Apple Watch X to Feature New Motherboard Design That Could Make it Thinner: Report

Apple is said to be working on its next generation of smartwatches, dubbed the Apple Watch X. A follow-up to the current Apple Watch Series 9, the company’s next wearable will feature an overhauled design, reportedly changing the way users wear the smartwatch. Now, a new rumour has hinted at further design changes that could result in the Apple Watch X being thinner than its predecessors.

The latest information comes from Digitimes (via 9to5Mac), which cites a supply chain rumour that suggests the Apply Watch X is set to utilise a resin coated copper (RCC) motherboard design. A switch to thinner RCC logic board could likely leave more room for other components or a bigger battery within the watch, the report said.

While multiple reports have placed the Apple Watch X under development at the Cupertino, California-based company, there is no word on a launch timeline. Earlier reports had tipped a 2023 release, but Apple ended up introducing the Apple Watch Series 9 last year, alongside the company’s iPhone 15 lineup.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, however, had reported in August last year that the Apple Watch X would likely be introduced in 2024 or 2025. According to him, the Apple Watch X is intended to mark the 10-year anniversary for Apple Watches, first introduced in 2015. The next-generation smartwatch from Apple is said to represent a major overhaul and could feature a thinner watch case and a new magnetic band that will change how people wear the smartwatch.

Additionally, the Apple Watch X could also feature a microLED display, an update over the current OLED screens found on Apple Watch models. It might also get new sensors that monitor the wearer’s blood pressure.

More recently, a report earlier this month claimed that the next Apple Watch lineup could feature upgraded displays that improve battery efficiency of the wearable. The report said that the Apple Watch Series 10 (or Apple Watch X) could sport a low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) OLED display, along with thin-film transistor (TFT) technology, delivering better battery life.

Future models of the Apple Watch have also been tipped to get new features like drowning alerts. Apple’s smartwatches have been known to be useful and lifesaving in emergency situations, be it sending notifications for irregular heart activity or alerts for falls and crashes. A recent patent application filed by the company detailed a system for sending alerts to nearby users if an Apple Watch wearer begins to drown in a water body.

Apple is working on redesigned connector system for its upcoming Apple Watch model, according to details shared by a tipster. The Cupertino company’s purported next-generation smartwatch is expected to feature watch straps that are connected using a different mechanism that would render previous Apple watch bands incompatible with the upcoming model. Until now, Apple Watch bands were compatible across several generations — as long as the same size is used — which means that users could continue using their watch bands even after they upgrade to a newer Apple Watch model.

X (formerly Twitter) user Kosutami (@KosutamiSan) claims in a recent post that the connectors of the next-generation Apple Watch have been “completely redesigned” — the tipster does not specify what mechanism will be used to connect the bands to the watch but states that the reason why Apple is opting for the new system is that the current connector “takes a lot of space.”

It is worth noting that this is not the first time that company’s purported plans to redesign the Apple Watch band connectors have come to light. Earlier this year, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman stated that the “Apple Watch X” would be equipped with a magnetic band attachment system instead of the existing locking mechanism.

Apple’s current-generation Apple Watch Series 9, Watch Ultra 2, and Watch SE (2022) are equipped with a press-to-release locking mechanism that holds the watch bands firmly in place. The same mechanism has been used by the company for several generations now, allowing users to use the same bands on their next Apple Watch. iPhone 16 Pro Models With Larger Screens, Apple Watch X With New Health Features Coming in 2024: Mark Gurman

iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will get slightly larger displays next year, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman states in the latest edition of his Power On newsletter. The company recently unveiled its iPhone 15 series of smartphones with the standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus receiving the Dynamic Island and a 48-megapixel camera that made their debut on the company’s 2022 Pro models. Gurman says that the iPhone maker will also introduce a new iPad Pro with an OLED display, M3-powered Mac models, as well as an Apple Watch ‘Series X’ upgrade with a new design and health features.

Expected to arrive roughly around a year from now, the iPhone 16 series of smartphones may include the purported successors to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Gurman states that these Pro models will be equipped with bigger screens than the handsets that were just launched with a new titanium chassis. Apple is reportedly seeing “robust demand” for its iPhone 15 Pro Max model with shipments delayed to November in some regions, including the US.

The iPhone 16 lineup aren’t the only devices from the company expected to feature upgraded displays. Apple will also upgrade its 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro model with an OLED display, according to Gurman. It was previously reported that the next iPad Pro model is also expected to debut with new accessories including an improved Magic Keyboard.

While Apple introduced its first 3nm chip — the A17 Pro — on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, the company’s transition to 3nm chips for its Mac computers is expected to take place beyond 2023, according to Gurman, who adds that the purported M3 chip is — expected to succeed the 5nm M2 chip from Apple — will arrive on new MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and Mac models.  

The iPhone maker announced earlier this year that it plans to sell its first wearable spatial computer — the Apple Vision Pro — in early 2024. At $3,499 (roughly Rs. 2.9 lakh), the company isn’t expected to ship as many units of the product as its more affordable devices. However, Gurman predicts that the device will help draw more customers for Apple’s other products, as it will be present at retail stores next year.

Apple’s Next Watch Will Be Called Apple Watch X, Could Launch Later This Year: Report

Apple unveiled the Apple Watch Series 8 last year in September at its Far Out event along with iPhone 14 series. Now the company is reportedly working on the next Apple Watch series, believed to be dubbed as the Apple Watch X. This suggests that the tech giant could skip the Apple Watch 9 this year just the way it managed to skip the entire iPhone 9 series and brought iPhone X. The original Apple Watch was launched in 2014.

According to a report by French website iPhoneSoft, Apple is planning to skip the Apple Watch Series 9, just the way it brought the iPhone X instead of an iPhone 9 model in 2017. The branding X referred to iPhone’s 10th anniversary. The tech giant is likely to name its next generation of smartwatches as Apple Watch X. The portal has cited a source from Apple supplier Luxshare as saying that the next watch from the Cupertino, California-based company will not be called Apple Watch 9, and will bear the Apple Watch X moniker instead.

The report also suggested that Apple’s next operating system for its Apple Watch series will be the watchOS 10. It added that Apple’s next-generation watch is likely to be launched later this year. The original Apple Watch was unveiled in September 2014 at a press event, along with the iPhone 6.

In addition to these, the report has also tipped some of the features of the purported Apple Watch. The next Apple Watch series could come with a flatter design, new case trails, new bracelets, as well as features like a blood glucose sensor. There are also rumours about a blood alcohol sensor to be included. Currently, Apple Watch comes with heart monitoring, fall detection emergency and SoS calling, period tracker, and more.

Meanwhile, Apple is reported to be working on incorporating microLED displays in its future wearables. The first Apple Watch to get a microLED display is tipped to be the next Apple Watch Ultra, which is speculated to go official in 2024. Apple is likely to bring the upgraded display technology to its entire product line, including iPhone, iPad, and Mac units.
