Apple Focuses on a Pragmatic AI Strategy as It Plans to Integrate New Features Within Core Apps: Report

Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 event is likely to become one of the most important events in its recent history. The tech giant has been preparing its artificial intelligence (AI) strategy and new AI-powered features for its user base for the last one and a half years. The company’s CEO Tim Cook has also promised “exciting” generative AI features in the last two earnings calls to stakeholders. A new report now claims that the iPhone maker might take the route of pragmatism and offer features that are more practical for its users.

Apple’s Practical AI Vision

While the Cupertino-based tech giant would likely want to leave a lasting impact with its WWDC event on June 10, following up after OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft’s AI announcements might be difficult. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman highlighted in his Power On newsletter, that instead of competing with the flashy and awe-inspiring AI advancements, the company is more likely to introduce features geared towards practical use.

Some of these features have been reported in the past. Siri could get an AI integration that would make her more conversational and adept at handling complex tasks. The Safari browser could also get an AI-powered web page summary feature. The Notes app is also said to get a live transcription feature. Additionally, a report also mentions that custom AI emojis could be coming to the iPhone.

As per the report, the idea is to offer users features that they can make use of daily. Utilising its massive user base could make it a top contender in the AI space. However, this is easier said than done. Gurman points out that Apple is still steadfast in its approach of making some of the more compute-heavy AI features available via servers. This could be difficult proposition for iPhone users to accept, especially since the company has spent years preaching data privacy and locally-processed features.ma

Apple’s OpenAI Deal

Apart from these, the tech giant might have another ace up its sleeve. The report claims Apple has closed a deal with OpenAI that will allow the iPhone maker to integrate ChatGPT within its devices. This would allow Apple to introduce one of the major chatbots on its smartphone and possibly Mac devices. If the company has any other surprises for the users, they will be known on June 10 when the keynote session of WWDC 2024 commences.

Apple Music to Add Support for ‘Passthrough’ Feature, Smart Audio Transitions with iOS 18: Report

Apple Music will receive upgrades that improve the performance of the app on iOS 18 and macOS 15 later this year, according to a report. The company’s upcoming operating system updates are expected to bring revamped versions of Apple Music and QuickTime, the company audio and video playback apps. Apple Music could improve support for its existing crossfade feature. Meanwhile the iPhone maker is also reportedly testing a new ‘Passthrough’ that is said to be available on supported devices later this year.

An AppleInsider report, citing people aware of the company’s plans, states that new versions of the Apple Music and QuickTime apps are currently being tested internally. These apps are said to offer improvements to media playback and are expected to be introduced later this year when the company rolls out its iOS 18 and macOS 15 software updates to eligible iPhone models and Mac computers.

The first feature that is reportedly coming to Apple Music with iOS 18 and macOS 15 is called “smart song transitions”. It is said to be an improved version of the existing crossfade feature for Apple Music that lowers the volume of a track a few seconds before it ends, while starting playback of the next song and ramping up the volume so that there’s no silence between the two tracks.

While users can already adjust the crossfade setting on Apple Music to a higher or lower value (in seconds) to increase or decrease the time spent seamlessly switching between tracks, the smart song transitions might be able to dynamically adjust the transition time between tracks. A screenshot of the purported feature on Apple Music for iOS also shows a new “Smart” transition option above the existing crossfade slider that offers up to 12 seconds to seamlessly switch to the next track.

The “Passthrough” feature that is said to be coming to iOS 18 and macOS 18 will only be accessible on specific models, according to the report. While there’s no word on what the feature does, or whether it’s a rebrand of an existing feature such as Spatial Audio or Transparency mode, the publication states that it will “only be available on supported hardware”.

We can expect to hear more about Apple’s upcoming software features at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2024) that is scheduled to begin on June 10. This year, the company is said to be working on integrating several AI features into its iOS, iPadOS, and macOS operating systems for iPhone, iPad, and Mac computers, respectively.

WWDC 2024 to Take Place From June 10 to June 14: All You Need to Know

WWDC 2024 is set to take place in June, Apple announced on Wednesday. The annual developers conference typically takes place at Apple’s headquarters and an online telecast of the event gives developers across the world a chance to look at new software features and enhancements that the company is working on for the coming year. This year, the iPhone maker is expected to unveil new artificial intelligence (AI) features and experiences that are likely to make their way to Apple’s upcoming software updates.

Apple announced that WWDC 2024 will begin on June 10 and will be an online event with access to video sessions. The keynote event will also have an in-person experience on the first day — Apple says space for the event is limited, and enthusiasts and developers can apply to attend via the Apple Developer app and the company’s website. Winners of Apple’s Swift Student challenge will also be eligible to apply for the in-person experience, according to the company.

While Apple does not typically reveal too many details ahead of its events, previous reports have given us an idea of what to expect from WWDC 2024. The company is expected to catch up to Samsung and Google this year, adding new generative AI-powered features to its smartphones and computers. Apple is reportedly considering partnerships with AI firms like Google and Baidu in order to provide support for cloud-based GenAI features.

This year, Apple is expected to announce details of its next major operating system updates — iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS 15, watchOS 11, and tvOS 18. At least some of these updates are expected to bring AI features and experiences, some of these cloud-based, and others on-device. iOS 18 will reportedly feature a updated interface and allow users to place icons wherever they want on the screen. We’re unlikely to see new Apple Silicon chips being unveiled at WWDC, as the company announced the M3 chips much later last year, at its ‘Scary fast’ event in October 2023.

While Apple usually launches new hardware at separate events held throughout the year — recent reports suggest the imminent launch of new iPad Air and OLED-sporting iPad Pro models — the company could also announce some new devices at its annual developer conference. Last year, the firm unveiled the Apple Vision Pro, its first wearable mixed reality headset, at WWDC 2023, and new devices, or accessories — like the rumoured AirPods models, could be announced at the event.

Apple Pauses Development of iOS 18 and macOS 15 to Eliminate Bugs in Early Versions

Apple has paused work on development of new features for upcoming versions of its iPhone, iPad, and Mac operating systems that are expected to be released next year, according to a Bloomberg report. The firm has reportedly asked employees to tackle bugs that have shown up in early versions of the code — the pause is expected to end at the end of the week — instead of adding new features that could make their way to iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15 in 2024.

The report cites unnamed sources familiar with the company’s decision and states that Apple’s software engineering team discovered several bugs that were not spotted during internal testing, leading to the decision to pause development of new features in order to tackle and resolve the existing bugs in the code over a one-week period.

Apple’s next operating system versions are expected to arrive in the form of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS 15, and watchOS 11 — the updates for iPhone and iPad are codenamed Crystal, while the Mac and Apple Watch operating systems are internally referred to as Glow and Moonstone, as per the report.

The pause on development of these operating systems has come after these three operating system updates reached their first major milestone, also known as M1. Ahead of development leading to the second milestone, Apple’s software developers will have to root out existing issues with the code and fix them.

As per the report, the company’s upcoming software releases aren’t the only ones that are affected by the pause put in place by Apple. The iPhone maker has also reportedly halted development on visionOS as well as the already-released iOS 17.4 — a minor update to the smartphone operating system that is expected to arrive within the first quarter of 2024.

While Bloomberg reports that Apple plans to lift the pause on development this week, the efforts to remove bugs from the code aren’t likely to affect the expected rollout of the updates — Apple typically unveils its next operating systems at its annual Worldwide Developer’s Conference (WWDC) event and rolls them out in September.
