iPhone 15 Brings New Battery Settings Option to Limit Charging Beyond 80 Percent: Report

iPhone 15 series went official last week with significant upgrades in design as well as specifications. The lightning port that Apple has kept in its iPhone models since the iPhone 5 was replaced by a USB Type-C port this year. Besides this, the Cupertino-based company is reportedly using new battery settings for the latest lineup. With this feature, iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max users will be able to limit the battery charge percentage to maximise battery lifespan. This setting could maximise battery health by lowering the maximum battery charge level to 80 percent rather than reaching 100 percent. Additionally, Apple is providing more details on battery health for the user.

The Verge’s Allison Johnson during a Q&A session states that all of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models running on iOS 17 feature a new option in the Battery Health & Charging menu that is designed to stop the handset from ever charging beyond 80 percent when enabled. This menu is said to include three options — Optimised Battery Charging, 80 percent limit, and none. It can be accessed by heading to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging .

The new 80 percent limit option will stop your iPhone 15 models from charging when it reaches 80 percent of full capacity. The new feature was previously discovered in iOS 17 beta code.

Additionally, Apple is allowing users to check their device’s battery cycle count for the first time. As pointed out by tipster Revegnus (@Tech_Reve), iPhone 15 users can obtain details such as the battery manufacture date, initial usage time, battery cycle count and more now by heading to Settings > General > About in their handset.

Charging a battery up to 80 percent is recommended to protect the battery from overheating and get prolonged battery health as the last 20 percent is said to take more energy and produce more heat. This practice is expected to preserve battery health over time. It is almost identical to the Optimised Charging setting Apple already offers on old iPhone models that limit charging of battery overnight. Samsung and OnePlus also offer similar features with their handsets.

Apple to Launch Magic Mouse, Trackpad, Keyboard With USB Type-C Ports in October: Mark Gurman

Apple iPhone 15 series was launched recently at the Wonderlust launch event. The lineup includes a base iPhone 15, an iPhone 15 Plus, an iPhone 15 Pro and an iPhone 15 Pro Max. The handsets come with USB Type-C port connectivity support. All Apple products carried a lightning connector before the launch of this series. In compliance with new EU regulations, Apple ditched the exclusive ports in favour of the standard USB Type-C ports. Now, Mark Gurman suggests that the company will launch the Apple Magic accessories with USB Type-C connectivity.

In his Bloomberg newsletter, Gurman writes that Apple will launch accessories with USB Type-C ports in October, alongside the expected iMac products. The new launches will include Magic Mouse, Magic Trackpad, and Magic Keyboard, according to the newsletter. He added that the company will also reintroduce the MagSafe Battery Pack and MagSafe Duo Charger with the USB Type-C ports.

Gurman adds that the next AirPods Max, with the launch timeline still unknown, will also be released with USB Type-C charging port. To keep up with EU guidelines and also have parity among its products, it is likely that Apple will revamp all its product lineups to launch with USB Type-C charging ports.

Apple Watch Series X is expected to launch in either 2024 or 2025, according to the newsletter. The company is also said to be working on an AI-powered health coaching service. In the similar timeline, Gurman suggests that Apple will introduce the Vision Pro AR/VR headset with further upgraded features.

Both 11 and 13-inch models of the iPad Pro are expected to get revamps for the first time in five years including OLED displays, according to Gurman. The Magic Keyboard accompanying the tablets are also expected to come with a metal-top case.

According to Gurman’s latest newsletter, the next iPhone Pro models are likely to get bigger displays than their predecessors. The MacBook Airs, MacBook Pros and other Mac devices are also tipped to receive the M3 chips.

iPhone 15 Pro Max Faces Production Challenges Amid ‘Robust Demand’ and Shipping Delays: Ming-Chi Kuo

iPhone 15 Pro Max — Apple’s top-of-the-line model launched at its ‘Wonderlust’ event last week — is seeing robust demand after preorders for the handset opened on September 15, according to TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. This year, the Pro Max model features a more advanced telephoto camera with improved optical zoom support. However, the analyst states that iPhone 15 Pro Max production challenges are “more pronounced” compared to other models, even as the deliveries for the top-of-the-line model have been delayed to November in some regions.

Kuo states in a Medium post that the demand for the new iPhone 15 Pro Max is “robust” and higher than the iPhone 14 Pro Max that was launched by the company last year. Unlike its larger sibling, the iPhone 15 Pro model demand is weaker than its predecessor and the analyst suggests that this is because more customers are interested in the iPhone 15 Pro Max this year.

Unlike the iPhone 15 Pro, the Cupertino company’s regular iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models are seeing demand that is “roughly on par” with the handsets launched by Apple last year, according to Kuo. This year, Apple introduced some notable changes to the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models, including the company’s Dynamic Island and a 48-megapixel primary camera that arrived with the iPhone 14 Pro models last year.

While the demand for Apple’s iPhone models typically causes some delay in deliveries every year, the analyst points out that the iPhone 15 Pro Max is facing lengthy delays this year. In some regions, including the US, the top-of-the-line model is expected to be delivered to some customers in November.

Kuo claims that the iPhone 15 Pro Max — which entered mass production later than the company’s other smartphones — is facing “more pronounced” production challenges compared to other models. Apple unveiled the iPhone 15 series of smartphones at its ‘Wonderlust’ launch event on September 12, and preorders for all four models began three days later. The handsets will go on sale in India and in global markets on September 22.

iPhone 15 Pro Max Delivery Shifted to November for Select Countries: Here’s Why

Buyers of Apple‘s new iPhone 15 Pro Max in some countries including China, Japan and the United States may have to wait until November to get the smartphone, an early sign of strong demand for the company as it started taking pre-orders on Friday.

The indications are likely to ease some worries about demand for Apple’s flagship device after a slump in the global smartphone market sapped iPhone sales in the June quarter.

The four-to-five week wait period for the Pro Max in China could also allay fears of a financial hit in Apple’s third-largest market amid growing competition from Huawei and Beijing’s widening curbs on iPhone use by government staff.

The wait is slightly shorter for iPhone 15 Pro in China at two to three weeks, according to Apple website. It said it could deliver iPhone 15 on September 22, the day the phone goes on sale in stores.

In top market United States, buyers will have to wait for six to seven weeks before getting the Pro Max, the most expensive model in the iPhone 15 model line-up that was launched last week. The wait is five to six weeks for the model in Japan.

But like China, the wait is shorter for the Pro model, with a period of just two to three weeks for the 128GB version in the US and Japan.

Some analysts said the long wait period also reflected the lower initial supply of Pro Max as Apple faced hurdles in securing supplies of the displays used in the model with thinner bezels than previous iPhones.

Those issues have, however, been resolved, said Nabila Popal, research director for worldwide tracker group, at IDC.

“We expect Apple to get into full gear by the holiday season with shipments highly skewing towards the Pro Max model, which should give Apple a nice bump in its average-selling price.”

Strong China orders

The high-end iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models were sold out on the Apple store on Alibaba’s Tmall marketplace within a minute of going on sale, Chinese local media reports said.

On JD.com, one of Apple’s biggest sale channels in China, more than 3.4 million reservations were placed in total for the four iPhone 15 models in the run-up to the e-commerce platform opening orders on Friday evening.

“Since the decline of Huawei, the iPhone has been able to attract a massive number of consumers in the more than $600 (nearly Rs. 50,000) segment,” said Ivan Lam, senior analyst at Counterpoint.

“The new iPhone 15 series, especially the Pro series, will be a good choice for the installed base who are using iPhone 11/12 and looking for an update replacement,” Lam said, while adding that Huawei’s Mate 60 series will be a challenge to the iPhone.

Huawei launched the smartphone with an advanced chip late last month and it could mark a comeback for the Chinese tech firm, which was once the world’s biggest smartphone maker before its business was decimated by US export controls, analysts said.

State media reported this week that better-than-expected sales had prompted Huawei to raise its second-half shipment target for its Mate 60 series by 20 percent and its forecast for overall new smartphone shipments in 2023 to at least 40 million units.

Huawei’s Mate 60 launch was unusual in that Huawei did not carry out any pre-marketing or organise a glitzy event. The company is set to hold an event on September 25, where it is expected to discuss its new smartphone.

Apple to Update Software on iPhone 12s in France to Settle Radiation Dispute

Apple pledged on Friday to update software on iPhone 12s in France to settle a dispute over radiation levels, but concerns in other European countries signalled it may have to take similar action elsewhere.

France this week suspended sales of iPhone 12 handsets after tests which it said found breaches of radiation exposure limits.

Apple contested the findings, saying the iPhone 12 was certified by multiple international bodies as compliant with global standards, but said on Friday it would issue a software update to accommodate the testing methods used in France.

Researchers have conducted a vast number of studies over the last two decades to assess the health risks of mobile phones. According to the World Health Organisation, no adverse health effects have been established as being caused by them.

But the radiation warning in France, based on results of tests that differ from those carried out in other countries, has prompted concerns across Europe.

Belgium’s state secretary for digitalisation said he had asked Apple to upgrade the iPhone 12 software across EU countries, even though he said that based on the Belgian regulator’s own preliminary review the handset presents no danger to users.

Germany said it was in touch with French authorities to find a European Union-wide solution, while Italy was set to ask Apple to upgrade the software on iPhone 12s there, according to a government source in Rome.

However, any request to Apple or separate decisions by Italian authorities will only come after the end of the French investigation, a second Italian government source said.

The Dutch Authority for Digital Infrastructure said it was also conducting its own investigation, due in two weeks, and was in contact with Apple as well as German and French authorities. The agency said it had received calls from concerned consumers.

The French government welcomed Apple’s software update, saying it would be swiftly tested and should allow for sales of the relatively old iPhone 12 model, launched in 2020, to resume.

“We will issue a software update for users in France to accommodate the protocol used by French regulators. We look forward to iPhone 12 continuing to be available in France,” Apple said in a statement.

“This is related to a specific testing protocol used by French regulators and not a safety concern,” it said.

Apple routinely provides software updates for its phones and computers, mostly to fix a security issue. They can be focused on a particular model or a region, and sometimes Apple issues such updates several times in a month.

Limb tests

France’s Agence Nationale des Frequences (ANFR) said on Tuesday the iPhone 12’s Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) — a measure of the rate of radiofrequency energy absorbed by the body from a piece of equipment — was higher than legally allowed, which prompted the sale suspension.

A change in French regulations in 2020 allowed for testing SAR for limbs — holding a phone in hand — as well as for the head and body, used elsewhere. In the French limb SAR tests, which the iPhone 12 failed, it is measured at a distance of 0 mm compared with a distance of 5mm for body tests.

The Belgian minister for digitalisation, Mathieu Michel, said in a statement on Friday that while a review of the phone by the country’s IBPT regulator was still underway, the first results were “reassuring” and there was no need for a recall of the phone in Belgium.

Even so, he said he had contacted Apple and asked it to “review its software updates in an identical manner within the whole of Europe.”

Denmark too moved to reassure owners of the phone, saying its Safety Authority would not take action following France’s findings and that it was not concerned about radiation levels from using the iPhone 12.

“Based on the available information, the Danish Health Authority’s assessment is that you can continue to use your iPhone 12 without concern,” it said in an emailed statement.

Industry experts said there were no safety risks as regulatory limits, based on the risk of burns or heatstroke from the phone’s radiation, were set well below levels where scientists have found evidence of harm.

“Ultimately I suspect the whole incident will be quickly forgotten,” said Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, highlighting that the iPhone 12 is an old model.

Apple launched the iPhone 15 on Tuesday and the iPhone 12 is not available to buy from Apple directly. It can, however, be bought from third parties that have inventory or trade old phones.

A bigger issue would have been a potential recall, which France had threatened if Apple had refused to do a software update.

Apple’s revenues totalled about $95 billion (nearly Rs. 7,89,600 crore) in Europe last year, making the region its second biggest behind the Americas. Some estimates say it sold more than 50 million iPhones last year in Europe.

The US company does not break out its sales by country or model.

iPhone 15 Series Battery Capacities, Wattage Reportedly Revealed via Regulatory Database: Details

iPhone 15 series’ battery capacities and wattage details have reportedly been revealed thanks to a regulatory database. Apple does not publish details of the batteries in its smartphones, aside from battery backup — in hours. However, a new report reveals that the iPhone 15 Pro models are equipped with slightly larger batteries than last year’s models. It is worth noting that Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are equipped with a new 3nm A17 Pro chip, which is expected to offer better efficiency (and performance) compared to last year’s Pro models.

A MySmartPrice report states that the details of the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max batteries have been listed on a Chinese regulatory database. The publication did not reveal the name of the database, but includes details of both the capacity and wattage of all four models in the iPhone 15 series.

According to the report, the iPhone 15 is equipped with a 3,349mAh battery with a wattage of 12.981Wh. The regular iPhone 14 that was launched last year featured a 3,279mAh battery. The iPhone 15 Plus is equipped with a 4,383mAh battery with a wattage of 16.950Wh, slightly higher than the iPhone 14 Plus, which had a battery capacity of 4,235mAh.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 15 Pro reportedly packs a 3,274mAh battery with a wattage of 12.70Wh, slightly higher than the iPhone 14 Pro, which has a 3,200mAh unit. On the other hand, the top-of-the-line iPhone 15 Pro Max features a 4,422mAh battery with a wattage of 17.109Wh — this is slightly higher than its predecessor, the iPhone 14 Pro Max, which was equipped with a 4,323mAh battery.

Apple does not reveal the battery capacities of its smartphones, unlike other smartphone OEMs. Instead, it reveals the typical battery life offered by the smartphone. According to the company, the iPhone 15 Pro Max will offer the best battery life in the lineup — offering up to 29 hours of video playback. The iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 offer 25 hours, 23 hours, and 20 hours of battery life, respectively.

A recent report also revealed another specification that Apple typically keeps under wraps — the amount of RAM on its smartphones. Apple previously upgraded the available RAM on its smartphone from 4GB to 6GB when it launched the iPhone 13 Pro, and the company’s iPhone 15 Pro models are the first handsets to feature 8GB of RAM while the non-Pro models are equipped with 6GB of RAM, according to a report

iPhone 15, iPhone 14 Emergency SOS via Satellite Feature Expanding to Two New Countries

Apple introduced a safety feature called Emergency SOS via satellite last year with the iPhone 14 series. This functionality is designed to let users get in touch with emergency services when they do not have a cellular network or Wi-Fi connectivity. As planned, Apple is making Emergency SOS via satellite available in more countries later this month. The latest iPhone 15 series also gets this feature and it is free for the first two years with the activation of a handset. Apple’s Emergency SOS via satellite was only available in the US and Canada at the time of launch.

During the launch of the iPhone 15 series this week, Apple announced that it is expanding the Emergency SOS via satellite feature to Spain and Switzerland. With this development, iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 users in these regions will be able to contact emergency services and share their location with friends and family in places with no cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity. The functionality will be available by the end of this month.

Satellite features are included for free for two years with the activation of an iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 15, or iPhone 15 Pro.

The Emergency SOS via satellite feature debuted with the launch of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro last year. Initially, it was limited to the US and Canada and Apple expanded its availability to more countries at various points through the last few months. At present, the Emergency SOS via satellite is currently available in 14 countries including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, the UK, and the US. The feature requires the iOS 16.1 or later update to function in these countries.

The Emergency SOS via satellite service can be used during natural disasters and wilderness adventures. It will automatically appear when a user tries to call emergency services and a short questionnaire will be shown to help the user answer vital questions. Apple has also shared a video on YouTube to promote the impact of this safety feature. The four-minute video portrays iPhone 14 users who were saved from danger using Emergency SOS via satellite.

Meanwhile, Apple is all set to roll out another interesting feature called Roadside Assistance via satellite. It is designed to help iPhone users who are locked out of their vehicle or have car troubles like running out of fuel, in areas where cellular network coverage or Wi-Fi network are unavailable. This functionality will be exclusive to the US.

Apple Used India’s NavIC GPS System in iPhone 15 Models: MoS IT

Apple has incorporated India’s Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) GPS system in its iPhone 15 models, Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar said on Thursday. NavIC, which is powered by ISRO satellites, will be available along with other GPS systems of Galeilio and Glosnas in iPhone 15.

On September 12, Apple unveiled iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models, and they will be available for purchase later this month.

“There are two big milestones that emerge from the Apple announcement of their newest Iphone 15. One is certainly a very satisfying announcement which is that on the very day a customer in New York, Tokyo or London gets in their hand on an iPhone 15, an Indian customer will also get the iPhone on the same day,” Chandrasekhar said.

The Minister of State (MoS) for Electronics and Information Technology also said that for the first time ever, iPhone 15 incorporates in its system design the availability of NavIC GPS system, along with other GPS of Galeilio and Glosnas.

“So for the first time ever, a global product like iPhone will have incorporated technology that is designed, delivered and powered by the Indian constellation of NavIC which is something that ISRO has built, designed and launched.

“It… shows the coming of age of Indian technology,” he said.

When asked if the government plans to introduce NavIC in other areas as well like automobiles, he replied in the affirmative.

“Yes! It is natural that NavIC tracker should be made mandatory for all automobiles. The next step will be that all automobiles will also use NavIC trackers. Like all iPhones have got NavIC, all automobiles will be powered by NavIC,” he said.

iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max Equipped With 8GB of RAM Alongside A17 Pro Chip: Report

iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are equipped with more RAM than their predecessors, according to a report. The Cupertino company’s iPhone 15 series of smartphones — comprising the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, as well as the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max — feature different amounts of memory and the Pro models are equipped with Apple’s next-generation A17 Pro chip. The iPhone maker does not typically disclose the amount of RAM available in its smartphones or tablets.

MacRumors and X (formerly Twitter) user @aaronp613 spotted files in the release candidate for Xcode 15 — Apple’s integrated development environment (IDE) — that indicate the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are equipped with 8GB of RAM. Meanwhile, the files reveal that the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models feature 6GB of RAM.

This means that the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are equipped with an additional 2GB of memory compared to their predecessors. It is also the first time that the company has upgraded the amount of RAM on its smartphones since the iPhone 13 Pro, which was the firm’s first handset with 6GB of RAM. Last year, all models in the iPhone 14 series of smartphones were equipped with the same amount of memory, and this year’s iPhone 15 and iPhone Plus also have 6GB of RAM.

As previously mentioned, Apple doesn’t officially reveal the amount of RAM that its smartphones are equipped with. However, we can expect these details to be revealed in the coming weeks, thanks to teardown videos that will give us a look at the components Apple used to build these handsets.

While 8GB of RAM is a far cry from the vast amount of memory available on Android smartphones — the OnePlus Ace 2 Pro and Realme GT 5 are both equipped with a whopping 24GB of RAM — it is worth noting that Android and iOS handle memory in different ways.

The additional RAM on the iPhone 15 Pro models is expected to bring an increase in performance alongside the powerful new 3nm A17 Pro chip on the handsets. We do not know whether the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are equipped with a different type of RAM compared to the regular iPhone 15 models, but these details should also be revealed in teardown videos in the coming days.

China Flags Security Problems With New iPhone 15 Models, Restricts Use in Government Departments

China flagged security problems with iPhones while saying it isn’t barring purchases, the government’s first comments on the topic after news reports that authorities are moving to restrict the use of Apple products in sensitive departments and state-owned companies.

“We noticed that there have been many media reports about security incidents concerning Apple phones,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said Wednesday at a regular press briefing in Beijing, without elaborating.

China plans to expand a ban on the use of iPhones to a plethora of state-backed companies and agencies, Bloomberg News has reported, a sign of growing challenges for Apple in its biggest foreign market and global production base. Several agencies have begun instructing staff not to bring their iPhones to work.

“China has not issued laws and regulations to ban the purchase of Apple or foreign brands’ phones,” Mao said, adding that the government attaches “great importance” to security and that all companies operating in China need to abide by its laws and regulations.

Mao’s comments about security incidents were slightly different in the official English translation of the news briefing. That translation, delivered simultaneously onsite by the ministry, omitted the reference to media “reports.” Foreign affairs ministry briefings are typically rigorously controlled and spokespeople’s responses are usually scripted ahead of time.

The press conference came just hours after Apple unveiled its latest model of the marquee device, the iPhone 15. The company unveiled four new models, keeping pace with the past few generations: the iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max

If Beijing goes ahead with an iPhone ban, the unprecedented blockade will be the culmination of a yearslong effort to root out foreign technology used in sensitive environments, coinciding with Beijing’s effort to reduce its reliance on American software and circuitry.

It threatens to erode Apple’s position in a market that yields about a fifth of its revenue, and from where it makes the majority of the world’s iPhones through sprawling factories that employ millions of Chinese.
