EA Sports F1 24 Sets May 31 Release Date, Gameplay Features Revealed in New Trailer

Electronic Arts has revealed more details about its upcoming Formula 1 racing sim, EA Sports F1 24, with a new trailer. F1 24, first announced in February, will arrive earlier than previous games in the series on May 31 across PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series S/X. EA detailed the features coming to the game and confirmed that players will be able to compete as a driver of their choice from the 2024 F1 season in the Career mode for the first time.

F1 24 brings a new Dynamic Handling system that promises a more realistic driving feel of an F1 car. There are upgrades all around, with new suspension kinematics, tyre models, advanced aerodynamic simulation, and new engine and car setup options. “All driving aspects are improved with cornering, rolling resistance, brake pressure, ambient track temperature, and variable conditions enabling drivers to receive immediate feedback to maximise their on-track performance,” EA said.

EA’s upcoming racing sim is focussing on authenticity, with improvements to existing circuits to bring them closer to real-world counterparts. Off the track, F1 24 will also feature a new broadcast presentation package, cutscenes and actual driver audio samples from F1 broadcasts for a more immersive experience.

The Career mode has also been overhauled, EA said. In addition to racing as a player-created custom driver, players can also race as real-life F1 drivers from the 2024 season, or even as iconic past F1 drivers. The Career mode will also include new features like race-day tasks and Contract Targets that help players build a reputation, long-term goals, two-player Career and more.

“Our biggest Career innovation since 2016 delivers more of what our players want with greater variety away from the track,” Lee Mather, Senior Creative Director at Codemasters, said. “Alongside new handling and Career innovations, updated circuits, new audio, and a refreshed broadcast presentation give players the feeling of being closer to the grid.” he added.

EA Sports F1 24 will be available in a Standard Edition and a digital-only Champions Edition, which grants access to a selection of liveries, two Icons — James Hunt and Juan Pablo Montoya — in Career mode, in-game currency, F1 World Bumper Pack, VIP Podium Pass and three days of early access, starting May 28. F1 24 releases on May 31, with pre-orders for the game live on all platforms.

Star Wars Jedi 3 Is in Development at Respawn Entertainment, Actor Cameron Monaghan Confirms

Actor Cameron Monaghan casually confirmed that a sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is in development. During the Ocala Comic Con event, the voice and motion capture artist behind the protagonist Cal Kestis said, “We’re working on the third. We’re in the process of doing it right now.” The news comes as a surprise, considering the series director Stig Asmussen, who rebuilt and instilled faith in single-player Star Wars games, recently left EA/ Respawn Entertainment. However, he always expressed interest in furthering and concluding Cal’s arc through a trilogy, with discussions of a sequel dating back even before 2019’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was out.

Before leaving, Asmussen claimed that he’d carved out the entire timeframe for Cal’s trilogy, adding that Star Wars Jedi 3 would likely be built on Unreal Engine 5. Now it seems as though the series will continue regardless of his presence, and might have to deal with some retooling to get some ‘proprietary’ development tools to work with the new engine.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Review

Earlier this month, Respawn Entertainment dropped patch 7 for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, aimed at further optimisation on PC with native support for Nvidia’s DLSS upscaling technology. Both the PS5 and Xbox Series S/X versions also received performance improvements that target 60fps. At launch, the game opened to rave reviews praising its story, alongside robust gameplay and level design that borrowed from FromSoftware’s Souls games. However, it was also heavily criticised for its poor performance, with choppy framerates even in areas with minimal activity on screen. It’s been five months since release — April 28 — and the game appears to have significantly improved in that duration.

During EA’s Q1 2024 earning call, held in August, it was confirmed that Respawn Entertainment is in the early stages of making dedicated versions of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor for the last-gen PS4 and Xbox One. Similar to other major AAA publishers, the studio entirely skipped a launch on the older generation of consoles for ease in optimisation and to render high-quality visuals with the new hardware, albeit in this case, the team still hit some hurdles. For now, there is no release window for the new versions, but when it does drop, it should serve as an interesting testing parameter to see how much graphical fidelity was sacrificed to gain 30fps on last-gen consoles — running on a hard drive.

EA Sports FC 24 Revealed: Release Date, Women’s Football in Ultimate Team, More

EA Sports FC 24, the newly rebranded football simulation game franchise, has been fully revealed with a release date of September 29. The date matches leaks from last week, which suggested that the game would debut in early access seven days prior — on September 22 — available to those who pre-order the Ultimate Edition. Manchester City F.C. footballer Erling Haaland was revealed as the cover star, putting in a surprise appearance at EA’s global event in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson was present, of course, delivering a lengthy monologue about his love for football, while somehow managing to not slip up a single time and accidentally blurting out the word ‘FIFA.’

In a sense, FC24 is basically the same FIFA game you’ve known for years, but with new branding and a couple of additional features that are entirely novel to the franchise. First up, EA Sports will continue to expand on the presence of women’s football in the game, by bringing them to the Ultimate Team mode for the first time. Judging by the trailer, it appears as though the division won’t be separated as men’s or women’s FUT, but rather combine the two so you can have either gender on the same team and on the pitch. The studio previously brought the National Women’s Soccer League to FIFA 23 and it seems like the trend will carry over to this new iteration, thanks to the addition of two new women’s leagues — Liga F and Frauen-Bundesliga, the main women’s leagues in Spain and Germany, respectively.

EA Sports has secured agreements with various footballing leagues to keep FC24 as true to the actual sport, bringing in hundreds of stadiums, over 19,000 players, and more than 30 official leagues including the Premier League, La Liga, and the UEFA Champions League. For the uninitiated, EA Sports ditched the FIFA brand following a financial disagreement with the footballing body, which reportedly asked for a $1 billion (about Rs. 8,216 crore) payment every four years. Electronic Arts then withdrew from the agreement, with CEO Wilson claiming that the only value it ever got from the FIFA deal was the “four letters on the box.”

An enhanced version of the Frostbite Engine serves as the foundation of the game, which boasts smoother animations and redesigned player models. HyperMotionV serves to offer realism in the game, having captured volumetric data from over 180 professional men’s and women’s football matches to deliver realistic movement. Meanwhile, PlayStyles goes beyond overall player ratings to bring to life the on-pitch abilities that are said to make players special. Each PlayStyle gives players unique capabilities you’ll see and feel that make their way of playing more ‘authentic’. The company also introduced Ultimate Team Evolutions, allowing you to upgrade players throughout the season based on individual objectives, granting additional stat boosts and skills.

Immortals of Aveum Gets a Magic-Heavy Gameplay Trailer, Reveals Demanding System Requirements

Immortals of Aveum, EA’s upcoming magic shooter, just got a gameplay trailer and it feels overwhelming. Developer Ascendant Studios dropped six minutes of raw, HUD-less footage, showcasing its fluid spell-based combat and visuals built on Unreal Engine 5.1, which without context, one could easily mistake for a first-person Forspoken. But its similarities don’t just end there, because the PC system requirements for Immortals of Aveum are extremely high. Players would need at least an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Super to run the game at minimum/ low-medium settings. Requirements also add that an SSD is ‘strongly recommended.’

For what it’s worth, Immortals of Aveum does look beautiful, putting you in control of Jak, a spell caster who joins an elite order of battlemages to stop the Everwar. Combat relies on three types of magic — Force (Blue), Life (Green), and Chaos (Red) — all of which cast a pentagram akin to Doctor Strange, taking up a chunk of screen space. In the footage, we see our hero fighting against some demonic enemies, grappling onto higher areas, and solving an elaborate puzzle, all of which appear unpleasant due to the bright magic animations and particles. They’re quite distracting with streams of colours just bouncing around the map akin to bullet-hell games like Returnal. Mobs also don’t seem to get staggered by our attacks as much — or maybe they do. It’s hard to tell how inconsistent it is with so many things going on.

Immortals of Aveum PC system requirements

As mentioned before, the PC requirements for Immortals of Aveum are quite daunting and going by Steam’s Hardware Survey, an egregious number of gamers won’t be able to play it. Even Forspoken offered support for an Nvidia GTX 1060 (6GB) card, catering to the vast majority of PC gamers, despite being optimised poorly. Given how a PS5 with half the hardware capability will run Immortals of Aveum at optimal settings, it seems like it all boils down to poor optimisation on PC. The platform isn’t a stranger to receiving bad ports in general — more recently seen with The Last of Us Part I, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, and even Hogwarts Legacy to an extent.

Mark Maratea CTO attributes the steep hardware requirements to the Unreal Engine 5.1 tech they’re using. “In any other game, you might see what looks like a big craggy wall, but it’s actually flat with a craggy texture and maybe some shader trickery,” he said in a blog post. “We don’t have to do that; we actually build an object with all of that detail, and Nanite determines whether that detail shows up based on your distance.” Maratea also claims that the difference in quality between cutscene and gameplay is ‘super-close,’ but in my opinion, the footage says otherwise.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Director Wants to Make Cal Kestis’ Story a Trilogy

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is still over a month away from launch, but that hasn’t stopped developers Respawn Entertainment from considering a trilogy. Speaking to IGN, director Stig Asmussen revealed that he would like to see Jedi Knight Cal Kestis’ (Cameron Monaghan) arc stretched to a third and final title. While its possibility depends on how well this upcoming game performs, he claims that sequel discussions were happening before even 2019’s Jedi: Fallen Order was out. If a threequel is greenlit, Asmussen stated that it would most likely be built using Unreal Engine 5.

“I always wanted to see this as a trilogy,” Asmussen told IGN. “How can we take Cal and the crew to new places beyond what we were doing in the first game?” With Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, the development team had mapped out the timeframe (the game is set five years after the events of the first game), the stakes involved, its general tone, and explored ideas beyond the main story. Shifting over from Unreal Engine 4 would also be difficult since there are a “lot of proprietary things” that the current engine has been conditioned/ optimised to do — some of it requiring some retooling to get it to work on the new engine.

Last month, some new Star Wars Jedi: Survivor gameplay emerged, courtesy of IGN, touching upon the exploration of the planet Koboh. After crashlanding onto the planet, early in the game, Kestis must reach the Cantina to find someone who could help repair his ship. The exploration is massively improved upon from the first game through tameable beasts that can be used as mounts, the ability to fast travel, and icons that inform you about closed-off areas that can only be accessed once you unlock specific abilities. Drawing inspiration from Dark Souls games, fast travel in Jedi: Survivor works by finding meditation points, where one can rest to reset any ailments and select previously discovered checkpoints to warp towards. The game also draws from Metroid for its level design by locking away parts of the world and then forcing Kestis to find new gear/ skill upgrades, come back, and gain access to those areas.

The planet Koboh also serves as the central hub world, sprawling with NPCs to interact with and shops to purchase items from. In addition to your adorable droid BD-1, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor also features a new companion in Bode Akuna, who, as Asmussen previously mentioned, has a brother-like relationship with Kestis. A report suggests that he will accompany us on missions and actively participate in combat encounters by drawing enemy attention. Players can also command him to perform special moves that deal devastating damage.

Another gameplay reveal from last month offered a glimpse into some of Kestis’ fight stances, with him now being able to dual-wield lightsabers, or even join its hilts together to form a twin-blade staff that can be spun around to block incoming projectiles. You can also fling enemies into the air now, causing them to levitate above ground for a while. Previously, in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Force abilities were limited to push and pull.

PlayStation Plus March 2023 Free Games: Battlefield 2042, Minecraft Dungeons, Code Vein, and More

PlayStation Plus’ monthly free games for March 2023 were announced at its State of Play event, held early Friday. The three titles will be available to members of PS Plus Essential, Extra, and Deluxe/ Premium plans, starting March 7. Members can claim the multiplayer shooter Battlefield 2042, the hack-and-slash-styled Minecraft Dungeons, and the anime-themed Souls-like, Code Vein. These titles can be added to your PS4 and PS5 games library until April 3 and you’ll need to hold onto your PS Plus subscriptions to continue playing the free games.

At the State of Play event, PlayStation also confirmed that Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection — comprising Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy — will be brought onto PS Plus, later in March, as part of its ‘Game Catalogue’ initiative. The feature is exclusive to the higher-tier PS Plus Extra and Deluxe/ Premium members and adds four more games into the mix. They are: Tango Gameworks’ supernatural spirit-hunting game Ghostwire: Tokyo, Ubisoft’s Greek mythology-inspired adventure title Immortals: Fenyx Rising, the co-op tactical shooter Rainbow Six Extraction, and Tchia.

The last of them is an indie open-world title set against a tropical backdrop, as you glide, swim, or sail around in your boat, hoping to rescue your father from Meavora, the cruel tyrant who rules the archipelago. Tchia releases March 21 on PS4 and PS5 and will be available for free to players subscribed to PS Plus Extra and Deluxe.

PS Plus March 2023: Battlefield 2042

As the latest entry in EA’s long-running shooter franchise, Battlefield 2042 failed to live up to expectations. After stripping off the campaign segment, the title was released in an unfinished state, rampant with glitches, rendering issues, and it didn’t even include Battlefield’s iconic real-time destructible environment. A lot of work has gone into it since launch, and the game is now in a far better state, with map reworks and new specialists, as part of its season 3 update. The game also introduced a Portal mode, letting players mash-up weapons and tech from past Battlefield games to create new experiences, brimming with mayhem.

Battlefield 2042 will be available to play on PS4 and PS5. Season 4 launches February 28.

PS Plus March 2023: Minecraft Dungeons

Rush through procedurally generated dungeons, hack down enemies, and collect endless loot, in a mission to take down the ruthless Arch-Illager. Minecraft Dungeons plays from an isometric perspective and lets you experiment with various weapons and enchantments, as you explore dimension-hopping levels set within the larger Minecraft universe. You can brave the dungeons by yourself or hop into co-op mode with three other players to make your journey easy. It’s like Diablo, almost.

Minecraft Dungeons will be available to play on PS4.

PS Plus March 2023: Code Vein

Best described as an anime Souls-like, Code Vein pits you against a post-apocalyptic world overtaken by bizarre monsters, following a mysterious event called the Great Collapse. In it you play as a Revenant — a human corpse brought back to life via a parasite, granting vampire-like abilities, which can be further enhanced via a deep set of upgrades. While it carries over the punishing difficulty from other Bandai Namco-published games such as Dark Souls, it also adds an AI partner (or online co-op friend) to make battles easy. A flexible class system is included as well, letting you switch things up on the fly.

Code Vein will be available to play on PS4.

Earlier this month, PlayStation added the critically-acclaimed Horizon Forbidden West to its PS Plus Game Catalogue, which as mentioned before, is available to Extra and Deluxe tier subscribers. New additions to the catalogue also included Borderlands 3, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, Tekken 7, and more. Additionally, the company is offering a three-hour free trial for God of War Ragnarök, exclusive to PS Plus Deluxe/ Premium subscribers.

PlayStation Plus subscription in India starts at Rs. 499 per month for Essential, Rs. 749 per month for the Extra plan, and Rs. 849 per month for the top-tier Deluxe membership. The monthly free games are included with all three tiers.

Five Lord of the Rings Games Are Launching Within the Next 2 Years, Embracer Group Says

Five Lord of the Rings games are in development at Embracer Group. As per the company’s latest financial report, all those titles are planned to be released within the next two years — specifically, within the next financial year, which runs from April 1, 2023 to March 31, 2024. Back in August, Embracer Group purchased IP rights to The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit literary works by J.R.R. Tolkien, joining its vast catalogue of over 800 owned and controlled properties. While no exact titles were revealed in the briefing, we’re already aware of at least four of them to be in development for a while now.

The first is The Lord of the Rings: Gollum from Daedalic Entertainment, which recently received a new release window, alluding to a launch sometime before September, this year. Originally set for a 2021 release, the title suffered multiple delays, with the previous developer update stating that it needed more time to ensure an optimised performance at launch. While not explicitly said, the shake-up was possibly attributed to the negative fan reaction to its gameplay trailer, where many called out the game’s outdated graphics. Earlier this month, publisher Nacon announced an exclusive presentation for its upcoming titles, set for March 9, which also includes LOTR: Gollum. Hopefully, the game’s in a better state now.

“–this acquisition has generated a lot of interest among both internal and external partners for the Lord of the Rings IP, across different media formats. There are currently five games in production by external partners, to be released in the financial year 2023/24,” Embracer Group said in its financial report. Beyond Gollum, Free Range Games is known to be working on The Lord of the Rings: Moria, a survival crafting and base-building game centred around the Dwarves, as they set forth on an adventure to reclaim their lost home of Moria, located beneath the Misty Mountains. It is slated for release sometime this year on PC. A third untitled game based on the Middle-earth franchise is in development at Weta Workshop — the same digital effects company that has experience working on the original Peter Jackson movie trilogy. Private Division (OlliOlli World) is publishing it and is expected to launch in the fiscal year 2024.

The last one is possibly EA’s The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth, a mobile game focused on turn-based combat, a wide roster of characters from the fantasy universe, and “deep collection systems.” There aren’t many details about this game, but a press release notes “in-game purchases (including random items)” — raising suspicion as to whether it’s a gacha game, in the same vein as Genshin Impact. As mentioned before, there haven’t been any sightings of a fifth LOTR video game.

The report additionally notes that a movie, produced by an “external partner” is in development. Back in November, the company shut down Onoma (formerly Square Enix Montréal) merely three weeks after the rebranding. It was reported that Embracer wanted to shift focus to PC and console releases, with some of the staff being moved to Eidos-Montréal studio.

Xbox Game Pass February 2023: Atomic Heart, Madden NFL 23, and More

Xbox Game Pass is adding six new titles during the first half of February, which includes Atomic Heart as a day-one title. In it, you’re transported to a steampunk-ish utopian world where man and robot once used to live in harmony. A technological error caused the metallic beings to gain a mind of their own and wage war against humans. Armed with a power glove and cutting-edge weaponry, players are pitted into explosive encounters in search of the greater truth. Atomic Heart releases February 20 on PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X. Just in time for the Super Bowl LVII event, Xbox is also bringing Madden NFL 23 to Game Pass. It will be available for free as part of the EA Play subscription, which is included in the Game Pass Ultimate subscription.

Atomic Heart isn’t the only gory addition to Xbox Game Pass this month, as Shadow Warrior 3: Definitive Edition slashes into Xbox Cloud Gaming, Xbox One, and PC, on February 16. This off-beat FPS deploys you onto a mythic Asian land, infested by demonic Yokai from Japanese folklore, in order to recapture an ancient dragon. Kitted with a katana and an arsenal of heavy firearms, you are set free onto the lands to slay enemies in a Doom-like, high-octane fashion. A bit before that, set forth on an epic, medieval adventure in Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord, as you build a party of soldiers, complete quests, raid camps, and command and engage in all-out battles against enemy troops. It will be available February 14, on cloud, console, and PC.

Cities: Skylines is coming to current-gen consoles by way of a ‘Remastered’ tag, which essentially takes advantage of their horsepower to show more tiles on screen — on par with the standard PC version. Arriving February 15 on cloud and the Xbox Series S/X, this city-building simulator puts you in the shoes of a mayor, as you design structures and streets, in addition to balancing basic public requirements such as education, law enforcement, healthcare, and more. It also features a day and night cycle, where once the sun goes down, traffic gets realistically slower. For the mecha heads out there, this month, Xbox is bringing SD Gundam Battle Alliance later tonight. In it, you acquire mobile suits and relive the greatest moments from Gundam history, which are getting tarnished by a mysterious phenomenon.

Beyond that, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers gain early access trial to EA’s response to the Monster Hunter franchise, Wild Hearts. Gates to the fantasy landscape of Azuma will open three days earlier on February 13, offering limited access to the game. Apex Legends Season 16 Brings Team Deathmatch, to Be First Season Without New Hero

Apex Legends season 16 is right around the corner, and ahead of that, Respawn Entertainment has revealed some new changes to the game. For the first time ever, the new season will not introduce a new hero/ character to the game. Instead, the studio is adding the much-requested Team Deathmatch mode, which pits six players against each other in high-stakes combat. The new season, titled ‘Revelry,’ will also rework classes for its Legends, whilst adding a new energy class weapon called Nemesis. Apex Legends season 16 kicks off February 14 across all major platforms.

Team Deathmatch, much like precious limited-time modes in Apex Legends, will be accessible for the first three weeks of the new season. As per Kotaku, the new game mode will be similar to deathmatches in other games — devoid of downtime, with quick respawns as the players rack up kills for their team. With six players on either side, the first team to get 30 kills wins the round. It’s a best-of-three scenario, where winning two rounds perches your team to victory. At the start of the match, players will get to pick a loadout comprising a slew of weapons, alongside a grenade. That said, if your team is at a disadvantage, you can switch between heroes as you wish — akin to Overwatch — and use their skillset to your advantage.

That said, Respawn Entertainment is removing the Arenas game mode from Apex Legends. “At its core, Apex Legends is a Battle Royale and the team wants to help players master the core game mode, and in its current state Arenas is not meeting our goals,” the blog post reads. The idea behind incorporating non-battle royale modes in Apex Legends is to get new players to be familiar with the game’s core loop, which involves cycling between weapons, characters, and skills, whose knowledge can then be transferred to the main game. Otherwise, you’d see most new players getting absolutely rolled by experienced ones, within minutes of landing on the map.

Respawn is also bringing a rotating mode playlist for limited-time events. Dubbed ‘Mixtape,’ the new feature is slated to arrive in early March and will allow players to select from a rotation of TDM, Gun Run, and Control modes — intense situations with low downtime. Additionally, there’s a new weapon — Nemesis — coming in, but the studio hasn’t revealed much besides confirming it is energy-based.

As stated before, in season 16, the developer is breaking with tradition and won’t release a new hero. Instead, the team is reworking their Class system by assigning each Legend to one of them. For now, there are five classes: Assault, Recon, Controller, Skirmisher, and Support. “Each class will now have some kind of meaningful, unique perk—whether that be the way a Legend can interact with new loot bins or new ways to revive teammates,” the blog reads. Previously, all 23 characters from the roster were classified as Offensive, Defensive, Recon, and Support. Further information on the same will be revealed in time, according to Respawn.

Apex Legends season 16 — Revelry — kicks off February 14 across PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X. Earlier this month, the studio announced that it is shutting down the mobile version.
