iOS 18 With Home Screen Customisation, Improved Privacy Controls Unveiled at WWDC 2024

iOS 18 was unveiled at Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) event on Monday, along with several new features and capabilities with artificial intelligence, as well as Home Screen customisation options. The latest version of iOS will add support for vastly improved control centre options along with support for controls from third party apps, according to the company. iOS 18 also takes advantage of Apple’s processors to deliver new features that will be available on eligible iPhone models later this year, when the iOS 18 update rolls out.

Apple is also improving privacy features on iOS 18 including the ability to control how data is shared with apps. With iOS 18, users will be able to share specific contacts with apps instead of providing access to their entire contact list. Meanwhile, users will also be able to lock certain apps from their home screen, preventing unauthorised users to access these apps without biometric authentication or the device’s passcode.

Siri is getting an upgrade with iOS 18 to make the assistant more conversational, alongside a new interface and app icon. Apple says the virtual assistant will allow users to Type to Siri alongside using voice commands, depending on where they are. Siri is also set to get On-Screen Awareness features powered by Apple Intelligence, the company’s privacy focussed artificial intelligence (AI) system that will be rolled out later this year. Apple Intelligence will be available in beta form in English (US) and only on two smartphones — the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

The Messages app will gain support for new features with iOS 18, including support for RCS messaging, text formatting, and using emoji in Tapback responses. Users with an iPhone 14 and newer models in supported regions will also be able to use satellite connectivity to send texts and emoji via the Messages app.

Incoming support for RCS messaging means texting between iPhone and Android smartphones will finally be on par with iMessage — at least in terms of image quality and group chats. Text formatting is already available in rival messaging apps, and will allow users to send messages with four different formatting styles.

According to the company, iOS 18 will also introduce support for third party controls in the Control Center, while users will be able to swipe across pages to see more controls and toggles. A controls gallery will also showcase all the available controls available, including those from installed third party apps, and users can select custom layouts for these toggles on iOS 18.

Other customisation options coming to iOS 18 include the ability to pick custom lock screen shortcuts or remove them. The shortcuts will also include options from the aforementioned control gallery, according to Apple.

Apple is also introducing a new Passwords app on iOS 18 that will also be available on iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia and visionOS 2, as well as Windows computers. This app will allow users to see their passwords and edit them, view verification codes, and see weak passwords or those spotted in data leaks.

iOS 18 will be compatible with the iPhone XR and newer models, up to the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which means the same models that supported the company’s current generation iOS 17 smartphone OS will be able to update to the upcoming version later this year. Just like previous versions, certain iOS 18 features won’t be visible on older models, according to the company.

iOS 18 to Let Users Customise Layout of Home Screen App Icons: Report

iOS 18, Apple’s next operating software, is expected to be announced at the annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) 2024 in June. The next iOS version is believed to bring a slew of on-device and cloud AI features. Now, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has revealed that iOS 18 will offer iPhone users control over their home screen icons and layout. It is expected to provide flexibility in managing Home Screen app icons. Apple could release the iOS 18 update for the general public in September this year.

Mark Gurman, in the latest edition of his weekly newsletter Power On, states that iOS 18 will make the handset’s home screen “more customisable.” The Bloomberg reporter however did not provide any specific details about the update.

Additionally, a report by MacRumors quoting inside sources claims that iOS 18 will give users more control over the overall appearance of the iPhone home screen. The iOS 18 update would reportedly allow users to arrange icons more freely. Through this update, Apple could let users create blank spaces, rows, and columns between app icons. Android already offers this option.

Apple is expected to preview iOS 18 at WWDC 2024. It could be available for the public later in September alongside the purported iPhone 16 series. The iOS 18 is rumoured to be compatible with all the same devices as iOS 17. Older devices like iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max models are said to offer support for the latest operating system.

The iOS 18 update is said to come with advanced artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. It could include Rich Communication Services (RCS) standard for messaging and borrow several UI components from visionOS. Apple is said to be in talks with companies including Google and OpenAI for generative AI in iOS 18.

Apple Hopes AI-Infused iOS 18 Update Will Help Sell iPhone 16 Series Lacking Major Hardware Upgrades: Gurman

Apple’s iOS 18 update — expected to arrive next year alongside the purported iPhone 16 series — is more ‘critical’ than usual, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. In his weekly newsletter, Gurman states that Apple’s next major operating system update is expected to bring major improvements over iOS 17 and is expected to help the company sell its next generation of smartphones. Apple recently confirmed that the company is working on adding features powered by artificial intelligence (AI) to the iOS 18 update.

According to details shared by Gurman in his weekly Power On newsletter, Apple’s iPhone 16 isn’t expected to offer extensive hardware upgrades next year, which means that the iOS 18 update needs to be “extra impressive” to convince customers to upgrade to the successors to the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max models unveiled this year.

In order to ensure the code for the iOS 18 update is stable and bug-free, the company reportedly paused development recently, in an attempt to weed out issues that were previously undetected. Gurman says that the week-long pause in development has delayed the company’s development towards the second milestone — adding that there are four such six-week milestones before Apple unveils its operating system updates every year at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June.

One of the reasons why Apple will need its code to be bug free is because iOS 18 is expected to bring “major new features and designs” — after years of relatively iterative iOS version updates, Gurman says, citing Apple’s senior management. it is currently unclear how many of these features will be available on previous iPhone models that are eligible to receive the update.

Apple’s rivals have already announced AI-powered features that are either rolling out to users, or expected to roll out in the coming months — including Microsoft Copilot on Windows 11 and Google Assistant with Bard. Siri is expected to get a few AI-powered upgrades this year, powered by Apple’s large language model (LLM). Other apps that will reportedly receive AI-backed upgrades include Pages, Keynote, Numbers, and Apple Music. We can expect to hear more about Apple’s software updates in the coming months.
