Apple Reportedly Adding a new ‘Repair State’ With iOS 17.5 That Keeps Find My on During Repairs

Apple is reportedly working on a new feature that will allow iPhone users to keep Find My on even when they send their phone for repair. This new feature is being called Repair State, and it is said to offer a workaround to turning the device tracking feature off, which can reduce the security of the device. This feature was spotted with the latest iOS 17.5 beta update. The global stable version of the operating system could arrive later this month.

The feature was spotted by 9to5Mac within the codes of the iOS 17.5 beta 4, which rolled out on Tuesday for users who have enrolled in the Beta Programme. This feature is said to be partially working for beta testers. As per the report, the Repair State feature was likely added to allow users to track their device even when it is being repaired.

At present, Apple requires users to turn off Find My when handing in the iPhone for repair. The guideline is also mentioned in Apple’s Support Page which states, “To prevent anyone else from getting service for your device without your knowledge, Apple might not be able to service your device if Find My isn’t turned off.” The idea behind the rule is to make sure the person who is handing in the phone is indeed the owner of the phone as well. However, doing this has become trickier with recent updates by the tech giant.

Apple introduced Stolen Device Protection with the iOS 17.3, which adds a time delay when accessing critical settings such as removing Apple account or turning off Find My. Currently, the time delay to turn off Find My is one hour. This means if a user forgets to turn on the feature and shows up at the authorised repair store, they will have to either wait for an hour or come back later. This issue can be solved through Repair State.

As per the report, Repair State mode in iOS 17.5 beta 4 allows users to confirm that the iPhone is going for repair by using their Apple ID and password. While in this state, a user cannot remove their Apple ID. This allows the technician to confirm the owner of the device without requiring them to turn off Find My.

However, the publication has warned beta testers to not enable the mode if the device is not going for repair. This is because currently there is no way to turn off this mode and once it is enabled, the Apple ID cannot be removed. It is unclear whether Apple has not added this feature intentionally so that the technician can remove it at their end, or the stable version of the feature will come with an option to remove it.

iOS 17.3 RC With Stolen Device Protection Feature Arrives for Beta Testers Ahead of Expected Rollout Next Week

Apple is rolling out the iOS 17.3 Release Candidate (RC) to beta testers, weeks after it reached beta testers last December. The iPhone maker is now expected to roll out the stable version of iOS 17.3 as soon as next week — the final release usually comes a week after the release candidate rolls out to beta testers. The update which has been in beta for a while, is an important one, mainly because it adds Stolen Device Protection, a much-needed security layer when an iPhone is stolen and the thief has obtained the victim’s passcode. It is one of a handful of features that will make it to this update.

iOS 17.3 RC began rolling out on Wednesday to users who have signed up to receive beta versions of Apple’s operating systems. Apple recently mentioned that an update was expected to arrive “later next week” in a press release related to the launch of a new Black Unity Sport Band for the Apple Watch. The release also mentions that a new Unity Bloom Lock Screen wallpaper for iPhone and iPad will also arrive with this update.

Apart from the new Lock Screen wallpaper, the most notable addition to iOS 17.3 is Apple’s new Stolen Device Protection feature. From what we have seen in a previous beta release, the opt-in feature (not switched on by default) will basically counter thieves who attempt to learn a user’s passcode before stealing their iPhones. Once stolen, these thieves will then use the passcode to attempt to lock the user out of their own iPhone (and Apple account) by changing passwords and settings, since they have knowledge or have seen the user type in their passcode.

Once enabled, Stolen Device Protection protection kicks in automatically once it detects that an iPhone is being unlocked in an unknown area or location. The feature then locks settings options behind biometric (Face ID or Touch ID) authentication. It then also adds a one-hour time delay for making changes to each setting, which makes it easier for the victim to regain control of their stolen iPhone by buying them more time.

Apart from Stolen Device Protection, iOS 17.3 will also bring Collaborative Music Playlists which is an Apple Music feature. It will let you team up with other users to create shared playlists, letting more than one person contribute to a playlist. Apple is also said to have added song reactions using emoji with this update.

Apple is also expected to bring next-generation CarPlay and support for AirPlay in hotels, which were announced previously at WWDC 2023 but have not yet been rolled out. And lastly, the EU’s DMA regulations that go into effect in March, might also force Apple to split the App Store in two and build in support for third-party app stores and app sideloading on iOS for iPhone models used in EU countries, according to a recent report.

iOS 17.2 Update With Journal App, Spatial Video Capture, New Widgets, and More Available Now

Apple released the iOS 17.2 update on Monday (December 11) as the latest OS version for iPhone. The update includes security fixes, patches, improvements as well as new features. It brings Apple’s long-awaited new Journal app (Review) to the iPhone. It also enables Spatial Video capture on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The iOS 17.2 update also brings new actions for the iPhone 15 Pro’s Action Button, new Weather widget, AirDrop improvements, and improvements to the Messages app. Further, the update brings Qi2 wireless charging support to the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 series. However, the AirPlay in hotels feature and Apple Music collaborative playlists have been delayed and pushed to 2024.

After several weeks of testing, Apple has officially released iOS 17.2 to all compatible iPhone models alongside iPadOS 17.2, macOS 14.2 Sonoma, and watchOS 10.2 updates. The Cupertino-based tech giant has introduced the Journal app with the latest iOS update. The health and wellness-focused app that helps users record daily activities and thoughts was initially announced at the company’s WWDC event in June alongside iOS 17. Users have the option to lock their Journal using Touch ID or Face ID and filters can be used to find bookmarked entries. Further, there are scheduled notifications to remind users to write when they choose to and iCloud syncs for the entries.

The iOS 17.2 update brings the ability to record spatial videos on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, which can then be viewed in 3D using the company’s Vision Pro mixed reality headset. With the latest update, the iPhone 15 Pro models also get a boost in focusing speed and accuracy of its telephoto sensors while capturing distant objects.

With iOS 17.2, the Action button on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max gains a translate function. This can be used to quickly translate phrases or have a conversation with someone in another language.

Other features available in iOS 17.2 version are new Weather widgets, a Digital Clock widget, a Favourite Songs Playlist in Apple Music, a new sticker option in the context menu, AirDrop improvements, and Memoji updates. The Messages app gets new features, including a catch-up button that lets users easily jump to the first unread message in a conversation by tapping the arrow in the top-right corner. It also gets Contact Key Verification as a security feature to assist people facing digital threats.

Apple has also enabled Qi2 wireless charging support on the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 series with iOS 17.2. Further, Siri in the latest iOS version can access data from the Health app using your voice. Enhanced AutoFill, keyboard layout support for eight Saimi languages, and Sensitive Content Warning for stickers in Messages are other key highlights.

To download the latest iOS 17.2 update, head to Settings> General > Software Update and download and follow the instructions. Users are recommended to connect their iPhone to a power source until the update finishes installing.

Unfortunately, the Apple Music collaborative playlists feature that appeared in the iOS 17.2 beta versions is not available in the final version. This functionality allows users to add friends to their playlists and enables multiple users to add, record, and remove songs from the same playlist. iOS 17’s AirPlay in hotel rooms feature is also not included in the final release. Apple has stated that these two features have been pushed to 2024.

Apple to Rollout iOS 17.1 by October 24, Fix Radiation Levels on iPhone 12 Models in France: Report

Apple rolled out iOS 17 last month, bringing iterative changes and a few new features for iPhone users. The latest OS has already seen updates, with iOS 17.0.3 resolving the overheating issue on iPhone 15 Pro. Now, the Cupertino, California based company is reportedly getting ready to release iOS 17.1. According to a French regulatory body that monitors wireless communications, Apple will roll out the next iOS update by October 24. It’s worth noting that the update will specifically address radiation levels on iPhone 12 in France. In September, the French watchdog had flagged the iPhone 12 for allegedly breaching European radiation exposure limits.

As per an update from The Agence Nationale des Frequences (ANFR) on its website (via iPhoneSoft), Apple has already developed the software update, which has also been validated by the agency. The update brings iPhone 12’s specific absorption rates (SAR) within the European permissible limit. According to ANFR, the update has already rolled out to some beta testers over the last week, and a wider rollout for all iPhone 12 users will begin on October 24.

ANFR also confirmed that iPhone 12 sales in France will remain prohibited until the update is released for the public. Back in September, ANFR banned Apple from selling iPhone 12 after tests showed that the model’s SAR values were just above the legal limit. The ANFR conducted tests on a total of 141 smartphones, including the iPhone 12 bought from retail stores in France. Two of those iPhone models showed SAR values above the permissible limit set by the European Union. The EU sets specific safety thresholds for SAR values of devices, which scientific studies have shown could be linked to an increased risk of cancer.

After an initial denial, Apple had promised to release an iOS update to address the concerns over the radiation levels on iPhone 12 models in France. The upcoming update will specifically bring a fix for the issue.

With the launch of its latest iPhone 15 series, Apple recently discontinued the sale of iPhone 12, along with iPhone 14 Pro models and the iPhone 13 Mini in India.

Earlier this month, the iPhone maker also began rolling out the iOS 16.7.1 update for older models, patching two security flaws.

Apple to Pre-Install Latest Software on iPhone Models Sold via Stores: Mark Gurman

Apple will reportedly start pre-installing the latest software available for an iPhone model before selling them via Apple retail stores, according to Mark Gurman. Often the models require an update after the customer unboxes it as the new software update may not be available when the iPhone are packed. Some customers unaware of these details may miss out on the optimum performance of a newly purchased handset because of older software. However, whether Apple will extend the same support to its other partner retailers is still unknown.

Gurman, in his latest weekly newsletter mentions that Apple is working on a new system that will help the company update all iPhone models to their latest possible software before being sold. This will reportedly be done while their packaging is still intact. Apple is said to be making a customised pad-like device upon which an iPhone box can be placed. The phone inside the box will then supposedly be updated to the latest available software.

According to Gurman, the system that Apple is working on, can wirelessly turn on the concerned iPhone, update its software, and then turn the power off, all within the packaging. Gurman suggests that Apple is attempting to roll out this technology to its official retail stores by the end of this year. It is unclear whether the Cupertino-based tech giant will extend this feature to other partner retail stores.

Sometimes customers are unaware of the software updates available to their handsets and therefore tend to miss out on optimum performance that can be achieved with the latest software. This new technology can help those people have the best possible user experience. For all present iPhone users, you can check if you have the latest software update by going to Settings > General > Software Update and following the step-by-step prompts on-screen.

Apple recently launched the iPhone 15 lineup, which includes the base iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The base model starts in India at a price of Rs. 79,990.

iPhone 15 Pro Overheating Fix Rolling Out Now Via New iOS 17 Update: All Details

Apple has finally released a much-awaited software update for its recently launched iPhone 15 lineup aiming to resolve the known heating issues. Tagged as iOS 17.0.3, the software update is about 423.2MB in size and can be downloaded by heading into General>Software Update> and checking for the same, which will push your iPhone to check for an update instead of waiting for a notification to arrive. While the update is mainly aimed at iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max users, it is available for both iPhone 15 and other recently launched iPhone models, as well. The same fixes have also been applied to iPadOS 17.0.3 as well.

The new iOS 17.0.3 update, according to the changelog, lists only two fixes. The first one is to do with a kernel exploit where an attacker with local access to a device “may have actively exploited against versions of iOS before iOS 16.6”. The second fix is to do with buffer overflow, which results in arbitrary code execution or the libvpx bug as it’s now known as.

The update also addresses an issue that may have caused iPhone 15 Pro models to run warmer than expected. This update along with an update to Instagram (version 302), which was known to be one of the apps that triggered the overheating issue for some users should cool down the iPhone of affected users. Other apps that were known to trigger overheating in the new iPhone 15 Pro models include Uber and Asphalt 9: Legends.

Apple did claim that the overheating with its new iPhone 15 Pro models does not pose a risk to the user. It initially also blamed the overheating issues to some other factors like high-power chargers, wireless charging, and background processes that take place after an iPhone has been restored. Apple told Forbes that the new fix would not throttle the phone’s performance in any way and that its overheating problems had nothing to do with the iPhone’s hardware design, which on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models replaces the stainless-steel outer frame with one made from recycled titanium.

The Apple iPhone 15 models launched alongside the new Apple Watch Series 9 and the Apple Watch Ultra 2. The iPhone 15 models are priced from Rs. 79,900 in India while the iPhone 15 Pro models start from Rs. 1,39,900.

iOS 17: Here’s How to Use NameDrop Feature on Your iPhone

Apple released iOS 17 for all users across the globe earlier this month alongside the new iPhone 15 series. The latest iteration of the iPhone operating system has many interesting features and upgrades including a new NameDrop feature. This functionality works like AirDrop and allows you to share contact details by placing your iPhone close to someone else’s iPhone. This can be performed by bringing an iPhone and Apple Watch together as well. However, Apple will bring this feature to the wearable in an update later this year.

How to use the NameDrop feature on iOS 17

iPhone users have to switch on AirDrop to use the NameDrop feature. This can be done by heading to Settings>Select General > AirDrop. Make sure your AirDrop is open to Everyone and both iPhone models are running on iOS 17. Check out how you can swap contacts with another iPhone.

  1. Hold the top of your iPhone near the top of someone else’s device.
  2. A glow will emerge from the top of both devices to indicate a successful pairing and NameDrop will appear on both screens.
  3. Continue holding and NameDrop will appear on both screens.
  4. You can choose to Share or Receive Only or do both at once.
  5. To cancel, move the two devices away from each other before NameDrop completes.

NameDrop only works for sending new contact information, not updating an existing contact. Users can turn off NameDrop by heading into Settings>Select General > AirDrop and toggle the Bringing Devices Together option. Apple already confirmed that NameDrop will be available on Apple Watch in an update later this year.

iOS 17

Apple’s iOS 17 software has been available to eligible iPhone models since last week. Besides the NameDrop functionality, the latest operating system brings a lot of improvements and new features to iPhone models including StandBy Mode and a Live Voicemail feature that allows users to read a real-time transcription at the same time the caller is speaking. In iOS 17, the Health app offers new mental health features and Reminders show grocery lists. It also includes an Apple Journal app and Offline Maps allow you to share AirTags and other Find My-enabled accessories with other users.
