Xiaomi HyperOS Will See a Release in India on February 29

Xiaomi announced that the HyperOS interface will arrive in India last month. Now the company has revealed a launch date. Ahead of the much-awaited introduction of the Xiaomi 14 model in the country, the company’s new HyperOS skin will be unveiled. Recently, the company confirmed a list of devices that will get the HyperOS update in H1 2024. Xiaomi had also previously confirmed the models that would first receive the stable version of the update in India. However, Xiaomi 14 will still be the first phone from the company in the country to ship with this user interface.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Xiaomi India announced that the company’s new HyperOS will be unveiled in the country on February 29 at 12pm. This is a few days ahead of the Xiaomi 14 India launch, and it runs HyperOS out-of-the-box.

Notably, the company has previously confirmed that the Xiaomi 13 Pro and Xiaomi Pad 6 will be the first in India to receive the HyperOS update. Both phones ship with Android 13-based MIUI skin.

Recently, Xiaomi revealed that the Xiaomi 13, Xiaomi 13T, Xiaomi 12 as well as the Xiaomi 12T series will get a stable update of HyperOS by June this year. Even Redmi Note 13 5G and the Redmi Note 12 5G lineup are confirmed to get this update by H1 2024.

Meanwhile, the HyperOS-running Xiaomi 14 will launch in India on March 7. Like its global and Chinese counterparts, the phone will be powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC paired with 12GB of RAM. It is backed by a 4,610mAh battery with support for 90W wired and 50W wireless fast charging.

The Indian variant of the Xiaomi 14 is expected to feature a 6.36-inch LTPO AMOLED display, a 50-megapixel triple rear camera unit, and a 32-megapixel front camera. It is confirmed to be sold in the country via Amazon and it will come in black, green, and white colour options.

Xiaomi to Launch MiOS as Replacement for 13-Year-Old MIUI Android Skin, Tipster Claims

Xiaomi is tipped to replace its MIUI Android skin with a new interface. Thirteen years after the Chinese smartphone maker launched the first version of MIUI for its smartphones, a tipster has claimed that the company will announce a successor called MiOS. The latest version of the skin available for eligible smartphones is MIUI 14. It is currently unclear whether MiOS will be a new Android-based operating system like Huawei’s HarmonyOS, or whether it will be an Android skin like MIUI, OxygenOS, ColorOS and Funtouch OS.

Tipster Digital Chat Station (translated from Chinese) claims in a Weibo post that Xiaomi has decided that MIUI 14 will be the “last official major version” of MIUI. The tipster goes on to state that the only shortcoming of the smartphone maker’s popular Android skin were the animation effects. Xiaomi first introduced MIUI in August 2010 and the company has released 14 major versions of the operating system so far.

The Chinese smartphone maker has not announced any plans for a new operating system so far, but back in August, tipster Ice Universe (X: @UniverseIce) posted a screenshot stating that the “mios.cn” domain and MiOS trademark was issued to Xiaomi. At the time, Ice Universe has speculated that Xiaomi’s “highly customized self-developed operating system” could be on the way.

However, it is currently unclear whether Xiaomi plans to launch its own “standalone” operating system based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) — just like Huawei did with the release of HarmonyOS — or whether the purported MiOS will be released as a software layer on top of Google’s Android that is offered to manufacturers along with Google’s services.

Even if MiOS is a redesigned version of Xiaomi’s Android skin for its smartphones, the refreshed branding could help the company shed the perception that its MIUI skin features advertisements — Xiaomi’s skin has not displayed advertisements or promotions for several years, but some customers still associate the software with ads.

Xiaomi released MIUI 14 in December last year and the company also supports previously launched devices that are running on the older MIUI 13 version but still receiving security updates. MIUI 14 dropped support for smartphones running on Android 11, while introducing small refinements to the interface and a Photon Engine that was claimed to offer improved performance compared to previous versions of MIUI.

Xiaomi 12 has begun receiving an update to MIUI 14 based on Android 13, according to a report. The company’s latest update to its software interface, MIUI 14, was unveiled at a virtual event last month where the company also launched the flagship Xiaomi 13 series. At the time, the Chinese tech giant announced its roadmap for the rollout of MIUI 14 to eligible devices. However, this timeline was limited to China-specific Xiaomi smartphones, and there was no word from the company regarding a global rollout. The update rolling out to Xiaomi 12 phones in global markets also reportedly includes the latest monthly security updates.

MIUI 14 Early Access Program Announced Ahead of December 1 Release Date

MIUI 14, Xiaomi’s Android 13-based software interface for its smartphones, will be launched on December 1. The company’s upcoming software update will make its debut alongside the Xiaomi 13 series on December 1. A couple of days ahead of the launch of Xiaomi’s upcoming smartphones, the Chinese OEM has introduced an early access program for MIUI 14 in China, which will allow users to try the latest software before it is officially rolled out. Notably, the program is currently limited to users in China, but could be extended to other regions in the future.

According to a report by ITHome, Xiaomi is allowing users to sign up for early access to MIUI 14 in China. The MIUI 14 testing program began on November 28, and will end on December 28 at 11:59pm, as per the report. Users will be required to sign up with the Chinese smartphone maker to try out the upcoming software update.

A user can register only one Xiaomi device — a tablet or a smartphone — for the MIUI 14 early access program, as per the report. Once a device is enrolled, users will not be able to enroll another Xiaomi device with the same account.

The report says that early access will be rolled out in a phased manner. However, at the moment, only users in China will have access to the program, while users in other regions will have to wait for the company to expand testing to other countries.

Xiaomi’s upcoming MIUI 14 software update is expected to be based on Android 13, while older Xiaomi phones could get the MIUI 14 update based on Android 12. While the company is yet to announce any details regarding features on MIUI 14, the update is expected to introduce core Android 13 features including improved privacy settings, better theming support, and an improved media player notification.

Meanwhile, Xiaomi 13 is confirmed to launch on December 1. The upcoming lineup will comprise two models: the vanilla Xiaomi 13 and Xiaomi 13 Pro. The upcoming flagship lineup will be powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. The Xiaomi 13 lineup is expected to run on Android 13-based MIUI 14 when it is launched on December 1.
