Nothing Schedules an Event During MWC 2024; May Offer a Sneak Peek at Phone 3

Nothing Phone 2 was launched in India in July this year as the second smartphone offering from the UK-based brand. The Nothing Phone 3 is expected to break the covers as a possible successor of the Phone 2 around a similar time in 2024. Now, the Carl Pei-led company has announced an event for February 2024 at the Mobile World Congress (MWC). This could be the first hint at its next product release. Notably, Nothing confirmed the arrival of Nothing Phone 2 during the MWC 2023.

Through a media invite, (via RapidZapper) Nothing has revealed that it has scheduled an event for the MWC 2024. The event billed as ‘Nothing to See’ will take place on February 27. The MWC 2024 event runs between February 26 and February 29 in Barcelona.

If Nothing’s past moves are anything to judge by, we can consider the February event an early teaser for the Nothing Phone 3 or Phone (2a). Nothing used previous MWC conferences to build hype for its Phone 1 and Phone 2. Carl Pei showcased a prototype of the Nothing Phone 1 back in MWC 2022 whereas the brand confirmed the Snapdragon 8-series processor for Phone 2 at this year’s MWC.

Rumours about the Nothing Phone 3 or Phone (2a) have already emerged on the Web earlier. The company is speculated to stick to its transparent back design with the next handset.

A Nothing smartphone with the model number A142 was recently spotted on the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) website. It is expected to come with a 6.7-inch AMOLED display and could include a mid-range Snapdragon or MediaTek Dimensity chipset.

Nothing currently has the Nothing Phone 1 and Nothing Phone 2 in its smartphone portfolio. The latter was unveiled in July with a starting price of Rs. 44,999 for the base 8GB RAM + 128GB storage configuration. It runs on the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC and features a revised Glyph Interface with LED lighting.

Will the Nothing Phone 2 serve as the successor to the Phone 1, or will the two co-exist? We discuss the company’s recently launched handset and more on the latest episode of Orbital, the Gadgets 360 podcast. Oppo Zero-Power Tag Prototype for Tracking Objects Without Battery Showcased at MWC 2023: Details

Among the many Oppo products and prototype devices showcased at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2023, the company also showcased its first Zero-Power Tag. The prototype object tracker is the first device from the company to be unveiled after it revealed plans to develop IoT products that do not rely on battery power, in a whitepaper released early last year. The device, which looks like a visitor’s ID card, functions in a manner that is very similar to Apple’s AirTag or a Tile tracker, but does not require a battery to power itself.

Oppo explained that its first prototype device leverages several technologies. This includes RF signal harvesting, backscattering and low-power computing. It powers itself by harvesting ambient radiofrequency energy from the environment to generate power. This RF energy emanates from various sources, including TV towers, FM radio towers and more commonly cellular base stations. The same can even be powered by Wi-Fi access points.

Once powered up, the device is then smart enough to modulate ambient radio signals with its own information, transmitting signals outwards, in a process known as backscattering. Beyond this, it’s up to existing networks to pick them up and connect the dots, which in this case involves revealing its location. Oppo’s working prototype is not only capable of item identification and positioning, but can also collect data from temperature sensors.

While Oppo is currently targeting the “diverse needs of IoT in the coming 6G era”, its earlier whitepaper had some ambitious plans for its Zero-power communication technology. Since the technology avoids the use of batteries like on an Apple AirTag, these can be a lot smaller than the card-like device showcased at MWC 2023. This makes them quite compact and also low-cost. Oppo explained that this allows it to use Zero-power Communication technology to be used in a variety of commercial applications like warehousing, logistics and agriculture apart from the more common use cases like wearables, smart homes and more.

Since the technology has a smaller environmental impact, there’s room for broader applications like tracking migratory birds, animals and more by using more effective long-distance tracking devices. Oppo claims that its technology is far superior when compared to passive communication technology like radio frequency identification (RFID) technology, which is currently used in a wide variety of applications but is limited to short communication distances and low efficiency when it comes to powering them.

It is likely that Oppo’s Zero-Power Tag will see its form factor change before the company launches a consumer product powered by the underlying technology for the masses. But an object tracker with this technology isn’t expected to happen anytime soon.

Motorola Rizr Concept With Rollable 6.5-Inch POLED Display Spotted at MWC 2023: Report

Motorola when it comes to foldables still appears to stick to its clamshell design, which is based on its original clamshell feature phone, the Razr (V3), which was announced back in 2003. With the current gen Motorola Razr 2022 foldable that features two displays, including one inner folding display, is still exclusive to China and the company has now reportedly showcased a new rollable concept at the ongoing Mobile World Congress 2023 (MWC 2023). Motorola is said to have branded the handset as the “Rizr” and while it’s still a concept device, it could give us a glimpse of things to come.

According to Twitter user Ben Wood, the device is still in the concept stage, even though a functional working concept was showcased at the unveiling. As the source points out, the name of the smartphone has not been finalised yet, but according to Android Police it’s been referred to as the Rizr as it goes with the sliding form factor of the older feature phone. While hands-on demos have been provided, Motorola has revealed very little about this prototype’s specifications.

From various reports, it is known that the device that has been showcased at MWC2023 has a 5-inch POLED display with a 15:9 aspect ratio that can reportedly expand to 6.5-inches (in a 22:9 aspect ratio) when needed. The part of the display that’s not in use when rolled up, is said to wrap around the bottom and slides up on the back over the rear panel. So, when flipped over, the rolled up display on the back is said to double up as a secondary display, which can be used for showing notifications, just like the outer display on a regular clamshell foldable.

The software interface has also been customised by Motorola to take advantage of the foldable display, as per the report. The interface and apps are said to stretch and change depending on the state of the display and is smart enough to adapt depending on the content being viewed or the app being used. For example, when in the YouTube app, the display is said to automatically expand when the device is held horizontally to showcase a video in fullscreen.

The rollable display is said to be driven by a small motor that takes up space in the phone, which is why the battery reportedly has a limited 3,000mAh capacity. The phone is quite thick (even with the transparent protective case on) and weighs 210g, as per the report, which is a bit heavier than an Apple iPhone 14 Pro. There appear to be two cameras on the back and a selfie camera along with a speaker grille and sensors are reportedly revealed when the rollable display on the front drops even further when placing calls or clicking selfies.

While the Xiaomi 13 and the Xiaomi 13 Pro are powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, the Lite version in the series comes equipped with a Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC.

Xiaomi 13 Lite specifications

The smartphone, which did not launch in China along with the Xiaomi 13 series, is a rebadged version of the Xiaomi Civi 2. The smartphone runs Android 12 out-of-the-box with MIUI 13 skin. The smartphone is powered by a Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC coupled with 8GB RAM.

Xiaomi 13 Lite gets a 6.55-inch full-HD+ AMOLED panel with a 120Hz screen refresh rate. Similar to the other two Xiaomi 13 variants, this smartphone also gets a triple camera unit on the back. With a 50-megapixel primary camera, the other two sensors include an 8-megapixel and a 2-megapixel camera. However, the company is focusing on selfie pictures with this smartphone, which gets two selfie camera sensors in a pill-shaped notch, where both sensors are 32-megapixel cameras.

It will be backed by a 4,500mAh battery that gets Xiaomi’s 67W TurboCharge technology.

MediaTek to Unveil Satellite Connectivity on Android Phones at MWC 2023, Showcase Dimensity 9200 SoC

MediaTek has announced that it will be showcasing a host of demos on innovations and developments undertaken by the chipset manufacturer at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2023 scheduled to commence in Barcelona, Spain on February 27, 2023. The demonstrations will include MediaTek’s take on enabling satellite connectivity on Android smartphones, through support for 3GPP Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) in its chips. The company has also announced that it plans to launch support for 5G New Radio NTN (NR-NTN) in the near future. The development comes after rival companies have also made similar plans public, with Qualcomm announcing Snapdragon Satellite, while Samsung has also debuted its take on the technology for its’ Exynos chipsets.

Satellite communication technology, or support for 3GPP Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) in chipsets, will allow for two-way communication via satellite directly from an Android smartphone.
