Samsung Galaxy S24 Series Could Offer Satellite Communication Support: Report

Samsung Galaxy S24 series is likely to offer satellite communication support, according to details reportedly shared by a company executive. According to a Sisa Journal-E report (translated from Korean), Samsung Electronics System LSI Business Head Yong-In Park stated during a recent presentation that the South Korean tech conglomerate was preparing to offer support for satellite communication on its smartphones next year. With the Samsung Galaxy S24 series of smartphones expected to debut in Q1 2024, these handsets are likely to be the first to support the feature.

According to the report, the Samsung executive said that the company has already made preparations to support smartphone communications using a satellite. Yong-In Park, who made the announcement at the 2023 Semiconductor Expo, did not specify a timeline for the functionality to be enabled, or reveal which phones would support the feature. 

It is worth noting that Apple announced support for non-terrestrial networks (NTN) communication via its Emergency SOS satellite feature with the iPhone 14 series of smartphones in 2022, and the company’s latest phones — including the iPhone 15 Pro Max — also support the feature. Earlier this year, Qualcomm announced Snapdragon Satellite support on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, but the feature was not enabled on the Samsung Galaxy S23 series of smartphones.

On the other hand, Samsung’s own Exynos 5300 modem that features on its Exynos 2400 mobile processor as well as Google’s Tensor G2 (Pixel 7) and Tensor G3 (Pixel 8) chips, also supports NTN connectivity. Samsung is yet to reveal whether it will enable support for satellite communication on its Exynos 2400 chip — expected to power the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ — or the recently unveiled Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip that is tipped to power the top-of-the-line Galaxy S23 Ultra handset.

It’s also unclear whether Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series of smartphones — comprising the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, and Galaxy S23 Ultra — as well as the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 will offer support for emergency satellite connectivity. TM Roh, president and head of Samsung’s mobile experience business division, previously stated that satellite functionality was still quite restricted on smartphones and that it was too soon to implement the feature on Samsung handsets.

The leaked renders show the handset from all angles in a light blue shade and indicate minimal changes from this year’s Galaxy S23. It is seen with a flat frame design with slightly rounded edges and the display has a hole-punch cutout to house the selfie shooter. Further, it will reportedly include an Ultra-Wideband (UWB) antenna on the right side. If this rumour turns out to be true, this would be the first time Samsung has packed support for the UWB technology on the Galaxy S series.

At the back, the Galaxy S24 is seen with a triple rear camera unit along with an LED flash in a matte finish. In a similar design to the Galaxy S23, three separate camera sensors are placed below one another with protruding camera rings and an LED flash.

Known tipster Ice Universe (@UniverseIce) on X claims that Samsung will revamp the telephoto camera on the Galaxy S24 Ultra. As per the post, the upcoming flagship handset will feature a 50-megapixel telephoto sensor with 1/2.52-inch size, 0.7μm pixels and 5x optical zoom. The device is also said to include a 10-megapixel sensor with 3x optical zooming capability.

The tipster states that this would give the Galaxy S24 Ultra a weaker telephoto camera performance than the Xiaomi 13 Ultra. The latter has two 50-megapixel sensors with 1/2.52-inch size 0.7μm pixel for telephoto and periscope lenses with 3x and 5x optical zoom.

If this rumour turns out to be true, Galaxy S24 Ultra’s zoom capabilities will be similar to the newly released iPhone 15 Pro Max. In a post from a now-deleted X profile, user @hyacokr_itnyang reportedly stated that the Galaxy S24 Ultra could come with a 48-megapixel sensor with 5x zoom, according to a Gizmochina report. The leak added that the South Korean tech giant had initially intended to pack a 50-megapixel sensor with 10x zoom, but ditched the original plans amid image output quality concerns.

An earlier report suggested that the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is likely to feature a 200-megapixel Samsung ISOCELL HP2SX sensor. It is expected to be an upgraded version of the ISOCELL HP2 sensor used in the Galaxy S23 Ultra. The purported sensor is said to include 200 million pixels in a 1/1.3 optical format and has 0.6-micron pixels (μm).

Most recently, more details about the handsets have surfaced online. They are said to come with a new chip, improved RAM, and upgraded displays over the current models. The Galaxy S24 family could pack OLED displays made using the M13 material. The Ultra model is expected to pack 16GB of RAM as well.

As per a report by the Korean publication Chosun, Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra smartphones will feature new OLED displays made using the M13 material. These panels will reportedly offer improved performance over the previous M12 OLED panels used in the Galaxy S23 lineup. It could be lighter and will be more power efficient than older models.

Samsung is said to have added M12 OLED displays on its new Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 foldables. Last year’s iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max also have the same panels, says the report. Samsung Galaxy S24+ is expected to debut early next year as one of the successors to the Galaxy S23 series of smartphones that were launched by Samsung in February. Months ahead of its expected debut, the handset has been spotted on a benchmarking website, which lists out some of the specifications of the phone. The upcoming S-series flagship smartphone is tipped to arrive in two versions — one powered by Qualcomm’s yet-to-be-unveiled Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, and the other powered by an in-house Exynos chip from the South Korean company.

A Geekbench listing for a smartphone with the model number SM-S926U, which is believed to be the upcoming Galaxy S24+ handset surfaced on the benchmarking website on Monday. It is listed to be powered by a chipset codenamed pineapple, which is shown to be equipped with a different cluster setup than Qualcomm’s current-generation Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 flagship SoC.

The chipset mentioned in the listing has a prime Cortex-X4 core, that has a clock speed of 3.30GHz along with three Cortex-A720 cores clocked at 3.15GHz, two Cortex-A720 cores clocked at 2.96GHz, and two Cortex-A520 cores clocked at 2.27GHz. The handset could be equipped with 8GB of memory and run on Android 14 out-of-the-box, according to the Geekbench entry.
