PlayStation 5 Owners Get Up to 6 Months of Apple Music for Free: How to Claim

PlayStation 5 owners can now claim up to six months of Apple Music for free, as part of a new partnership between Sony and Apple. Unlike many other promotions online, even returning customers will be able to claim five months of Apple Music for free, as part of the promotion that can be claimed within a year. The Cupertino company previously ran a promotion that granted owners of Sony’s current-generation gaming console access to Apple TV+ for a six-month period.

As part of a new partnership with Apple, Sony announced that owners of the company’s latest console can get six months of Apple Music for free. This promotion is only applicable for users who have not tried Apple’s streaming platform — previous subscribers can claim five months of free access. You will need a PlayStation 5 and your Apple ID in order to activate the free subscription.

In order to avail of the free subscription, you must download the Apple Music app for the PlayStation 5. Open the app from the “All apps” section in Media home. and log in with your Apple ID. Accept the offer to claim your six months — or five months if you’ve used the service before — free access to Apple Music.

It is worth noting that the offer is valid for a year from the date the promotion was announced, so you should be able to claim the offer until November 15, 2024. An Apple Music subscription provides access to over 100 million songs and Dolby Atmos content with Spatial Audio support on some Apple devices, according to the company. The iPhone maker previously offered six months of Apple TV+ access to PlayStation users last year.

According to Sony’s website, customers will be able to access their free Apple Music subscription on all supported platforms once they claim the offer on their device. The company’s music streaming platform is supported on a range of Apple’s devices, including the iPhone, iPad, Mac, HomePod, Apple Watch, and the Apple TV. It is also available on Android smartphones, Windows (via the Microsoft Store), and via a range of other smart speakers including Amazon, Google Nest, and Sonos.

iPhone 14 Users Get Free One-Year Extension for Emergency SOS via Satellite Feature

Apple introduced the Emergency SOS via satellite for all iPhone 14 users in November 2022. When there are no other options for contacting emergency services, emergency SOS via satellite feature can help users get in touch with them. Compatible iPhone models make an effort to link customers to necessary assistance via satellite-based communication in the event they are unable to reach emergency services because they are outside the coverage area of cellular and Wi-Fi networks. The feature has been reported to be life-saving in several situations so far. Initially provided for free for two years, the emergency SOS feature will now be available for longer for iPhone 14 users at no additional cost.

The iPhone maker confirmed in a press release that it is extending the two-year free trial of the Emergency SOS via satellite feature for iPhone 14 users by another year. “We are so happy iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 users can take advantage of this groundbreaking service for two more years for free,” Kaiann Drance, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide iPhone Product Marketing, said in the release.

According to Apple, the free trial will be extended for iPhone 14 users who have activated their device in a country that supports Emergency SOS via satellite prior to 12am PT (1:30am IST) on November 15, 2023. Currently, Emergency SOS via satellite is available in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, the UK and the US. There’s no word on when the feature would make its way to India.

Apple launched the iPhone 14 lineup with four models – iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max, in September 2022. It was followed by the release of the Emergency SOS via satellite feature in November of that year, initially only in the US and Canada, and later extended to more countries.

Buidling upon the satellite connectivity capability, eligible iPhone 14 users travelling off the grid, that is a location without cellular or wireless connectivity, can also use the Find My app and communicate their location with friends and family via satellite.

Apple also introduced the Roadside Assistance via satellite feature in the US, which connects car-owners to AAA roadside assistance in case of car trouble in a region with no cellular and Wi-Fi coverage. According to Apple, the feature is included for free for two years, starting at the time of activation of a new iPhone 15 or 14 series model, and would require iOS 17 on the device to work.

The Emergency SOS via satellite service has also been extended to iPhone 15 users in 16 countries and regions, according to Apple. The company recently expanded the feature to Spain and Switzerland. Apple launched its latest iPhones at its ‘Wonderlust’ event in September.

Telegram Founder Teases visionOS App With Translucent Design for Apple Vision Pro: All You Need to Know

Telegram is working on releasing a visionOS app that will allow users to access the messaging app on the Apple Vision Pro mixed reality headset next year, and the app’s founder has revealed how the app will appear on Apple’s first spatial computer. Users will be able to access their chats via a translucent interface and dictate messages — or type them using a virtual keyboard. The app will also be able to display media like videos that appear in am immersive view.

In a video posted to his channel on Tuesday, Telegram Founder Pavel Durov showed off the first concept of the app on visionOS. While Apple showed off a few examples of app’s running on the Apple Vision Pro at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2023), this is one of the first detailed examples of an app running on Apple’s upcoming operating system for the mixed reality headset.

The video shared by Durov begins with the visionOS app list, showing the Telegram icon that is highlighted with an animation when it is selected — this is expected to be standard behaviour for apps on visionOS when it is available to customers next year.

The app demo shows Telegram for visionOS with a left-aligned list of chats in the app, and selecting a window will open it on the right. You can send messages via Siri, or use the default virtual keyboard available in visionOS. The demo shows three-dimensional animated stickers and emoji reactions, but it’s unclear whether the final version will include these animations as they appear to take over most of the display.

Telegram for visionOS will also support media such as videos, and tapping on a video will open it in an immersive view that dims the rest of the interface while the media is playing. The app will also let you view stories, located at the top left corner of the screen. Meanwhile, the demo shows small icons for profile and calls sections, but they aren’t shown in the video. More details on Telegram for visionOS are expected to be available closer to the release of the app — Apple’s mixed reality headset is expected to go on sale in the US in early 2024.

Google Paid Billions to Make Play Store and Assistant Default Apps on Samsung Phones, Google Executive Says

Google paid Samsung billions of dollars in order to make the search giant’s app store, assistant, search engine, and other services the default options on smartphones made by the latter, according to information that has emerged during the ongoing Google vs Epic Games trial. On Monday, Google Vice President for Partnerships James Kolotouros revealed that the company signed deals with various smartphone manufacturers, including the South Korean tech conglomerate, to have the Google Play store installed out-of-the-box on Android phones.

Bloomberg reports that Kolotouros’ testimony during the ongoing Google vs Epic Games trial revealed that around half of Google’s Play Store revenue comes from customers who own Samsung devices. The executive also said that the company planned to create a system to split revenue from the Play Store with smartphone makers in exchange for having the firm’s apps preinstalled on their smartphones.

Under Google’s ‘Project Banyan’ initiative that began in 2019, the company planned to spend $200 million on a deal that would have Samsung distribute its Galaxy Store app via the Play Store, according to the report. While that deal did not work out, the company agreed to pay Samsung $8 billion (roughly Rs. 66,500 crore) over a period of four years to have the Play Store exist on Samsung phones alongside the smartphone maker’s app store.

On Tuesday, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai also testified that the search giant pays Apple 36 percent of Safari search revenue in exchange for its service being the default on the company’s smartphones. Epic’s attorney reportedly asked Pichai if the amount paid by Google to Apple was higher than what it paid Samsung, and the CEO stated that it was possible but added that it was like comparing apples and oranges.

The ongoing Google vs Epic trial has seen the latter produce several pieces of evidence as it tries to build a case against the search giant’s app store. Epic alleges that Google made the deals to protect its Play Store operating profit that — estimated by the game publisher to be over $12 billion (roughly Rs. 99,700 crore) in 2021 — by preventing the spread of alternative, or third-party app stores.

Apple to Launch Refreshed iPad Air, iPad Pro Models in Two Display Sizes in 2024: Ming-Chi Kuo

Apple is planning on launching refreshed versions of the iPad Air and iPad Pro in 2024, according to TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. In a new Medium blog post, Kuo claims that Apple will release a new 12.9-inch iPad Air model for the first time, alongside the regular 10.9-inch model. The upgraded iPad Pro models will feature the company’s new M3 chip and sport OLED displays, according to the analyst. Apple could also launch new iPad mini and 11th generation iPad models next year.

According to Kuo, Apple is planning to launch a 10.9-inch iPad Air model in the first quarter of 2024, that will be accompanied by a new 12.9-inch model. It will be equipped with the same Liquid Retina display as the smaller iPad Air, but will offer better performance thanks to an oxide backplane (the combination of the thin film transistor (TFT) and the substrate used for the display) that is also used on Apple’s current-generation iPad Pro models with Mini-LED displays.

The analyst states that Apple will also launch two new iPad Pro models that will ditch Mini-LED displays for OLED screens, between the first and second quarters of 2024. These models are expected to sport a new form factor and will be powered by Apple’s latest M3 chip — offering better display quality and power efficiency compared to existing iPad Pro models. A market research firm recently predicted that the larger iPad Pro model will sport a slightly larger 13-inch display.

Kuo predicts that Apple will ship around 6 to 8 million iPad Pro models in 2024, attributing the prediction for lower shipments to a possible price hike due to the addition of OLED screens. Meanwhile, the larger iPad Pro model could also face competition from the company’s purported 12.9-inch iPad Air model.

In the second half of 2024, Apple could launch a new iPad mini model, while the company is also expected to launch a refreshed 11th generation iPad, while production of the 9th Gen model — the last one to feature a Lightning port — will be finally phased out by the end of the year, according to Kuo.

Apple Allegedly Testing iPhone 16 Pro Prototype With Hole-Punch Display

iPhone 16 series with at least four models — iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max — is likely to launch in late 2024, but we are already seeing multiple leaks about the upcoming lineup. Apple will reportedly pack a hole-punch cutout on the display of the iPhone 16 Pro, replacing the distinctive Dynamic Island feature. The Dynamic Island debuted last year exclusively on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Apple equipped the pill-shaped cutout on all four iPhone 15 models this year.

Tipster Majin Bu (@MajinBuOfficial) on X claimed that Apple is currently testing a prototype version of the iPhone 16 Pro with a hole-punch cutout instead of the Dynamic Island. The final decision on the design might not be made until March next year. Further, the tipster states that the hole-punch-style display design will likely arrive with the iPhone 17. He has also shared a redesign of the potential change on the micro-blogging platform.

Apple introduced the software-based Dynamic Island feature on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max last year. The Dynamic Island conceals the Face ID sensors and front-facing camera. It provides two separate cutouts on the display and integrates with iOS. Users can interact with the Dynamic Island to manage notifications, access Live Activities, and audio playback. This year, Apple has added Dynamic Island to the standard iPhone 15 (Review) models as well.

Display industry analyst Ross Young earlier opined that the entire iPhone 16 lineup will include the dynamic island next year and non-Pro models would match the screen sizes of the Pro models. According to him, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will feature around 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch display sizes, respectively.

Over the past few weeks, the iPhone 16 series has been tipped multiple times. The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max could be powered by an A18 Pro Bionic chip based on a 3nm process, while the normal iPhone 16 models will get a toned-down version of the A17 Pro chip. Further, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max models launching in 2024 might get around 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch display sizes, respectively. Apple is said to retain the Snapdragon X70 modem in the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus. Further, the Pro models are said to offer Wi-Fi 7 connectivity and might get a new ultra-wide lens on the rear.

Apple Vision Pro 2 Specifications Leak, Could Feature Redesigned Rear Strap: Report

Apple Vision Pro 2 — the second-generation spatial computer from Apple — is reportedly in development and specifications of the wearable headset have now leaked online. The company’s first Apple Vision Pro model will go on sale for the first time in 2024, but the firm is already tipped to be working on a new Vision Pro model that could arrive at a cheaper price point. The headset could come with changes to the rear strap — offering a more simplified design.

A MacRumors report citing unnamed sources states that the second-generation Apple Vision Pro headset will be equipped with two Micro OLED displays with semi-automatic interpupillary distance (IPD) adjustment, a TrueDepth camera, four computer vision cameras, two RGB cameras, two low-light infrared illuminators, and a range of sensors also found on mobile devices such as a gyroscope and accelerometer.

The second-generation Apple Vision Pro is codenamed Project Alaska and has an internal identifier N109, according to the report. Bearing a similar resemblance to the first-generation model that was unveiled at WWDC 2023, the Apple Vision Pro 2 will reportedly feature redesigned, flatter rear strap that bear a simpler design and appearance compared to the one on the first headset.

Another change to the next wearable spatial computer from Apple will be the location of the speakers. While unveiling the headset, Apple stated that the Vision Pro would have an audio module located at the wearer’s temples with speakers aimed at the wearer’s ear. However, the second-generation headset may not be equipped with these speakers and instead come with support for an external audio accessory, according to the report.

Last month, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman revealed in his Power On newsletter that Apple was working on an Apple Vision headset model with fewer sensors and a cheaper price tag. In order to lower the price of the headset, Apple would need to cut a notable feature found on the Vision Pro — EyeSight. This feature displays the wearer’s eyes on a curved OLED panel outside the headset, when they are not using the headset in immersive mode.

According to the report, the Apple Vision Pro 2 could be unveiled by the company in 2026. However, it is worth taking this information with a pinch of salt as there is no word from the company on this front. The company is expected to launch the Vision Pro headset in the US starting in early 2024, according to details shared by the company earlier this year.

Apple Hopes AI-Infused iOS 18 Update Will Help Sell iPhone 16 Series Lacking Major Hardware Upgrades: Gurman

Apple’s iOS 18 update — expected to arrive next year alongside the purported iPhone 16 series — is more ‘critical’ than usual, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. In his weekly newsletter, Gurman states that Apple’s next major operating system update is expected to bring major improvements over iOS 17 and is expected to help the company sell its next generation of smartphones. Apple recently confirmed that the company is working on adding features powered by artificial intelligence (AI) to the iOS 18 update.

According to details shared by Gurman in his weekly Power On newsletter, Apple’s iPhone 16 isn’t expected to offer extensive hardware upgrades next year, which means that the iOS 18 update needs to be “extra impressive” to convince customers to upgrade to the successors to the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max models unveiled this year.

In order to ensure the code for the iOS 18 update is stable and bug-free, the company reportedly paused development recently, in an attempt to weed out issues that were previously undetected. Gurman says that the week-long pause in development has delayed the company’s development towards the second milestone — adding that there are four such six-week milestones before Apple unveils its operating system updates every year at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June.

One of the reasons why Apple will need its code to be bug free is because iOS 18 is expected to bring “major new features and designs” — after years of relatively iterative iOS version updates, Gurman says, citing Apple’s senior management. it is currently unclear how many of these features will be available on previous iPhone models that are eligible to receive the update.

Apple’s rivals have already announced AI-powered features that are either rolling out to users, or expected to roll out in the coming months — including Microsoft Copilot on Windows 11 and Google Assistant with Bard. Siri is expected to get a few AI-powered upgrades this year, powered by Apple’s large language model (LLM). Other apps that will reportedly receive AI-backed upgrades include Pages, Keynote, Numbers, and Apple Music. We can expect to hear more about Apple’s software updates in the coming months.

iPhone SE 4 to Feature Single Rear Camera, Sport Upgraded Design Based on iPhone 14 Chassis: Report

iPhone SE 4 specifications have leaked again, giving tech enthusiasts an idea of what to expect from Apple’s purported successor to the iPhone SE (2022). Apple’s third-generation midrange iPhone SE model was launched in 2022 with a modified iPhone 8 chassis, making it the only iPhone currently sold by Apple that is equipped with a Touch ID button. Its successor is tipped to sport a much more modern design, with a larger screen, a display notch, and support for Face ID.

MacRumors reports that Apple is working on an upcoming model — codenamed Ghost and internally identified as D59 — that will be launched as the iPhone SE 4. Unlike it’s predecessor, the next model in the iPhone SE series of smartphones will closely resemble Apple’s recent smartphone models, according to the publication.

The iPhone SE 4 will be housed in a slightly modified iPhone 14 chassis, according to specifications obtained by the publication from unnamed sources. Apple’s previous generation handset measures 146.7×71.5×7.8mm and weighs 172g. While the measurements of the chassis might be similar to the iPhone 14, it will reportedly be 6g lighter as the company only plans to equip the handset with a single rear camera.

Apple’s iPhone SE models are equipped with one rear camera, while the standard and Pro models feature dual and triple rear camera setups, respectively. According to the report, the iPhone SE 4 will be equipped with a 48-megapixel rear camera codenamed Portland. The rear panel could closely resemble the one on the iPhone 14, aside for the single rear camera.

Previous reports have suggested that the iPhone SE 4 will come with a feature that was introduced on the iPhone 15 Pro models this year — a dedicated Action button that replaces the company’s mute switch. The new button can also be programmed to perform other functions. Just like the iPhone 15 series of smartphones, the iPhone SE 4 is also expected to be equipped with a USB Type-C port, in order to comply with common charger regulations in the EU, India, and California.

Tata Reportedly Completes Wistron India Takeover, Set to Become First Indian iPhone Manufacturer

The Tata Group has reportedly completed its takeover of Apple supplier Wistron India, bringing the Indian tech conglomerate one step closer to becoming the first Indian firm to assemble Apple’s iPhone models in the country. Takeover discussions began a year ago, and Tata already supplies components for the Cupertino company’s smartphones in Tamil Nadu. However, the acquisition of Wistron’s production lines in India will allow the company to assemble iPhone models like Foxconn and Pegatron, two of Apple’s suppliers that assemble the phones in India.

The Economic Times reports that the Tata Group has signed a binding share purchase agreement to acquire 100 percent equity stake in Wistron India. The deal to acquire the Indian unit from Singapore-based SMS Infocomm and Wistron Hong Kong, is worth a total of $750 million (roughly Rs. 6,250 crore), according to the report, and Tata will pay $125 million (roughly Rs. 1,040 crore) to acquire Wistron’s assembly lines in India.

While the Tata Group was already producing some components for Apple in India at its plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, the Wistron India acquisition allows it to become a full-fledged iPhone assembler. Apple has other suppliers in India like Foxconn and Pegatron that assemble the iPhone 15, iPhone 14, and other recent models, but Tata will be the first Indian firm to manufacture the handsets in the country.

Earlier this month, TF Securities International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that Apple would lower its production scale in two regions in China considerably next year. Meanwhile, the percentage of iPhone units made in India that are shipped globally is expected to rise from 14 percent to between 20 to 25 percent by 2024.

Kuo also claims that the development of the iPhone 17 — the successor to the purported iPhone 16 that is likely to launch in 2024 — is set to happen outside China for the first time. Apple will start the new product introduction (NPI) process for the iPhone 17 in India, during the second half of 2024, according to Kuo. Based on its annual release cycle, Apple’s iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 series are expected to be released in 2024 and 2025, respectively.
