Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Chip Tipped to Cross 2 Million Mark on AnTuTu Benchmark Test With This Hardware Change

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip performance details have leaked online, weeks ahead of the expected debut of the upcoming processor for flagship smartphones. This is not the first time that the upcoming mobile chipset has been spotted in performance benchmark tests online, but the latest tests indicate that the chip has surpassed the 2 million mark on the AnTuTu benchmark test. The chipmaker is yet to officially reveal details of the purported Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip that is expected to be unveiled at the upcoming Snapdragon Summit 2023 event later this month.

In a post on Weibo, the Chinese microblogging website, tipster Digital Chat Station (translated from Chinese) suggested that there could be a significant difference in performance between the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and its predecessor. The benchmark details crossed 2 million points, the tipster claims. The CPU performance benchmark score was over 440,000 points, while the GPU was greater than 840,000 points.

For reference, the AnTuTu score of last year’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 was around 1.6 million points, with roughly 380,000 points in the CPU test, while the GPU score was around 600,000 points. The tipster also claims that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will feature “self-developed GPU improvements”, which might explain the bigger jump in performance, compared to the CPU.

The purported score of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is much higher than the previous reported score, which was 17,71,106 points. At the time, the score of the chipset was already higher than the top three devices at the time — the iQoo Neo 8 Pro (1,358,352), Oppo Find X6 Pro (1,307,816), and OnePlus 11 5G (1,324,440).

The tipster notes that typical smartphone hardware was not used to run the benchmark test — a prototype handset was utilised, comprising the new chip along with 16GB of LPDDR5T RAM and an enhanced version of 1TB of UFS 4.0 inbuilt storage.

Announced earlier this year, LPDDR5T (Low Power Double Data Rate 5 Turbo) RAM supports operations at a 9.6Gbps data rate, 16 percent faster than LPDDR5X RAM. However, Digital Chat Station points out that the devices that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 might run next are likely to feature LPDDR5X RAM that is also available on current flagship smartphones, which means the benchmarks on future smartphones are unlikely to be as high as this prototype device.

WhatsApp May Soon Bring a Secret Code Feature for Locked Chats: Report

WhatsApp introduced Chat Lock functionality that lets users lock specific chats using their fingerprint, facelock or passcodes back in May this year. Now, the Meta-owned instant messaging platform is reportedly testing a new secret code feature that will give users even more control over their locked chats. This would reportedly allow users to choose a custom password for their protected chat folder. The upcoming security feature has been spotted in WhatsApp for Android beta v2.23.21.9, which is available via the Google Play Beta program.

According to a report by WhatsApp features tracker WABetaInfo, WhatsApp will soon allow people to choose a custom password for their protected chat folder. This secret code feature would add another layer of security for sensitive conversations. Users can enter the secret code to access their locked chats from the search bar of the app. Configuring a secret code will reportedly let users lock chats from companion devices as well.

The messaging platform is said to be rolling out the update via the Google Play Beta program, with the 2.23.21.9 beta for Android. The feature is not available for testers now and is expected to be released in a future update of the app.

The publication has managed to include a preview of the secret code creation feature, offering users a glimpse at it. As per the preview, WhatsApp suggests using a word or a simple emoji for quick access. Users might be able to change or remove the secret code at any time.

WhatsApp released the Chat Lock feature in May for both Android and iOS users. It allows users to keep their messages and conversations private and secure by locking them using a passcode, fingerprint, or face unlock options. This feature will move locked chat threads to a different folder to ensure the privacy of conversations, even if someone did manage to gain access to the user’s phone. Notifications from these chats will neither show the sender’s name, nor the message preview.

Oppo Find N3 With Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, 12GB RAM Surfaces on Geekbench

Oppo Find N2 with Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC debuted in China in December last year. Now, Oppo seems to be gearing up to unveil a new book-style foldable smartphone — the Oppo Find N3. Ahead of any official announcement, the Chinese variant of the upcoming Find series smartphone has allegedly surfaced on the Geekbench benchmarking site. The Oppo Find N3 is listed with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, paired with 12GB RAM. It is expected to debut in international markets with the OnePlus Open moniker.

An Oppo handset has been spotted on the Geekbench website with the model number Oppo PHN110 on October 8. The listing, believed to be that of the Chinese variant of Oppo Find N3, indicates that it runs on the Android 13 operating system. As per the listing, an octa-core chipset with the codename ‘Kalama’ will power the phone. It shows a prime CPU core with a maximum clock speed of 3.19GHz, four cores capped at 2.80GHz and three cores capped at 2.02GHz. All these hints at the presence of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC on the upcoming handset.

The Geekbench listing suggests 2,037 points in single-core testing and 5,485 points in multi-core testing. As per the listing, the handset could pack 10.92GB of RAM, this could be translated to 12GB on paper.

Recently, a global variant of the Oppo Find N3 also surfaced on Geekbench with model number CPH2499 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. The global variant was found with higher scores of 2,023 and 5,652 in single-core and multi-core testing, respectively compared to the Chinese variant.

The Oppo Find N3 is expected to debut in global markets outside China as the OnePlus Open. Last year’s Oppo Find N2 remained exclusive to the Chinese market while the Oppo Find N2 Flip went global.

As per past leaks, the Oppo Find N3 will feature a 7.82-inch (2,268 x 2,440 pixels) OLED inner display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a 6.31-inch (1,116 x 2,484 pixels) OLED outer screen with a 120Hz refresh rate. It could feature a triple rear camera setup, comprising a 48-megapixel primary camera, a 48-megapixel secondary camera, and a 64-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom. For selfies and video chats, it might get a 32-megapixel or 20-megapixel front-facing camera. It is said to pack a 4,805mAh battery with support for 100W fast charging. The OnePlus Open may also debut with similar specifications.

Google Pixel 8 Pro’s Manual Camera Controls Reportedly Work on All Pixel Phones With Tensor Chip

Google Pixel 8 series, which includes the Pixel 8 and the Pixel 8 Pro, was unveiled at the company’s Made by Google launch event on October 4. The new Pixel phones are powered by Google’s latest Tensor G3 chip, run on Android 14 out-of-the-box, and feature upgraded cameras. The Pixel 8 Pro sports a 50-megapixel primary camera, a 64-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, and a third 48-megapixel telephoto camera on its back. The top-of-the-line phone also comes with pro controls in the camera app that lets users adjust camera settings. An X user, however, has found that the pro controls, exclusive to the Pixel 8 Pro, can be accessed on any Pixel phone with a Tensor chipset.

The new pro controls for the camera app on Pixel 8 Pro lets users adjust camera specific settings like ISO, shutter speed, aperture size, among others, bringing a professional photography experience to Pixel phones. The feature is supposed to be locked to the Pixel 8 Pro, but X (formerly Twitter) user Kamila (@Za_Raczke) has found that it can be enabled on older Pixel phones running on Tensor chips, too.

Kamila posted on X, showing the pro camera features running on a Pixel 7 Pro. In her thread, she said that she received early access to the Google Camera apk from the new phone and ran mods on it to make the feature work on an older Pixel. “…Turns out it fully works on any Tensor Pixel, from the 6 to the 7 Pro,” she said.

The user also posted photos of the pro control feature running on an older Pixel phone, that show the ability to adjust focus of the camera lens manually. The override grants users full control of the new camera app, letting them switch between lenses as well. According to Kamila, the pro controls seem to be limited the to Pixel 8 Pro officially via an artificial software lock, which when bypassed would allow the feature to run on Pixel phones going back to Pixel 6, which runs on the first Tensor chip from Google.

Google Pixel 8 series also launched with Google’s AI-backed features like Photo Unblur. The Pixel 8 Pro sports a 6.7-inch Quad-HD (1,344×2,992 pixels) display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The flagship handset is priced at Rs. 1,06,999 for the 128GB storage model. The Pro model comes in Bay, Obsidian, and Porcelain colourways.

Barbie Director Greta Gerwig Reportedly Fought to Keep ‘I’m Just Ken’ Dance Sequence in the Film

Barbie director Greta Gerwig has revealed that the iconic ‘I’m Just Ken’ dance sequence from the film was almost removed from the script. Speaking to Succession creator Jesse Armstrong at the BFI London Film Festival, the filmmaker claimed that the studio executives at Warner Bros. questioned her at a ‘big meeting’ whether the standout scene was necessary. However, she stood her ground and cited the 1952 movie Singin’ in the Rain’s ballet scene as a reference point for Barbie’s ‘dream ballet,’ where all the Kens would be dressed in black and dance across a wide-open, pink and blue-hued space, as they work out their identity issues.

“It just said in the script, ‘And then it becomes a dream ballet and they work it out through dance’,” Gerwig said in the interview (via Variety). “There was a big meeting that was like, ‘Do you need this?’ And I was like, ‘Everything in me needs this.’ They were like, ‘What do you even mean? What is a dream ballet?’” The scene in question does come across as odd in screenplay format, as it just transitions from a musical fight sequence at the Barbie Land beach into a vast emptiness, with Ryan Gosling and Simu Liu beaching off. It appears as though WB was worried whether the quirky change in environment would sit well with a mainstream audience. Also, Barbie was never intended as a musical — in fact, the ‘I’m Just Ken’ track initially didn’t have a solid place until Gerwig heard and ‘loved‘ the small version composer Mark Ronson wrote.

The song is now a certified hit, with over 78.5 million streams on Spotify and 10 million views on YouTube, at the time of writing. Gosling, who previously recorded songs for his 2016 film La La Land, was the vocalist for his part in Barbie as well and placed at No. 87 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in August. “I was like if people could follow that in Singin’ in the Rain, I think we’ll be fine. I think people will know what this is. So that was the big reference point,” Gerwig explained, adding that she was equally stressed about the sequence totally failing. After all, this wasn’t the only time filming was interrupted, as a Time Magazine story revealed that Mattel president and COO Richard Dickson flew over to the location to ‘argue’ with director Gerwig and lead Margot Robbie over an undisclosed scene that felt ‘off-brand’ to him. The duo changed his mind by performing the scene before him, and it stayed.

Barbie is now the biggest film of 2023, having grossed $1.43 billion (about Rs. 11,901 crore) at the global box office, sitting right above The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Oppenheimer. It perched Gerwig as the first-ever woman director to join the billion-dollar club, and follows the stereotypical Barbie doll (Robbie) living her perfect life in the pink-hued Barbie Land until she starts turning sentient and is forced to face an existential crisis. Wanting to reverse those conflicting thoughts, she sets off on a journey to the real world with Ken (Gosling), where she learns about patriarchy, the troubled lives of women and how barbie dolls have perpetuated stereotypes and led young girls to have a skewed perception of themselves. The film is slated to release on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-Ray, and DVD formats on October 17.

Barbie is now available to watch digitally, and is still showing in select theatres across the world.

Honor Magic Vs 2, Honor Watch 4 Pro Launch Date Set For October 12: All Details

Honor Magic Vs 2 foldable phone was recently reported to have been listed on China’s 3C certification site. The foldable is expected to succeed the Honor Magic Vs, which was unveiled at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2023 in Barcelona, Spain earlier this year in February. Honor has now announced the launch date of the Honor Magic Vs 2. The company has also confirmed the release of the Honor Watch 4 Pro on the same day. The smart wearable is said to join the Honor Watch 4, which was introduced in China in July and may soon launch in India.

According to a Weibo post shared by Honor, the Honor Magic Vs 2 and the Honor Watch 4 Pro will launch in China on October 12. The firm has not yet revealed any more details about the products and about their global launch. We may learn more about them in the days leading up to the launch.

Meanwhile, in a recent Geekbench listing, an Honor handset with the model number VER-AN00, speculated to be the Magic Vs 2, was spotted with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC with 16GB of RAM. In an earlier 3C certification website listing, the phone was spotted with a similar model number of VCA-AN00. The phone is said to ship with Android 13.

The teaser image shared by Honor suggests that the Magic Vs 2 will sport a 50-megapixel primary rear camera. The phone may also pack a secondary 50-megapixel sensor with an ultra-wide lens and an 8-megapixel 3x telephoto camera like the Honor Magic Vs. The company claims that the Magic Vs 2 will be thinner and lighter than the preceding model.

In the meantime, the Honor Watch 4 Pro is said to offer a combination of “classics and technology” (translated from Chinese). This will join the Watch 4, which may launch in India soon.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra to Stick With Qualcomm Processor; S24 Plus and S24 Might Get Exynos Options

Several leaks revealed over the past couple of months that Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S24 Ultra will pack in several changes over the outgoing Galaxy S23 Ultra model. While it is expected to appear similar to its predecessor in terms of its cosmetic design, there are several changes expected under the hood, including its rear camera setup, which is said to do away with its 10X telephoto camera in favour of a 5X telephoto unit. Now, another leak corroborates a previous one in which the source claimed that Samsung will also be skipping on an Exynos-powered version of its Galaxy S24 Ultra this year.

The news comes from the Korean publication The Elec, which states that Samsung will, for the second time, avoid using its newest Exynos processor in its most high-end S series smartphone. The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is said to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, which will be manufactured using the 3nm fabrication process. When announced, it will be the second smartphone (after Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models) to be powered by a 3nm processor. While the source claims that the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra will only be available in a Qualcomm-powered model, the same does not apply to the other two models, which are expected to arrive alongside the Galaxy S24 Ultra. Both of the expected Samsung Galaxy S24+ and Galaxy S24 models are expected to be available in both Qualcomm and Exynos 2400 SoC-powered models, depending on region.

Last year’s Galaxy S23 series completely avoided any Exynos silicon because of issues related to performance and yield. The source goes on to state that South Korea, Samsung’s home market, will receive the Exynos-powered Galaxy S24+ and Galaxy S24 models. A previous report has also claimed that the Exynos-powered models will be reaching Europe as well. In the case of South Korea, at least, this has apparently been done for matters of pride and symbolism to reflect Samsung’s expertise in chip manufacturing. The recently showcased Exynos 2400 SoC has notable improvements over the older Exynos 2200 SoC with both general performance and AI performance as well.

Indeed, Samsung going with its silicon in its largely popular Galaxy S series should ideally bring about some platform-exclusive features. But over the years, apart from security, we have yet to see anything beneficial by utilising the same in smartphones.

The upcoming Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is said to offer a slightly different design this year. At the same time, all three models of the Galaxy S24 series are expected to have titanium frames. A rather odd move by Samsung as per recent leaks is the trimming down of its optical telephotos capabilities, bring it down from 10X zoom to 5X zoom; however, the sensor behind its zoom lens will be a lot more capable, so we could indeed expect a lighter or slimmer smartphone this year. The Galaxy S24 Ultra, unlike the outgoing model, is also said to feature a flatter display and may skip on the curved edges entirely this year like Google’s Pixel 8 Pro
