Giants fans traveled well, took over State Farm Stadium in Week 2

The New York Giants’ comeback victory over the Arizona Cardinals on the road on Sunday was aided by a large gaggle of Giants fans who traveled out to the desert for the game.

“That played into it greatly,” wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins said after the game. “Giants fans travel like crazy. That was one of my better experiences just witnessing how deep they travel and I was just surprised that even pre-game to see how many Giants fans were out there. Salute to them and all the loyal fans out there, they definitely helped us.”

The fans were rewarded with a 31-28 win, the biggest comeback by the Giants since 1949.

What we learned from New York Giants’ 31-28 win over Arizona Cardinals

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Giants quarterback Daniel Jones was under siege again in the first half of Sunday’s game. He was 9-of-16 for just 62 yards, was sacked twice, and was charged with another interception that was not his fault.

Down, 20-0, at halftime head coach Brian Daboll challenged his team, asking them ‘are we gonna fight or what?’

They fought. Jones took the Giants on his back and led them on five straight scoring drives in the second half — four touchdowns and the winning field goal with 19 seconds left.

Jones finished the game completing 26 of 37 passes for 321 yards with two touchdowns for a passer rating of 103.5. He also rushed for 59 yards on nine carries and another score.

Asked what they did differently in the second half, Jones provided his typical low-key explanation.

“Just getting back to simple execution, and trusting it, seeing it, and ripping it. We had some opportunities to make plays in the first half. We didn’t do it and I knew that it’d be there. I just had to execute, give our guys a chance to make those plays and we did it and built off of it going forward,” he said.

5 biggest storylines for Week 2

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

The Giants got smoked by the Dallas Cowboys in their season opener last week, 40-0, and now will play two games in five days out west.

After the game in Arizona, the Giants will stay out on the West Coast and prepare for their Thursday night game against the 49ers in San Francisco.

A loss in Arizona could spell trouble as the Giants will certainly be underdogs against the 49ers on Thursday.

Since 1979, only six teams who began the season with an 0-3 record have qualified for the postseason.

Giants’ Isaiah Simmons ready to square off against ex-teammates

This Sunday, the New York Giants travel to Glendale, Arizona to face the Arizona Cardinals. It’s the first of two games in a five-day span as the Giants visit San Francisco on Thursday night before returning home to East Rutherford.

Their first stop pits linebacker Isaiah Simmons against the team he left less than a month ago.

“Not letting any external factors of like revenge or anything like that come in the way of the game,” Simmons told reporters this week. “(But I’m) not an emotionless person, so I’m sure there will be some emotions flowing through me but nothing that’s going to affect me and make me do anything crazy.”

The Cardinals selected Simmons in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft but traded him to the Giants for a seventh-round pick in August. Replacing him is safety K’Von Wallace, whom the Cardinals picked up off of waivers from the Philadelphia Eagles a week after trading Simmons.

“That’s little bro,” Cardinals safety Budda Baker said. “He’s not really a teammate of ours this week so it won’t be much of anything until after the game. Love ’em, but at the end of the day he’s a Giant and that’s who we are going against. There won’t be many words until after the game.”

Simmons will most definitely have heightened emotions playing against his former team, as do many players who have tense exits with previous teams, but he seems to have the right attitude for now.

The Cards may portray viewing him as an opponent, but they will likely have their own emotions to deal with.

New York Giants are down to 4-point road favorites vs. Cardinals

The New York Giants are currently 4-point favorites in their Week 2 matchup this coming Sunday afternoon against the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Field in Glendale.

That is down from 4.5 points earlier in the week. The line got as high as 5.5 points on some wagering platforms.

The money line is currently Giants -155, and Cardinals +125. It was Giants -210, and Cardinals +170 earlier this week.

The over/under opened at 38.5 points, per BetMGM. It is now 39.5 points.

Oddsmakers weren’t deterred by the Giants’ no-show on Sunday night against the Dallas Cowboys, an unforgiving 40-0 drubbing that — believe it or not — wasn’t as close as the scoreboard indicated.

The Cardinals lost a tough game against the Commanders in Washington on Sunday, 20-16, and actually led after three quarters.

The Cardinals have won five of the last six meetings with Big Blue. The most recent game in Arizona was a 23-0 Cardinals victory in 2017.

Giants’ Azeez Ojulari doubtful, Andrew Thomas questionable in Week 2

The New York Giants begin their West Coast road trip this Sunday when they take on the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stadium in Glendale before a quick turnaround and a game against the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday night.

The team’s daily injury report was lengthy this week and included the additions of left tackle Andrew Thomas (hamstring) and linebacker Azeez Ojulari (hamstring).

Both of those players practiced on Friday on at least a limited basis, as did the remainder of the team. No one sat out but game statuses were still very much up in the air.

“Everybody’s practicing, and we’ll reevaluate after practice,” Daboll told reporters. “Those are discussions we have after practice today.”

Following practice, it became quickly apparent who stood the best chance at playing in Week 2 and who was likely to sit out.

Full injury reports for both the Giants and Cardinals can be found below:

No added sense of urgency in Week 2

The New York Giants got trounced, 40-0, by the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1 on Sunday Night Football. For the past few days, the fans and the media have been unpacking the loss and likely making too much of it.

The Giants themselves have unpacked the loss long ago and have moved on. That’s what star running back Saquon Barkley reiterated to reporters on Thursday.

“To be completely honest, the only time we really even reflect on that is when we’ve got to talk to you guys,” Barkley said. “I know you guys are doing your job and asking the right questions, but we’re so far gone on that. Like I said, you can’t let what happened in Week 1 affect you in Week 2. We can learn from it, but we’ve got to move on.”

The Giants are preparing for a two-week road trip, first to Arizona on Sunday and then to San Francisco on Thursday. Barkley was asked if there is a ‘heightened sense of urgency’ surrounding Sunday’s game.

“No. To be completely honest, no,” he said. “And I think that’s important. You can’t act like the sky is falling. That’s for everyone else to do that. But we’ve got to stay solid, the core’s got to stay solid within this locker room within this building. I think we did that, and like I said, hopefully, on Sunday we can go out there and show you guys.”

If the Giants fall to 0-2 to start this season, the odds of them having a winning season drops to just 14 percent and the odds of securing a postseason berth is even lower — 9.6 percent.

So, yes, there should be a heightened sense of urgency.

4 reasons for optimism in Week 2

Billy Hardiman-USA TODAY Sports

Certainly, anyone who watched the Giants’ Week 1 performance should be concerned about New York’s offensive line moving forward.

The Giants also did not show much on the defensive line, either. At least not in terms of pass rush.

Additionally, injuries to Andrew Thomas and Azeez Ojulari should be a concern for both sides of the trenches moving forward.

However, the Cardinals simply do not stack up to the threat the Cowboys present on either side of the ball in the trenches. Ideally, this will be a ‘get right’ game for the Giants and the opportunity is there to win the battle of the trenches.

NFL experts make Week 2 picks

The New York Giants (0-1) will visit the Arizona Cardinals (0-1) at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona on Sunday afternoon.

Opening the week, the Giants were listed as 4.5-point road favorites and that line has only improved for them in recent days. They are now -5.5 as of this writing.

Let’s take a look at who some of the experts and insiders around the league are taking in the Week 2 matchup:

Expert Pick Score (if applicable)
Dan Graziano (ESPN) Giants N/A
Matt Bowen (ESPN) Giants N/A
Seth Wickersham (ESPN) Giants N/A
Pete Prisco (CBS) Giants 23-21
John Breech (CBS) Giants 20-13
Jared Dubin (CBS) Giants N/A
Nate Davis (USA TODAY) Giants 27-20
Lorenzo Reyes (USA TODAY) Giants 21-10
Bill Bender (Sporting News) Giants  24-17
Vinnie Iyer (Sporting News) Giants  23-17

Given how poorly the Giants played to open the season, it’s shocking to see them favored so heavily against Arizona. Even with the Cardinals in the midst of a rebuild, you’d think there would be some stragglers.

Most do view it as a one-score game but they also believe the Giants will come out on top.

In total, 99 percent of all “experts” are selecting the Giants to win on Sunday, according to NFL Pickwatch. That’s even more than the fans, who have Big Blue winning at an 85 percent clip.
