Samsung Could Use Galaxy Z Fold 5’s Waterdrop Hinge Design for Foldable Notebooks: Details

Providing benefits like improved longevity and a less visible centre crease, the new waterdrop hinge design has grown popular among smartphone manufacturers looking to introduce the next generation of foldable smartphones. More recently, Samsung too joined several Chinese brands when it introduced its new foldable lineup for the year with the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Galaxy Z Flip 5. Indeed, every manufacturer uses different components to achieve the same effect. It now appears that Samsung is ready to apply the same design principles to its Galaxy Book lineup as well.

According to Korean publication TheElec, Samsung was considering applying its waterdrop hinge design from its new foldables to a bigger device. The source claims that a foldable notebook could be launched as soon as next year. For this particular foldable notebook, the waterdrop hinge would replace the regular hinge commonly found on regular notebooks from the company and other manufacturers. While the waterdrop hinge design suits the foldable display design perfectly, it also makes the whole unit lighter as well. However, the benefits end there as a waterdrop hinge reportedly also makes the notebook thicker compared to those with a regular hinge.

As per the same source, both LG and HP are also looking to make their U-shaped hinges lighter than the ones used on existing foldable notebook models. Samsung reportedly wanted to launch a foldable notebook last year itself, but held back on its decision “due to low consumer demand”. The electronics giant had also considered roping in either Samsung Display or BOE for its folding notebook’s OLED panels. For now, the brand intends to bring this bigger foldable form factor to the market in the second half of next year.

Until the launch of its Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5, Samsung had been using its older V-shaped hinge design, which resulted in a deeper and more evident crease in the centre of its folding display. Samsung’s new waterdrop hinge design holds the phone’s main display in a safer U-shape (as opposed to the earlier V-shape) position. It also makes the handset more durable when it comes to withstanding drops, which can otherwise easily damage the internal gears leading to a failure with opening the main display altogether.

Before Samsung, the waterdrop hinge has been used on a number of foldable devices by various manufacturers. This includes the Oppo Find N2, the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra, Xiaomi’s Mi Mix Fold 2, and others. However, Samsung is the only manufacturer to offer an IPX8 rating with its foldables, which currently stands as the highest rating for water resistance among similar devices.

Xiaomi to Launch MiOS as Replacement for 13-Year-Old MIUI Android Skin, Tipster Claims

Xiaomi is tipped to replace its MIUI Android skin with a new interface. Thirteen years after the Chinese smartphone maker launched the first version of MIUI for its smartphones, a tipster has claimed that the company will announce a successor called MiOS. The latest version of the skin available for eligible smartphones is MIUI 14. It is currently unclear whether MiOS will be a new Android-based operating system like Huawei’s HarmonyOS, or whether it will be an Android skin like MIUI, OxygenOS, ColorOS and Funtouch OS.

Tipster Digital Chat Station (translated from Chinese) claims in a Weibo post that Xiaomi has decided that MIUI 14 will be the “last official major version” of MIUI. The tipster goes on to state that the only shortcoming of the smartphone maker’s popular Android skin were the animation effects. Xiaomi first introduced MIUI in August 2010 and the company has released 14 major versions of the operating system so far.

Photo Credit: Weibo/ Digital Chat Station (translated from Chinese)

The Chinese smartphone maker has not announced any plans for a new operating system so far, but back in August, tipster Ice Universe (X: @UniverseIce) posted a screenshot stating that the “mios.cn” domain and MiOS trademark was issued to Xiaomi. At the time, Ice Universe has speculated that Xiaomi’s “highly customized self-developed operating system” could be on the way.

However, it is currently unclear whether Xiaomi plans to launch its own “standalone” operating system based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) — just like Huawei did with the release of HarmonyOS — or whether the purported MiOS will be released as a software layer on top of Google’s Android that is offered to manufacturers along with Google’s services.

Even if MiOS is a redesigned version of Xiaomi’s Android skin for its smartphones, the refreshed branding could help the company shed the perception that its MIUI skin features advertisements — Xiaomi’s skin has not displayed advertisements or promotions for several years, but some customers still associate the software with ads.

Xiaomi released MIUI 14 in December last year and the company also supports previously launched devices that are running on the older MIUI 13 version but still receiving security updates. MIUI 14 dropped support for smartphones running on Android 11, while introducing small refinements to the interface and a Photon Engine that was claimed to offer improved performance compared to previous versions of MIUI.

Loki Season 2 Premiere Draws 10.9 Million Viewers Globally in Just Three Days

Loki season 2 is celebrating a solid opening weekend. As per Disney, the premiere racked up an impressive 10.9 million viewers globally during its first three days, since its October 5 premiere in the US (October 6 in India, and everywhere else). With these numbers, it has become the second-most-watched premiere of 2023, sitting right behind The Mandalorian season 3, which dropped in March. A view is calculated by hours viewed divided by the total runtime of a film or show, which is the same format Netflix embraced in June. Given Loki season 2 episode 1 has a 45-minute runtime, the total viewed hours equate to 490.5 million minutes/ 8.17 million hours.

These are great numbers for Disney+, whose Marvel Cinematic Universe small-screen lineup has struggled to gain mass appeal. For instance, their newest Samuel L. Jackson-led Secret Invasion premiere only drew 994,000 viewers in the US, within the first five days. While Disney hasn’t released regional breakdowns for Loki season 2’s viewership, its popularity is clear as day, considering the streamer is confident enough to release numbers within just three days. You see, it was only recently that Disney started reporting viewership numbers, and even then, they were all based on a five-day time span. The Star Wars series Ahsoka opened to 14 million views, with two extra days, proving that Loki’s numbers are stronger.

The same five-day tally system is being applied to Disney+’s movies as well, with The Little Mermaid live-action remake pulling in 16 million views and Elemental reporting 26.4 million views. It’s not surprising to see Loki season 2 doing well, given the first season was Marvel’s most successful show, as confirmed by MCU President Kevin Feige in 2022. The new chapter sees Tom Hiddleston reprising his role as the titular God of Mischief and embarking on time-hopping adventures with an alternate version of TVA agent Mobius M. Mobius (Owen Wilson), who doesn’t recognise him. Loki’s plans to reunite with his original team hits a hurdle when his body begins to distort and plops him into past and future timelines. Oscar-winner Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once) is a new addition to the cast, playing a TVA archivist OB.

Late last month, Disney+ confirmed in an email to its Canadian subscribers that it will begin restricting password sharing, starting November 1, a lot sooner than CEO Bob Iger’s original plans. The terms were quite unclear, but it suggested that users would soon be prohibited from sharing accounts with those outside their ‘household’ — which refers to devices associated with a primary personal address. The company will constantly monitor user activity and if it detects a user breaking the rules, it will limit access to streaming or entirely terminate the account. Netflix was the first to crack down on password-sharing and in the process, gained 6 million new subscribers in July.

New episodes of Loki season 2 drop every Friday on Disney+ Hotstar.

Vivo, Transsion Holdings to Launch Smartphone With Rollable Display in 2024: Report

Vivo entered the foldable smartphone segment in April last year with the launch of the Vivo X Fold. The company followed up with the Vivo X Fold 2 with improved cameras and new internals. The Chinese smartphone brand is now looking to dip its toes into the rollable phone segment. Both Vivo and Transsion Holdings are reportedly working on slideable phones intending to launch them as early as the end of next year. The latter already previewed its slideable handset named the Tecno Phantom Ultimate in September last year. Vivo and Transsion are expected to beat Samsung in the race to release the first rollable phone.

As per a report by the Elec, both Vivo and Transsion Holdings are gearing up to unveil the world’s first rollable screen smartphone. The report quoting industry insiders notes that the handsets will debut by the end of the coming year. The rollable handsets will have a partially expanded screen and their screens will be capable of extending or shrinking with the press of a button.

If Vivo or Transsion manage to launch handsets with the rollable display form factor in 2024, they would surpass and grab some of the market share for rollable display handsets from Samsung, which is currently leading the way in the foldables market.

Transsion Holdings, which owns brands including Itel, Tecno, and Infinix, showcased its Phantom Ultimate prototype with a rollable display in September last year. At the tap of a button, the phone’s 6.55-inch display starts to expand to 7.11 inches, with a form factor of a small tablet. The Tecno Phantom Ultimate packs a low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) thin-film transistor (TFT) rollable display made by CSOT. The 7.11-inch display claimed to have a 1,596×2,296 resolution and a pixel density of 388ppi.

Other prominent handset makers including Motorola, Samsung, LG, and TCL announced similar concepts in recent years. Motorola showcased a rollable Rizr concept at the Mobile World Congress (MWC 2023). Samsung also previewed its prototypes at CES in January. Samsung’s Flex Hybrid concept has simultaneous sliding and folding capabilities and it can switch between 10.5-inch and 12.4-inch screen sizes when opened. LG, which shut down its mobile phone business in 2021, unveiled the world’s first rollable smartphone at the CES 2021. Oppo has also made a rollable phone concept with a 6.7-inch screen that can transform into a 7.4-inch mini tablet-sized display.

3Commas Tweaks Internal Security After Accounts of Some Users Were Compromised, Passwords Reset

3Commas, the provider of automated crypto trading services, has warned its community members to be alert about their account-related notifications as cyber threats loom large over the platform. Over the weekend, the platform’s team decided to deploy some changes to its existing security system after some users complained of seeing unauthorised trades placed from their accounts. This hinted the platform that it could be under attack from crypto hackers. Passwords of these accounts were also reportedly reset, hinting at the potential hack attack.

A Cloud-based crypto trading platform, 3Commas allows its users to use its trading bots to stay on top of the game. The bot efficiently making trade-related decision based on real-time market stats. The platform founded in 2017, boasts of stellar customer feedback from its community that has over 100,000 entities as part of its.

Upon internal investigation, 3Commas found that this hack only affected a few user-accounts, and its operations on the otherwise large scale, remain safe and functional.

The platform has strongly advised all its users to enable two-factor authentication (2FA) in the backdrop of this incident.

“The security incident took place mainly affected customers who had not enabled 2FA. Please note that the data accessed did not include your API secret data and account passwords. In response to the few customer reports, we took immediate measures to address the situation,” the Estonia-based company said.

3Commas, in its official post, explained the security changes it has made to its system.

“We shifted the approach to password resets and deployed an additional functionality so that now, after passwords are reset, all API connections are disabled to provide an extra layer of security. In the meantime, our services are running normally, and we will continue to operate in a state of heightened alert,” the post said.

As of now, details about the finances that may have been stolen or relocated as part of this attack remain undisclosed.

This is not the first time however, that user accounts from 3Commas have been breached by notorious cyber hacking.

In October 2022, the API keys of 3Commas were leaked, that had resulted in the leaks of unauthorised trades on the accounts of the victims.

Hackers keep targeting the crypto sector because not only are crypto transactions largely untraceable, the lack of regulations to govern the sector also gives them loopholes to get ahead of law enforcement agencies.

In the last leg of September, Web3 firm Mixin Network was hacked, leading to losses worth $200 million (roughly Rs. 1,662 crore) from its account.

In fact, the funds stolen in crypto scams, hacks, and rug pulls breached the mark of $656 million (roughly Rs. 5,454 crore) during the first half of 2023, a report by Web 3.0 security firm Beosin said in July.

Google Pixel 8a With Curved Edges, Dual Rear Cameras Spotted in Leaked Renders

Google Pixel 8a has been spotted in a set of renders that have leaked online, days after the company announced its flagship phones for the year, the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. The leaked renders suggest the handset will be powered by a 6.1-inch flat display. The handset is also shown to feature the same raised horizontal camera bar found on Google’s current-generation Pixel models. The size of the Pixel 8a is likely to be larger than that of the Pixel 8, according to information that has surfaced online.

Detailed renders of the Pixel 8a have been leaked by tipster Steve Hemmerstoffer (X: @OnLeaks) in collaboration with Smartprix. The leaked renders show the Pixel 8a in a colourway that looks quite similar to the Rose colour found on the Pixel 8 that made its debut at the company’s Made by Google 2023 hardware launch event last week. Both the front and rear sides of the phone also have a similar appearance to the standard model, but the bezels on the Pixel 8a appear slightly larger.

According to the details leaked by the tipster, the Pixel 8a will measure 152.1 x 72.6 x 8.9mm. This suggests that the height, width and thickness of the purported successor to the Pixel 7a will be dropped by 0.1mm, 0.3mm, and 0.1mm, respectively. Unlike the Pixel 7a, next year’s midrange model could feature more rounded corners, according to the leaked images.

The rear panel on the Pixel 8a is equipped with a raised camera module that appears to be nearly identical to the one on the Pixel 8. It is shown to feature two rear cameras aligned to the left, while an LED flash is located on the right side. The rear panel also includes the Google logo in the middle.

The tipster has also shared 360-degree renders of the purported Pixel 8a that show the handset with a USB Type-C port at the bottom of the display flanked by speaker grilles. On the front of the handset is a centre-aligned hole punch cutout that houses the selfie camera, and the top of the display houses a slim ear speaker for calls.

The top edge of the phone has an antenna line that could be used for cellular connectivity or — as the publication points out — for ultra-wideband (UWB) support. Sales of Google’s Pixel 8 series of smartphones in India are yet to begin and the company hasn’t announced plans to launch a midrange version of its flagship smartphones, but we can expect to learn more about the Pixel 8a in months leading up to its expected launch next year.

iQoo 12 Series Camera Details Leaked; Tipped to Get 64-Megapixel Telephoto Camera

The iQoo 12 series is likely to launch later this year as the successor to the iQoo 11 lineup. The iQoo 11 and iQoo 11 Pro were initially introduced in China in December 2021. The base model later saw a global release. The phones are powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoCs and support proprietary fast-charging solutions. Details of the iQoo 12 handsets had been leaked previously. Like the preceding series, the iQoo 12 lineup will likely accommodate a base and a pro model. Now, a leak suggests the camera details of the upcoming iQoo 12 models.

Tipster Digital Chat Station (translated from Chinese) noted in a Weibo post that the iQoo 12 models will feature a 50-megapixel OmniVision OV50H sensor with optical image stabilisation (OIS) and another 50-megapixel Samsung ISOCELL JN1 sensor with an ultra-wide-angle lens. The leak added that the phones will come with a 64-megapixel OV64B telephoto sensor with 3x zoom and OIS support.

Previous leaks suggested that the iQoo 12 phones are expected to sport Samsung E7 AMOLED displays with a resolution of 2K and a refresh rate of up to 144Hz. They are also said to come with metal bodies.

An even earlier report suggested that the iQoo 12 models are likely to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoCs paired with Adreno 750 GPUs with up to 24GB of RAM and 1TB of inbuilt storage. They are said to ship with Android 14-based Origin OS.

The base iQoo 12 variant is tipped to be backed by a 5,000mAh battery that supports 100W wired fast charging. The iQoo 12 Pro model, on the other hand, is expected to support 200W wired fast charging via a USB Type C port. For security, the phone is tipped to be equipped with an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner.

Windows 12 Release Date Possibly Leaked by Intel: All You Need to Know

Windows 12 release date might have been leaked recently and could arrive on computers in the coming months. Microsoft’s purported successor to Windows 11 is expected to be the next major refresh after Windows 11 was released in October 2021 with visual changes elements like the taskbar, Windows Explorer, as well as support for widgets. It’s worth noting that Microsoft is yet to officially reveal any details of plans to launch the next version of its Windows desktop operating system.

A transcript of a recent fireside chat at the Citi 2023 Global Technology Conference reveals that Intel CFO David Zinsner might have leaked the release date for Windows 12. “We actually think ’24 is going to be a pretty good year for client, in particular, because of the Windows refresh,” the transcript quotes Zinsner as saying. Microsoft regularly issues updates and patches for its operating system, so a refresh of Windows suggests a new version is on the way.

“And we still think that the installed base is pretty old and does require a refresh and we think next year maybe the start of that, given the Windows catalyst. So, we’re optimistic about how things will play out beginning in ’24,” Zinsner adds, in response to a question about whether Intel expects its gains to continue after the company recently started to gain back market share.

It is interesting to note the timing of the Intel executive’s mention of the Windows “refresh” and “catalyst” come soon after the company unveiled its Intel Core Ultra processors that will arrive on December 14. Intel’s Meteor Lake chips, unlike their Raptor Lake predecessor, will be aimed at laptops. However, with the purported arrival of Intel’s Arrow Lake-S CPUs — with up to 24 cores — expected in 2024, Intel could have new desktop CPUs ready in time for the next version of Windows.

Intel’s new Meteor Lake chips are the first processors from the chipmaker to be equipped with a dedicated neural processing unit (NPU) for improved on-device AI performance. The new chiplet design also includes the first integrated NPU AI engine. Meanwhile, the Windows 11 23H2 update is already introducing new AI features such as Windows Copilot, and Microsoft is likely to double down on the AI features and technology it is working on, if it plans to release the next version of Windows in the coming months.
