New York Giants keeping Darren Waller retirement discussion ‘in-house’

The 2024 NFL draft is two weeks away and the New York Giants are going through the motions to get ready. Day 1 of Phase One had a good turnout and there has been lots of quarterback discussion. But one thing that people are curious about is the status of tight end Darren Waller.

Earlier this year, Waller admitted that he wasn’t sure if he would retire or continue to play. The Giants have been pretty mum on the situation, which remains unchanged even today.

Daboll was asked if he expects Waller to attend any portion of the offseason program, but the Giants head coach didn’t have any answer for that and instead said he would keep things “in-house.”

“Understand the question, completely right, have nothing to add on that from what Joe talked about a couple of weeks ago in the ownership meeting. You know, again, I just go back to our attendance was, I was very happy and pleased with our attendance. In terms of Darren’s specific situation, I’m going to keep that in-house, I have nothing to add at this time.”

With New York last year, Waller had 52 receptions for 552 receiving yards, both ranking second on the team. He was a bright spot on an offense that was more than lackluster in 2023, so it stands to reason the Giants would love to have him back on the field.

But the Giants don’t make this decision, Waller does. So the rest of us just have to wait and see what happens when everyone is ready to talk about it.

Giants’ John Mara ‘legitimately embarrassed’ by constant turnover

Since “parting ways” with Tom Coughlin following the 2015 season, there’s been nothing stable about the New York Giants.

A franchise that once prided itself on consistency and stability has turned into a hotbed of chaos. From 1947 through 2006, they had just four general managers. Since then? Three.

The situation at head coach has been even more hectic. Following Coughlin’s 12-year run, which included two Super Bowl championships, the Giants are on their fourth full-time head coach  — only one of which has survived a second season (Brian Daboll).

It’s been an ugly look for the Giants, and co-owner John Mara certainly feels it, reports Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports.

There is no indication that Brian Daboll is on the hot seat heading into his third season. But his seat isn’t exactly comfortable either — not after a season that Mara called “a huge disappointment to me.”

The last thing Mara wants to do is fire another coach, especially after he fired each of his past three after two seasons or less on the job. He craves stability for his franchise and, said one team source, “He’s legitimately embarrassed by how much turnover there’s been.”

Mara and fellow co-owner, Steve Tisch, have been quick to pull the plug over the past decade but realize the lack of consistency has plagued the organization.

Although Daboll managed to survive his second season, it wasn’t easy. The losing record aside, there were many reports of massive dysfunction within the building — something that culminated with an ugly divorce from defensive coordinator Wink Martindale.

“There are times where I wish he would tone it down a little bit,” Mara said of Daboll earlier in the offseason.

If the Giants fall flat again in 2024, it will be interesting to see how Mara and Tisch respond. Will they show potentially costly patience, fearing further embarrassment, or will they take their lumps and continue their seemingly endless cycle of change?

They hope to avoid having to make that decision. They’d rather just get back to winning.

Why a New York Giants-Bills trade for Josh Allen isn’t happening

The Buffalo Bills have been recently shuffling (dismantling?) their roster around star quarterback Josh Allen, leading a popular New York radio host to implore the New York Giants to inquire about Allen’s availability.

Evan Roberts of WFAN suggested on the air that Giants general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll — who both came from Buffalo — at least check in with the Bills on their plans for Allen, who he claims wants out of Buffalo for a bigger market to appease his girlfriend, actress/singer Hailee Steinfeld.

“Josh doesn’t have any toys anymore. Josh ain’t happy,” Roberts said. “Josh doesn’t want to live in Buffalo anymore. Josh has a girlfriend who would rather shop on Fifth Avenue in New York City than waste time in that toilet bowl known as Buffalo.

“Call up your friend, Joe, and say ‘What up’ about Josh Allen. ‘Is he available? Because if you’re sinking this ship…we have the sixth pick in the draft. We have Daniel Jones. We’ve got other assets. We’ll help you with your rebuild, and we’ll help out Josh Allen.’

“Schoen’s gotta pick up the phone and ask about Josh Allen. Why not?”

Why not? Plenty of reasons. First would be the cost. The Giants would have to trade for Allen and, as rich a franchise as they are, probably would still fall short of what the Bills would want in return.

Secondly, the notion that Allen wants out of Buffalo is “complete fiction,” says Ralph Ventre of Bills Central.

The man has done nothing but embrace the region and its fans since being drafted. Not to mention, what general manager in his right mind would trade away a soon-to-be 28-year-old franchise quarterback under contract at less than $50 million per year? According to Spotrac, Allen’s deal carries a lower average annual value than that of Deshaun Watson, Joe Burrow, Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson.

Ventre points out that the Bills’ latest roster purge (traded All-Pro wide receiver Stefon Diggs to Houston this week) is just part of the constant flow of personnel teams go through and are simply rebuilding, which is normal.

He also reminded us that Buffalo was a 10-win team and playoff contender before Diggs’ arrival in 2020.

The Bills are simply ridding themselves of aging veterans with hefty price tags. It’s a youth movement to ensure salary cap flexibility in 2025.

Meanwhile, Buffalo returns eight offensive starters and eight defensive starters from a team that won a fourth consecutive AFC East division crown this past January. In Roberts’ imaginary world, however, that’s called a “garage sale.”

Forget Josh Allen. He’s untouchable. Especially now that the Bills are building a state-of-the-art stadium, to be opened in 2026.

Any additional talk about Allen to the Giants is intended to drive engagement for personal gain and nothing more. It’s a fantasy created to fill space and create content during the dry time leading up to the 2024 NFL draft.

Marc Ross believes New York Giants could trade up for a quarterback

It is increasingly looking as if four quarterbacks could be selected in the top 5 in the 2024 NFL draft, which will take place three weeks from today.

If a team wants one of the four top signal callers (Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, J.J. McCarthy, and Jayden Daniels) they are going to have to trade up into the top 5 — and that includes the New York Giants, who hold the sixth pick.

Former Giants vice president of personnel Marc Ross, now an analyst for the NFL Network, says the Giants could be one of three teams looking to trade up for a quarterback. The other two teams mentioned are Minnesota, who hold the 11th pick, and Denver, who are at No. 12.

“If the Giants want one of the guys, they are going have to make a move,” said Ross.

“Daniel Jones — I think there’s been plenty of sample size — that he’s not the guy to get them over the hump. . . coming off the ACL, he’s been injured.

“We know Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen might be on the hot seat. Owner John Mara said at the owner’s meeting that he would give his blessing to come up and get a quarterback.

“So, you have to look at all of those factors with the Giants. ”

The Giants have been meeting with — or plan to meet with — all four of the quarterbacks expected to go high in the draft and have also met with Michael Penix Jr. of Washington.

The teams holding the first three selections (Chicago, Washington, and New England) are all expected to take quarterbacks.

The two teams at Nos. 4 and 5 — Arizona and the Los Angeles Chargers — do not need quarterbacks but are in prime position to grab one of the three top wide receivers in the draft if they choose to hold onto their selections.

Giants’ Brian Daboll among bottom third in NFL head coach rankings

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll was named the NFL’s Coach of the Year in his first season on the job in 2022 and then slipped back into the pack after a 6-11 showing last season.

Dallas Robinson of Pro Football Network recently ranked all 32 NFL head coaches in which he explains how Daboll has suddenly become very ordinary.

22) Brian Daboll, New York Giants

Regular-season record: 15-18-1 (.456)

Winner of the NFL’s 2022 Coach of the Year award, Brian Daboll went through it in 2023. Daniel Jones missed several games with a concussion before suffering a season-ending torn ACL, and the Giants were eventually forced to roll with undrafted free agent QB Tommy DeVito under center. Daboll’s sideline blowups became a talking point, while his turbulent relationship with DC Wink Martindale eventually led to the latter’s resignation.

Daboll opened his Giants career with seven wins in his first nine games but then things started to flatten out fast. Sure, the Giants made it to the playoffs and even won a game in 2022, but it was evident the initial shine had vanished off the apple.

Since Week 11 of 2022, the Giants have gone 9-17-1 (including playoffs) and have been classified by many a media talking head as a “dumpster fire.”

This after nearly a decade of ineptitude, poor management, and bad luck was the last thing Giant fans expected to happen. The 2022 playoff experience appears to have been fool’s gold. At least potentially.

However, Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen still maintain the support of ownership but need to win this season nonetheless.

Giants’ Brian Daboll wished he ‘handled things differently’ last year

Brian Daboll is switching gears as he embarks on his third season has head coach of the New York Giants.

On Tuesday morning at the NFC coaches’ breakfast with reporters at the annual league meeting in Orlando, Daboll admitted his first two seasons did not go exactly according to plan.

So, he’s evolving.

Daboll butted heads with many of his assistant coaches and even went as far to purge his staff of two coordinators (Wink Martindale and Thomas McGaughey) and several other assistants, including offensive line coach Bobby Johnson this offseason.

That contentiousness may continue with his remaining coordinator, Mike Kafka, whom Daboll has also not seen exactly eye-to-eye with. Daboll was asked if he would assume the offensive playcalling this season. He didn’t run it out.

Kafka is seen around the league as a future head coach and probably should have landed one of the half-dozen jobs he’s interviewed for the past two offseasons.

It’s clear he’ll always be second banana to Daboll here in New York, something Daboll continues to stress even though he’s promoted Kafka to assistant head coach.

Daboll’s volatile style has not escaped the eye of management. On Monday, CEO John Mara told reporters he wished Daboll would ‘tone it down’ at times but ‘I still very firmly believe that Brian is the right guy for us going forward.’

New York Giants are like a failed Blockbuster franchise

The New York Giants have the worst record of any NFC team over the past decade. That’s a fact that cannot be disputed.

The Giants’ fall from grace is frequent fodder for national talk radio and television host Colin Cowherd, who loves to take shots at the Big Blue front office and ownership.

“If you had an optimism meter in the NFL, the bottom of it has to be Carolina and the Giants if they lose Saquon Barkley,” Cowherd said this week on his daily show on FOX Sports, via Awful Announcing.

“Daniel Jones in games that Saquon doesn’t play is 8-14. When I look at the Giants, when I was back there years ago, I felt like it was this great successful accounting firm. They feel like Blockbuster Video. They have not pivoted. Not very good upstairs. In 12 seasons since winning the Super Bowl, they have one double-digit winning season. And that is in the weaker NFC.

“Outside of Carolina, what is a bigger mess in the NFL? You have an owner that wants a quarterback that the GM and the coach privately don’t want. With Saquon Barkley, it is a BB gun offense. Without him, it’s a cracked water pistol. It’s bad, it is bad.”

It has been reported that Giants owner John Mara was not directly involved in the Daniel Jones contract. But, Cowherd comparing the Giants to fallen video behemoth Blockbuster is a correct analogy, one that really can’t be argued with.

Although most of the Giants’ woes can be pinned on the tunnel vision of previous general manager Dave Gettleman, current GM Joe Schoen has quite a few misses of his own.

Schoen and his head coach, Brian Daboll, appear to have the full confidence of ownership but that will wane if the team does not begin winning with regularity starting this year.

New York Giants had ‘an exploratory meeting’ with Russell Wilson

The New York Giants are in the market for a quarterback this offseason and the first domino has apparently fallen.

On Friday morning, veteran quarterback Russell Wilson stopped over in East Rutherford for “an exploratory meeting” with the New York Giants before traveling to Pittsburgh to meet with the Steelers.

Giants general manager Joe Schoen is adamant that the team will add a quarterback to their room citing a lack of depth. Tyrod Taylor is an impending free agent and Daniel Jones, the presumed starter, is recovering from a neck injury and torn ACL.

When healthy, Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll say Jones will be the team’s starter. And although there is early optimism that DJ can return in time for training camp, there remains a possibility that he will miss the first few weeks of the regular season.

The 35-year-old Wilson is technically still a member of the Denver Broncos but the team has announced he will be released in the coming days. He’s been granted permission to meet with other teams.

Wilson also has some very limited crossover with Giants passing game coordinator/QB coach Shea Tierney.

In 15 games last season, Wilson completed 66.4 percent of his passes for 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. He also rushed for an additional 341 and three touchdowns (4.3 ypc).

Giants’ Brian Daboll one of best offensive minds in NFL

The New York Giants could be looking at a quarterback with the sixth overall selection in the 2024 NFL draft.

If North Carolina’s Drake Maye is still on the board when the Giants pick, they could reel him in. He would like that as his interactions with Big Blue thus far have all been positive.

“It was good in there. Meeting with coach (Brian) Daboll, big fan of him, offensive mind, one of the best,” Maye told reporters at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis this weekend.

“So, it’s just getting in there, getting to know those guys, Mr. Schoen. So, it was good in there.”

Maye also has a relationship with former Giants quarterback Eli Manning, whom he also gave glowing praise to.

“Eli, big fan. I think Eli would probably say he’s probably seen me too much, I’ve been following him around. It was always on Zooms,” Maye said. “I think the biggest thing is being a sponge, soaking it all in.

“I don’t have all the answers, and I don’t know it all just being up there with Eli, and like I said, David Moore, I’ve trained with him down there in Alabama; he was his backup at Ole Miss. So, just kind of the small world of connections and I’m just trying to soak it all up.”

Maye was asked if the future Pro Football Hall of Famer gave him any advice.

“Yeah, just be myself,” he said. “Don’t be somebody I’m not, and at the end of the day, don’t give the NFL too much spotlight or credit. You know, just going out there playing ball.”

Solid advice from one who knows.

J.J. McCarthy got a feel for running the Giants’ offense at Combine

Despite New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen insisting that Daniel Jones is the team’s starting quarterback when healthy, it seems everyone expects the Giants to still draft a quarterback this year.

Granted, they need a backup given Jones’ injury history, but do they really need to target someone like Caleb Williams? Or is someone like J.J. McCarthy a potentially better option?

Williams and other top-tier quarterbacks are likely to be gone by the Giants’ first pick, so they could consider trading up. Or they could trade down and wait for McCarthy — assuming he doesn’t rocket up draft boards.

There could be other options, but it seems that Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll took an interest in McCarthy at the 2024 NFL Combine during their formal meeting.

“I drew up a play that I can run in every situation — third down, fourth down, first and second, all that good stuff,” McCarthy said, via the New York Post. “And then the coaches were kind of changing my verbiage and making it their own. It was really nice to kind of get a feel of what that offense would be like and it was actually a lot more simple.”

McCarthy says all of the right things and presents himself in a professional yet approachable manner. He remembered different details about each meeting he had rather than giving vague complimentary answers about coaches.

He built a solid foundation at Michigan under Jim Harbaugh, and if someone can develop him from here, he has the potential to be a great quarterback.

But should the Giants target him? If they are going to draft a quarterback as so many have predicted, then McCarthy is as good an option as they’re going to get without trading up.
