It is said to succeed the Samsung Galaxy A54 5G, which debuted in March this year with a 50-megapixel triple rear camera setup, a 6.4-inch full-HD+ Super AMOLED display, and a 5,000mAh battery. The Galaxy A55 is tipped to arrive with upgrades over the preceding model. The phone was previously reported to have begun internal testing. The preceding Galaxy A54 5G comes with a 6.4-inch full-HD+ Super AMOLED display with a refresh rate of 120Hz and runs Android 13 with One UI 5.1 on top. It is powered by an unnamed octa-core chipset and backed by a 5,000mAh battery. The phone also has Dolby-powered stereo speakers and an IP67 rating for dust and splash resistance.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Tipped to Get Instagram Camera Shortcut on Lock Screen

Samsung Galaxy S24 series is speculated to launch globally soon. The lineup is likely to include the base Galaxy S24, a Galaxy S24 Plus and a Galaxy S24 Ultra model. The phones are said to succeed the Galaxy S23 models, which were unveiled earlier this year in February. While the South Korean company has not yet officially confirmed the launch date, its next generation of flagship Galaxy S series has been tipped to be launched on January 17 at an Unpacked event in the US. Several reports and certification site listings have suggested many key details about the Galaxy S24 handsets. Design renders of the phones have also been leaked. Now, a report suggests a new lock screen widget for the popular photo sharing app Instagram may arrive with the purported smartphones.

A user on X, Alessandro Paluzzi (@alex193a), shared a screenshot that suggested that the Galaxy S24 will allow an Instagram camera shortcut on its lock screen. Once a Galaxy S24 user opens the Instagram application for the first time, a pop-up dialogue box will offer them the choice to turn on Instagram Camera shortcut on their handsets, according to the image.

Notably, the shortcut is not for the Instagram application in general, but specifically only the Instagram Camera. If true, it will be one of the few non-system apps to have a lock screen widget on Android smartphones. It is speculated that the Galaxy S24 phones will get this update with the One UI 6.1 OS version, which is expected to release alongside the upcoming flagship smartphones.

Leaked images of Galaxy S24 dummy units have previously given us an idea of what the phones may look like. The handsets appear with minor adjustments over the preceding Galaxy S23 models. The external metal frames of the Galaxy S24, the Galaxy S24+ and the Galaxy S24 Ultra smartphones are seen with rounded edges instead of sharp ones. The sides of the phones also appear flat.

A recent Geekbench listing suggested that the Galaxy S24 Ultra with the model number SM-S928N may launch with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC paired with 12GB of RAM. The Korean version of the base Galaxy S24 model, on the other hand, is likely to come with an in-house Exynos 2400 SoC paired with 8GB of RAM. The Galaxy S24 models are said to ship with Android 14-based One UI 6.0 skin.

Google Paid Billions to Make Play Store and Assistant Default Apps on Samsung Phones, Google Executive Says

Google paid Samsung billions of dollars in order to make the search giant’s app store, assistant, search engine, and other services the default options on smartphones made by the latter, according to information that has emerged during the ongoing Google vs Epic Games trial. On Monday, Google Vice President for Partnerships James Kolotouros revealed that the company signed deals with various smartphone manufacturers, including the South Korean tech conglomerate, to have the Google Play store installed out-of-the-box on Android phones.

Bloomberg reports that Kolotouros’ testimony during the ongoing Google vs Epic Games trial revealed that around half of Google’s Play Store revenue comes from customers who own Samsung devices. The executive also said that the company planned to create a system to split revenue from the Play Store with smartphone makers in exchange for having the firm’s apps preinstalled on their smartphones.

Under Google’s ‘Project Banyan’ initiative that began in 2019, the company planned to spend $200 million on a deal that would have Samsung distribute its Galaxy Store app via the Play Store, according to the report. While that deal did not work out, the company agreed to pay Samsung $8 billion (roughly Rs. 66,500 crore) over a period of four years to have the Play Store exist on Samsung phones alongside the smartphone maker’s app store.

On Tuesday, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai also testified that the search giant pays Apple 36 percent of Safari search revenue in exchange for its service being the default on the company’s smartphones. Epic’s attorney reportedly asked Pichai if the amount paid by Google to Apple was higher than what it paid Samsung, and the CEO stated that it was possible but added that it was like comparing apples and oranges.

The ongoing Google vs Epic trial has seen the latter produce several pieces of evidence as it tries to build a case against the search giant’s app store. Epic alleges that Google made the deals to protect its Play Store operating profit that — estimated by the game publisher to be over $12 billion (roughly Rs. 99,700 crore) in 2021 — by preventing the spread of alternative, or third-party app stores.

Samsung Denies Rumours of Affordable Foldable Smartphones: Report

Samsung’s 2024 lineup was recently speculated to include budget foldable smartphones. The first affordable foldable from the South Korean tech giant was said to cost around $400 to $500 (roughly Rs. 33,000 to Rs. 41,000), similar to a mid-range Galaxy A series smartphone. The company has now reportedly denied rumours of a mid-range Samsung foldable phone. Samsung was said to release Fan Edition versions of the foldable phone after the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 next year.

As per a report by Korea JoongAng Daily, a Samsung spokesperson confirmed that the company doesn’t have plans for a “mid-range” foldable. “We don’t plan to manufacture foldable smartphones that are priced in the midrange, and the latest rumours are groundless,” the report quotes the spokesperson as saying.

Samsung was also rumoured to launch a cheaper Galaxy Z foldable phone called the Galaxy Z FE (Fan Edition) after the launch of Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 and the spokesperson rejected the rumour saying, “there’s nothing decided on the matter”.

Recent rumours said that Samsung was developing a lower-cost foldable set to arrive in 2024. A report by market research firm TrendForce claimed that Samsung will introduce more competitively priced foldable phones to the mid-range market next year to help reduce price barriers and make foldable phones more accessible. Further, a tipster opined that the foldable could be priced as low as $400 to $500.

The South Korean brand has released five iterations of the Galaxy Z foldable flagships. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 were launched just a few months ago. The price of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 starts at $999(roughly Rs. 82,000), while the Galaxy Z Fold 5 has an initial price tag of $1,799 (roughly Rs. 1,47,000).

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 price in India starts at Rs. 1,54,999 for the base 12GB RAM + 256GB storage configuration and Galaxy Z Flip 5 starts at Rs. 99,999 for the 8GB RAM + 256GB storage model.

Both the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 are powered by Qualcomm’s custom Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy and feature a new Flex Hinge. They ship with One UI 5.1.1 based on Android 13 and have an IPX8 rated build for water resistance.

Samsung Galaxy A25 Reportedly Listing on FCC Site; Suggests Charging, Connectivity Details

Samsung Galaxy A25 may arrive in the market sooner than expected. The phone is said to succeed the Galaxy A24, which was released earlier this year in April. Following Samsung’s usual product launch cycle, it could be argued that the Galaxy A25 may see an April 2024 release. However, the phone has been reportedly spotted on the FCC website, suggesting that it may see an earlier-than-expected launch. The listing, also reportedly hints at some key charging and connectivity details of the purported handset.

According to an FCC listing cited in a MySmartPrice report, the Galaxy A25 will support 25W wired fast charging, much like the preceding Galaxy A24 model. The listing also seems to hint that the smartphone will support NFC and ten 5G bands – n2/5/25/29/30/41/48/66/70/71/77.

Previous leaks have suggested that the Galaxy A25 is likely to be powered by an in house Exynos 1280 SoC paired with 8GB of RAM. The phone is said to ship with Android 14-based One UI 6. It could come with a 6.44-inch AMOLED display and a triple rear camera unit led by a 50-megapixel primary sensor. The front camera may be equipped with a 13-megapixel sensor. It has been tipped to pack a 5,000mAh battery and is expected to measure 162mm x 77.5mm x 8.3mm in size.

Leaked design renders of the Galaxy A25 suggest that the phone will launch in black, blue-grey, lime green, and light blue colour options. The phone is seen with narrow bezels and sports what Samsung reportedly calls an Infinity-V notch display, with a centre-aligned waterdrop notch at the top of the front panel to hold the front camera.

The power button has also been tipped to double as a fingerprint sensor. This is placed alongside the volume rockers on the right edge of the handset. The triple rear camera unit of the Galaxy A25 is seen vertically arranged in the top left corner of the back panel with an LED flash unit placed beside it.

India Smartphone Sector Stagnant in Q3 2023, Realme Overtakes Vivo in Market Share: IDC

A recent research states that sluggish performance in the quarter caused India’s smartphone market to remain flat year over year in Q3 2023 with shipments of 44 million units. Its forecast for the market in 2023 suggests that shipments will remain steady or decline slightly. The research adds that the first two months of the third quarter, July and August, saw single-digit growth as the channels began early seasonal stocking. However, September saw the lowest shipments since 2019 due to dwindling demand and high prices.

A report by International Data Corporation (IDC) says that the Indian smartphone market maintained a flat 44 million units of shipments in Q3, resulting in a flat growth on a year-on-year basis. The ASP (average selling price) increased by 12 percent YoY and 5 percent QoQ (quarter-over-quarter) and peaked at $253 (roughly Rs. 21,000).

The report noted that vendors across all channels, online and offline, prioritised budget 5G smartphones over others. 5G smartphone shipments accounted for 25 million units, setting a record 58 percent share. Since most 5G models were released in the mass budget bracket ($100 < $200 (roughly Rs. 8,300 < Rs. 16,700)), the segment’s 5G share has increased from 34 percent to 52 percent. The top three 5G models shipped in the third quarter of the year were Apple’s iPhone 13, Xiaomi’s Redmi 12, and Samsung’s Galaxy A14.

Samsung overtook Vivo as the most popular brand, despite a YoY fall in shipments. Among the top five brands, Samsung had the highest ASP at $381 (roughly Rs. 31,700), increasing 43 percent year over year. The report also noted that with the help of the recently released Realme C53 and Realme 11x, the Chinese brand rose to the second position. With the exception of iQoo, Vivo had the fastest growth among the top five brands, thanks to its reasonably priced Vivo Y and Vivo T series phones. Poco and OnePlus both saw YoY growth of 50 percent or more, with the OnePlus Nord CE3 Lite accounting for 35 percent of shipments.

In just one quarter, shipments of foldable phones reached a record 500,000 units, with Samsung holding a 66 percent market share. The average selling price of foldable phones dropped from $1,319 (roughly Rs. 1,09,800) to $1,198 (roughly Rs. 99,800) from a year ago owing to new releases by Motorola at cheaper price points.

Shipments via offline channels grew by double digits in Q3 2023 and remained bigger than online channels. According to the report, a number of eTailer events (like Amazon Great India Festival and Flipkart’s Big Billion Days) with exclusive online deals and special platform pricing helped boost demand online.
