Dell XPS 13 9345, Dell Inspiron 14 7441 Plus With Snapdragon X Elite Chip Leak Ahead of Anticipated Debut

Dell XPS 13 9345 and Dell Inspiron 14 7441 Plus could be launched soon as the company’s first laptops to be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Series processors. Images of the next-generation laptops from Dell have now leaked online. They are said to feature a dedicated key to launch Microsoft’s Copilot chatbot along with support AI capabilities. Dell’s purported laptops are also tipped to arrive with support for Microsoft’s upcoming Windows AI Explorer and will reportedly be launched in the second half of 2024.

Images of two new laptops — the Dell XPS 13 9345 and Inspiron 14 7441 Plus — were published by Windows Report on Friday. These laptops are similar to the company’s previous XPS and Inspiron laptop lineups, and are equipped with a Snapdragon X Elite chip instead of AMD or Intel processors, according to the report.

The leaked images of the Dell XPS 13 9345 show the laptop from various angles, revealing an OLED display with slim bezels and a dedicated Copilot key. The laptop is also shown to feature a touch bar with escape, delete, and function keys, while the right and left sides of the keyboard extend to the edges of the chassis, just like the Dell XPS 13 Plus with a 12th Gen Intel Core Alder Lake CPU that was introduced at CES 2022.

Meanwhile, the Dell Inspiron 14 7441 Plus is shown with a design that will be similar to the company’s recent Inspiron series of laptops, along with rounded edges. It will also be equipped with a dedicated Copilot key, according to the leaked images, while the keyboard will also feature a fingerprint scanner that is built into the power button. The Inspiron 14 7441 Plus is also shown with a fairly large trackpad.

On the connectivity front, the Dell XPS 13 9345 is said to be equipped with two USB Type-C ports. Meanwhile, the Dell Inspiron 14 7441 Plus is shown to feature two USB Type-C ports, a USB Type-A port, and a microSD card slot. The leaked images show the XPS 13 9345 with a borderless trackpad, while the pictures of the Inspiron 14 7441 Plus suggest the laptop will have a Windows Hello compatible webcam alongside other unspecified sensors.

While Dell is yet to announce plans to launch new XPS and Inspiron laptops that are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite chips, the publication states that the XPS 9345 and Inspiron 14 7441 Plus could be launched in August or September. There’s also no word on pricing for both laptops, but we can expect these details, along with other product specifications to surface online in the coming months leading to their debut.

Oppo, OnePlus, and Realme Phones to Gain Phone Link, Link to Windows Support, But There’s a Catch

Oppo smartphones will soon work better with PCs and laptops running on Microsoft’s Windows 11 and Windows 10 operating systems, thanks to the addition of support for Phone Link and Link to Windows. At the recently concluded 2023 Oppo Developers Conference, both companies announced that support for the two apps was coming to Oppo, OnePlus, and Realme phones. However, it appears that compatible handsets will require a software update to the latest version of ColorOS (Oppo), OxygenOS (OnePlus), and Realme UI (Realme) in order to access the features.

Microsoft’s Phone Link app was previously exclusive to the company’s Surface devices, and phones from Samsung and Honor, but the company’s support page has now been updated (via WindowsLatest) to include four new entries — Oppo Find series, Oppo Reno series, OnePlus series, and Realme series. Similarly, Microsoft’s Link to Windows documentation has also been updated to include the same entries.

The support page does not list specific smartphone models, while several from Samsung and Honor are included under different sections. Several Samsung’s smartphones are also listed under a RCS messaging section, but phones from the three Chinese OEMs are not included in this list.

According to Microsoft’s support page, the Oppo Find series, Oppo Reno series, OnePlus series, and Realme series will support Phone Link, Link to Windows, Phone screen (remotely displaying your phone screen), and Apps (allowing you to mirror apps running on your smartphone). Samsung phone users can also sync their clipboard, quickly share files and view images from their camera roll, pick up phone calls, answer texts — without reaching for their phone.

However, just like Samsung phones, owners of Oppo, OnePlus, and Realme phones will have to wait for a software update that adds Phone Link support. As the features were announced alongside ColorOS 14, Oppo Find and Oppo Reno series owners are expected to get support for the feature when the update arrives, while OnePlus and Realme phones will have to wait for OxygenOS 14 and Realme UI 5.

Windows 11 Update Brings Native Support for RAR, 7-Zip, Other File Formats: Report

Microsoft Windows users know all too well about RAR and 7-Zip formats that allows users to store files in a compressed state to reduce their sizes. All Windows users have a third-party tool like WinRar installed on their system to access RAR files. That will no longer be necessary. Earlier this year, Microsoft had announced new features for Windows 11, including native RAR support. Now, the company is reportedly rolling out the feature as part of a Windows update.

Microsoft has issued an optional KB5031455 Preview Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 11 Version 22H2 for the month of October. According to a report from Beeping Computer, the update adds support for 11 new file archive formats, namely .rar, .7z, .tar, .tar.gz, .tar.bz2, .tar.zst, .tar.xz, .tgz, .tbz2, .tzst, and .txz.

With native support for archive file formats like RAR and 7-Zip, Windows users would no longer need a third-party app like WinRAR to access compressed files. To install the optional update, users can head to Windows 11 Settings, and click the ‘Windows Update’ button on the Home or System menu. If your system has not yet received the update, you should get a message that reads: ‘2023-10 Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 11 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5031455) is now available.’ Click Download & install to get the update, which adds support for archive file formats, including RAR. Once Windows is updated, users would be able to open, extract, and edit archive files without the need for any third-party tools.

The optional Windows 11 update can be checked in Settings menu

Back in May, Microsoft had first announced that Windows would be getting native RAR support, alongside a slew of new features. The company had said that Windows 11 would bring support for TAR (Tape Archive), 7-zip, RAR (Roshal Archive), GZ (Gzip), and other archive formats.

Microsoft had also said that Windows 11 would get support for accessing app instances in the taskbar with a click, hiding the date and time, and shutting down apps from the taskbar without the Windows Task Manager.

In September, the company updated Windows to support its new AI-powered Copilot assistant. Copilot adds a revamped Bing Chat to Windows 11, capable of generating summaries of web pages, toggling system controls, and provided text and image-based responses to your queries.

Last month, a transcript of a fireside chat at the Citi 2023 Global Technology Conference revealed that Microsoft could be gearing up to release Windows 12 next year. “We actually think ’24 is going to be a pretty good year for client, in particular, because of the Windows refresh,” the transcript quoted Intel CFO David Zinsner as saying, pointing at a 2024 release for Windows 12.

Windows 11 was released in 2021 and is now running on over 400 million monthly active devices. The popular operating system is expected to hit 500 million active devices by 2024.

Windows 12 Release Date Possibly Leaked by Intel: All You Need to Know

Windows 12 release date might have been leaked recently and could arrive on computers in the coming months. Microsoft’s purported successor to Windows 11 is expected to be the next major refresh after Windows 11 was released in October 2021 with visual changes elements like the taskbar, Windows Explorer, as well as support for widgets. It’s worth noting that Microsoft is yet to officially reveal any details of plans to launch the next version of its Windows desktop operating system.

A transcript of a recent fireside chat at the Citi 2023 Global Technology Conference reveals that Intel CFO David Zinsner might have leaked the release date for Windows 12. “We actually think ’24 is going to be a pretty good year for client, in particular, because of the Windows refresh,” the transcript quotes Zinsner as saying. Microsoft regularly issues updates and patches for its operating system, so a refresh of Windows suggests a new version is on the way.

“And we still think that the installed base is pretty old and does require a refresh and we think next year maybe the start of that, given the Windows catalyst. So, we’re optimistic about how things will play out beginning in ’24,” Zinsner adds, in response to a question about whether Intel expects its gains to continue after the company recently started to gain back market share.

It is interesting to note the timing of the Intel executive’s mention of the Windows “refresh” and “catalyst” come soon after the company unveiled its Intel Core Ultra processors that will arrive on December 14. Intel’s Meteor Lake chips, unlike their Raptor Lake predecessor, will be aimed at laptops. However, with the purported arrival of Intel’s Arrow Lake-S CPUs — with up to 24 cores — expected in 2024, Intel could have new desktop CPUs ready in time for the next version of Windows.

Intel’s new Meteor Lake chips are the first processors from the chipmaker to be equipped with a dedicated neural processing unit (NPU) for improved on-device AI performance. The new chiplet design also includes the first integrated NPU AI engine. Meanwhile, the Windows 11 23H2 update is already introducing new AI features such as Windows Copilot, and Microsoft is likely to double down on the AI features and technology it is working on, if it plans to release the next version of Windows in the coming months.

Windows 10 Free Upgrade Loophole for Windows 7 and Windows 8 Users Finally Closed by Microsoft

Windows 10 upgrades from older versions like Windows 7 and Windows 8 via a hidden loophole were recently shut down by Microsoft, which means that users running on the now obsolete versions of Windows will need to purchase a new license for Windows 10 if they want to upgrade to a supported operating system. Microsoft will provide updates to Windows 10 until 2025, while users running on older hardware might face compatibility issues when upgrading to the company’s latest desktop operating system.

Microsoft recently published a blog post (via Windows Central) that states that Microsoft’s official offer to upgrade to Windows 10 for free ended in July 2016. The company adds that the installation path to obtain the Windows 7 or Windows 8 free upgrade is also removed. As a result, users still running on older versions cannot use workarounds to update to Windows 10.

While Microsoft officially allowed users to upgrade to Windows 10 — at no additional cost — from Windows 7 or Windows 8 for free until July 29, 2016, users could use workarounds and other loopholes that remained accessible for years after the stipulated deadline to upgrade to Windows 10.

Since then, Microsoft has announced a new version of its desktop OS — Windows 11, the currently supported operating system model. Users who are running on Windows 10 will stop receiving important software updates in 2025, while Windows 7 and Windows 8 have already stopped receiving security updates and feature updates.

If you are already running on Windows 10, Microsoft says you can continue to upgrade to Windows 11 for free. However, upgrading to Windows 11 also requires a relatively new computer processor and other hardware requirements by Microsoft.

As a result, the only option for many users with older computers might be to purchase a standalone Windows 10 licence, which will allow them to receive updates until 2025, when Microsoft discontinues support for the operating system. Customers can also consider purchasing a new computer running on a preinstalled version of Windows 10 or Windows 11 out-of-the-box.

MS Paint Updated With Support for Layers, Editing Transparent Images: Details

MS Paint — also known as Microsoft Paint — is getting updated with two new image editing features that will allow users to edit images more effectively using Microsoft’s free graphics manipulation tool. Users will be able to edit images using layers, similar to Adobe’s widely used Photoshop software. MS Paint will also allow users to work with transparent images and save them once they are edited. the features are expected to roll out to all users running Windows 11 at a later date.

In a recent Windows Insider blog post, Microsoft announced that the company’s nearly 40-year-old computer program will be updated with support for layers. Users will be able to “add, remove, and manage layers on the canvas,” according to the company. These layers can be hidden at will, allowing users to work on them without affecting the content of other layers.

Just like other image manipulation tools like Photoshop and the open-source GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP), layers are also visible in the order they are placed in. Digital elements on each layer can then be organised or adjusted in such a way that they appear behind other elements in the image. Microsoft’s blog post provides an example of an image with pixel-style artwork depicting a cat with five layers including a yellow background.

Another important feature that has made its way to MS Paint is transparency support. Users will now be able to open and edit transparent images (like PNGs) on the application, which will show a duotone checkerboard pattern as the background for parts of the image that are transparent.

With the new transparency support MS Paint’s eraser tool can also remove the background selectively, making it transparent. When the image is ready to be saved, Paint will save it as a PNG file with the transparency — the application previously saved the image after filling the transparent areas with a white background.

There’s no word on when layers and transparency support will make its way to all users on Windows 11 — Microsoft is currently trialling the new functionality with Windows Insider testers on the Canary and Dev channels on version 11.2308.18.0 or newer. The company is expected to roll out the features to all users once testing is concluded.

Windows 10 Feature Updates Discontinued by Microsoft Ahead of End of Support in 2025

Windows 10 feature updates have been discontinued by Microsoft, two years before the firm ends support for the eight-year-old operating system. The tech giant made the announcement via its Windows 10 product page on Thursday. Microsoft is set to end all software support for Windows 10 in October 2025. Until then, users will continue to receive security updates. The Windows 10 22H2 version is the last feature update of the operating system. The tech giant launched the Windows 11 in October 2021 and has since been encouraging users to upgrade to Windows 11.

According to the details shared on the Windows 10 product page on Microsoft’s website, the operating system will not get any further feature updates. This means the 2H22 version is the last OS update for users on Windows 10. Users will, however, continue to receive security updates until Microsoft ends support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Users have also been advised to move to Windows 11 soon or update Windows 10 to its latest 22H2 version in order to continue receiving security updates and stay safe from malware and spyware.

Additionally, the company also announced it will release the next Windows long-term servicing channel (LTSC) release in the second half of 2024. The LTSC version of Windows 10 will continue to receive updates after the October 2025 deadline for regular Windows 10 installations.

Windows 10 was released by Microsoft in 2015. The company first announced it would end support for the OS in June 2021, before it introduced Windows 11, which arrived in October 2021 with a massive redesign including an all-new boot screen, startup sound, centrally-located Start menu, and upgraded widgets. It also has an improved touch keyboard that includes GIFs integration in partnership with Tenor.

Earlier this year, Microsoft announced it wouuld discontinue the sale of its Windows 10 Home and Pro downloads from January 31. It has stopped the sale of Windows 10 downloads and its license keys. However, it wasn’t clear whether Windows 10 downloads and license keys will continue to remain accessible via third-party retailers like Amazon.

Microsoft to Introduce Some Windows 11 Features in Windows 10: Report

Microsoft is reportedly bringing the printing capabilities from Windows 11 to Windows 10. The new printing feature is said to introduce the option to add a PIN to a print job. This step is said to be added to avoid duplicate connections and incorrect printouts. The update is said to be part of the Windows 10 version 22H2 update. It was reported last month that Microsoft is switching to a new development schedule for Windows. Windows 11 was also reportedly said to be getting a feature called ‘Privacy Auditing’ that will help users look at the apps accessing their microphone, camera, and location data.

According to a recent report by Windows Latest, Microsoft is bringing the printing capabilities of Windows 11 to Windows 10, as a part of its Windows 10 version 22H2 update. This is said to include features that were exclusive to Windows 11, including the option to add a PIN to a print job. This feature is expected to help to avoid duplicate connections as well as incorrect printouts.

As mentioned earlier, Microsoft was reportedly switching to a new development schedule for Windows operating system. It is expected that the company is going back to its traditional three-year cycle, which could mean that the next major version might get released in 2024. This version could be Windows 12 if the company chooses to stick with its current naming trend, as per the report. Microsoft is also expected to double down on releasing new features for the current version of Windows.

To recall, Windows 11 was also reportedly said to be getting a feature called ‘Privacy Auditing’ that will help users look at apps accessing their microphone, camera, and location data. Microsoft had initially introduced the feature to app developers for testing. However, it will be available to Windows 11 users in the future to let them decide whether they should continue to use the apps that are tracking their sensitive data on the system.
