Heroes, zeros from Giants’ loss to Vikings: Greg Joseph answers call

Heroes, zeros and the full blitz from the Giants’ 27-24 loss to the Vikings.

Hero

Greg Joseph drilled a game-winning 61-yard field goal despite having made just two of his first seven field-goal attempts from 50-plus yards this season.

Zero

With four minutes remaining, a Jamie Gillan punt was blocked, gifting the ball to the Vikings at the Giants’ 29-yard line, from where they drove for a lead-extending touchdown. Long snapper Casey Kreiter was bowled over and the block came up the middle.

Unsung hero

Daniel Jones completed 30 of 42 passes for a season-high 334 yards with a touchdown and an interception and ran for another 34 yards. He led the game-tying, seven-play, 75-yard touchdown drive, completing the 2-point conversion pass with 2:01 to go.

Key stat

11-0 Minnesota’s record in one-score games, the best start to a season in NFL history in that statistic. The Giants fell to 8-3-1 in a NFL-high 12 one-score games.

Giants can deliver Christmas gift earlier than expected

MINNEAPOLIS — Five years. Five years spent wondering where it had all gone wrong. Five years agonizing over why the latest new head coach turned out to be the latest wrong head coach, why the general manager wasn’t any savior. Why this, why that.

Five years that reminded you of the dark wilderness years when your fans were in revolt, and your father and uncle needed to be separated by NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle, and George Young was summoned to rescue the franchise.

No one deserved a season like this one more than John Mara, the biggest Giants fan of them all.

’Tis the day before what could be an improbable and exhilarating Mara Christmas, for the devoted owner, for Giants fans everywhere.

Back up from Rock Bottom, here come the New York Football Giants, hungering for a win over the Vikings on Saturday that could … with help … secure their first playoff berth since 2016.

Here comes Brian Daboll, the competent, culture-changing head coach Mara couldn’t find until he blew it all up and trusted rookie general manager Joe Schoen to find one for him.

Here comes Daniel Jones, bloodied, but unbowed, following three years of Quarterbacking 101 negligence, an ugly duckling blossoming into a beautiful swan before our eyes under Daboll’s guidance.

Here comes Pro Bowler Saquon Barkley, running to daylight on two healthy knees again.

Here comes Kayvon Thibodeaux, who had himself a Lawrence Taylor night against the Commanders and isn’t interested in being any one-hit wonder. Alongside will be Pro Bowler Dexter Lawrence and what will need to be a Big Blue Wrecking Crew to keep Kirk Cousins from playing catch with otherworldly Justin Jefferson, or perhaps leading another comeback for the ages.

Here comes defensive coordinator Wink Martindale, with his infectious swagger, keeping the Giants in virtually every game with half his secondary on the sideline.

Here comes Graham “The Toe” Gano, automatic weapon.

From 2018-21, Mara watched his Giants play 65 games. He watched them lose 46 of those games.

Barkley was filled with hope and optimism before his first NFL game. He and Odell Beckham Jr. were going to be a dynamic duo. Eli Manning was years away from the Manningcast.

New York Post

“I believe that this team has a great chance to be a great team,” Barkley said at the time.

It didn’t. It wasn’t. From 2018-21, Barkley was 19-46 as a Giant, too.

Now? Now he is 8-5-1 this season. The playoffs aren’t fourth-and-long. The playoffs are first-and-goal.

“I can feel it. I’m hungry for him,” Thibodeaux told The Post. “He’s brought out the beast in me, in just seeing we really do have a chance, and this is something that doesn’t come by easy.”

From 2019-21, Jones was 14-35.

“He doesn’t even know if he’s getting a contract next year,” Thibodeaux said, “and that’s none of my business. I don’t know whatever goes into it. But it’s just like the relentlessness to continue to play with all of these pressures being the quarterback in New York City, hats off to him ’cause he’s just been delivering week in and week out.”

Daniel Jones, left, and Saquon Barkley jog off the field after the Giants’ win over the Commanders on Dec. 18.
USA TODAY Sports

It should be a no-brainer that the twin faces of the franchise, Jones and Barkley, deserve to keep delivering for the 2023 Giants and beyond.

“We gotta keep good things going,” Thibodeaux said. “You don’t need to fix something that’s not broken.”

Mara’s Giants are no longer broken.

“If I had a voice,” Thibodeaux said, “I’d say those are our leaders, and I love being on the team with ’em, and I feel like they’re gonna lead us to greatness.”

It’s Year 1 of the rebuilding, and here come the New York Football Giants anyway, ready, willing and Daboll to gift themselves their first Mara Christmas in what seems like an eternity.

YouTube TV Wins Right to Broadcast Most NFL Games in the US Next Year

The YouTube video platform has won the right to broadcast most NFL football games in the US next year, it announced Thursday, a major win by the Google subsidiary that underscores the growing role of streaming in sports.

Google will pay around $2 billion (roughly Rs. 17,000 crore) a year over seven years, US media reported, for the right to broadcast Sunday games on its subscription YouTube TV service, available only in the United States.

YouTube TV subscribers, who now pay $64.99 (roughly Rs. 5,500) a month for a viewing package, will have to pay an added fee — as yet undetermined — to view the games, or they can view them on an a-la-carte basis on its YouTube Primetime Channels platform.

They will not be able to see games involving their local teams, which are covered by a separate contract.

Moreover, YouTube TV will not have exclusive rights — the Fox and CBS networks will continue to share some broadcasting rights within the United States.

National Football League commissioner Roger Goodell welcomed the development, saying it ushered in a “new era of how fans across the United States watch and follow the NFL.”

For years the NFL has built a growing presence on YouTube, with videos offering game summaries and highlights.

That has allowed the league to reach a younger audience — one that favours short, punchy videos over broadcasts of full matches, which can last three hours or more.

“This partnership is yet another example of us looking towards the future and building the next generation of NFL fans,” Goodell said.

The NFL’s official YouTube channel currently has more than 10 million subscribers, who regularly watch short videos showing high points from one of the world’s most powerful sports leagues.

The NFL wants to further exploit its new arrangement by providing more official content to YouTube and connecting YouTube creators to its events.

The rights being purchased by YouTube TV were previously held by satellite operator DirecTV, which paid the NFL around $1.5 billion (roughly Rs. 12,500 crore) a year, according to several US media.

YouTube TV has more than five million subscribers, and hopes the new deal will help it greatly extend its reach.

Patriots’ Trent Brown ‘likes’ post about replacing Mac Jones

Trouble in New England?

Patriots left tackle Trent Brown was caught liking an Instagram post that suggested New England should replace quarterback Mac Jones – whom the team drafted No. 15 overall in 2021 – with either Tom Brady or 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, according to screengrabs shared on Twitter.

ESPN’s NFL account had shared a quote from writer Bill Barnwell that suggested New England may consider moving on from Jones after just two years as the starting quarterback.

“The Patriots have to at least call Brady’s people to inquire whether he would like to return to New England to finish out his career,” the quote on the post read. “They could also pursue Garoppolo.”

Both Brady and Garoppolo have played in New England before, Brady for 20 years and Garoppolo for three-plus seasons as his backup. Garoppolo was then traded to the 49ers in 2017, where he has had several stints as the starting QB for San Francisco – most recently this season until an injury knocked him out of the lineup.

Brown, 29, played with the Patriots in 2018 while Brady was still the starter. He joined the Raiders in 2019 but returned to New England in 2021, Jones’ first season as the signal-caller.

Clearly, Brown isn’t that impressed with Jones’ performance thus far. The former Alabama quarterback had an notable rookie season, leading New England to a playoff berth in 2021 while securing a Pro Bowl nod. However, he has struggled along with the whole offense in 2022. Through 11 games, Jones has thrown for 2,310 yards, seven touchdowns and eight interceptions, and his passer rating has dropped 10 points since last season.

The offense as a whole has missed former offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who left to be the Raiders’ head coach in the offseason. Matt Patricia, former Lions head coach and the Patriots’ defensive coordinator before that, has been calling plays for the Patriots’ offense this season.

Perhaps the Patriots could look to upgrade the coaching staff, but if they choose to change quarterbacks instead at least one of their players appears like he would welcome that decision.

Fan in Gumby suit drinks bear through eye on MNF

The “Manningcast” always features a slate of guests, but this unscripted, beer-drinking cameo had the brothers cracking up.

Peyton and Eli Manning’s ESPN2 alternative to “Monday Night Football” continues to produce laughs for fans. As the show came back from break during the Rams-Packers game, the cameras zoomed in on a spectator at Lambeau Field dressed in a Gumby costume.

What was already a funny cameo turned into a hilarious show for the Manning’s as Gumby began to drink a beer through the costume’s eye.

Eli added some comedy to the spectacle, providing some expert analysis to the bizarre scene.

“Welcome back to Lambeau, we got Gumby in the house drinking a beer through his eye,” he said. “I’ve never seen that technique but you gotta do what you gotta do.”

Peyton couldn’t stop laughing as his brother commented on the costumed character’s antics.

The Packers lead the Rams 10-6 at halftime and with both team out of the NFC playoff race a little added levity is never a bad thing, dammit.

Browns vs. Ravens predictions and analysis

The Ravens (9-4) overcame quarterback health issues to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 16-14 last week to remain tied with Cincinnati for the AFC North lead. Tyler Huntley started in place of Lamar Jackson (knee) but took a jarring hit to the head and left the game due to concussion protocol. Rookie Anthony Brown finished the job. But Huntley was a full participant in practice Wednesday and is trending toward playing against the Browns (while Jackson is not).

Cleveland (5-8) will be desperate for a win to remain barely afloat in the AFC playoff race. The Browns had won consecutive games for the first time all season when they beat Tampa Bay and Houston, but that streak ended with a 23-10 loss to the Bengals, Joe Burrow’s first time beating Cleveland. Deshaun Watson improved slightly in his second game back from an 11-game suspension for sexual misconduct lawsuits. But will it be too little, too late for the Browns in the bigger picture?

Ravens moneyline

It can be hard to trust the Ravens this season. Though 9-4, they’re only 5-7-1 against the spread. All four of their losses have come from blowing second-half leads against the Dolphins, Bills, Giants and Jaguars.

But we need to put those concerns aside and believe in the Ravens this week for several reasons, starting with the fact that this series has been historically lopsided — Baltimore has won 24 of the past 29 meetings, including five of the past six.

No matter if it’s Huntley or Brown at quarterback, the Ravens’ identity is a strong defense and reliance on the run game. They beat the Browns 23-20 earlier this season with 160 rushing yards and just 94 passing yards; Huntley and Brown only had to combine for 94 passing yards last week against Pittsburgh because the Ravens gained 215 yards on 42 carries.

Betting on the NFL?

The Browns rank roughly in the bottom third of the league in rushing defense (128.1 ypg allowed) and have several linebackers injured, most recently Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, who was placed on IR. On top of that, defense travels. The Ravens have yielded less than 10 points per game over their past four victories.

The line is the way it is most likely due to Jackson’s and Huntley’s injuries. Get the Ravens at this number while you can; they’re clearly the better team.

Browns vs. Ravens pick: Ravens money line @ +135 with Caesars Sportsbook

Under 37 total points

The Ravens have hit the over just four times in 13 games. It sure helps to have a defense that yields just 19.2 points per game (eighth in the NFL) and 81.2 yards per game (second).

The Browns’ run game struggled last week, gaining just 71 yards against the Bengals, and Baltimore has held the Browns to 84.3 rushing yards on average over their past three meetings.

The Ravens’ acquisition of linebacker Roquan Smith has truly bolstered the defense against both the run and the pass.

And while the Browns are 7-5-1 in the O/U category this year, the under has hit in each of their past three games. The transition to Watson at quarterback has come with growing pains.

Browns vs. Ravens pick: Under 37 points scored @ -110 with Caesars Sportsbook

Deshaun Watson to throw over 0.5 interceptions

Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett exited Sunday’s game early with a concussion, and Mitch Trubisky took the bulk of the snaps against the Ravens.

End result: three more interceptions for the Baltimore defense’s total. Smith and fellow linebacker Patrick Queen each grabbed one, along with safety Marcus Williams, who leads the team with four.

The Ravens are now tied for second in the league with 14 interceptions over 13 games. That’s helped them to a plus-9 turnover differential, also second-best in the NFL behind Philadelphia.

Watson has had plenty of rust to shake off after sitting out all of 2021 and more than half of this season. He’s thrown one interception in each of his first two games. Bet on the Ravens to make that three straight.

Tom Brady loses cool over question about altering Buccaneers’ game plan

The pressure may be getting to Tom Brady.

The Buccaneers quarterback nearly lost his cool on Thursday when asked about a report by the San Francisco Chronicle, which claims the seven-time Super Bowl winner changes the team’s offensive gameplan without informing head coach Todd Bowles or offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich.

According to the Chronicle, on the night before each game, Brady holds a separate meeting with the Buccaneers’ skill players to go over the gameplan, and makes tweaks to assignments and formations before handing off a revised blueprint to the coaching staff — which is left in the dark until gameday.

When asked if there is any truth to the report, a seemingly frustrated Brady said, “No. I have no idea. I mean, anybody can write anything, and say whatever they want. So, no. … I’m not gonna respond to every — next question.”

Frustration seems to be the central theme of Brady’s third season with Tampa Bay — following his decision to come out of retirement in March to play a 23rd season. This campaign has not been glamorous, and includes a number of F-bomb-fueled rants.

Sunday’s loss put the NFC South-leading Bucs a single game ahead of the Atlanta Falcons (5-8) and Carolina Panthers (5-8).

Brady finished 34 for 55 for 253 yards with one touchdown and the two interceptions. He was outshined by San Francisco’s “Mr. Irrelevant,” Brock Purdy — the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Purdy, who turns 23 this month, became the first quarterback ever to best Brady in his first start.

After the game, Brady said his team has “a lot of work to do” in the four remaining weeks of the regular season.

“We’ve got to do a better job,” he said. “Today was not good enough.”

The 45-year-old Brady even skipped a postgame shower before the long flight to Tampa Bay from San Fransisco, telling the San Francisco Chronicle, “F–k that. I’m going home.”

It’s been a season of highs and lows for Brady, both on and off the field.

In October, the quarterback announced his divorce from his wife of 13 years, supermodel Gisele Bündchen — with whom he shares two children, 13-year-old Benjamin and 10-year-old Vivian. Brady also has a 15-year-old son, Jack, from a prior relationship with actress Bridget Moynahan.

According to the Chronicle, one member of the Bucs’ organization described Brady’s emotional state amid the breakup: “It’s like seeing Superman without his cape.”

Jets must embrace potential QB reality they’ve tried to avoid

Cutting against the grain of franchise tradition, the 2022 Jets have said and done a lot of smart things. Their ranks include many talented and accountable players, and people who know what they are doing in the roles of general manager and head coach.

But as the Jets prepare for a critical game at Minnesota and the beginning of a six-game playoff push, they are struggling with an elementary concept. Though there’s a chance Mike White will be a career journeyman who gets red hot here and there, there’s also a chance White will be the Jets’ long-term franchise quarterback and, at some point, the first man under center to lead them to a Super Bowl since Joe Namath.

The Jets need to put out a welcome mat to that possibility, and frankly, it doesn’t sound like they want to. Asked Thursday if he and head coach Robert Saleh are merely open to the scenario that White turns out to be the guy the franchise has been forever looking for — despite the organization’s investment in Zach Wilson, second-overall pick in the 2021 draft — offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur scrambled out of the pocket faster than a confused and/or overwhelmed Wilson ever did.

“That’s nothing in my thought process; you’d have to ask Saleh,” LaFleur said. “I can’t imagine that’s anything in his thought process right now.”

Yeah, why would the surprise uncovering of a potential high-level quarterback in the middle of a playoff race ever be in a football coach’s thought process?

Sure, LaFleur went on to say that everyone’s locked in on the Vikings, something he likely felt obligated to say. But his stated enthusiasm for White’s brilliant work against Chicago in Sunday’s rain was best described as muted, three days after Saleh committed an unforced error by stating that when the Jets “feel like Zach is ready to roll, he’s going to roll.”

Mike White can prove that he’s the Jets’ quarterback of the future.
Bill Kostroun/New York Post

Say what? How about following the lead of the players (who clearly adore White) and the fans (who clearly adore him just as much) and give the 27-year-old veteran a full shot?

And by the way, since when has Wilson ever looked ready to roll?

Saleh has seemingly devoted more thought to the idea of restoring Wilson as the starter than he has to the thought that White is never, ever giving back this job. Last year, after White shredded the Super Bowl-bound Bengals for 405 yards and three touchdowns, Saleh was willing to say of the 171st pick in the 2018 draft, “Anything is possible. … I can be the next Vince Lombardi.”

This time around, when asked if White can put together enough big Sundays to earn the full-time job, Vince Lombardi II maintained he didn’t want to entertain hypotheticals. He did say that his full intent is to get Wilson ready to play.

So let’s rush to replace the quarterback who’s thrown for more than 300 yards twice in four starts with the quarterback who’s thrown for more than 300 yards once in 20 starts?

Richard Sherman, a fifth-round pick who became a five-time Pro Bowl cornerback, is among many NFL voices having a hard time understanding this one. “If we just took everything away and swapped the stories of Zach Wilson and Mike White,” Sherman said on his podcast, “and if was just Mike White was drafted No. 2, and he’s playing this well and teammates are saying this about him, you’d be like, they made the right pick. They’ve got a franchise guy.”

That’s the way it should work, anyway. White had that brutal four-interception outing against Buffalo last year, but he seemed ready the previous week to tear apart Indianapolis (7-for-11, 95 yards, 1 touchdown) before getting hurt early. So that would be three quality starts out of four and a career completion percentage of 68.8, which dwarfs Wilson’s 55.6.

Robert Saleh must embrace the Jets’ potential quarterback reality.
Bill Kostroun/New York Post

White said he wasn’t focused on winning the starting job for keeps because, someone once told him, “The NFL is 17 one-week seasons. … When you win one week you’re on top of the world. You lose next week and it’s the end of the world.”

As he headed from the showers to his locker Thursday, with just a towel wrapped around his waist, White passed by the fully clothed Wilson, who was leaving the room. The quarterback who had been waived four times by the Jets — four — was getting ready for the starter’s weekly press conference that used to be scheduled for ol’ No. 2.

“That’s just the nature of the sport,” White said of the dramatic turnover.

Zach Wilson looks on at Jets practice on Thursday.
Bill Kostroun/New York Post
Mike White speaks to reporters after Jets practice on Thursday.
Bill Kostroun/New York Post

And once again, like last year, White pounced when the ball bounced his way. LaFleur said Wilson’s replacement “took what the defense gave him” and “just played within the offense” and that the line “protected better than we did [for Wilson] versus New England” and that receivers getting separation “makes the quarterback’s job a lot easier.”

All true. But neither the coordinator nor Saleh sound terribly eager to accept the possibility that Mike White is just a better football player than Zach Wilson. And they need to get open-minded about that sooner rather than later.

Todd Bowles turns up heat on Tom Brady, Buccaneers

Is there a rift in Tampa?

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles called out some of his players ahead of his team’s “Monday Night Football” matchup against the NFC South rival Saints.

“The leaders lead and everybody else follows,” Bowles told Buccaneers Radio Network via Joe Bucs Fan.

“So it’s time for our leaders to lead and step up. And everybody else has to follow, and make plays. Not just lead but make plays. And show them by example, show them by being vocal, show them by how they practice. And they’ve been doing that for the most part but, you know, we can’t piss away any more ball games sort of speak. So it’s time for us to step up and make plays. We got six games left until we’ve got to get in the tournament.”

The Buccaneers are coming off an overtime loss to the Cleveland Browns in which many questioned the team’s handling of time outs. It marked the first time lost when leading in the final minute of a game. He was previously 218-0 in those situations.

Brady is likely one of the leaders Bowles was referencing on Thursday, after all he is a captain of the team, and Tom Brady.

The Saints have given Brady trouble in his time at Tampa. In five regular season games against the Saints as a member of the Buccaneers, Brady has thrown eight interceptions to seven touchdowns and has a 1-4 record. However, he did lead the Bucs to a playoff victory in New Orleans on the way to a Super Bowl championship two years ago.

The Buccaneers, and the NFC South as a whole, have had a rocky season. Even though they are 5-6 the Buccaneers lead the NFC South, half a game ahead of the Falcons, who play the Steelers this week.

Patrick Peterson rips Cardinals’ Kyler Murray: ‘Don’t care about nobody’

Kyler Murray only cares about Kyler Murray.

That’s according to Patrick Peterson, who played with Murray on the Cardinals for two seasons.

Peterson co-hosts the “All Things Covered” podcast with Bryant McFadden, and McFadden hypothesized that Kliff Kingsbury will be the scapegoat in the Cardinals’ struggles.

“Ain’t no maybe — he will be! The crazy thing about it, is the guy who hired him will still have a job,” Peterson said.

McFadden, who played defensive back in the NFL from 2005-11, said that the way Murray is behaving, he is putting everything on the head coach.

“Kyler Murray don’t care about nobody but Kyler Murray. That’s just a matter of fact,” Peterson laughed.

Murray was aghast at the remark.

“This isn’t true…you on some weird s–t @P2 you got my number, if you really felt like this as a ‘big bro’ or ‘mentor’ you supposed to call me and tell me, not drag me so your podcast can grow,” Murray tweeted on Wednesday.

Peterson and Murray were teammates in Arizona in 2019 and 2020, Murray’s first two seasons in the NFL. Peterson has spent the past two seasons on the Vikings.

The Cardinals are 4-8 this season after sputtering on the back end of last season following a 7-0 start. The organization is in a bind, as it just signed Kingsbury and Murray to extensions this past offseason.

Murray’s five-year, $230 million deal with the Cardinals does not kick in until next season. The next two years have a level of dead cap — $97.5 million and $81.5 million, respectively — that makes it virtually impossible to part ways with him. The two years after that remain a bitter pill to swallow, at $33.2 and $20.2 million.
