Apple Tipped to be Working on a Foldable Device With a Large Display

Apple is reportedly working on a new category of products. The Cupertino-based tech giant is tipped to have a foldable device under development. Reports suggest that it could carry a larger screen compared to most foldable smartphones currently available in the market. The model has also been speculated to be comparable to the latest iPad Mini. A recent report also tipped the launch timeline of this rumoured Apple foldable device.

A report by The Elec claims that Apple is working on a foldable device, tipped to be a smartphone with a large display. The report says that the inner screen of this purported book-style foldable may measure around 7 to 8-inch, particularly anywhere between 7.6 and 8.4-inch.

If true, this device could be Apple’s first foldable smartphone or tablet. The report also claims that the Apple foldable may launch either by 2026 or 2027.

The rumoured size of the Apple foldable smartphone may replace the iPad Mini, which was refreshed in 2021 and carries an 8.3-inch Liquid Retina IPS LCD screen. This model currently starts in India at Rs. 49,900. The 2021 iPad Mini is powered by an in-house A15 Bionic chipset. It is available in storage variants of 64GB and 256GB and in Pink, Purple, Starlight, and Space Grey colour options.

An earlier report claimed that Apple is working towards upgrading the iPad Mini with an OLED display. It is also likely to feature a larger display compared to the current model. The screen of the iPad Mini, tipped to launch in 2026, could measure 8.7-inch, a good 0.4-inch bigger than the current iPad model. It is, however, still claimed to be able to retain its smallest iPad status.

Apple to Launch Refreshed iPad Air, iPad Pro Models in Two Display Sizes in 2024: Ming-Chi Kuo

Apple is planning on launching refreshed versions of the iPad Air and iPad Pro in 2024, according to TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. In a new Medium blog post, Kuo claims that Apple will release a new 12.9-inch iPad Air model for the first time, alongside the regular 10.9-inch model. The upgraded iPad Pro models will feature the company’s new M3 chip and sport OLED displays, according to the analyst. Apple could also launch new iPad mini and 11th generation iPad models next year.

According to Kuo, Apple is planning to launch a 10.9-inch iPad Air model in the first quarter of 2024, that will be accompanied by a new 12.9-inch model. It will be equipped with the same Liquid Retina display as the smaller iPad Air, but will offer better performance thanks to an oxide backplane (the combination of the thin film transistor (TFT) and the substrate used for the display) that is also used on Apple’s current-generation iPad Pro models with Mini-LED displays.

The analyst states that Apple will also launch two new iPad Pro models that will ditch Mini-LED displays for OLED screens, between the first and second quarters of 2024. These models are expected to sport a new form factor and will be powered by Apple’s latest M3 chip — offering better display quality and power efficiency compared to existing iPad Pro models. A market research firm recently predicted that the larger iPad Pro model will sport a slightly larger 13-inch display.

Kuo predicts that Apple will ship around 6 to 8 million iPad Pro models in 2024, attributing the prediction for lower shipments to a possible price hike due to the addition of OLED screens. Meanwhile, the larger iPad Pro model could also face competition from the company’s purported 12.9-inch iPad Air model.

In the second half of 2024, Apple could launch a new iPad mini model, while the company is also expected to launch a refreshed 11th generation iPad, while production of the 9th Gen model — the last one to feature a Lightning port — will be finally phased out by the end of the year, according to Kuo.

Apple to Debut Apple Pencil 3 With Replaceable Tips This Week Instead of Refreshed iPad Models: Report

Apple is reportedly planning to unveil new models of its iPad lineup this week, with the iPad, iPad Air, and iPad mini said to be getting refreshed. The new iPad models could get updated chipsets, with the new iPad Air likely to come with an M2 chip. According to a new report, however, the Cupertino, California-based tech giant seems to be gearing up to launch a new Apple Pencil instead. Apple is believed to be close to launching the Apple Pencil 3. The iPhone maker currently sells the first and second generations of Apple Pencil, compatible with its iPad models.

According to a report in Japanese outlet MacOtakara, Apple will likely launch the third-generation Apple Pencil this week. The Apple Pencil 3 will reportedly come with replaceable magnetic tips. The same was confirmed by tipster Majin Bu on X (formerly Twitter), as well. “Based on what my source reported the new Apple Pencil 3 will come with interchangeable magnetic tips (for drawing, technical drawing and painting),” the tipster said in their post.

Apple has not officially announced plans to launch iPad refreshes, Apple Pencil or any other devices. Several reports, however, have said that the company is likely to bring new iPad models this week. A report from Supercharged claimed that the iPad Air model could be refreshed with an M2 chip, while the iPad mini, which currently runs on Apple’s A15 Bionic, could get the A16 Bionic SoC.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, however, said in his weekly newsletter that while Apple was working on new iPad models, a launch this week was unlikely. If the new report is to be believed, however, the Apple Pencil 3 could soon be on its way.

Earlier this year, Apple reportedly filed a patent for an optical sensor on its next-generation Apple Pencil that could allow the device to copy the texture and the colour from the surface of an item.

Apple currently sells the second-generation Apple Pencil at Rs. 11,900. The Apple Pencil 2 features wireless pairing and charging and attaches magnetically to your iPad device. It is compatible with iPad Pro models, iPad Air, and iPad mini. The first-generation Apple Pencil, on the other hand, is priced at Rs. 9,500 and pairs and charges via a lightening connector on top.

Apple Plans to Launch Refreshed iPad Models With Faster Chips This Week: Reports

Apple is planning to launch refreshed versions of its existing iPad lineup later this week, according to two reports. The Cupertino company is said to be preparing to launch an updated iPad, iPad Air, and iPad mini that could be announced in the coming days. However, these new models are unlikely to debut with major changes to their specifications, aside from the chipset. Meanwhile, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman claims in his weekly newsletter that Apple is working on updated iPad models but says an imminent launch is unlikely.

A Supercharged report citing sources familiar with Apple’s plans claims that the company will launch refreshed iPad models this week, including a new iPad Air model with an updated M2 chip. On the other hand, the iPad mini, which is currently powered by Apple’s A15 Bionic chip, could feature the A16 Bionic processor found on the iPhone 15. The publication previously reported that Apple’s next iPad mini model would ship with a fix for the “jelly scrolling” issue that affects the current-generation model.

As these are minor hardware upgrades for Apple’s existing devices, the company will reportedly announce the refreshed versions via press releases on the company’s website and its YouTube channel, instead of a virtual or in-person event. Apple also announces new colour options for its current generation iPhone every year using the same method.

9to5Mac states that it has corroborated the Supercharged report with its own sources, stating that the announcement could take place as early as Tuesday, October 17. However, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman states in his Power On newsletter that while refreshes for the iPad, iPad Air, and iPad mini are currently being developed by Apple with more powerful chips, he does not believe “updates of any significance are imminent”.

Meanwhile, Gurman states that a refreshed version of the MacBook Pro with Apple’s yet-to-be-announced M3 Pro and M3 Max chips are nearing the mass production stage and would be launched between early spring and spring next year. The Bloomberg reporter says that, an M3-powered MacBook Air will take longer to arrive — sometime around the second half of 2024.

According to Gurman, the company is also working on technology that would allow it to wirelessly turn on an iPhone inside its retail stores and install the latest operating system version, then power the phone off. This could help the company deliver its smartphones with the latest iOS version that includes the latest bug fixes and improvements, before the device is purchased.
