Castilho lost his helmet and fell unconscious to the ground. He was quickly carried away by two men while a third chased off the bull.

The teen, from the city of Brodowski, who dreamed of riding bulls in the US, was rushed to a local hospital, where he went into cardiac arrest and died early Friday.

His father, local cop Jean Carlos Castilho, told the Brazilian news outlet G1 that his son had been riding horses since the age of 11, and was riding oxen by the time he turned 16.

The elder Castilho said he would often warn his son about the dangers of bull riding, but he said the youngster was committed to the risky pursuit.

“Unfortunately, that’s what rodeo is all about. It’s a dangerous sport,” Castilho said. “I always said to him, ‘My son, stop it’. (He said), ‘No, father, that’s what I want. If I die one day, I’m going to die happy, I’m going to die riding.’”

Castilho was flung from the bull’s back.
Castilho had been riding bulls since he was 11 years old.

The teen had an aspiring career in the bull riding industry.

Castilho added that his son was happy when he left home to go to the rodeo on Thursday.

Rodeo announcer Ronaldo Xavante told the outlet that the aspiring bull rider was showing a lot of promise and had even caught the attention of several national teams.

The teen was laid to rest in his hometown on Friday afternoon.
