iOS 18 to Arrive With Sweeping Visual Overhaul Inspired by visionOS: Report

iOS 18 could arrive later this year with a massive visual overhaul to the user interface (UI), according to a report. The next major operating system update for iPhone and iPad is expected to arrive in the second half of 2024 along with new AI features that are baked into the system and the company’s Siri voice assistant — a recent report suggested that iOS 18 could be the Cupertino company’s biggest update to the mobile OS in several years.

A report in The Verifier (in Hebrew) citing anonymous sources claims that Apple will redesign parts of iOS to look like visionOS — the company’s operating system for the recently launched Apple Vision Pro. Featuring several translucent UI elements along with a blur effect, visionOS runs on Apple’s first ‘spatial computer’ and lets users view content in both augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) modes.

Apple is planning on refreshing parts of the operating system such as the built-in apps like Safari, as well as system menus and popups with a new design, inspired by visionOS, as per the report, that claims the first indicator of the upcoming changes was added to the Apple TV+ app with the tvOS 17.2 update.

The iPhone maker updated its eponymous content streaming app for Apple TV to tvOS 17.2 in December 2023. The update brought a new translucent sidebar menu that features design elements that are similar to visionOS. The report claims that the company will roll out the same menu design to iPadOS later this year.

While the publication does not have a good record in terms of leaking accurate information related to upcoming Apple products or software, this is not the first time that Apple is said to be working on a major update to iOS. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has also claimed that iOS 18 will be the company’s biggest update to its mobile OS in several years. The company is reportedly working on several AI features that will be baked into the upcoming operating system.

Apple is yet to make any announcements related to its upcoming software updates, and given the company’s secrecy around its products and software, we can expect to find out that iOS 18 will look like in June at WWDC 2024. That’s when the company typically shows off its upcoming software updates for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and Apple Watch, along with its Xcode development environment.

iOS 17.4 Public Beta Removes Support for Progressive Web Apps on iPhone in Europe: Report

Apple rolled out the iOS 17.4 public beta to beta testers globally last month, and the update was particularly significant for European users. It brought support for third-party app stores on the iPhone in the region, while allowing third-party browsers like Firefox and Google to use their own engines instead of Apple’s WebKit. However, some testers have now pointed out that the update has removed the support for progressive web apps (PWA) on their devices. A developer has claimed that this could be an intentional move to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

Developer Maximiliano Firtman posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) highlighting the issue. He first posted about the removal of PWAs on his iPhone on February 2 after the first public beta of iOS 17.4 was released. At the time he called it a bug, but after the release of iOS 17.4 beta 2 earlier this week, Maximiliano now claims that web apps might have been intentionally removed in Europe as a system alert is notifying users that web apps “will open from your default browser from now on”.

The tipster said that the possible reason for this move could be the European Union’s DMA. Apple added support for PWAs through WebKit, its browser engine for Safari. The company also made it a requirement for third-party browsers to use the same engine for their apps. However, with the DMA regulations that go into effect next month, the iPhone maker is now allowing browsers such as Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox to run their browser engine, which will not support PWAs. The conflicting part behind this argument is that Safari should still be able to support these web apps.

If it is true, this means that users in Europe will no longer get the web push notifications from a PWA, a feature which was added with the iOS 16.4 update. Further, this would also result in users losing the data stored in these web apps. However, it is worth noting that the tipster highlighted that “nothing is mentioned on release notes about this change”. Additionally, another user has also reported that they are unaffected by the issue.

Apple also rolled out the iOS 17.3.1 update to all users on Thursday, ahead of the expected release of iOS 17.4 in March. It is a small update that focuses on bug fixes and addresses only one issue. As per the changelog, some users reported an issue where while typing, the text unexpectedly duplicated itself or overlapped in the text field. Users who faced the issue should find that it has been resolved, after updating to the latest version.

Apple Music, Apple TV and Apple Devices Apps Launched on Windows to Replace iTunes on PC

Apple Music, Apple TV, and Apple Devices have officially been launched on Windows. These standalone apps were first previewed by the company in January 2023. After remaining in the testing phase for a year, the Cupertino-based tech giant has now removed the Preview tags from these apps and is letting users download them for their PCs. This move was reportedly made to reduce the reliance of users on iTunes, which previously acted as a one-stop shop for the combined functionalities of these apps, bar the streaming services.

A Support page of Apple now highlights that users with Windows 10 or later can now access these dedicated apps. Apple Music allows users to listen to and manage their iTunes library, access iTunes purchases, and get access to Apple’s streaming service. Similarly, Apple TV enables people to watch movies, documentaries, and TV series from their iTunes library, as well as offers the Apple TV+ streaming service. Apple Devices, on the other hand, helps update, back up, restore, and manage their iPhone and iPad devices, as well as let them sync content from PC.

The Apple apps for Windows support x86-based PCs running on Windows 10 or Windows 11. However, if users do not have the required operating system, they can continue to use iTunes. Further, those downloading the dedicated apps must download all three of them, as downloading just one or two will prompt a message to download the remaining apps first. Once all the apps have been downloaded, iTunes will only offer access to audiobooks and podcasts. The iPhone maker has also urged users to not delete their iTunes app as both Apple Music and Apple TV apps read the content of the iTunes library.

As per reports, Apple decided to split iTunes to mirror how the apps work on Mac. The dedicated apps also offer a more streamlined interface and recently added features that might be missing in the older app. Further, this also allows the tech giant to expand its streaming services to Windows users.

Separately, Apple researchers recently released an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered image editing tool called MGIE (MLLM Guided Image Editing), which is capable of editing images using simple text prompts. As per the preprint paper, it is capable of making Photoshop-style edits, global optimisation, and local edits.

iPhone SE 4 Tipped to Feature Dynamic Island, Might Offer iPhone 16-Like Design

iPhone SE 4 has been in the rumour mill for quite some time now. The affordable iPhone model has been delayed several times and is now speculated to be released sometime in 2025. Early leaks said that the device would borrow the design language of the iPhone 14 but a new rumour suggests Apple will ditch the notch on the upcoming iPhone SE’s display entirely in favour of the Dynamic Island. The Dynamic Island, which can display important notifications, debuted on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Apple last year expanded the feature to all iPhone 15 models.

Tipster Majin Bu (@MajinBuOfficial) on X claimed that the iPhone SE 4 “could have a design very similar to that of the current iPhone 16 still in development.” The upcoming handset is likely to feature a single camera instead of the double one of the iPhone 16 models. The fourth-generation model of the iPhone SE is tipped to get Dynamic Island on the display, which will house the Face ID and selfie camera. The tipster has also included a sketch to add credibility to the rumour. The handset was initially speculated to come with an iPhone 14-like design.

Further, the tipster states that the iPhone SE 4 will have dimensions similar to the iPhone XR. However, the tipster suggests considering the rumours with a pinch of salt “since it is still early to talk and have certainties about it.”

Apple introduced the Dynamic Island functionality with iPhone 14 Pro models in 2022. The pill-shaped cutout at the top of the screen offers quick access to Apple Pay transactions, low battery warnings, AirDrop transfers, Apple Maps directions, incoming phone calls, music tracks, SharePlay sessions, screen recordings and more. In 2023, Apple retained the feature on the iPhone 15 Pro, and ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ Max, while also extending it to the ‌iPhone 15‌ and iPhone 15‌ Plus

As per past reports, the iPhone SE 4 will sport a 6.1-inch OLED panel. It is expected to come with Apple’s in-house 5G modem chip. It is expected to pack a USB Type-C port for charging.

The iPhone SE 4 is believed to see light in 2025 at the earliest. The latest iPhone SE (2022) was launched in March 2022 with a starting price tag of Rs. 43,900 for the base 64GB storage model.

iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro Max Tipped to Pack Bigger Batteries Than Their Predecessors

iPhone 16 series, which is expected to include four models —iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, Phone 16 Pro, and Phone 16 Pro Max— could be unveiled sometime in the second half of this year. Unsurprisingly, loads of leaks and rumours have already started circulating online and we now get the first hints about the battery capacity of the upcoming iPhone 16 series. The batteries of the iPhone 16 Pro series could be large compared to the iPhone 15 series. The vanilla iPhone 16 is said to sport a 3,561mAh cell, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max is tipped to come with a 4,676mAh battery.

Tipster Majin Bu (@MajinBuOfficial) has posted the battery specifications of the iPhone 16 series on X. The iPhone 16‌ Pro models are said to be equipped with larger batteries than their predecessors. The ‌iPhone 16‌ Plus, in contrast, might see a downgrade in battery capacity compared to last year’s model, according to details that have surfaced online.

As per the leak, the iPhone 16 will carry a 3,561mAh battery and the iPhone 16 Plus could pack a 4,006mAh battery. The iPhone 16 Pro Max is tipped to feature a 4,676mAh battery. The battery details of the iPhone 16 Pro are not available at this moment. The top-end iPhone 16 Pro Max is said to see an internal redesign in the battery setup, using a rectangular shape instead of an L-shaped one.

Apple typically keeps its iPhone battery capacities under wraps, but the tipster claims that the iPhone 15 has a 3,349mAh battery unit and the iPhone 15 Plus has a 4,383mAh battery. The iPhone 15 Pro Max is said to be backed by a 4,422mAh battery. These are mostly in line with battery capacities revealed from previous teardown videos of the handsets.

The iPhone 15 series arrived with rechargeable lithium‑ion battery units. The battery of non-Pro models is claimed to offer up to 26 hours of video playback time on a single charge, while the battery unit of Pro models is said to deliver a maximum 29 hours of video playback time on a single charge. The regular iPhone 15 models are powered by the A16 Bionic chip that was unveiled in 2022. Meanwhile, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max run on Apple’s next-generation A17 Pro chip.

The price of the iPhone 15 in India starts at Rs. 79,900, while the iPhone 15 Plus starts at Rs. 89,900. The iPhone 15 Pro, on the other hand, is priced at Rs. 1,39,900 for the base 128GB storage model, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max starts at Rs. 1,59,900 for the base 256GB of storage variant.

Apple Watch Ultra With microLED Display Delayed Beyond 2026 Due to Supply Constraints: Report

Apple‘s long-rumoured transition to microLED display technology for its Apple Watch series may not happen anytime soon. A new report by a Korean publication suggests that the Apple Watch Ultra with microLED display will arrive in 2027 at the earliest. Previous reports pointed to a 2025 release. Supply chain issues are reportedly causing the delay. The Cupertino-based company launched the new Apple Watch Ultra 2 alongside the iPhone 15 lineup in September last year.

As per a report by The Elec, an Apple Watch with a microLED display has been delayed beyond 2026. The report, citing analysts, states that even a 2027 release date is uncertain. Apple has not yet been reportedly able to finalise the component supply chain to make microLED displays for the Apple Watch. This contradicts past reports pointing to a 2025 release. Trend Force, last year, opined that the launch of the next Apple Watch Ultra has been pushed to 2026, while DSCC’s Ross Young previously stated that 2025 could be the year of microLED on the Apple Watch.

High microLED manufacturing costs could be the main cause of supply issues. As per the report, the cost of producing a 2-inch microLED display is $150 (roughly Rs. 12,000), almost four times compared to $38 (roughly Rs. 3,000) for the OLED panel. Incorporating the microLED technology in the wearable priced at $799 could be a challenge for Apple as it impacts the company’s revenue from the product.

Currently, Apple uses OLED displays for its wearables. The microLED display technology offers improved resolution, lifespan, colour contrast, and the ability to be better seen at an angle compared to traditional panels. The company is widely speculated to replace the current OLED standard with microLED technology in its iPhone, iPad, and Mac units from 2024 onwards.

Apple unveiled the new Apple Watch Ultra 2 alongside the iPhone 15 lineup and Watch Series 9 last year. It is currently available in India for Rs. 89,900 in Alpine Loop, Trail Loop, and Ocean band options.

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 features a 49mm case with a Retina display that offers up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness. It runs on watchOS 10 and has Apple’s custom S9 SiP under the hood. The watch supports a diving depth of 40 meters.

Samsung Uses Lower-Grade Titanium on Galaxy S24 Ultra; Reveals Teardown Video

Samsung has used titanium on the flagship Galaxy S24 Ultra‘s frame this year instead of Aluminium. The South Korean brand’s biggest rival Apple also provided titanium on its latest iPhone 15 Pro series. Most recently, YouTuber Zack Nelson from JerryRigEverything channel, took the Galaxy S24 Ultra apart to find out the amount of titanium that Samsung has used on the phone. The teardown video revealed that Samsung used lower-grade titanium for the frame on the Galaxy S24 Ultra, while Apple treated the iPhone 15 Pro with higher-grade titanium.

Zack Nelson in his latest episode of JerryRigEverything strips the Galaxy S24 Ultra to find out the exact amount of Titanium being used to make the phone. The 11-minute video starts with removing the back panel. The handset features flat glass panels on the front and the back and the YouTuber was able to get inside the device quickly with a single slice from the knife around the exterior. The interior shows 17 Phillips head screws and beneath the screws, Samsung has arranged the 15W wireless charger with copper wires. The teardown offers a look at the arrangement of interior components. The haptic motor is placed inside the bottom speaker chamber and the handset seems to have a bigger copperish vapour chamber under the cell.

As the video progresses, Nelson states that Samsung has laid out a thin cosmetic border of titanium around the exterior. He then melts down the frame of the phone and an XRF scan indicates that Samsung packed grade 2 Titanium on the phone. Apple, in contrast, uses grade 5 Titanium on its latest iPhone 15 models. He claims that a purple anodised aluminium frame fills up the majority of the inner space.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra’s metal was put through a 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit furnace to separate the materials. The plastic elements quickly burned out while the edges and corner pieces remained. After melting the plastic and Aluminum, the YouTuber notes that Samsung performed an over-moulding process to form parts around one another with Aluminium, plastic and Titanium materials. Apple, on the other hand, developed a custom solid-state diffusion process that fuses Aluminium directly with Titanium. Both phones have about the same thickness of Titanium around the outside, but Apple’s grade 5 Titanium is about four times more expensive.

Nelson opines that Apple could be using $10-15 (roughly Rs. 800 to Rs. 1,200) worth of the material in every iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Samsung, on the other hand, could be using $3-5 (roughly Rs. 250 to Rs. 400) worth of Titanium in the Galaxy S24 Ultra. The added cost is of shaping and casting the metal to work with titanium. The YouTuber states that both titanium exteriors are more cosmetic than anything else. Apple might be getting some minor strength improvements with solid-state diffusion, but with a plastic intermediary, Samsung is not getting any additional strength.

Apple’s Vision Pro Headset to Get First Metaverse App with ‘Ultra Realistic Graphics’

By the second quarter of this year, Apple’s Vision Pro headset is likely to get its first metaverse app. Victoria VR, a firm that works on projects related to web3 and virtual reality is developing this app for the Vision Pro. As per the initial announcement disclosed over the weekend, the app will feature ultra realistic graphics to make the headset experience as immersive as technologically possible. With this, Victoria VR is looking to connect with the members of the global high-end gaming sector at a time when the global games market is poised to reach the valuation of $256.9 billion (roughly Rs. 21,33,268 crore) by 2025.

Apple released its futuristic, mixed reality (XR) Vision Pro headset on February 2, 2024 – several months after announcing it at its Worldwide Developers Conference on June 5, 2023. The headset is outlandishly priced at $3,499 (roughly Rs. 2.9 lakh).

Deploying its app on the Vision Pro, Victoria VR is looking to integrate Apple’s inhouse technology with its own and offer life-like play experience to gamers.

“There will be new opportunities every day encouraging users to return and engage with the world. We will host competitions and give daily/weekly/monthly rewards for users and working with the top tier of the gaming industry, we will be creating a series of Quests and mini-games drawing on the rich experience gained from our predecessors,” Victoria VR said in its whitepaper released earliler this week.

It is interesting, that despite Apple’s reluctance to let its users engage with volatile virtual digital assets like cryptocurrencies, Victoria VR’s app will expose Vision users to crypto and NFT activities.

“Our primary focus will be targeting users of cryptocurrencies and speculators as early adopters. We will become one of the main global marketplaces for NFTs. Within Victoria VR, users will be able to create NFT’s and securely trade in and outworld NFTs in the The Big Market VR,” the whitepaper further noted.

Apple, as of now, has not addressed the crypto-related elements of VR games on the Vision Pro. The iPhone-maker has previously come under fire from members of the Web3 industry for obstructing app growths on its App Store.

In April 2023, a California appeals court had also called Apple’s policy of not allowing app developers to integrate third party payment methods with their services as ‘unlawful’. The court ruling is expected to bring changes to Apple’s App Store payment practices in the EU and could also allow Web3 apps to add more operability to their iOS iterations.
