Curve Finance DeFi Exchange Hacked, Losses Estimated to Be Over $40 Million

The native token of one of crypto’s top decentralized exchanges tumbled after the platform said it had been “exploited” as a result of a vulnerability in a programming language.

Curve Finance, like other decentralized finance projects in crypto, relies on different kinds of software built on top of blockchain technology. A glitch in a particular version of Vyper — a programming language similar to Python and widely used in DeFi applications — led to the exploit, Curve tweeted Sunday.

Curve Finance’s CRV token has shed about 13 percent since the problem emerged and was trading at approximately 64 US cents as of 12:50pm in Singapore on Monday, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

BlockSec, which provides security audit services for crypto software, estimated the hack had already led to more than $40 million (roughly Rs. 329 crore) in losses. Tarun Chitra, chief executive officer and founder of crypto risk modeling firm Gauntlet, estimated the exploiter made away with about $20 million (roughly Rs. 164 crore) of CRV and a version of Ether.

“We are assessing the situation and will update the community as things develop,” Curve said.

The total value of assets locked on Curve Finance — the largest decentralized exchange after Uniswap — retreated to about $1.7 billion (roughly Rs. 13,987 crore) on Monday from more than $3 billion on Sunday, according to data provider DeFiLlama.

Curve’s founder Michael Egorov did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

CRV is used as collateral on a decentralized lending service known as Aave. Gauntlet’s Chitra said that so far there were no signs of “bad loans” on the Aave platform due to the slide in CRV. Aave’s token has declined about 4 percent in the past 24 hours, CoinGecko figures show.

Digital assets like Bitcoin and Ether wobbled a tad on concerns about wider potential knock-on effects but later stabilized. Bitcoin was little changed at about $29,400 (roughly Rs 24.18 lakh), while Ether was steady at $1,865 (roughly Rs. 1.53 lakh).

Hackers pilfered a record $3.8 billion (roughly Rs. 31,266 crore) worth of crypto in 2022 and Curve Finance was among the long list of organizations impacted.

The pace of incidents has cooled but the risk of security breaches still clouds decentralized finance, or DeFi, where people rely on blockchain-based software known as smart contracts to undertake activities like trading or lending.

Samsung Galaxy S24+ US Model With Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Chip Spotted on Geekbench, Performance Tipped

Samsung Galaxy S24+ is expected to debut early next year as one of the successors to the Galaxy S23 series of smartphones that were launched by Samsung in February. Months ahead of its expected debut, the handset has been spotted on a benchmarking website, which lists out some of the specifications of the phone. The upcoming S-series flagship smartphone is tipped to arrive in two versions — one powered by Qualcomm’s yet-to-be-unveiled Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, and the other powered by an in-house Exynos chip from the South Korean company.

A Geekbench listing for a smartphone with the model number SM-S926U, which is believed to be the upcoming Galaxy S24+ handset surfaced on the benchmarking website on Monday. It is listed to be powered by a chipset codenamed pineapple, which is shown to be equipped with a different cluster setup than Qualcomm’s current-generation Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 flagship SoC.

The chipset mentioned in the listing has a prime Cortex-X4 core, that has a clock speed of 3.30GHz along with three Cortex-A720 cores clocked at 3.15GHz, two Cortex-A720 cores clocked at 2.96GHz, and two Cortex-A520 cores clocked at 2.27GHz. The handset could be equipped with 8GB of memory and run on Android 14 out-of-the-box, according to the Geekbench entry.

The listing for the purported handset reveals that it has a score of 2,231 points and 6,661 points in the single-core and multi-core tests, respectively. These scores suggest that the maximum performance improvement will be 20 percent (multi-core performance) over the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset. The chipset is expected to arrive with an Adreno 750 GPU, which is said to have a 50 percent performance boost over the Adreno 740.

It is worth noting that previous reports suggest Samsung will launch the Galaxy S24 series of smartphones with Snapdragon chips in the US, while users in other regions will get Exynos-powered chipsets. This suggests that the listing for the handset is for the Galaxy S24+ US variant. Meanwhile, it is currently unclear whether the previously mentioned clock speeds of the chipset are for the vanilla Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, or a custom Snapdragon for Galaxy processor like the one launched this year.

iPhone 15 Pro to Feature Titanium Edges, Apple’s New 3nm Chip, and Repair-Friendly Internals: Mark Gurman

iPhone 15 series — comprising the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max — are expected to make their debut this year. Apple’s next generation of iPhone models are likely to bring several hardware upgrades, according to details that have recently surfaced online. The iPhone 15 models are said to feature a USB Type-C port and upgraded rear cameras, while the Pro models might feature a new 3nm chip, titanium edges, improved zoom performance, and easily repairable internals, just like the iPhone 14 that was launched last year.

In the latest edition of his weekly Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman states that Apple’s upcoming iPhone 15 Pro will drop its easily identifiable stainless steel edges, replacing it with a sturdier material — titanium. This suggests the company’s next Pro models will be more durable than their predecessors. Meanwhile, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will feature reworked internals just like last year’s iPhone 14, to make it easier to repair, he adds.

On the inside, the iPhone 15 Pro will be powered by a new 3nm chip that will bring performance improvements over last year’s Pro models, according to Gurman, who says the new processor is “noticeably snappier”. However, customers who pick up the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will reportedly get the 4nm A16 Bionic chip found on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

This year, Apple will reduce the size of the bezels around its iPhone 15 Pro series of smartphones to 1.5mm, down from 2.2mm on the 14 Pro models, using a process called “low-injection pressure over-moulding”, according to Gurman. Meanwhile, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will drop the notch in favour of the Dynamic Island that featured on last year’s Pro models.

Previous reports suggest that the upcoming iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will feature an upgraded 48-megapixel primary camera instead of the 12-megapixel one on the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, and Gurman states that the largest model — the iPhone 15 Pro Max — will offer improved optical zoom. Apple’s next-generation iPhone 15 Pro Max is tipped to feature a periscope camera, a hardware feature that is present on high-end Android smartphones.

Gurman also reiterates his previous claim that the iPhone 15 series will drop the now-outdated — and slower — Lightning connector, in favour of a USB Type-C port. Apple is expected to bring this hardware change in order to comply with EU rules that go into effect in December 2024.

Meanwhile, Apple’s plans to improve the durability of the handset with the inclusion of solid-state buttons for the volume buttons, the power button, and the mute switch — codenamed Project Bongo — has been cancelled, according to Gurman, who says that only the mute switch will be replaced by an Action button.

Unlike last year, Apple is not expected to launch a new Apple Watch SE model this year, but the upcoming Watch Series 9 models and the second-generation Apple Watch Ultra will be equipped with a new — and powerful — S9 chip, according to Gurman. Apple is expected to announce plans to launch new smartphones and smartwatch models later this year.
