watchOS 10 Could Feature Redesigned Home Screen Similar to iOS

Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) is scheduled to begin on June 5. The Cupertino giant is expected to preview the next generation of watchOS alongside iOS 17, iPadOS 17, macOS 14 and tvOS 17 during the five-day-long affair. The watchOS 10 updated is expected to be in the spotlight this time and Apple could bring a major design upgrade to the wearable operating system. As per a new leak, watchOS 10 will come with a redesigned home screen layout inspired by iOS and a bunch of other features.

According to a Twitter user who goes by the name @analyst941, Apple will introduce a design overhaul with watchOS 10. It is said to come with a redesigned home screen with an icon layout similar to iOS. This would allow users to create folders and use, move, and act more easily. The tipster has also posted renders suggesting the redesigned home screen layout. It could feature a grid of three apps in a row.

Currently, watchOS offers Grid and List view for the homescreen. The tipster says it is unsure if Apple is replacing the grid as default or if it’s a third option for users to choose from.

Recently, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, in the latest edition of his newsletter Power On, claimed that watchOS will receive a major update this time. “The watchOS update will tell you most of what you need to know about the Apple Watch in 2023” he said. Hardware changes are expected to be minimal and the operating system upgrade could be the focus. The watchOS 10 update is said to come with new watch faces, workout modes, more native watch apps, etc

Apple’s WWDC 2023 will start on June 5 with the five-day-long event set to conclude on June 9. The event will focus on the latest software releases, however, Apple is also speculated to unveil its first mixed-reality headset during the event. The annual conference could also see the launch of new MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and iMac models. Apple is also expected to unveil its xrOS, iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and macOS 14 at the event.

iOS 16 Won’t Reach iPhone 6s, iPhone 7, Original iPhone SE; Apple Watch Series 3 Not Eligible for watchOS 9

iOS 16 will not make its way to the iPhone models that are older than the iPhone 8, Apple has confirmed following the announcement of its new iOS release. This simply means that if you have an iPhone 7, iPhone 6s, or the original iPhone SE, you will not be able to experience iOS 16. Similarly, Apple has silently removed the Apple Watch Series 8 from the list of compatible Apple Watch models for watchOS 9. Both the new iOS and watchOS releases — alongside iPadOS 16 and macOS 13 Ventura — will be available for testing under public betas in July and will be released as free software updates for eligible hardware later this year.

As mentioned on the iOS 16 Preview site, the new software is not compatible with the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, and the original iPhone SE. The list of compatible models for the iOS 16 update, instead, starts with the iPhone 8 and iPhone SE (2020). The iPhone 8, which debuted in 2017, is the oldest model in the list of eligible devices for iOS 16.

The iPhone 6s series was launched back in 2015, while the iPhone 7 models and the iPhone SE came in 2016.

However, despite being dated, all these models received iOS 15 last year. This is unlike how various Android smartphone makers treat their existing users as they often pull software update support for their older models. Nevertheless, companies including Google and Samsung have started making a change on that front by promising to seed software upgrades for up to four years and security updates for up to five years to their select models.

The list of devices that are ineligible to receive iOS 16 also includes the iPod touch (7th generation) — the last-generation iPod. The iPod touch (7th generation) debuted relatively later in May 2019.

Similar to the iOS update, Apple has confirmed on its website that the Apple Watch Series 3 will not receive the watchOS 9 update. The particular model was launched in 2017 and received watchOS 8 last year.

With the Apple Watch Series 3 becoming ineligible for the update, the Apple Watch Series 4 has become the oldest model in the Apple Watch family to receive watchOS 9.

If you own any of the dated Apple devices, you are now forced by the Cupertino company to upgrade to a newer hardware to get the latest software experience. But nonetheless, Apple is expected to continue to provide security updates to some of the devices that are ineligible to receive the latest software.

Separately, Apple announced at its WWDC 2022 keynote on Monday that public beta releases of iOS 16, iPadOS 16, watchOS 9, and macOS Ventura will be available to users for testing in July. Exact release dates are yet to be revealed, though.

Before giving the new software versions as public betas, Apple has released its new iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, and macOS Ventura for developers who have signed up for the Apple Developer Program. The company has brought the first developer preview tvOS 9, without any pomp and show.

New software, hardware

What to expect at WWDC 2022

Similar to past years, Apple at its WWDC keynote is expected to announce a range of software-focussed developments. We can safely expect the launch of iOS 16, iPadOS 16, macOS 13, watchOS 9, and tvOS 16 at the event. Additionally, there are reports to suggest the launch of some new Mac devices at the keynote. These could include the anticipated MacBook Air with M2 chip as well as new Mac mini and Mac Pro models.

iOS 16

One of the biggest attractions of this year’s WWDC is expected to be iOS 16. The new operating system for the iPhone will include updates to notifications as well as new Messages and Health apps, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Users are reported to be able to resize app windows while using multiple apps at the same time. This would be a step ahead of the existing Split View where two apps can be open simultaneously.

macOS 13

Although there aren’t many reports to suggest what is coming on macOS 13, we can expect some incremental changes. One of them could be an update to the Settings app. Some key preloaded Apple apps on the operating system are also expected to receive a design overhaul this time.

On the part of its naming, macOS 13 may get Mammoth title — based on a region that is in the Sierra Nevada. Apple considered taking names from the mountain range for some of the previous macOS versions as well.

watchOS 9

For Apple Watch users, this year’s WWDC keynote is expected to bring watchOS 9 as an update. The new watchOS release will have improvements that will “affect day-to-day operating and navigation” on the Apple Watch, per Gurman. There could also be the new Health app to improve health tracking on the Watch hardware — alongside the iPhone.

Apple is also said to be working on improving the atrial fibrillation detection feature that would be detailed at the keynote.

tvOS 16

There aren’t any significant details on what exactly we can expect on the part of tvOS 16. However, it is safe to assume that Apple would announce some improvements to retain its users on Apple TV. Some reports in the past also suggested that Apple would bring homeOS as its dedicated smart home operating system. That has not yet officially been announced. Nevertheless, we can expect that tvOS could get some new features to control smart home devices from a TV.

New Mac devices

Although Apple has a history of launching its hardware at dedicated events, recent reports suggested that the company could use its WWDC keynote this time to unveil some new Mac devices. These could include the new MacBook Air that has been a part of the rumour mill for some time. It would come with some new design-level changes including eye-catching shades — alongside the M2 chip. The new Apple silicone is not likely to have significant performance upgrades over the existing M1 series but some improvements to help deliver an improved battery life and an enhanced user experience.

Alongside the new MacBook Air, high-end Mac mini and new Mac Pro are rumoured to be in the works. Both could be shown at the keynote as Apple’s new hardware offerings.

However, for the iPhone and Apple Watch lovers, Apple is expected to host the special event sometime in September only.

Apple WWDC 2022 to Be Reportedly Held With Limited In-Person Attendance

American tech giant Apple has revealed that the 2022 Worldwide Developers Conference will happen between June 6 and June 10 and will be streamed online.

According to GSM Arena, there will also be in-person attendance, but limited. The opening keynote will still be pre-recorded, but the Apple Park at 1 Infinite Loop in Cupertino will open its doors to a limited number of developers.

The group of developers can watch the keynote in the company of Apple’s engineers and designers. The lucky few had to apply through an online form in the early days of the week, and the company is now sending out invitations.

As per the report, all attendees “must follow Apple’s health and safety protocols”, meaning a negative COVID-19 test must be provided. However, masks are optional. Once they are in, they will get a tour around the facilities of the new Developer Center at Apple Park.

Apple is expected to unveil new versions of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS at the upcoming WWDC 2022. The company is said to be working on iOS 16 and macOS 13. The new version of iOS 16 is expected to bring new redesigned app icons for Apple apps, camera app improvements, new widgets, and upgraded themes. The update is said to be available to iPhones launched after the iPhone 6s. Meanwhile, the iPadOS 16 will reportedly bring floating app windows, new widgets, and support for video editing tools such as Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, and Xcode.

Recent reports have also tipped Apple may launch new hardware at the event. The company is said to be working on a new Apple silicon powered Mac Pro. It is likely that the company may unveil this product at WWDC 2022. The new smaller Mac Pro is expected to feature a 40 core CPU and a 128 core GPU.
