Foldable Smartphones Shipments Break Records in Q3 2023, Samsung Leads Market Share: Report

Foldable smartphones were more popular in the third quarter of 2023 than was anticipated earlier, according to a new report. The shipments of foldable smartphones and their panels surged in the quarter due to two major reasons, as per the numbers revealed in the study – firstly, the launch of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 in July this year and secondly, the sheer rise in the number of foldable smartphones launched from different brands, especially in China.

According to the Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) report, the shipments of foldable smartphones in Q3 2023 rose 215 percent Quarter-on-Quarter and 16 percent Year-on-Year to 7 million units. This is 1 percent above the outlook and surpasses the earlier record of 6.1 million units in Q3 2022 by 16 percent. South Korean OEM Samsung led market share in the quarter with 76 percent, with leading demands in European markets, as per the report.

Huawei claimed the second spot in the market share at 9 percent. The company launched the Huawei Mate X3 in March this year with a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC and a 4,800Ah battery with 66W wired and 50W wireless charging support. The book-style foldable carries a 7.85-inch (2,224×2,496 pixels) OLED inner display and a 6.4-inch OLED (1,080×2,504 pixels) cover panel.

Honor grabbed onto the third spot with an 8 percent market share with its Magic V2 model. This is another book-style foldable smartphone launched in China. It is backed by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC and a 5,000mAh battery with 66W Honor SuperCharge support. This phone features a 7.92-inch interior display with a resolution of 2,344 x 2,156 pixels, and a 6.43-inch outer screen with a resolution of 2,376 x 1,060 pixels.

The DSCC report added that in Q4 2023, foldable smartphone shipments are expected to fall 35 percent QoQ and rise 47 percent YoY to 3.6 million. Samsung’s brand share is also expected to take a tumble to land at 42 percent, according to the report.

DSCC CEO Ross Young noted that the entry of new players in the foldable smartphones market with Google Pixel Fold, OnePlus Open, Tecno Phantom V Flip and Tecno Phantom V Fold has helped this rise in shipments.

Apple Could Launch a 15.5-Inch MacBook Air in Early April, Suggests Another Report

Apple is reportedly working on a version of the MacBook Air with a 15.5-inch display. There hasn’t been a word from the Cupertino company regarding the existence of the MacBook Air model. However, Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) believes that the panel production for the 15.5-inch MacBook Air has started in February. Furthermore, Young expects an early April launch for this model. There have been rumours suggesting the 15.5-inch MacBook Air could come with two CPU options — an M2 or M2 Pro chipset.

According to a 9to5Mac report, there is a possibility that Apple might launch the MacBook Air with a 15.5-inch display in April this year. Young had previously suggested that panel production for the laptop will start in the first quarter of 2023. At the time, it was expected to make its debut sometime in spring 2023.

Furthermore, Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that the 15.5-inch MacBook Air could come with two CPU options. The M2 chipset-powered version is said to support 35W charging, whereas the M2 Pro chipset-powered model could offer 67W charging support. Kuo suggests that this upcoming laptop may not bear the MacBook Air moniker.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reportedly also believes that Apple is working on a 15-inch version of the MacBook Air, which may release as early as next spring. This model is expected to be an updated version of the 13.6-inch MacBook Air, which was unveiled at WWDC 2022.

This model gets a 13.6-inch Liquid Retina Display with a notch for the 1080p web camera. It is powered by an M2 chipset, which features a 10-core GPU. This laptop offers up to 2TB of SSD storage and can be configured with up to 24GB of unified memory. It is claimed to have a battery life of up to 18 hours and support 67W wired charging.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Series Colour Options Tipped, May Offer Limited Choices

Samsung Galaxy S23 series is believed to be the next flagship lineup from the South Korean tech giant. This lineup is expected to include the standard Galaxy S23, Galaxy S22+, and Galaxy S23 Ultra. These smartphones could be unveiled sometime early next year. Rumours are already circulating regarding various aspects of the Galaxy S23 series. Now, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), Ross Young, has revealed that the upcoming series may get only a limited number of colour options.

Young tweeted on Thursday suggesting that all three handsets of the Galaxy S23 series will only get beige, black, green, and light pink colours. Samsung has said to have significantly reduced the number of colour options that will be offered with its next flagship series.

In contrast, the Galaxy S22 lineup is available in a wide range of colours. Depending on the model, you can get your hands on a Galaxy S22 series smartphone in Bora Purple, Phantom White, Phantom Black, Pink Gold, Sky Blue, Graphite, Red, or more colours.

There have been several other rumours surrounding the Galaxy S23 series in recent times. A recent report claims that the Galaxy S23+ could pack a 4,700mAh battery and the Galaxy S23 Ultra may be backed by a 5,000mAh battery. This report further suggests that the vanilla Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23+ may get a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera similar to their predecessor the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+.

The Galaxy S23 lineup has also been tipped to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. Reportedly, this chipset comes with an improved neural processing unit (NPU), image signal processor (ISP), and GPU.

Renders of the Galaxy S23 Ultra also leaked recently, indicating that Samsung might not drastically alter its design in comparison to the Galaxy S22 Ultra. This handset is said to have a 6.8-inch display.
