Samsung Galaxy Ring Teased at Galaxy Unpacked 2024 Event: What to Expect

Samsung teased a new product during the Galaxy Unpacked event on Wednesday, January 17. The company showcased a new Galaxy Ring wearable. Contrary to previous reports suggesting that the much-awaited smart ring will be the ‘highlight product’ at the event, the South Korean tech giant only revealed a small teaser video of the wearable. The Galaxy S24 series of smartphones was unveiled on Wednesday and the teaser was played towards the end of the event. Apart from how the Galaxy Ring looks, we do not know much about its features or launch timeline.

In the short teaser played at the end of the Galaxy Unpacked event, we see the Galaxy Ring with a smooth, circular body in a black shade. The underside of the ring is seen housing several sensors, which are expected to help with the user’s health and fitness tracking.

Samsung Galaxy Ring

The device was claimed to be a “powerful and accessible health and wellness device.” It is said to integrate innovations offered by Samsung Health with its features but no further details were revealed. Notably, the Galaxy Ring, or at least its outline, can be seen towards the end of a Samsung Health promotional video.

Like most health and fitness trackers, the Galaxy Ring had previously been tipped to be able to track, measure, monitor, and upload health, fitness, and sleep-related data to relevant software. A trademark filing had been claimed to state that the smart ring would manage and assess “biometric and physiological data, vital signs and personal health records.” It could also tell users to seek medical advice if and when required, based on the data.

Another leak had suggested that the Samsung Galaxy Ring could be equipped with electrocardiogram (ECG) and photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors. It is also expected to offer a longer battery life than smartwatches since smart rings do not have to carry displays on them. The company has not yet confirmed these features or any other details of the smart ring. It has not announced a launch timeline for the smart wearable as well. Speculations on the matter suggest that it may be introduced to the market later this year, alongside the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6.

Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 alongside the Galaxy Tab S9 series and Galaxy Watch 6 series at its first Galaxy Unpacked event in South Korea. Samsung’s first Galaxy Unpacked event of the year is just hours away. Ahead of the grand launch event, alleged promotional videos of the Galaxy S24 series have surfaced online offering a first look at the inbuilt Galaxy AI capabilities of the smartphones. The video suggests live translate and photo editing tools on the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra. The on-device AI technology is expected to provide real-time translations during calls.

X user Arsene Lupin (@MysteryLupin) has posted an alleged promotional video of the upcoming Galaxy S24 series. It offers a close-up look at the AI-based features of the smartphones. The handsets appear to come with new AI camera features that allow users to shrink, delete, and move objects in a photo. Users can edit the photo by shrinking or enlarging objects and moving them around by drawing a circle around the object.

The Galaxy S24 family could run on Android 14-based One UI 6.1 and Samsung is said to provide seven years of software support for the new flagships. They are expected to pack Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC for Galaxy. Meanwhile, the Indian variants of Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ could be powered by the Exynos 2400 chip.

Apple Tops Samsung in Global Smartphone Shipments for First Time Since 2010: IDC

Apple surpassed Samsung to ship the most smartphones in 2023, shows a new report by market research firm IDC. It’s the first time the Cupertino-based tech giant has overtaken Samsung in worldwide smartphone shipments since 2010. Apple’s rise comes on the heels of the increasing popularity of premium iPhone models and aggressive trade-in offers. Global smartphone shipments dropped 3.2 percent year-on-year (YoY) in 2023. However, the last quarter of 2023 saw 8.5 percent year-on-year growth, indicating an expected recovery in 2024. Xiaomi is in a close third spot and other Chinese smartphone brands including Oppo and Transsion Holdings round up the top five slots.

According to analyst firm IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, global smartphone shipments dropped 3.2 percent YoY to 1.17 billion units in 2023 due to a difficult macroeconomic environment and elevated inventory. The fourth quarter of 2023 saw 8.5 percent year-over-year growth and 326.1 million shipments.

For the first time, Apple topped global smartphone sales outpacing Samsung and other Android phone makers. The iPhone maker enjoyed a 20.1 percent market share last year by shipping 234.6 million units. The South Korean smartphone brand shipped 226.6 million units and grabbed 19.4 percent market share. Xiaomi took the third spot by shipping 145.9 million units with a 12.5 percent market share.

Oppo and Transsion came in fourth and fifth, respectively. Oppo shipped 103.1 million units and got an 8.8 percent market share, while Transsion shipped 94.9 million smartphones and received an 8.1 percent market share.

In the last quarter of 2023, Apple led the market with a 24.7 percent market share, followed by Samsung, Xiaomi, Transsion, and Vivo in the top five places. IDC notes that the last time Samsung was not on top of the smartphone market was 13 years ago in 2010. Apple’s performance is attributed to the increasing trend of premium devices and interest-free financing plans.

“While we saw some strong growth from low-end Android players like Transsion and Xiaomi in the second half of 2023, stemming from rapid growth in emerging markets, the biggest winner is clearly Apple,” said IDC’s Worldwide Tracker team research director Nabila Popal. “Not only is Apple the only player in the Top 3 to show positive growth annually, but also bags the number 1 spot annually for the first time ever. All this despite facing increased regulatory challenges and renewed competition from Huawei in China, its largest market” he added.

Despite the decline in global smartphone shipments in 2023, the market is expected to recover in 2024, fueled by new launches and diversification of Android players. IDC’s Worldwide Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers Vice President Ryan Reith opined that the overall Android space is diversifying within itself. Huawei is making inroads quickly within China, and brands like OnePlus, Honor, Google, and others are launching competitive devices in the higher mid-range segment. Foldables and increased discussions around AI capabilities are gaining momentum indicating competitive market trends ahead.

Apple unveiled its first mixed reality headset, the Apple Vision Pro, at its annual developer conference, along with new Mac models and upcoming software updates. Samsung Galaxy S24 Series May Get 7 Years of Android Updates; Online Exclusive Colour Options Tipped

Samsung is expected to take wraps off the Galaxy S24 series at its Unpacked event on January 17. Ahead of the launch, numerous leaks have already revealed much about the three flagships. A recent report suggests that the Galaxy S24 series will get seven years of software updates. Samsung’s major rival, Google, also announced seven years of Android updates for the Pixel 8 family. Additionally, pre-order benefits and online exclusive colour options of the Galaxy S24 for the European market have leaked online.

As per a report by Android Headlines, Samsung will provide the Galaxy S24 lineup with seven years of software support. Presumably, this will be full Android and One UI updates. Samsung provided four Android generation upgrades and five years of security updates for the Galaxy S23 series last year. If the new rumour turns out to be true, other smartphone makers might also follow Samsung’s suit.

Google, during the Pixel launch event in October last year, also promised seven years of software and security updates for the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro.

Additionally, a new report by Sam Insider seems to have revealed the colour options and pre-order benefits of the Galaxy S24, the Galaxy S24+, and the Galaxy S24 Ultra in Europe. The Galaxy S24 Ultra could be offered in three exclusive online colours — titanium green, titanium blue, and titanium orange. The Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ are said to come in jade green, sapphire blue, and sandstone orange shades.

The promotional offers are similar to what Samsung has done in the past. The company will reportedly offer double storage space for the Galaxy S24 variant without any additional charges. If a buyer places an order for a 128GB storage variant, it could bumped up to the 256GB variant for the same price. Similarly, users can pay for a 256GB variant and get a 512GB storage model. The 1TB storage version of Galaxy S24 Ultra can be grabbed for the price tag of the 512GB variant. However, the 1TB option could be limited to 2000 units across all participating retailers.

Samsung’s trade-in bonus programme could provide a guaranteed EUR 100 bonus on the purchase of any Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, or Galaxy S24 Ultra while trading in an old smartphone or tablet.
