Daredevil: Born Again Gets Major Creative Reboot With Original Writers Being Let Go

Daredevil: Born Again is reportedly undergoing a massive creative overhaul. As per The Hollywood Reporter, during the writers’ strike production break in mid-June, Marvel executives, including President Kevin Feige, reviewed shot footage from the soft reboot and came to the conclusion that the ‘show wasn’t working’. Its effects were seen in September when the studio quietly let go of head writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman, alongside directors for the respective 18 episodes. Turns out, the duo took a new direction with Daredevil, switching from its violent Netflix origins to a legal courtroom procedural, where returning lead Charlie Cox didn’t even show up in costume until episode 4.

It is worth mentioning that merely half of the first season was shot prior to the Hollywood labour strikes, but it seems to have been enough for Feige to call off production. The team is currently looking for new writers and directors for Daredevil: Born Again, which would also reunite Cox with Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle/ The Punisher and Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk/ Kingpin. The THR report notes that Marvel, as a whole, is looking to reset their TV series development process by having creators deliver a pilot for approval, instead of spending over $150 million (about Rs. 1,247 crore) on seasons, right away. “We’re trying to marry the Marvel culture with the traditional television culture,” Brad Winderbaum, Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation at Marvel Studios said in the interview. “It comes down to, ‘How can we tell stories in television that honour what’s so great about the source material?’”

While Marvel shows had a great start, with the Emmy-nominated WandaVision and Loki, the franchise struggled to keep audiences invested with its new lineup of superheroes and hollow stories, thereby affecting metrics. It appears now that instead of having showrunners run the TV series, the studio got executive producers to do the job, in addition to fixing any issues during post-production and via reshoots. For what it’s worth, Daredevil: Born Again will still keep some of the recorded scenes, albeit it’s expected to have a ton of changes. Meanwhile, original writers Ord and Corman will stay on as executive producers on the two-season series.

For now, it’s unclear whether the Disney+ reboot will follow the eponymous 1986 comic book run — written by Frank Miller — in which Matt Murdock’s former secretary Karen Page, who’d turned into a heroin addict strapped for cash, sold out Daredevil’s identity. Upon learning this information, the Kingpin uses his influence to meddle with Murdock’s life personal life — closing his bank accounts and such — and driving him to the brink of insanity. There is no official synopsis for the show yet and neither Deborah Ann Woll nor Elden Henson is confirmed to be part of it. They played Page and lawyer Franklin “Foggy” Nelson in the original Netflix series.

Daredevil: Born Again currently does not have a release window, but when it does, it should be out on Disney+ and Disney+ Hotstar.

NASA Unveils Newly Returned Carbon-Rich Asteroid Sample

NASA on Wednesday gave the public a first glimpse of what scientists found inside a sealed capsule that was returned to Earth last month carrying a carbon-rich soil sample scooped from an asteroid‘s surface, including water-bearing clay minerals.

A small quantity of the material collected by the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft three years ago from the near-Earth asteroid Bennu was unveiled in an auditorium at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, a little more than two weeks after it was parachuted into the Utah desert.

The return capsule’s landing capped a seven-year joint mission of the US space agency and the University of Arizona. It was only the third asteroid sample, and by far the biggest, returned to Earth for analysis, following two similar missions by Japan’s space agency ending in 2010 and 2020.

“It’s days like this that continue to amaze me,” NASA chief Bill Nelson said from the stage as he introduced the first picture of material retrieved from Bennu, a celestial artifact about 4.5 billions years old, on a viewing screen.

The image showed a loose cluster of small charcoal-colored rocks, pebbles and dust found to have been left in the outer portion of the sample-collection assembly when the asteroid’s soil was sucked through a filter into the spacecraft’s storage canister.

Technicians are still methodically disassembling hardware surrounding the inner science canister containing the bulk of the specimen, a process expected to take two more weeks.

But the “bonus” sample of overflow material was immediately examined with electron microscopes and X-ray instruments, said Dante Lauretta, principal mission investigator at the University of Arizona.

What they found was material high in carbon, nearly 5% by weight of an element essential to all life on Earth, as well as water molecules locked in the crystallized structure of clay fibers, Lauretta said.

Scientists also discovered iron minerals in the form of iron sulfides and iron oxides, “which themselves are indicative of formation in a water-rich environment,” Lauretta told a later news briefing.

Daniel Glavin, a senior sample scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, said early analysis found the material seems to be “loaded with organics.”

The preliminary findings point to a likelihood of further discoveries that could buttress the hypothesis that early Earth was seeded with the primordial ingredients for life by celestial objects such as comets, asteroids and meteorites that bombarded the young planet.

Ancient rubble pile

Bennu, discovered in 1999, is described by scientists as a relatively loose clump of rocky material, like a rubble pile, held together by gravity. It measures about three-tenths of a mile (500 meters) across, making it slightly wider than the Empire State Building is tall but tiny compared with the Chicxulub asteroid that struck Earth some 66 million years ago, wiping out the dinosaurs.

Like other asteroids, Bennu is a relic of the early solar system. Because its present-day chemistry and mineralogy are virtually unchanged since its formation, it holds clues to the origins and development of rocky planets such as Earth, and could prove central to studies of astrobiology.

The capsule was initially inspected at the Utah Test and Training range near the landing site, then flown to Houston for closer examination in a specially built “clean room” inside a Johnson Space Center astromaterials curation facility.

In the months ahead, the overall asteroid sample is to be parceled out into smaller specimens promised to some 200 scientists in 60 laboratories around the world.

At the time it landed, the Bennu sample was estimated to weigh about 250 grams (8.8 ounces), well above the minimum amount of 60 grams (2 ounces) scientists had hoped to collect. A more precise measurement will come in a few weeks, once the canister has been fully opened and all the contents weighed.

OSIRIS-REx launched in 2016 and reached Bennu in 2018, then spent nearly two years orbiting it before venturing close enough to snatch a sample of the loose surface material with its robotic arm on October 20, 2020.

Lauretta said preliminary analysis of the first bits of the sample showed that orbital observations of the asteroid had “predicted the mineralogy very accurately.”

NASA is due to launch a separate mission on Thursday to a more distant asteroid called Psyche, a metal-rich body believed to be the remnant core of a protoplanet and the largest known metallic object in the solar system.

Use of ChatGPT, Other AI Tools Paused by US Space Force Over Data Concerns

The US Space Force has paused the use of web-based generative artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT for its workforce over data security concerns, according to a memo seen by Reuters.

A memo dated September 29 and addressed to Guardians, the name Space Force calls its workforce, prohibits personnel from using such AI tools including large-language models on government computers until they receive formal approval by the force’s Chief Technology and Innovation Office.

It said the temporary ban was “due to data aggregation risks.”

Uses of generative AI, powered by large language models that ingest huge troves of past data to learn, have exploded in the past year, underpinning ever-evolving products such as OpenAI‘s ChatGPT that can swiftly generate content like text, images or video off of a simple prompt.

Lisa Costa, Space Force’s chief technology and innovation officer, said in the memo that the technology “will undoubtedly revolutionize our workforce and enhance Guardian’s ability to operate at speed.”

An Air Force spokesperson confirmed the temporary ban, which was first reported by Bloomberg.

“A strategic pause on the use of Generative AI and Large Language Models within the US Space Force has been implemented as we determine the best path forward to integrate these capabilities into Guardians’ roles and the USSF mission,” Air Force spokesperson Tanya Downsworth said in a statement.

“This is a temporary measure to protect the data of our service and Guardians,” she added.

Costa said in the memo that her office had formed a generative AI task force with other Pentagon offices to mull ways to use the technology in a “responsible and strategic manner.”

More guidance on Space Force’s use of generative AI would be released in the next month, she added.

HTech to Launch New Handset in India by Year End, Foldable Phone Coming in Early 2024: CEO Madhav Sheth

Honor, a former subsidiary of Huawei, marked its return to the Indian market in September with the launch of Honor 90 5G via Madhav Sheth’s HTech. Now, HTech is looking to expand its product portfolio in India. In a recent media interview, the company’s CEO Madhav Sheth revealed Honor’s intentions to launch a foldable phone in the first half of next year. He also reportedly stated that the next Honor smartphone launch will likely launch by the end of this year.

In an interview with Financial Express, Madhav Sheth revealed that HTech’s next smartphone launch will take place probably before the end of this year. He also confirmed that the company is expecting to bring at least one foldable handset to India by the first half of 2024. Further, Sheth said that HTech aims to start local manufacturing internally by early next year and move a majority of the company’s portfolio to India manufacturing. He added that HTech is in talks with three partners and contracts will be signed soon.

Honor’s book-style foldable smartphones like Honor Magic Vs and Honor Magic V2 have mostly been limited to China. The launch of Honor’s foldable handset will give fresh competition to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 5, Oppo Find N3 Flip, Google Pixel Fold, and Tecno Phantom V Flip among others in India.

The launch of Honor 90 last month marked the re-entry of Honor into the smartphone segment in India after a hiatus of three years. Honor withdrew its operations from India in 2020.

Price of Honor 90 5G in India starts at Rs. 37,999 for the 8GB RAM + 256GB storage variant, while the 12GB RAM + 512GB storage model costs Rs. 39,999. It is offered in Diamond Silver, Emerald Green, and Midnight Black colours.

The Honor 90 5G features a 6.7-inch full-HD+ (1,200 x 2,664 pixels) AMOLED display with a refresh rate of 120Hz. It runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC Accelerated Edition paired with up to 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 256GB of UFS 3.1 inbuilt storage. It has a triple rear camera unit, comprising a 200-megapixel primary sensor, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide and macro camera, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. For selfies and video calls, it has a 50-megapixel sensor. It packs a 5,000mAh battery with support for 66W wired fast charging.

Amazon, Flipkart Festival Season Spurs Online Shopping Spree in India

Run off their virtual feet at the start of India’s festival season, e-commerce companies like Amazon and Walmart owned Flipkart are looking forward to a potentially record breaking few weeks.

Any lingering fears that inflation and higher interest rates would dampen consumers’ spirit in Asia’s third largest economy, are being rapidly dispelled.

RedSeer, a Bangalore-based consultancy, which monitors over 100 platforms covering 90 percent of online sales, predicts virtual shoppers will spend a record $11 billion (nearly Rs. 91,550 crore) during the month to mid-November — which would be nearly 20 percent more than last year.

Amazon India has made its “best-ever start” to the peak period in the shopping calendar, according to country manager Manish Tiwary, reporting a record 95 million customer visits in the first two days of its Great Indian Festival 2023 campaign.

Over at Flipkart, sales of electronic products, lifestyle garments and furniture were seven to ten times higher than in the pre-festival period, said vice president Arief Mohamad.

Both retailers have hired over 2,00,000 temporary workers to meet the rush and added over 3,00,000 new sellers, according to company officials.

“I don’t have time even for lunch as there are so many packets to be delivered,” said Ajay Singh, a delivery boy at a Flipkart delivery centre in a busy market in New Delhi.

Singh says he’s working more than 12 hours a day and expects to double his earnings over the next few weeks.

Changing Ways

Citing a report by market research Nielsen Media India, Amazon officials said over 80 percent of urban consumers were expected to shop online during this festival season, and half of buyers were willing to spend more compared to last year.

A shift in consumer behaviour and increased penetration of smartphones has fuelled the rise in online buying.

Manju Negi could be speaking for a lot of working women in India with money to spend but little time to spare, and no great desire to travel on jammed roads to and from bustling malls and markets.

“Who would like to go to an overcrowded market and spend hours buying products while paying for transport, when there are so many options on online platforms,” said Negi, a public relations manager with a company in Delhi. “We plan to spend more on festival buying compared to last year.”

Negi has already bought a washing machine and an air-fryer online and said she is now looking for home décor items ahead of India’s largest festival of Diwali in November.

Delivery networks

The e-commerce firms have also expanded their footprint by organising delivery solutions for more customers living outside India’s major metros.

“The fast emerging online business has created opportunities for a number of logistics companies and small sellers – generating jobs for millions,” said Ashwani Jakhar, CEO of Prozo, a supply-chain management company based in Gurgaon, near Delhi.

Commenting on the first 48 hours of the festival sales, Amazon said in a statement that more than 80 percent of customers came from non-metro cities, and smaller sellers saw a 35 percent jump in sales compared a year ago.

A report by India’s central bank last week showed consumer confidence touched a four-year high in September on the back of stabilising inflation and improving employment conditions.

As consumer spending accounts for 60 percent of gross domestic product, that would support the Reserve Bank of India’s forecast for economic growth of 6.5 percent in the year to March 31, 2024.

Mrigank Gutgutia, partner at RedSeer, expected the improvement in business and consumer sentiment to last, resulting in “better and stable growth for e-commerce not only this festival season but in the next few years as well.”

The e-commerce market is projected to expand to $350 billion (nearly Rs. 29,13, 060 crore) by 2030 from an estimated $63 billion (nearly Rs. 5,24,350 crore) in 2023, according to government estimates.

PS5 Cloud Streaming Arrives This Month for PS Plus Premium Members: 4K Streaming, Save Syncing, More

Sony is launching cloud streaming for the PS5 console, later this month. The feature will be available to PS Plus Premium — highest-tier — members only, letting them stream select Game Catalog titles like Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Horizon Forbidden West, Ghost of Tsushima, and more, without having to download or actually own them. Unfortunately, it’s getting a staggered rollout, first launching in Japan, Europe, and North American regions, promising ‘hundreds’ of PS5 games in the future. The company confirmed the addition and testing of cloud streaming in June, as part of its pivot towards the technology, further solidified by its PlayStation Portal handheld device.

PS5 cloud streaming is slated to launch October 17 in Japan, followed by Europe on October 23 and North America on October 30. Furthermore, players can stream any titles they own digitally — no download needed — such as the new God of War Ragnarök, Resident Evil 4, and Dead Island 2, to name just a few, including any additional DLCs. As for quality, it appears the report from August was right, with Playstation offering four high-quality resolutions to choose from — 720p, 1080p, 1440p, and 4K, all with 60fps and SDR or HDR output. While players can certainly choose their preferred resolution, the results will ultimately depend on the type of internet connection they have. Sony recommends at least 15mbps for 1080p streaming and above 38mbps for 4K.

Technically, cloud streaming was made available when the refreshed PS Plus was launched last year, though it was limited to PS4, and the Classics Catalog containing PS2 and PS3 games. In addition to capturing screenshots, one can record up to three-minute-long clips of their gameplay, which will be downloaded locally onto PS5’s Media Gallery — also accessible via the PlayStation phone app. It’s also worth noting Sony’s choice of words, which states that the features from above will be available ‘exclusively’ on the PS5, ‘at launch’ — suggesting we might be able to stream games to other devices in the future. All of this will be packaged with the existing benefits of a PS Plus Premium subscription, which includes Game Trials (timed demos) for new titles, an assortment of free games every month, exclusive discounts, and access to online multiplayer and cloud storage.

In August, Sony raised the prices for its 12-month-long PS Plus plans, despite not providing a good enough justification for the membership, thanks to a lacklustre set of free games recently. The hike caused a bunch of fans to express their dismay by cancelling their subscriptions, so hopefully, the addition of PS5 cloud streaming works well in PlayStation’s favour. In fact, Sony claims the feature is already out in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Cyprus, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK, and the US. As stated before, India is nowhere on that list and in Sony’s upcoming staggered rollout plan.

PlayStation Plus Deluxe subscription starts in India from Rs. 849 per month.

Crypto Price Today: Bitcoin, Ether Continue to Trade in Losses, Chainlink and Monero See Minor Gains

The overall crypto price chart is trading in red, indicating losses for most cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin on Thursday, October 12 incurred a loss of 1.01 percent bringing its trading price to $26,820 (roughly Rs. 22.2 lakh). In the last 24 hours, the value of BTC has dropped by $240 (roughly Rs. 19,950). Industry experts have also acknowledged that there indeed is, a downtrend in the prices of major crypto assets this week including Bitcoin and majority other cryptocurrencies.

“Traders are now eyeing the next crucial support level for Bitcoin, which is expected to materialise around the $25,000 (roughly Rs. 20.7 lakh) mark. When we examine the moving averages for Bitcoin, they consistently suggest a ‘Sell’ sentiment, further underscoring the prevailing bearish outlook,” Rajagopal Menon, Vice President, WazirX told Gadgets 360, commenting on BTC’s status.

Ether value dipped by 0.13 percent on Thursday. The cryptocurrency is currently trading at the price of $1,560 (roughly Rs. 1.29 lakh).

“Both BTC and ETH have experienced a consistent four-day decline, indicating a bearish trend in the market. From a technical perspective, it’s notable that both crypto’s are currently trading below the critical 50 and 200 EMA (exponential moving average) daily,” the CoinDCX research team told Gadgets360.

Tether, Binance Coin, Ripple, USD Coin, Solana, Cardano, and Dogecoin also recorded losses alongside BTC and ETH for the second consecutive day.

Polygon, Polkadot, Litecoin, Shiba Inu, and Bitcoin Cash also continue to trade in the reds for the second day.

The overall crypto market valuation fell by 0.66 percent in the last 24 hours. The market cap, however, remains grounded to the mark of $1.05 trillion (roughly Rs. 87,31,296 crore), unchanged from the previous day, showed CoinMarketCap.

Meanwhile, Tron, Chainlink, Monero, Cosmos, Cronos, and Bitcoin SV saw small gains.

Despite the ongoing market upheaval, industry experts advise cautious trading decisions. Developments in the sector are still happening despite the tumultuous market conditions, keeping industry experts optimistic about a stable future for the sector. JPMorgan’s in-house blockchain Onyx has launched its tokenized collateral network. It recently carried out its first live blockchain-based collateral settlement transaction involving Barclays and Blackrock.

“In addition, investors across financial markets, including crypto, are looking forward to the US CPI data, which is expected to be out today. As US stock indices have traded bullish one day before the data, investors are hoping to see a positive sign. Any sign of larger-than-expected inflation data is likely to put pressure across markets, taking crypto alongside,” Shubham Hudda, Senior Manager, CoinSwitch Markets Desk told Gadgets360.
